Happy Holidays!

Goddard-Williams family

Happy holidays! What are your plans for this week? I wanted to thank you so much for checking in over the past year. I’m so grateful for this exuberant community of smart, funny, wonderful women, and feel lucky every day to be part of it. We’ll be visiting relatives in California over the next week — and posting photos on Instagram, if you’d like to see — but in the meantime here’s a look back over the past year on Cup of Jo…

Yen Ha

Fashion posts, like our week of outfits series, including a criminal defense attorney, antiques dealer, nutritionist, architect, law executive, stylist and our beloved Stella. Plus, the best shoes and pants to wear to work, seven everyday clothes I swear by and the prettiest signet rings.

Trader Joe's breakfast

Food posts, like the dessert Franny brings to every party, my sister’s killer salad recommendation and an instant pasta upgrade. Plus, four Trader Joe’s hacks, an ode to potlucks, a tribute to Anthony Bourdain, the best jarred pasta sauce (for real!) and the case for intuitive eating. Oh, and Alex grouching about sharing food at restaurants, lol.

Samin Nosrat

Beauty posts, including a fishtail braid tutorial, the one product Caroline always finishes and four women on going gray. Also, our beauty uniform series, featuring the Hot Young Widows Club founder Nora McInerny, charming cooking show host Samin Nosrat, wise reverend Lydia Sohn and funny fashion writer Connie Wang.

Natalie Portman hotel

Travel posts, like our trips to England and Maine. Also, three things to always pack, what NOT to do on a plane, a genius way to entertain kids on flights and the (weirdest) best part of trips.

John Derian house

Design posts, including house tours in Copenhagen, Ohio, upstate New York, Mexico City, Cape Cod and of course, Brooklyn, and small spaces like this 600-square-foot family home (with a Murphy bed!) and Stella’s 175-square-foot studio. Plus, how to hang family photos, how to arrange grocery store flowers and tons of fun things.

Abbey Lossing podcasts

Culture posts, including the 6 best fall books, the mistake R.O. Kwon made at Crazy Rich Asians, beautiful life advice from a woman with stage IV cancer, what has inspired you lately and 15 reader comments on books. We also discussed serious topics, like sexual harassment, mental health and family separation.

Lisa Inge wedding

Relationship posts, like funny marriage pet peeves, wedding dos and don’ts, 17 reader comments on grief, trying out the diva cup, finding a role model and nine women talking about divorce. Plus, career thoughts, like coming out at work, money advice with Paco deLeon and what NOT to say during a job interview.

Insecure HBO

Friendship posts, including the love story Caroline never thought to tell, the power of thank-you notes, finding a hobby, a beautiful small kindness (sob!) and a how to make friends with a cookbook club.

Best of Parenting 2018

Parenting posts, like three words that changed how I parent, having an only child, a foolproof $1 birthday present, 12 beloved children’s books, funny conversations with kids, what contractions really feel like, why moms should be in the photos, class differences with your parents and the one thing I’d tell Meghan Markle about pregnancy. Plus, our motherhood around the world series, including Wales and South Africa. (These comments also made us laugh out loud.)

Thank you again for everything this year. Hope you have a wonderful, relaxing break. We’ll be back on January 2nd with a gorgeous week of outfits, a post about solo sex, and…thoughts on turning 40 :) Have a great holiday and a happy new year. Lots of love. xoxoxo

P.S. And in case you need them: 10 tips for traveling with a baby, 10 ways to entertain a toddler on a flight, and 16 ways to travel with kids (and actually enjoy it).

  1. Jill says...

I’d love to see a post on what serums your team uses!

  2. Lali says...

I just saw you were looking for chapter books to read with Toby.
I vote for Quinny and Hopper. It stars two wonderful 9 year-olds.

  3. sadie says...

Very long time reader, sometimes commenter. :) Thank you for creating this amazing space…where I read one thing that leads to another and another and 8 or 9 posts later my coffee cup is empty! I look forward to what 2019 has to bring to Cup of Jo. Have a wonderful break and see you next year! <3

  4. Natalie says...

    Joanna,

I’ve been reading your blog since I graduated from college 7.5 years ago after being introduced by an old roommate (thanks, Emily!) and it has been a constant in my life since. Through relationships, moves, and career changes, your blog and this community of women has helped to shape the person I have become. When your sister Lucy came to my medical school to read from “When Breath Becomes Air,” I shared with her that her story gave me an extra nudge to apply. As a Classics major in college, when I read your post about Lucy’s falling in love with Paul’s books, it showed me that people who love the humanities can be doctors, too. So while I love your style posts (have been wearing navy nail polish on and off for years thanks to you and still do an updo from your hair tutorials for weddings), the personal posts have had quite the impact as well. Happy Holidays and Happy New Year to you and your sweet family!

  5. Happy holidays! Wishing you and your family a wonderful season!

  6. Mary says...

Another year has gone by, and I am proud to say that I have been a CoJ follower for six years now. I have loved your motherhood series even before I became one, and now that I am a mom of two (all under three!), I loved it even more!

Thank you, CoJ team for making my mornings great!

  7. SEVDI says...

With the zillion blogs out there, it’s possible to find a separate blog that speaks to each of the many facets of a woman. However, it’s rare that you find a single blog that touches the many roles we have to take on whether we plan to or not. There is heartfelt content both in your blog and in your comments section for women of all shapes and sizes in all senses of the word. It’s so reassuring to find a corner of the internet where you’re welcome no matter what life has thrown at you. Come to think of it, CoJ is like the Cheers of the blogosphere. Thank you and happy holidays!

  8. Rachel says...

    Joanna and team,
Thank you so much for sharing all of your reliably thought-provoking and uplifting content. Checking in to see the latest post is one of the highlights of my day. It has been a joy to watch Joanna’s family and business evolve over the years.

    Love,
    Rachel

  9. Matt says...

I also never comment on here but i’ve been following CoJ for years too. The house tours are always especially inspiring I find. I’m actually a 30 year old male, just incase you were interested to know the diversity of your followers :)

  10. Joanna and Cup of Jo team, sending you lots of love and the warmest holiday wishes. Thank you, thank you, thank you for who you are, the community you have created, the care you take, the hard posts, the respect you have for your readers, and the million little and big things you do that we are entirely unaware of. You are, by far, the best place on the internet and have helped me in a myriad of ways (dealing with breakups, deaths, dating, moving to NYC, getting in action politically, etc).

Joanna, it was an ABSOLUTE pleasure to meet you this summer at Books Are Magic! The highlight of my year. (I’m the Naseem from the Dating Advice from your Therapist post — still going very strong with Michael <3, and six months a New Yorker now. You made me feel so at home and like an old friend you just bumped into, which, as someone who had just moved, made me feel grounded).

Hope everyone has a wonderful break and can't wait to read new posts in the New Year!

  11. Sarah Chait says...

2018 was the year I started reading CoJ more religiously, and it’s quickly become my go-to blog for getting lost in content and comments. I’m floored at the sheer volume of content that speaks directly to me, and the sheer amount I learn from the content that doesn’t. The fact that I sometimes get more from the comments section than the post itself is just incredible – what a group of intelligent, articulate women there are in this space!

As a single woman in her 30s, it’s rare to find high-quality writing about what it really feels like to be in my shoes, and how amazing to find that community here on this blog that mainly speaks to married mothers. I’ll be reading CoJ for as long as you write it. Thank you!

    • Lesley says...

      +1

  12. Cynthia says...

Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! And safe travels!

  13. maywyn says...

    Happy Holidays!
    Thank y’all at CupofJo!

  14. Flora says...

I’m a longtime follower (before Toby was born!), and just wanted to say I really enjoyed Paco’s columns this year. I hope they still pop up every now and then!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

Thank you! And they definitely will! We have a good one coming up:) I’ll pass your kind words onto her. Xoxo

  15. Heather says...

I never comment, but I just wanted to let the COJ team know how much I love and appreciate this blog! I check it multiple times a day anticipating the next post. Your posts over the last year (and always) have been so thoughtful, beautiful, and fun. The comments section has also meant so much to me and truly shows the community you have built her and for that I’m so grateful! Thank you! Happy Holidays and enjoy your time off!

  16. Carrie says...

A reader of 5 years here. I am so grateful for Cup of Jo and the community of women it attracts. I come here for the comments just as much as I do the actual blog posts. Merry Christmas to all :)

  17. Kaitlin says...

I have been reading your blog for a decade now- before you were married to Alex- and I have grown to love this online space more and more each year.

I love that this is a place of support and learning, I have gleaned so many fabulous tips from this blog, that have helped me to step into the best version of myself.

I feel like you are all friends from afar, and to be able to curate an incredible place like this, on the internet no less, is an absolute miracle.

I cherish the time that I spend reading and engaging with this blog <3

Happy Holidays to all- wishing you relaxation, joy, and peace!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

Oh my gosh I’m tearing up! Thank you so much, Kaitlin. That means so so much.

  18. Jenny says...

Going through a very hard time right now, while struggling with mental illness, Cup of Jo is one of my reasons to feel live is worth living and makes me so damn happy and inspired ALWAYS!

THANK YOU Joanna, Caroline, Stella, Franny, Christine etc. please always continue speading love and positivity and cultural, relationship and life insights on here.

    Happy Holidays to you too!

    • Jannelle says...

Jenny, I can’t even imagine what you are dealing with, but know there are people out here who love you and will be here for you! You are a beautiful, soul and worthy of so much that life has to offer.

    • Taylor says...

Thinking of you as you’re going through this tough time! Keep fighting! Wishing you happy holidays and better times around the corner!

  19. Sally says...

Thanks for all the wonderful content this year!

I have learnt so much from the posts here, and I feel like I’m a better version of me because of this site.

    Have a wonderful break!

  20. Martina says...

Happy holidays from Germany, CoJ team and readers! Thanks for all your wonderful posts and comments. During this past year, I laughed and cried with you, learned a lot and found inspiration in a lot of different ways. You all create a wonderful place here!

  21. Cynthia says...

How is this post dated 12/19??? I watched all day 12/20 for a post and there was no post, then this pops up dated 24 hours previously. Is there a posting delay?

    • Joanna Goddard says...

Good eye, Cynthia! It was pushed live on 12/20, but we hadn’t updated the time on WordPress so it still had the old editing time on it. Just changed the date to 12/20! You’re not going crazy haha xoxo

  22. Jo says...

I’ve been reading a Cup of Jo since before you married Alex and it’s still my go to blog, very insightful, thought provoking and full of fun, keep up the great work and here’s to 2019 🥂

  23. Sarah Ann says...

Recently we played a game and everyone had to guess who I would choose to have brunch with. 4/5 picked cup of jo— clearly my love of your site is well known. Happy Christmas!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

Oh my gosh that is so touching!! Thank you for telling me, I feel so honored :)

  24. Maria says...

Happy Holidays Joanna! I hope you can do a city tour in 2019! Fingers crossed!

  25. Jessica says...

I’ve been reading COJ since Joanna’s honeymoon, and back then I was only 16(!) Now that I’m officially in my mid twenties, I can definitely say that reading COJ practically everyday for the past 9 years has been instrumental in helping me navigate life and all that comes with it- from dating to dealing with deaths, job interviews to solo travelling, and so much more.

Thank you so much to the COJ team for your insightful, funny and thoughtful content. xx

  26. Laura says...

Thanks for all the great osts. I just turned 49 dec 8 and still can’t believe it! Luckily my husband and I share the same day and year and month so in it together 😍

  27. Claire says...

I’ve been reading for over a decade now (!!), and wanted to say thanks for being there :)

  28. Dawn says...

Happy holidays Cup of Jo fam! Thank you for another year of thoughtful, informative, and inspirational content. The comment section was particularly lovely this year—I learned so much from the kind, wise women here. The poetry post and accompanying comments were by far the best thing I read on the internet this year. Xoxo.

  29. Ingrid says...

Safe travels and happy holidays! Thanks for your great posts and for bringing together all your great readers. It’s the only blog that I know of that has such kind, thoughtful, and interesting comments.

  30. Cailin says...

Happy holidays COJ community! This has been a really difficult year and there have been many mornings when, for one reason or another, I’ve sat and read these posts through tears. It’s been a year of anxiety, not knowing when the next shoe will drop, of feeling upended and unraveled and uncertain. You cannot know how much the reliability of this community has meant.

I wish I could have you all over for Christmas cookies and a bottle of wine. XO

    • Alexandra says...

Consider yourself hugged, Cailin. I truly hope that the next year will be a better one for you.

    • Sarah says...

Oh I hope it gets better! I’ve had that year – it sucks. (It does get better, promise, but sometimes it’s just better to know that you’re right, it sucks.). I don’t know you, but I’m toasting you in support from afar.

    • Lindsay says...

Oh, Cailin, big hugs to you. I read this once and think of it often: the reason we all feel so heavy is that we carry each other in our hearts. This HAS been quite a year. I hope 2019 brings everyone strength and peace. CoJ community, I’m grateful for you, too.

    • Cailin says...

      Alexandra, Sarah, Lindsay…thank you, truly.

What an amazing group of women to share this space with. <3

  31. Caitlin says...

Awesome timing on the Trader Joe’s breakfast hack! I am hosting a breakfast soon with gluten-free, vegetarian and lactose intolerant folks. I can totally tweak this recipe to make it work for everyone!

  32. Lorraine says...

Happy holidays and new year to the CoJ crew! I look forward to your posts and community everyday. Thanks for being a friend to all of us! It was great to meet you guys this year as well at the Moma design event.

Much love to you and yours. xoxo

  33. Charlotte K says...

I love these year end posts because I see posts I loved the first time and find posts that for whatever reason didn’t register with me the first time, or I missed while traveling. Such fun. I hadn’t seen the Samin post and I haven’t seen her series yet and now of course I have to watch it right away!!

  34. Edwina says...

Thank you Joanna and the lovely COJ team- I will miss you a lot. Your posts (and the amazing comments that come with them) bring such joy, style, wisdom, companionship, inspiration, solidarity, hope and laughter into our lives. I’ve been reading your blog for many years now and it’s my all time favourite thing on the internet. Hope you have a fantastic break x

    • Jen says...

Well said, Edwina! Seconding your sentiment, but spelling it as “my all time favorite”, since I am just from Seattle.

      Thanks CoJ team!

  35. Gabrielle says...

I can recognize and admit that I’m being a comment section creep, but I thought there would be details in this post about Stella’s departure based on your comment to someone earlier this week? I’d love to hear more about her next journey!

Another great year for my favorite corner on the internet. Cheers to you, CoJ team! xo

  36. Kaylie says...

I’m 23, and due to some unfortunate deaths in the past few years, am struggling with the loss of older female mentorship in my life. The CoJ community makes me feel like I have hundreds of people to consult re: all the big and little things in life. Thank you all so much for your guidance. :)

    • Emily says...

We’re here for you, Kaylie! I lost my Grandmother earlier this year so I know how you feel. Sending so much love and juju your way

  37. Jane says...

COJ brings so much joy to my weekdays! I love the writing, the humor, the thoughtfulness, and the community. I appreciate that there is space here for everything – outrage, grief, happiness, humor, and beauty.

My husband and I are starting the parenting journey in 2019, and this site has helped me feel excited and ready-ish (still very nervous haha) to embrace the joys and challenges. And equally as important, it has reminded me to elevate and celebrate my siblings, my best girlfriends, and my community.

Happy holidays to the whole team!

  38. Enjoy your time in California! I’ve loved this blog for so long and look forward to yet another year of laughter, comfort and wise words❤️

  39. Shannon says...

I miss you already :) Happy Holidays & looking forward to a wonderful 2019!

  40. Alida says...

I love coming here for your refreshing, effervescent take on absolutely everything. Thank you all!

Editorial note – Autocorrect replaced “Widows” with “Windows” in your post. ❤️

    • Franny Eremin says...

Thank you for catching that! xo

  41. Cynthia says...

Happy Holidays to you, your family, and your entire team! Thank you for all the inspiration, fun, humor, and beauty you bring to the world!

  42. Ok, but WHAT is that bowl of deliciousness in the third picture? Which link is that, cause I need it five minutes ago. I’m also taking the week off, but instead of traveling I’ll be doing all the things I never otherwise have time to do… like making awesome recipes from the interwebs.

    • NN says...

LOL, I had the same question. Thank you Joanna for answering it otherwise I would have spent the rest of my day checking every post in your Food tab!
      Happy holidays!
Just want to say – I’m relatively new here, I discovered this blog accidentally when I was looking for party recipes and found a goldmine! I remember the excitement when I found an amazing blog with HUNDREDS of posts and THOUSANDS of comments to catch-up on. I’ve been an ardent follower since and am excited to say I’ve finally caught up and am up to date with the blog. Yippeee!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

NN, so happy to have you here!!! :) :) :)

    • katy says...

I thought the same thing then found it! Obvisouly the perfect food pic to use in this roundup post! Love to all COJ readers and the COJ team!

  43. Ro says...

I just wanted to say this is my favorite corner of the internet. I refresh my COJ tab multiple times a day, and am always excited to see new posts. And oh, the comment section! So many thoughtful people and funny stories.

I know how difficult it is to come up with new content, while taking everyone’s perspectives into consideration, and you guys do such a great job of that. From your beauty uniforms, to apartment tours, to parenting posts (which I love to read for some reason, even though I don’t have kids), you touch on a little bit of everything. And it’s all done in such a beautiful and fun way.

From a big fan to the entire COJ team, have a happy holiday!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

What a really lovely note, Ro. Thank you so much, it means a lot xoxo

  44. Trish says...

Wishing you and your family a wonderful holiday season! I am so grateful for Cup of Jo as an affirming space for women. Thank you for using this platform to speak out on hard and important issues, including immigrant and women’s rights.
