The One Beauty Product I Always Finish

Caroline Donofrio

If I had to go to Mars and could only pack one beauty product (yes, when faced with interplanetary travel I should have bigger things on my mind, but bear with me for a moment), this is what I would choose…

Enter Weleda Skin Food.

You know how the dad in My Big Fat Greek Wedding sprays Windex on every possible ailment, from psoriasis to a paper cut? (If the answer is no, you’ve just found yourself a new rainy day activity.) Well, this is my version of that.

Do your elbows feel like a rhinoceros? Skin Food. Want your limbs to look glossy in summer dresses? Guess who! Face feeling dry after a flight? You know the answer. There isn’t a raggedy cuticle or scaly patch that Skin Food doesn’t love.

But my secret trick — and the place where this stuff truly shines — is to use it on my face, as a luminizer. (An accidental discovery on par with the invention of potato chips.) I take a tiny dab and apply it along the upper ridge of my cheekbones. It doesn’t leave any shimmer or shine, just a very healthy glow like you’ve just jogged a mile or been kissed by a unicorn.

Whenever I do this, friends comment on my glowy-ness and ask what products I’m using. Just one thing, I tell them. One balm to rule them all.

Do you have a Windex cure-all, or a product you always finish? I’d love to hear!

P.S. If you’re on the hunt for beauty products, Dermstore is having a big Memorial Day sale.
P.P.S. One hair tool to rule them all and the thing I always stock for houseguests.

  1. Natalia says...

I have been DYING to try so many things, but specifically the Weleda Skin Food thanks to Caroline!

  2. Skin food is on sale at amazon for $6.30 for the bigger tube. I remembered this post and bought 2 at Target just now. (They price match.) I may actually order one more, since it usually sells for $19!

  3. Jacyra says...

Something I picked up while living in Australia, paw paw ointment. It’s amazing! From lips to cuts.

  4. Angela says...

“…like you just ran a mile or got kissed by a unicorn.” You’re the best, Caroline

  5. Skin Food is the best! It’s one of my hero products in the winter for dry hands. I’ll have to try it on my face.

  6. Chelsea Peterson says...

I love skin food! I’ve used it since I first got some at a little health food store I worked at in high school. I’m a chef and it works great for dry hands. I only recently started using it on my face, as a night cream and then I also mix it with a bit of powdered bronzer also has an illuminator. I’ve read its on many makeup artists favorite product lists.

  7. Michelle says...

Skin Food WAS my one product. Well sort of…
I went on a ten day silent meditation retreat and used this nightly on my hands and feet. It was my one “indulgence” in a place where there was no talking, no phone, no reading allowed. Our day consisted of sleep from 9:30 – 4am when the first meditation bell would ring, eat, and meditate. I used this on my hands and feet every night and it made me feel so comforted. By the end of the retreat when we were finally allowed to talk, my two bunk mates were like “What did you use every night that smelled like heaven!?”.

  8. Kara L Wade says...

co bigelow Rose Salve – lips, cuticles, dry skin patches and even a dot on my cheekbones for some glow/shine. I have also been know do dot EOS lip balm on my cheekbones.

  9. Priscilla says...

My mom’s Windex is Vaseline (or any brand 100% petroleum jelly). And because I’m turning into my mother, it’s now also my go-to product.

  10. Lindsay says...

Fun Fact: My house was used to film My Big Fat Greek Wedding.

I’ve lived in the Toronto house 20 years and it’s been in many movies but that filming process was hands down the most entertaining!

    • Cora says...

That is the coolest thing ever! I feel like this is a COJ post in the making!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

no way, lindsay! that is amazing!

  11. M says...

Question for you Caroline, as I have sensitive and blemish-prone skin, this doesn’t cause any breakouts when you use on your face?

    • Sarah says...

For myself, I don’t use anything with added frangrance (even essential oils) on my face. Skin Food sounds lovely but for me, I’d reserve it for hands and body since my face is prone to irritation too!

  12. Isabella says...

I love Weleda! I used their Sea Buckthorn oil as my special belly-rub while I was pregnant, and it was probably *the* highlight of my otherwise wretched pregnancy (well, aside from the first time I saw my baby boy, then the size and shape of a sour patch kid, jumping and jumping and JUMPING on the ultrasound screen).

  13. Karly Edwards says...

Yay! I thought Caroline moved? Left? I’m hallucinating? Either way glad to read her posts again!

    • Joanna says...

I am also confused by this – we did see a goodbye post I believe! I have been feeling like I’m losing it as well. Love to see her back! Would also love to see some acknowledgement so we can keep up with what’s up at the blog

    • Joanna Goddard says...

she’s covering for lexi during her maternity leave — we’ll be doing an update post very soon! xoxo

  14. Michelle says...

Cerave Healing Ointment! It’s my favorite lip balm (I carry a sample-sized container with me all day) and it’s great for dry skin, eczema, torn cuticles and everything else.

  15. Elizabeth says...

It’s my favorite thing, too! But I slather across my whole face, neck, and chest because it moisturizes like nothing else.

  16. Spruitt says...

I use skinfood for everything too! I use it in my whole body, but the magic happens when I use it on my face. I put it on after I wash my face at night and my skin the next day is luminous.

  17. Catherine says...

    SKIN FOOD! Yes!

  18. Brigitte says...

OMG. Thank you for this tip. Even though I have been a big Weleda fan for years, I had totally missed this product. When I read this yesterday I immediately rushed out to buy it, and what can I say, my cheeks are glowing and my feet never felt softer ;)
P.S.: a tip from me: Skin food costs only € 8 here in Europe. So fill your suitcase on your next trip!

  19. Anna says...

Any and every ailment of the body can and will be cured by tea tree oil! It is my windex, for sure!

  20. Laurel says...

I use coconut oil as a makeup remover and face wash every night. It’s gentle, hydrating and brightens my skin. I love it.

I also eat a spoonful of it every morning to regulate my appetite. It totally works and the only thing that helps me avoid being hangry!

  21. Literally going to go buy this now. Sold.

  22. Temme says...

I was a big BIG weleda fan. The sea buckthorn wash, the skin food, the white mallow cream are ones I fully recommend if you don’t have a problem with the following: I found a fly in my Weleda body wash once. Aghhh. I mean, I understand that accidents happen. It just makes it difficult for me to buy my beloved weleda again.

Anyone else ever found a bug in their beauty products?

    • mary says...

Finding a fly in a face cream is something that I would not mind.
All kinds of body parts of dead animals (bones, skins, etc) sometime are ingredients in conventional cosmetics or soaps. A single dead fly in a plant based cream doesn’t make me nervous ;-)

    • Temme says...

Good point, Mary. I think it was the surprise that made me squeamish. On the plus side, at least it wasn’t a rat. (shudder)

  23. Donna says...

I feel this way about Lanolips’ multibalm.

  24. I’ve become addicted to Under Aurora’s Coconut Oil Spray. It has a cult following because it can be used in all kinds of ways, but I prefer to keep it in the shower and rub it all over my body before toweling off. It’s such a simple thing – literally coating myself in it takes *maybe* 3 minutes – but I feel like some kind of self-care goddess every time. It smells so, so good and my skin feels ridiculously soft afterwards. In the winter I follow it up with lotion too, but now that it’s warmer I often skip the lotion and just spritz more generously :) I pretty much never finish beauty products, but I’m on my 2nd big bottle of this stuff, even though it lasts forever.

I found it because I lived in Columbus, where Under Aurora is based, but it sells online (in a variety of sizes) and in cool little shops all over the country (check out the ‘retailers’ page).

    • Danielle says...

This looks great. Also yay for cool Ohio companies. I really love Tart Peach lipsticks another Columbus company.

  25. Sigrid says...

Haha, I went straight away and bought this. I could´t miss the chance to look like I´ve been kissed by a unicorn.

  26. Samantha Bodamer says...

Totally went to Fairway on my lunch break to try this by putting a little on my cheeks and I look instantly glowy.

Their prices were pretty good, $12 for the big tube. Thanks for posting it, I am a big fan of french pharmacy products, but have learned recently that they aren’t so natural- this seems like a great alternative.

  27. Erin says...

I love Skinfood and have used it as a highlighter for years!
My other Weleda multitasker is their Everon Lip balm. I love the subtle rose vanilla scent and it has the perfect texture to use as a brow pomade, cuticle/nail balm, and (here’s my weirdest hack) eyelash enhancer. I put a little on my eyelashes and then curl them and it gives some separation and makes it almost look like I’m wearing mascara. It also helps them hold the curl better. It’s not greasy or oily and doesn’t migrate into my eyeballs or contact lenses.

    • A Martin says...

Oh I have this! I’m totally going to try this out. Thank you for the tip!

    • Mel F says...

Three cheers for Everon that stuff is Magic for lips!

  28. Jen says...

    Noxzema! I’ve used it forever.

    • Charlotte says...

Noxema <3 I haven’t used Noxema in years, but I remember it vividly! I loved the smell, the brilliant white color, the whipped consistency, and how good the tingling sensation felt, especially during summer

    • meg says...

      Noxzema! <3 <3 <3

Haven't thought of it in years!

    • Brenda says...

Noxzema is great! The best for sunburned skin as well

  29. Stefanie says...

I have 3-4 tubes of skin food in my house at all times. My daughters each have one, I have one next to my bed and one in my purse. It is magical!

  30. Laura says...

This product is 10$ less on amazon

    • Nicole Brant says...

Be careful about Amazon. If it is sold from a third party, there is a chance it could be fake.

  31. Mine is Cleansing Balm. Dry spot? Balm. Overnight mask? Balm. Luminizer? Balm. Makeup remover? Balm.

  32. Karen says...

    Kissed by a unicorn!

  33. Lesley says...

Shea Essentials raw shea butter- it’s the best! Makes me feel glow-y and fresh.

Tea tree oil works wonders for me in terms of healing/preventing blemishes.

  34. Maggie says...

YES! Couldn’t agree more re: Skin Food. Yes, definitely use it on your face if you have super dry skin (AKA all winter). I also use it in my hair and my hair has never looked better! A little dab in my palm, rub it in well, and then distribute through your hair (ears down only!). It works on wet, damp, even dry hair when I’m between washes and need a little shine. I’m telling you, it’s life-changing.

    • KL says...

Oh! I can’t wait to try this!!

  35. Heather says...

    I am ordering this now!

And side question – Caroline, hadn’t you left CoJ? Or am I thinking of someone else? Sorry if I am mixing you up!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

yes, she’s filling in for lexi during her maternity leave, we love having her back! xoxo

    • Fatima says...

How can you mix up Caroline?! She s the OG. Glad you re back ?

  36. Becca says...

Bag Balm! (https://www.bagbalm.com/shop) A similar situation – a cure-all balm. But it comes in a cool retro green tin, it was made for cows udders! It has antibacterial properties so I put it on all cuts and scrapes. It also soothes dry skin and cuticle and MAKES MY EYELASHES LUSHER (truth). In the winter I rub it on my whole face right before bed for extra moisture. I got my first tub from my husband’s grandma years ago and fell in love. Now my littlest one always asks for “bag bong” :-)

  37. Deb says...

I want to be kissed by a unicorn!!!! (So pleased to be hearing from Caroline again :-))

  38. I love this product too!!

And I’m ALWAYS running out of Glossier Boy Brow. It’s the perfect filler- looks natural, stays on all day!

  39. Jen says...

How timely! I just had a baby and also have a 2.5 year old, and I’m tired. So tired that this morning my toddler asked me, “mommy, what’s that river on your forehead?” as she pointed to my forehead wrinkles. Ahh, thanks, kid. Willing to try anything that may give me a glow at this point!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

hahaha the other day anton asked me why i was frowning. i was like, I’M NOT. (curses, wrinkles!)

    • HAHA My 5 year old asked me why I have cracks on my face.

  40. Louisa says...

Eucerin original. It’s like Aquaphor but less shiny.

And I know this isn’t beauty-related, but I’m an evangelist for this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NIYV78O
So next up, do a favorite-cleaning-products round up. :)

  41. Kate says...

I am currently looking at a Target through the window from where I’m sitting at work, and I’m going to run over there at lunch and see if they have this in stock! I’m excited to see how it compares to my Neutrogena Norwegian Formula lotion.

    • Sarah says...

Neutrogena Norwegian is my favorite hand cream!

  42. Lindsay says...

Can’t use it on my facial skin as it has perfume added to it. Too bad!

  43. Susanne says...

I use Skin Food on my face – and on my feet …
Helps everywhere and is just wonderful.

  44. Katha says...

Oh I never came across this one.
Thanks for the tip. I‘ll try it.

I use Weleda Cold Creme for my face on a daily basis – I have very dry skin and after trying out different things I always come back to it.

  45. Carrie says...

It’s weird that I’m a bit of a product junkie and I don’t have anything like this that I “can’t live without”. Very interested to try it! So then it’s meant for body but can be used on the face also..?

  46. Steph says...

Never used it in my cheeks, only on my late summer alligator legs. Thanks for the tip!

  47. Meg says...

    Tea tree oil for everything.

Weleda almond face wash cream stuff.

Bite lip mask and balm in the winter for lips and under the nose.

  48. My cure-all is squalane! It’s a component of your own skin oils, so it sinks in smoothly. Many people like the pricey sugarcane version from Biossance, but a big pump bottle of the olive oil kind is only $25 from Timeless, which makes it cheap enough to slather everywhere, and it soaks in beautifully, unlike heavier oils. It’s also got a perfect safety rating from the environmental working group, which is more than I can say for most of my routine. My husband and I both use it, and we’re dewier than ever.

    • june says...

Love squalane, i use the Ordinary brand

    • A Martin says...

Ooh Im intrigued!! This checks so many boxes for me (price, free of chemicals and super effective). Thanks for the tip!

    • Callie says...

Love this stuff too! Also use The Ordinary brand…I feel like it keeps you looking dewy for a good portion of the day.

    • Deborah says...

Ooh thanks for the tip! How do you use it? Like before moisturizing?

  49. diana kokoszka says...

Love Skin Food! Another big multi-purpose product for me is Josie Maran Argan Oil. I suppose you can use any old oil that you react well too- but I really like the one she offers. It doesn’t clog my pores and it’s not too heavy to put in your hair. I use it before makeup to moisturize my skin without dealing with a thick layer of cream. I throw it in my brows and put some finishing swipes over my cheekbones after makeup.

    • Joaquina says...

Argan oil is my number one must-have! I put it on my skin and hair every night. It would def. go with me on an interplanetary journey!

    • Cindy says...

Another vote for Josie Maran Argan Oil. I bought it to use for my face/neck/backs of hands, but I find myself reaching for it all the time. My only must-have.

    • Julie says...

The sunscreen of this from Josie Maran is also baller. I use it on my face and it smells amazing and is super hydrating!

    • A Martin says...

Have you tried the argan oil from Trader Joe’s? It is $6.99. I wonder how it would compare.

    • Carly says...

You guys, prepare to have your minds blown. If you love Josie Maran Argan Oil, try Kahina Organics Argan Oil. The first time you smell it, you’ll be like, “OHHHHHH….” It has a rich, nutty smell that I now realize Josie Maran kind of has… but older and slightly rancid in comparison. It’s the fresher, better quality version, and it just works better!

    • Mel says...

Karly- I use the Kahina argan too and I agree- it’s a very nutty/toasted scent. After I apply as a facial moisturizer, I use the small excess amount on my fingertips for the ends of my hair and it’s the perfect subtle shine.

    • Sarah says...

For me, it’s Acure Marula Oil! Good for everything :)

  50. Lucy says...

I started using this after deciding I needed to spend less on skincare and I read that Sharon Stone has been using it (and not much else) for years. I use it on my face before bed, although I wish it didn’t smell like a gin and tonic! Good tip about the cheekbones—I’ll have to try that!

    • Rae says...

Yes! It smells exactly like a gin and tonic! I love gin and tonics, as a summer beverage, but I really wish the cream didn’t smell like this. It is the only thing that helps my 8 year old daughter’s dry hands. I don’t feel so good about sending her to school each morning smelling like an alcoholic beverage. : (

  51. Not sure if lipstick counts here, but I have been wearing Clinique Black Honey Almost Lipstick since I was in the 7th grade. (I’m 38 now.) It is literally perfect. I immediately ordered Skin Food, though. You ROCK, Caroline. Keep sharing all your tips with us.

    • Tonya says...

Same! When friends see me put it on they always, “Hey, I used to wear that in high school.”

    • Julie Jackson says...

Pink Chocolate fan here, I’d forgotten Black Honey!

  52. AJ says...

Mine is Caudalie dry oil. It is admittedly pricey but it smells divine and lasts forever.

  53. Angela says...

There’s really nothing like it! I use it daily year-round, but I especially appreciate it during the cold, dark winter months, when everything is extra dry; it smells so fresh, green and sunshiny and always cheers me up a bit!

  54. Maire says...

I have been using the beauty products from Trader Joe’s for a few years now, and they keep putting out more things! I specifically love the “enrich” face moisturizer (contains SPF 15), the coconut body butter, the tea tree oil cleanser, blueberry & acai scrub, the rose water spray toner, and now they just put out a lemongrass & coconut body oil. The best part is, everything is so reasonably priced!

    • Erin says...

I LOVE the blueberry acai scrub! Pretty sure The Body Deli makes it for them- the ingredients are nearly identical, but it’s a fraction of the price!

  55. Sherri says...

I’m going to try it! My go everywhere on everything product is Aquaphor.

    • LG says...

      Aquaphor is life!

    • Eliza says...

How do you use the aquaphor? Curious as I have an extra tub sitting in my cabinet, and would love to make use of it.

  56. Kay says...

Ordering this online right now! I need to look like I’ve been kissed by a unicorn!
Side note: I love your writing. And your hair.

  57. Martina says...

I love Skin Food, use it as my night cream :)
Also curious – which book are you holding in your pic? I always need more book recs :) Thanks!

    • Katie says...

Are you on Facebook? Search “Bitter is the new bookclub” and/or “Spiveys (book stack empji) club” for two fun FB book clubs :) It’s where I get a ton of recs!

    • Martina says...

Oh super cool! Thanks so much Katie, will check it out! xxx

  58. I once read Victoria Beckham saying it was her secret beauty product. Skin Food is the best!

  59. Zara says...

Hurray for a *cruelty-free* cult classic being feautured here! More, please. Skin food is my winter go-to, although I lighten up the lotion for summer (Dr. Organics pure castile shea butter).

PS I always include Weleda’s calendula diaper care cream in my new baby gift – it is a never-fail hit.

    • Alex says...

      ZAra
Me too on the baby cream!

  60. l. s. says...

I’m like that with Aquaphor. When the tube gets low, I cut it open & scrape out the rest….

    • Caroline Donofrio says...

I’ve never thought to do that! Will start immediately…

    • Claire says...

Oh it’s a great idea! I do it all the time. Cut the bottom off with scissors and make the tube short enough that I can get in and get all the residual product out. There is actually a lot that clings to the sides after you think the tube is empty. It really extends the time between refills. If you really are committed you can scrape out what’s left with a tiny spatula and put it in a plastic pot with a lid, otherwise I just fit the separated top and bottom back together so they overlap each other to close it up.

  61. Emily says...

Skin Food is truly the workhorse of my beauty products. I used it on my eyelids after they got crazy dry this winter and looked like crepe fabric (I’m 33?!), and within days they were back to normal.

And I agree, the best use of it overall is as a pseudo-highlighter around the eyes. It’s not glittery, not shiny, but adds the perfect amount of glow for my cheekbones and around my eyes.

All of this for around $8 a tube!

  62. Nane says...

Haha, what an amazing timing! About an hour ago I rushed into Rossman (german drugstore) at the train station to get my usual weleda day cream when I saw the skin food and wondered what it is and how to use it. But I was too short on time to further investigate. For the same reason and same use, Kaufmann’s Kindercreme is very popular in Germany.

  63. Amy says...

I love Burt’s Bees Blemish Stick. I always make sure I have a fresh one when the current one is running low. If I get this magic elixir on a pimple early enough, the thing dissolves away.

  64. Tina says...

Love the skin foot too. But I also always keep Waxelene around. It’s even an even cleaner and versatile product. It can be used on kids too. This probably sounds like I work for Waxelene, but I’m just a big fan. I just got a new jar yesterday.

    • Elena Olson says...

Loved Waxelene for my daughter as a baby, still have it around four plus years later. It’s a clean version of petroleum jelly. Love!

  65. Connie says...

I have dry skin and use this every night all over my face over whatever I have previously applied to ensure and seal in maximum hydration, I really like it! P.S. You look gorgeous, Caroline!

  66. Nina says...

My Windex Cure – All is Coconut Oil: I use it to remove my mascara and lipstick at night, I have curly and dry hair so I use it also as a deep conditioner, obviously I like to cook with it and yeah, whenever one of my kids has a cold and/or a clogged nose I rub some Coconut Oil in their noses and that does the trick all the time. Also I love to put it on the skin around my fingernails when that area gets dry. Coconut Oil = Perfect <3

  67. NSH says...

I will have to try this cream. A question I would love help with. I have adult acne and use retinol which is helping a ton. In the meantime, do you have recommendations for a foundation that doesn’t exacerbate acne? Thank you.

    • Kay says...

I had a bad year of cystic acne not long ago, and switched to Bare Minerals foundation and La Roche Posay spot corrector. Game changer!

  68. Chiara says...

Thanks for sharing! My “Windex cure-all” is Eight-hour cream by Elizabeth Arden. A great classic!

    • I grew up with Nivea as the “windex” of our house. I associate the scent with my mother even more than her perfume :)

    • Joanna Goddard says...

oh my gosh, i love the smell of nivea! my english aunts all use it every day.

  69. Kato says...

Yess skin food is the best! I originally bought it as a rescue on cold winter days but that was 2 yrs ago and have had a tube at hand year round ever since! Been using it as night cream and yes it is a bit thick and sticky but in the morning my face is so soft and really feels calmed. I was a little worried about the smell/ amount of perfume at first but I’ve never had irritations because of it.

  70. Meg says...

YES- I found this product when searching for a cure for my (then infant) son’s eczema six years ago. I’ve been putting it on my cheeks for that pick-me-up glow every winter since!

    • kathy says...

does it work on eczema? my 3 year old has been having a horrible bout on her legs and looking for anything that would help

    • Meg says...

Kathy, yes it helped his eczema but his case was fairly mild. It’s worth a try!

    • Capucine says...

My nephew had the worst case of eczema imaginable from infancy and his diligent mom eventually hit on a formula to clear it. Egyptian Magic healing ointment (Trader Joes or Whole Foods, avoid Amazon for this one) for flares, a specific soap flake for laundry called…Dr something, Calder maybe?, and removing wheat, eggs, dairy, soy, and peanuts.

  71. Rachel says...

I always use every last drop of my Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish which also comes with a muslin cloth to gently exfoliate…it’s also plant based and is the only thing that soothes my troubled skin, and it has won so many awards.

  72. Nina M Leung says...

Lucas’s paw paw. I go through tubes of it and now finally got a jar that I use all the time for everything on everyone in the family. Now when they come to me with ailments my kids now say “I’ll put some paw paw on it”.

  73. india says...

Yes! This is definitely my take-to-mars-beauty-product too!!! I’ve been using it for a few years now and I’m still in love!

  74. Gina says...

YESSSSS! Skin food forever! I first heard about it on Katie Jane Hughes’ Instagram, and I’ve been hooked ever since!

  75. Heather says...

I love Weleda Skin Food. That herby smell. That name! But the best thing is its unmatched ability to heal your nose during a cold. You know when you’re congested and the endless tissuing leaves the skin around and under your nostrils red and irritated and peely? A dab of Skin Food heals it overnight like a MIRACLE.

  76. jade says...

I love Skin Food! I think it is a favourite of Makeup Artist Katie Jane Hughes as well whose skin always ALWAYS looks incredible.

    • Caroline Donofrio says...

I love her! She is a genius.

  77. Emily says...

I love your writing! I was laughing all through out this post! More writing please :)

  78. Yes! I love Skin Food. My skin is dry but I am also prone to breakouts when I am eating too much sugar. It’s a tricky combination, because if I use something too heavy it tends to clog my pores and contributes to breakouts but if I use something too light my skin sucks it right up and goes on being dry and flaky. But Skin Food is the perfect combo of rich and super duper moisturizing without any of the synthetic crap that clogs you up. I use it on my face as a night cream and always wake up dewy.

  79. I just read Victoria Beckham also uses Skin Food! (I like to mix it with Glossier’s Skin Tint and use that as my tinted moisturizer.) It’s the best product no matter where you use it, and it’s so cheap.

  80. Molly says...

Aquaphor. It’s my savior in the dry, Arizona air…

  81. Sara says...

Yes! I love this stuff! Yet another thing I miss about living in Germany..

  82. Bianca says...

Yes, for me it is Vaseline!

  83. Becky says...

I tend to lose interest in most beauty products before I’ve used them up, but I have two “old faithfuls” that I buy on repeat and use religiously. The first is Clinique Moisture Surge. I use it every night before bed, every morning under my makeup AND on top of my makeup (just on my cheekbones) for a dewy glow, plus on my lips, on my cuticles, as a mask, as a balm, you get the idea. I would use it in a box, I would use it wearing socks, I do use it here and there, I do use it everywhere! Clinique could start charging a million dollars for the stuff and I would find a way to have it. Second is Carmex. Not only is it the very best lip balm, but it shrinks pimples overnight, makes fingernails gleam and smells like childhood. I buy it in bulk and keep it in every room of the house, my purse, my kids’ backpacks, and my pocket every day.

  84. Rachel Adrianna says...

Caroline, do you still use that hairstyling tool?! I was wondering that the other day LOL

    • Caroline Donofrio says...

Hahaha, I sure do! Just used it this morning…

  85. Amy says...

Oh my goodness I love that movie! The Dad?
Also, I love everything you write ?

  86. Aimee says...

I just put this on my wishlist on Pharmaca’s website. They are always sending me great email discounts. The perfect lotion is hard to find so I’m looking forward to trying this one. Thank you!

  87. K says...

Yes! Skinfood is my go to face product… I use it everyday as my main moisturizer and it is the only thing that helps me battle flakiness in the windy, cold New Zealand winters. I find it is quite thick though, so I tend to rub it on my hand a little first to warm it and then apply by dabbing it on my skin. Also love that it is so affordable!

  88. Liz Monaco says...

I have a silly question. What color paint is on the wall behind you? And this skin lotion is another great recommendation form Cup of Jo, thanks!

    • Caroline Donofrio says...

Not silly at all! It’s Poppy Seed from Behr. (Looks like a dark grey/black in dimmer lighting, and more of a navy in daylight.)

  89. Tami says...

I really wanted to love Skin Food but the smell is odd and off-putting….I can’t be the only one who feels this way.
    Anyone?

    • Jessica says...

      Strong agree.

    • Meg says...

strong perfume and sticky/slow to absorb

    • I picked up a travel size to try and immediately didn’t like the smell. Then once, just to use it up, I threw it in my purse and used Skin Food without thinking while on an airplane. I was immediately SO regretful . . . It must have made people around me cringe. : \

  90. Candice says...

I swear by the Beautycounter cleansing balm – makeup remover, mask – it’s my everything.

  91. Lauren says...

Sounds like the cure all I need!! Breastfeeding has my skin sooooo dry. I’ve tried several other things so far that haven’t made much of a difference – excited to try this!! I love multi use products and was so excited that this has ingredients that don’t up my anxiety.

  92. Katie says...

Great price on Amazon too! Under $9!

  93. shannon says...

An all natural, non-sponsored, COJ-recommended miracle beauty product available for less than $10 at Target!!? Ordered. ? Thanks for the tip!

  94. Adelaide says...

Weleda, always, in every iteration! But mostly their Gentle Cleansing Milk, the scent of which settles me in such a profound way when I wash my face every evening. It also leaves my skin looking and feeling surprisingly youthful, for a 4th grade teacher/mom of two small kids.

  95. MJ says...

my husband gets a tube of skin food at every birthday/christmas! not sure if he notices how much i use it but it is his “windex” but our household is addicted. but i’ve never tried it cheekbones…will soon!

  96. Arielle Parker-Trout says...

I found Skin Food in an organic food store in Barcelona, a tiny travel size! Of course you can get it anywhere but now I have fond travel memories of it! Such a great product.

  97. Amanda says...

Hm, Into the Gloss does a very similar post, “Things We Finish.”

  98. Emma says...

For me- it’s cuticura- it’s basically a Canadian Neosporin, but it works a million times better and quicker. I swear if I have a cut or pimple
And put it on, it’s gone the next day. They don’t always manufacture it, but when it’s available my whole family stocks up (we’ve even been known to give it away as gifts lol).

  99. Hali says...

Bless Balm by Leahlani! It’s for your face but I find myself using it for everything. It’s a little precious price-wise, but I’ve reached for it for blisters, elbows, makeup remover, pre-cleansing, priming, evening moisturizer when I want to seal in serums and wake up extra glowy before a big day…

  100. Janice O'Kane says...

Skin Food is amazing! I agree, it is perfect for travel to Mars – and everyday use here on Earth!

  101. Liz says...

One Love Organics Skin Savior is an amazing product. It’s changed my skin! Highly recommend!!!!

  102. Jenna says...

Skin Food is the best! I got some in Germany earlier this year and have been using it as my nighttime face moisturizer. I look oily AF before bed but when I wake up I look dewy and refreshed. AMAZING stuff.

  103. I bought some when I was in Amsterdam last Christmas and my skin was absolutely freaking out (I live in a tropical, humid climate). I put it on my face each evening before going to bed and it worked such wonders in repairing and revitalizing my skin!

  104. WildWomanOfWongo says...

Agreed! My NYC-radiator-heat winter skin DRINKS UP skin food. My summer version is the truly amazing (and totally cool) everydayoil which is made in NY in small batches. I just ordered two bottles for the summer and I use it for absolutely everything… I wash my face with it, use it to apply my zinc sunblock, I use it for my body, for a weekly hair deep-moisturizing… I’m a sucker for minimalism and this product has totally got me. (Everydayoil.com)

  105. Ahh, Skin Food is so wonderful. My knuckles and the pads of my fingertips sometimes crack in the winter (gorgeous, yes I know), and Skin Food is one of the few lotions/balms/miracle elixirs that actually helps. It also smells wonderful, which is definitely a plus. When my tube ran out (it was a sad day), I tried to replace it with Weleda’s slightly cheaper orange tube, the Sea Buckthorn formula, but neither the smell nor the effectiveness were anywhere near close to Skin Food. I’m excitedly waiting for the sea buckthorn to run out so I can go back to the far superior green tube! Still a little scared to try something so thick on my face, but maybe I’ll give it a shot as a luminizer?!

  106. Josephine says...

    Adds to cart…
    Thanks for the intel!

  107. Mary says...

    I love Cerave night cream!

Ps. are you guest posting Caroline or back!? :)

    • Amy says...

I started using Cerave’s night cream about a month ago with Paula’s Choice 8% AHA with glycolic acid then Cerave’s Renewing Serum Facial Moisturizer with Hyaluronic Adic and Niacinamide before the night cream and I see the biggest difference in my face and get so many compliments! And the price is right!

  108. Jen says...

My “mars” product is Elta md sunscreen after reading about it on this site!

  109. Anna says...

RMS living luminizer. Four or five years of love. I keep a back up stocked just in case.

  110. Cat says...

I am definitely a Skin Food lover. It’s the best, but I never use it on my face – until now! Kissed by a unicorn? Sign me up. My favorite way to use it is to mix it with coconut oil when I have time to swan around in a robe after a shower- so good. I feel moisturized for so long.

  111. Carolyn says...

The green skin food is great for bug bites. Seriously!

  112. Becky says...

I love Biafine. It is no longer available in US, I was prescribed it, but it is over the counter in France. You just need to ask for it in a pharmacy. I went crazy when in Paris last year. I have also bought it from Amazon Canada. It is a non steroidal emollient. My dad used it when he had chemical treatment done for skin cancer and the healing time is insane! I have used in for sun burns, reactions from products, razor burn. Its also a fabulous winter moisturizer. When I found out that it was no longer available here I had a near meltdown. I’ve tried generic prescription versions many years ago and they were awful. Gotta have the real stuff!

  113. Stephanie Henry says...

Vaseline! Fixes flyaways in a hurry, reinvigorates dry and itchy skin, and gives a dewy glow with just a few dabs.

    • Becky says...

Ive been using vaseline intensive care, the white container not yellow or green, since I was 13. I’m now 33. I use it every time i wash my hands. I keep a tube of it in my purse, a bottle at work, a bottle at home. I use ceravae on my face and for flyaways!

  114. sasha says...

I go through loads of home made skin salve/balm. Melt together 1/2 cup olive oil, 1/4 cup beeswax, 1/4 cup coconut oil until liquid then pour into small jars/tins. I use it as a body balm after showers in the winter, hand balm every day (the beeswax really holds the moisture to your skin) and on my face if it’s a little dry, after almond oil cleansing. I also use for little ones scratches and boo boos, chapped noses and winter cheeks. It really helps protect kiddo skin from winter cold. Good on knees, elbows, cuticles. Dirt cheap and easy to make.

  115. Greer says...

Garnier Micellar Water! It has totally, totally changed how I feel about my skin… and it’s so cheap and so easy. I bought four massive bottles of it the other day because it was on special and I know I’m going to use it all eventually.

  116. I have to say the best balm is Ruby Coals Botanical Balm!

  117. Anna says...

Skin Food is the best. I first discovered their calendula baby line when my daughter was born- I have eczema on my hands and calendula is great for that. It really helped smooth my skin. Yes, baby cream. Enter Skin Food, which gets plus points for the name and for being the only thing that could protect my cheeks from vicious NE winter cold.

  118. I LOVE Weleda Skin Food! A little bit goes such a long way!

  119. Lisa says...

I got some a couple of months ago after reading a recommendation for it on Man Repeller … it’s glorious! It works so well (my skin has been really sensitive thanks to a long winter), and it smells like the healthiest smoothie ever. And – it’s not very expensive (at least in Europe).
The product I’m most loyal to is Eve Lom cleansing balm. I’ve used it for over a decade and it still does the job Because you use a muslin cloth to clean, you cleanse and exfoliate at the same time, it removes all the dirt and doesn’t dry out your skin

  120. Katy says...

Rosebud Salve. Same reasons. Same uses.

    • Daniela says...

True Botanicals cleanser is one of the few things I always finish! Their tinted sunscreen is reaching that level too.

    • Katie says...

Same. For the last 17 years. ♥️

    • JB says...

Someone in CoJ comments recommended putting rosebud salve on dry elbows and it. has. changed. my. life!

  121. Alyssa says...

I feel this way about Everyday Oil! It’s my go-to product for everything. Softens up tough, dry skin. Helps heal up a sunburn. Smells amazing. Smooths frizzy, dry hair. Removes make-up at the end of the day. It’s the only beauty product that I consistently finish and reorder.

    • Katie says...

Yes Everyday Oil! Hair, lips, cuticles, face, eye make-up remover, moisturizer, shaving cream replacement, cracked heels ON AND ON ❤️ I love the smell too, though I believe they have unscented as well.

    • Elizabeth R says...

I am just about finished with my first bottle of this and love it. And for those folks sensitive to scents, she released an odorless Everyday Oil.

    • Heather says...

+1 – it has replaced almost all skin care needs when I travel. I use it to wash my face, moisturize face and body, shave – my skin responds so well to it

    • Heidi says...

I came here to say this… I love Everyday Oil! The smell alone is worth it, but I use it on my face and the backs of my hands at night, and my skin looks so nourished and bright in the morning.

    • Courtney says...

I feel this way about Everyday Oil too! I have four bottles in my house. One in my bathroom, in my son’s room, in the kitchen, and for my bag. I put it on my toddler’s face every night as well as wash my own face with it. I had cystic acne for SEVEN YEARS (SEVEN!) and it was the only thing that healed it (even after two months of anti-biotics…which is so bad for you.) I swear by it.

    • Christina says...

This sounds like a great product! Where do you find it?

    • Claire says...

      Christina- find it here: https://everydayoil.com
I am going to give it a try too.

  122. Monica says...

YES!!! I discovered Skin Food because stars like Julia Roberts swear by it. (I squeeze that tin tube to the max!!). And you should also try their amazing Seabuckthorn Hand Lotion, which soaks in quickly, smells great, and is not at all greasy.

  123. Jay says...

This tube (same size) is currently $8.29 at Target!

    • Esvee says...

Thanks for that heads up! I love this product and go through a ton. Just placed an order with target.

    • Carly says...

      Amazon too!

  124. Sara says...

Ooo! Bookmarked on Amazon! Funny – I read “feeling dry after a FIGHT?” Like maybe there’s a Cup of Jo fight club? Ha!

  125. I feel this way about Thayers Rose Petal Witch Hazel Toner for my face. I’ve gone through at least 3 huge bottles since last summer. My face sucks it up and it has completely changed my skin! It’s the one beauty thing I can no longer live without!

    • katy says...

Amen! I use the Aloe Vera version but it’s pretty much the same thing. I always bring it to those ‘Favorite Things’ parties

    • Felechia says...

Me too! I always buy two bottles because I never want to run out!

    • Aimee says...

Yep! It’s the perfect toner. I’ve been using it for years. It has a nice smell too.

    • KL says...

I wanted this to work so badly for me! It worked BEAUTIFULLY for a few days, like, radiant skin and all, but then I sadly had some serious breakouts. I tried to keep it going thinking it was just a skin purge, but the breakouts didn’t stop. I stopped using it, and the breakouts stopped. I tried it again several months later and the same thing happened. Gave it to my best friend and BAM, best skin she’s ever had. Totally agree this is an amazing product, just not for me.

  126. Yes! I received a small tube of Skin Food in a sample package of Weleda products and have been searching for it in stores ever since. Guess I need to join the 21st century and go online!

    • Emily says...

Try health food markets, that’s often where I find it. In Canada some pharmacies carry it as well

    • Amanda says...

      My Target always has it!

    • ekbnyc says...

They also have it at Whole Foods

    • Sara says...

      They have it at Target!

    • Karen says...

I’ve seen it at Whole Foods!
