If you’re newly dating someone sweet, but you’re not exactly sure what’s up, go for something simple, like a heartfelt card or dinner at the bar of a restaurant (what it is that’s so sexy about sitting at the bar?). Or you could challenge them to a game of Chinese checkers or our all-time favorite Codenames, which I’ve played six times this week already.
For those in long-distance relationships, who wish they were together, send something cute like the epic cookies from Levain Bakery in New York, a bouquet of ranunculus flowers (Urban Stems always nails it), or a retro baseball cap featuring their favorite team (bonus: everyone looks cuter in a baseball cap).
Happy Galentine’s! If you’d like to treat your best friend to a little surprise, go for this book of chocolates, which comes in the most incredible flavors. (My friend Erin gave these to me recently, and I was blown away.) Or consider a beauty treatment to do together, like a moon mask or mani/pedi date at your neighborhood salon.
If you’re married with young kids and craving romance, go for a cheerful red sweater (for men, too), a necklace with their pet name, or the all-time best caramel to pour over ice cream after the kids are in bed.
For the person who doesn’t believe in Valentine’s but still wants to be cute, consider copies of the new novel Dear Edward for a two-person book club. You could take a hand-holding walk around town and just enjoy each other’s company. Or curate a cheese tower or mini cheese plate. Says a reader named Escondista: “Every year for Valentine’s Day, I buy my husband four of five nice tiny portions of cheese. I go to Central Market’s cheese area and ask for recommendations and tell them I want $3 worth of each. Bonus: I get to sample.”
Thoughts? Any other surprises and delights that you would add?
P.S. How to keep the spark alive, and my sister’s awesome dating tip. Plus, Valentine’s Day, three ways.
