9 Couples With the Best On-Screen Chemistry

9 Couples With the Best On-Screen Chemistry

Are you ever watching a TV show or movie where the on-screen couple is so electric that you almost can’t handle it? Here are nine movies and TV shows where I felt that way (and I’d love to hear yours)…

before sunrise

Have you seen the Before Sunrise triology? Sultry Julie Delpy and scruffy Ethan Hawke have such a natural connection, you’re rooting for them before they even get off the train in Vienna.

call me by your name

9 Couples With the Best On-Screen Chemistry

On the first day of rehearsal for Call Me By Your Name, director Luca Guadagnino asked stars Armie Hammer and Timothée Chalamet to flip to a page in the script, which happened to be a kissing scene in the grass. “So, then we started making out. And we’re making out, and making out, and making out, and no one’s saying stop,” Hammer explained on The Ellen Show. “All of a sudden, we both kind of stop and look, and Luca had just walked away and left us right there, rolling around in the grass.” It was definitely an icebreaker, laughs Chalamet: “It destroyed the ice.”

insecure

When, on Insecure, Issa and her ex Daniel start hanging out, you can cut the tension with a knife. They speak the same language and really get each other.

fleabag

fleabag

Fleabag. Two words: IT’LL PASS.

catastrophe

No matter how much Sharon and Rob argue in Catastrophe, they still laugh at each other’s jokes. You can see why they drive each other crazy and love each other madly. One example from season 2: Sharon and Rob are fighting, and when he gets into bed, she tells him not to touch her. He responds, “If you come anywhere near me, I’m going to scream.” Facing away from him, Sharon laughs, and boom, the fight is over. (I loved all four seasons of this show.)

I watched Lion on a flight and was sobbing like a baby! Such an incredible movie, and the connection between Rooney Mara’s and Dev Patel’s characters was tender and beautiful.

9 Couples With the Best On-Screen Chemistry

New Girl is such a light sitcom that I didn’t expect Nick and Jess to have serious on-screen chemistry. But the witty repartee! Those smoldering gazes! That first kiss in the hallway! Even the actors had to be held back. Says Jake Johnson, who played Nick: “Liz [Meriwether, the creator] has told us a lot of times in scenes, ‘Jake, don’t put your hand there. It’s too forward.’ They keep pushing us apart.”

9 Couples With the Best On-Screen Chemistry

The thing that really got me about A Star Is Born is how close-up the shots were. During intense scenes, the camera was almost in their faces, and it made the chemistry feel extra fiery.

Finally, although it’s not really sexual, the friend chemistry in Broad City was off the charts. Abbi and Ilana had a funny yet profound connection. “Here’s the truth: Friendships between women are often the deepest and most profound love stories, but they are often discussed as if they are ancillary, ‘bonus’ relationships to the truly important ones. Women’s friendships outlast jobs, parents, husbands, boyfriends, lovers, and sometimes children,” wrote Emily Rapp. Two other amazing friendships: Leslie and Ann in Parks and Rec and Maya and Anna in Pen15.

What would you add? The couple in the new movie Plus One had a great vibe, and I loved the kiss in A Room With A View. Please weigh in below, these are the important questions!

P.S. My forever celebrity crushes, and what are your top three movies of all time?

  4. Erin R says...

Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer in True Blood. And that’s why they’re married now! Blushing just thinking about some of those scenes…

Gina Rodriguez and Justin Baldoni in Jane the Virgin! Even when they’re not together in the show, you see the deep, pure platonic love and respect the actors have for each other IRL that translates into exceptional chemistry onscreen!!!

  7. Lauren says...

That one scene in Working Girl, when Alec Baldwin and Melanie Griffith dance to Lady in Red? Oh, and Jude Law and Nicole Kidman in Cold Mountain.

  8. Stacey says...

Aziraphale and Crowley from Good Omens! (An angel and a demon, for those of you who haven’t seen or read it.) I’m 100% on board with their friendship/bromance/romance/whatever the hell it is. It’s beautiful.

    • Emma says...

OMG YES. I can’t believe I didn’t think of this! I love that their chemistry is so powerful it can’t be defined, it seems appropriate for godly beings.

  9. Anonygirl says...

Essie Davis and Nathan Page in Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries. You can cut the sexual tension with a knife, but that season three finale (which is the series finale) is so spot on, if a little predictable.

    • MM says...

      YES!!!!

    • Ranwi says...

Yes! One of the many reasons why I love that show.

  10. Glenda says...

Kevin Costner and Susan Sarandon in Bull Durham.

    • Rae says...

      oh yes

  11. Lauren E. says...

They don’t play a couple on screen, but Peter Krause and Lauren Graham have INSANE onscreen chemistry in Parenthood. It almost skeeves me out that they play brother and sister on the show.

    • Lindsey Fox says...

They’re a real life couple! (If you didn’t know.)

  12. Jen says...

-Alessandro Nivola & Audrey Tatou in Coco Before Chanel
-Sally Potter & Pablo Veron in The Tango Lesson
-Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova in Once
-Jean-Louis Trintignant & Anouk Aimee in A Man and a Woman. This one floored me when I first saw it at 20, and floored me all over again at 40.

And I second so many of the ones already mentioned above! Thanks for the fun post and all the great ideas!

    • Samantha Bodamer says...

      My favorite too!

  15. Ceridwen says...

The Nanny and Mr Sheffield! Ha! There’s a scene when they are playing table tennis. Google it. .so funny.

  16. B says...

Love some of the couples in this post, and in the comments (Jim and Pam!)

But…Alicia Florrick and Will Gardner from The Good Wife. Phew, it has been a while, but those flashback scenes. Wowza.

    • J says...

Yes, Alicia and Will!! ? I’ll never get over how that ended

    • Des says...

YES. Totally agree on the fire chemistry of Alicia and Will. So tempted to go watch an old episode of the Good Wife right now..

    • Sara B says...

Yes! I just watched this whole series over maternity leave (I know) and I was devastated about Will

    • Cerises says...

      Totally agree
That elevator scene was one of the best scene ever

  17. Nisserine Whisman says...

Letty and Javier in Good Behavior

  18. Alison says...

OG George Clooney and Juliana Margulies on ER!! Doug and Carol forever!

  19. Laura C. says...

Scrolling down and no one said the best (neither did I so I do it now),
Anjelica Houston and Raúl Juliá as Morticia and Gómez Addams are GOALS.

  20. nora says...

Jason Segel and Mila Kunis + Kristen Bell and Russell Brand as a foursome in Forgetting Sarah Marshall. I was a few days overdue with my second pregnancy and a doula friend said watch something funny. Watched the unrated version and literally peed myself. Seriously.
And went into labor a few hours later!

  21. Jen says...

ER’s Doug and Carol had incredible, incredible chemistry. Sometimes after a will they/won’t they couple fiiiiiinally connects, my interest as a viewer wanes. But with them it absolutely did not. That was such a great show for so many years, largely because of them.

    • Patrick swayze and Jennifer grey!!!!!

  22. Rozanne says...

Cameron Diaz and Jude Law in The Holiday !!;-)

    • Marta says...

      YES

    • Kim says...

      Yes!

    • Gail says...

Yes… love this movie and their chemistry!

    • Lisa R says...

      YES!! Love this one!

  23. Elisabeth says...

In Elementary, Joan and Sherlock’s friend chemistry is so good. When I heard they were going to make Watson a woman, I thought it was only because they wanted to make a heterosexual romance. Fortunately, they have kept them as friends with an inexplicably wonderful friend chemistry. Love it.

    • ^^^^ Highly underrated and accurate comment!

At the end of last season when he told her he loved her and you knew it was from the deep, lucky well of friendship??? I died. That’s the love worth living for!

    • Patty says...

Yes!! One of the best written partnerships on TV ever, in my opinion.

  24. Jay says...

Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen in Pride & Prejudice. Oh man. The rain scene. The end. All of it. So good!

Growing up, I thought Cory and Topanga were together in real life lol

And always and forever, Jim and Pam

    • Francesca says...

      Yes, that rain scene!

    • Mb says...

I love that Pride and Prejudice version so much!

  25. Caitlin Scott says...

It has not passed; it shall not pass.

    • Jenn Dreier says...

      This. This. This!

    • Nia says...

      Nope, not passed.

    • Joey says...

      Never!

  26. KK says...

-Brad Pitt and Julia Ormond in Legends of the Fall
-Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette in True Romance

    • samantha says...

Oh my goodness I forgot about True Romance! They were such a beautiful pairing, off the charts chemistry!

  27. Love this list you are spot on with Before Sunrise the chemistry between them is amazing. It’s the reason (when I was younger and pre-kids) I asked out one too many people I met in trains hoping to meet my Ethan Hawke ❤️?

  28. Liz says...

Emily Blunt and Rupert Friend in The Young Victoria. The proposal scene—be still my heart.

    • Mary says...

      YES

    • san says...

  29. Hannah says...

Tim Riggins and Lyla. Actually…could just be Tim Riggins with a sock puppet. ;)

    • Megan says...

      Gaaaah- yes! Totally agree

    • Heidi says...

      Coach and Tammy Taylor, too!

    • jen says...

      Oh, yeah. Timmy Riggins forever.

    • sarah says...

God, I miss Riggins. Remember the season when he got a puppy?

    • Rae says...

      Yeeeeeees

  30. Meggie says...

Jake and Leslie on Republic of Doyle!! It’s a Canadian show that’s somewhat new to Netflix in the US but I’ve loved it since visiting St. John’s, Newfoundland five years ago. For six seasons, they are actually only together a fraction of the time but in every episode they have some interaction that keeps me watching for more! No spoilers, but it’s a tremendously satisfying ending!

  31. Julia says...

Two incredible love movies (for women!): Last chance Harvey – Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson meet by accident and spend a whole day with each other…one dreads the hour when they have to part…
Also: Une rencontre (A Chance Encounter) with Sophie Marceau. The erotic tension between her and him is absolutely worth seeing.
I also like that in both films, the protagonists are rather mature with a whole life story to tell which makes them even more appealing.

  32. Cayla says...

Josh and Donna on the West Wing…it takes years for them to get together and the build up is !!!!

    • Quinn says...

      Yes!! Totally agree!

    • Amy says...

JOSH AND DONNA GOT TOGETHER? Omg, I must finish watching. OMG!

    • Sara B says...

I also love CJ and Josh and Toby as a friend trio

  33. Robin S. says...

“Lion” not “The Lion” (but maybe it’s because we’re seeing “The Lion King” EVERYWHERE these days?! ;) And while we’re at it… Joan and Roger from Mad Men! He makes me want to pull my hair out, but I love how they’ve each placed the other on a special, secret pedestal.

  34. AE says...

I remember feeling like a third wheel all throughout Mr. and Mrs. Smith with Angelina and Brad! Talk about chemistry!

  35. Mary says...

You guyyyysss…Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler in the Wedding Singer.

    • Sara B says...

      And 50 First Dates

  36. Christine says...

Fleabag season 2 was phenomenal, and it made me fall a little in love with Andrew Scott. He’s great in Sherlock and Black Mirror, but Fleabag puts him over the top. “It’ll pass” was so real and lovely and heartbreaking.

    • jen says...

And the way he didnt say ‘i love you’ until he was walking away.

  37. Jeanne says...

I can still remember how my heart pounded during the scene where Daniel Day Lewis’s character was madly searching the fort for Madelaine Stowe’s character and then found her in “The Last of the Mohicans.” Speaking of “madly,” I loved the chemistry between Alan Rickman and Juliet Stevenson in “Truly, Madly, Deeply” – it went beyond the grave. This is showing my age, isn’t it?

    • Cathy says...

Yes! When DDL finds her and leads her away … welp… one of the most erotic moments in non-romantic film history ever.

    • Sarah says...

Oh man, “Truly, Madly, Deeply” I was so in love with that relationship!

  38. Abby says...

First thought: Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone in The Amazing Spiderman movies. They were a couple IRL and their chemistry makes that trilogy SO GOOD. And so heart-wrenching in the second film….if you know what I mean

  39. AP says...

The scene in The English Patient where Kristin Scott Thomas goes into Ralph Fiennes hotel room (after surviving a desert sand storm together) and kisses him and he literally rips her dress off. (And sews it up, later!)

Also, the love scenes between Cate Blanchett and Joseph Fiennes in Elizabeth felt so tender and true that they brought tears to my eyes. Boy, it just occurred to me that I love me some Fiennes brothers! Ha.

    • Joaquina says...

Julia Louis-Dreyfuss and Hugh Laurie in Veep. Shout out to chemistry in actors 50+.

    • Megan says...

100% agree about the English Patient…swoon!!

  40. Tari says...

Offred and Nick in Handmaid’s Tale. I haven’t finished watching the third season yet, but up to this point, I mostly watch the show just waiting for those two characters to be on screen together.

  41. Caitlyn says...

Idgie and Ruth from Fried Green Tomatoes forever and ever amen. :)

  42. Jenn Crowell says...

My teenage heart will never forget the longing and angst on my so-called life with Angela and Jordan…

    • Danielle says...

When he hold her hand and walks down the hall. … sigh

    • jen says...

Ugh. He was so sure of her. He stopped once and assumed she would be right behind him. He was adorable tho.

  43. Tabitha H says...

This might be out of left field since it’s not a rom-com, but Jason and Marie from The Bourne Identity. Something about how competent he is while also being so vulnerable with her just gets me. “Marie used to help me try to remember the names,” makes me want to ugly cry every time.

Related, Steve’s line “Even when I had nothing, I had Bucky” from Captain America the Winter Soldier ALSO makes me want to ugly cry. Still bummed that Marvel built up that relationship for 3 movies and then just… didn’t do anything with it for the last two.

    • gracemarie says...

I LOOOOOVED Jason and Marie!!! The original trilogy was so good.

    • Julee says...

YES. Him washing her hair? I about caught fire.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      “I about caught fire.” = hahaha <3

  44. Martina says...

Jonny and Omar in My Beautiful Laundrette!!

  45. molly says...

Tom Hanks + Meg Ryan: Sleepless in Seattle, You’ve Got Mail

Keira Knightley + Rupert Friend: Pride and Prejudice (she had great chemistry with Matthew Macfadyen, but Keira and Rupert went on to date IRL :)

Rachel Mcadams + Ryan Gosling: The Notebook

Sam Heughan + Caitriona Balfe: Outlander

Cary Elwes + Robin Wright: The Princess Bride

Leo Dicaprio + Kate Winslet: Titanic

Brad Pitt + Angelina Jolie: Mr. and Mrs. Smith

Colin Firth + Sienna Guillory: Love Actually

    • Erin LaDue says...

      Outlander YES!!!!!

  46. AK says...

Hands down most intense on screen chemistry is between Daniel Day Lewis and Madeleine Stowe in Last of the Mohicans. Can someone please look at me the way he does her?!:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pnQ7l7UhQTM

    • AG says...

      Oh my heavens yes.

    • Morgan says...

      Thank you for this.

  47. Courtney says...

Brad Pit and Julia Ormond in Legends of the Fall. I died. (I was 15.)

    • MariaE. says...

Julia Ormond as Susannah Fincannon: “… and does he speak English”?
      Pure chemistry there…

    • Twyla says...

That movie was filmed where I live!!

  48. Emma says...

I’m gonna have to mention Liz Lemon and Jack Donaghy in 30 Rock. Their platonic chemistry is so strong and special. I may be biased, as I have a friendship very much like theirs and it’s been one of the most powerful, rewarding relationships of my life.

    • ashley says...

OH MY GOD YES. Want to be besties!?

    • Grace says...

Absolutely! I was so devastated when 30 Rock ended, and now it’s gone from Netflix too :( It’s such a well written show and I couldn’t imagine anyone other than Tina and Alec bantering in those roles.

    • Megan says...

YES!! Also, Tina and Amy in anything, always.

    • Mb says...

Yes!!! And Tracy Morgan’s charisma can stand alone!

  49. Pamela Hamer says...

Jane and Michael! Team Michael all the way!

  50. anne says...

Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey in Dirty Dancing are my all time favorite couple. But then again, who wouldn’t have great chemistry with Swayze? I’d carry all the watermelons on the East Coast to get a dance with him.

  51. Andrea Orzoff says...

I just read all the comments, and people, I am flabbergasted to be the first to say BUFFY AND ANGEL FOREVER. Also, Joss Whedon, grr to you for taking Buffy and Firefly off Netflix. (shakes fist vainly at the air)

    • Leah says...

      Yes!!!!!!

    • Sequoia says...

I came to say this!!! I was in middle school maybe…. and I truly thought that was what first love was going to be like for years. Ugh the disappointment is still real.

  52. Jessica says...

It’s an older classic and maybe a bit of a cliche, but Patrick Swaze and Demi Moore in Ghost sizzle.

    • Jessica says...

And an even older classic, Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer in the Sound of Music. Watching them fall in love used to make me blush as a kid.

    • Laura C. says...

Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer YES
It makes me think about the great gentlemen of movies of that time, Richard Chamberlain and Rachel Ward in “The Thorn Birds” were AMAZING

    • caro says...

YES to Ghost and sound of music, two of my all time favorite movies. My mom told me when I was older that she read somewhere that Christopher Plummer was drunk throughout the entire filming of that movie, and Julie was always very annoyed of him. ;) Makes me laugh but doesn’t lessen the chemistry they have!

  53. Sofia says...

Ronny and Loretta in Moonstruck. Forever for always.

    • Rose says...

Gah! Yes! Moonstruck forever and ever!

  54. Al Pacino and Penelope Ann Miller in Carlito’s Way. When he comes to her apartment and breaks the chain on the door and grabs her.

    • Joaquina says...

Ah good one! Apparently that had a brief affair whilst filming then Pacino abruptly ended it. Rumor was that he broke her heart (sounds cliché and kinda shitty but believable).

  55. MC says...

Meredith and Cristina on Grey’s Anatomy of course, one of the reasons to stick with the show.

Another of mine would be Felicity Jones and Anton Yelchin in Like Crazy – swoon

    • Eloise says...

      YESto Meredith and Christina!!

    • kk says...

Yes, those two in Like Crazy for sure.

    • I second Felicity Jones and Anton Yelchin in Like Crazy. Love that movie.

    • Emily B says...

I absolutely love Like Crazy. What a tragedy to lose Anton Yelchin so young.

    • Melissa says...

Anton and Felicity’s chemistry in Like Crazy was incredible. Such a heartbreakingly moving movie, and not to mention the first time I heard Ingrid Michaelson’s cover of “Can’t Help Falling in Love” — swoon!

  56. Colleen says...

Leo & Kate in Titanic. Forever & ever, amen. I love seeing photos of them together IRL too <3

  57. grace says...

michelle dockery and dan stevens as mary and matthew on downton abbey! especially the scene where they are dancing and kissing in the living room by themselves right before they get caught by his fiancee.

    • Colleen S says...

Mine has always been when they were at the hunt, and Mary’s stupid fiance tells her she’s with him, and Matthew pipes up and says that Mary had promised him. She seems confused, and then realizes he’s helping her out. She confirms Matthew’s statement, and they share a glance, with Matthew smiling. That part always kills me.

    • Lisa R says...

Yes, I still miss Mary and Matthew!

  58. Jena says...

Chuck and Blair (Ed Westwick and Leighton Meester) in Gossip Girl is the first couple I thought of! Swoon :D

    • Ronja says...

Definitely! I really don’t want to know how many times I rewatched all those episodes just because of Chuck & Blair. I don’t think I’ll ever get over their chemistry.

    • E. says...

Thank you – I scrolled through the comments just to make sure they were mentioned! Best on-screen couple ever imo. :)

  59. Emily says...

Daniel Levy (David) and Noah Reid (Patrick) in Schitt’s Creek! They make the kind of couple you simply CAN’T resist rooting for. It’s the kind of relationship you WANT, more so than the smoldering, super-intense that feels like it’ll burn out once the scene is over.

    • Rosie says...

This is my favorite relationship in any show ever. I love them so much!

    • Cece says...

Yes! Patrick and David are one of my favourite on-screen couples EVER. The way they boo see each other so clearly but still adore everything about each other just gives me heart-eyes. It’s one of the most positive, touching representations of any relationship I’ve seen in a comedy.

    • Faith says...

I was coming here to say this! YES, David and Patrick forever.

    • Mouse says...

      Yup. Definitely. Patrick SEES David.

  60. Belle says...

Coach Taylor and Tammy Taylor in Friday Night Lights are #couplegoals

    • Liz says...

      Second this!!

    • cg says...

      FNL!!!
      Yaaaasssss!

    • Lauren E. says...

      YES!

    • GoBlueMom says...

      YES! YES! YES!

  61. J says...

This is some good content, Jo! Can’t wait to read all the comments. Josh and Donna from The West Wing are a forever fave.

    • kk says...

Josh + Donna – the early seasons are the best.

    • Hayley says...

      YES

    • Sarah says...

      YES to Josh and Donna!

  62. Emily says...

There’s a 2001 Michelle Williams’ movie called Take This Waltz and the chemistry she has with Luke Kirby is insane. You have to forgive like the last maybe 10 minutes of the movie but otherwise, it’s such a good film. Also stars Sarah Silverman and Seth Rogen.

I’ve been flying a lot and like to watch romantic comedies when I do. I forgot how funny The Break Up with Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn is-they have good comedic chemistry.

    • Emily says...

      Sorry 2011! Not 2001

    • Katie says...

Oh my gosh, YES! I totally forget about that movie, but it’s a gem. Their chemistry is crazy!

  63. Lisa says...

It’ll pass…When he said that, I felt like I had the wind knocked out of me. There’s so much truth and sadness in those words.

  64. Amanda says...

Rachel McAdams and Domhnall Gleeson are so real and sweet in About Time (it’s my forever watchable movie)
Jonathan Groff and Raúl Castillo are smoldering in Looking (series on HBO).
I’m a 30 something year old that watches Riverdale and will not apologize and I love Betty and Jughead’s relationship, however unbelievable the plot lines are :)
My fave friendships to watch are the Broad City gals, Issa and Molly on Insecure (and their extended group!), and Villanelle and Eve on Killing Eve (technically not a friendship?? a one sided friendship?).

    • kathleen says...

Oh, I forgot about those two in Looking. Loved that show.

  65. Samantha says...

This is such a great list. I came here to say Lana Condor and Noah Centineo in To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before :)

    • Sarah Roman says...

Yes- the hot tub scene was perfection.

  66. Emma says...

Feeling a little ache over the last one. Still looking for a best girl friend.

    • Sarz says...

Emma, I feel you! Platonic chemistry in movies and TV grabs me even more than the romantic kind. Surely we aren’t the only ones feeling that something’s missing without that type of connection. I know she’s out there somewhere. ?

  67. celeste says...

I’ve only seen a couple of these – will catch up on a few.

Jim and Pam. Always and forever.

    • Tammy Sutherland says...

      JIM AND PAM!

    • Emily says...

      Jim and Pam forever.

  68. L says...

Maybe it’s cheesy, but Allie and Noah on The Notebook! So charismatic, even when they’re fighting. Also the chemistry with June & Nick on Handmaid’s Tale. Missandei & Greyworm on GoT. Lizzie & Darcy on the Kiera Knightley version of Pride & Prejudice. Claire & Jamie on Outlander.

I saw Abbi Jacobson out some weeks ago and felt so starstruck. I didn’t go up to her, but felt bad just ogling from a distance. Then I remembered how forward her and Ilana’s characters are at fangirling over Hillary Clinton & Lil Wayne, so didn’t feel so bad after that.

    • Christine says...

YES – June and Nick. I did NOT want to be team Nick, but man it was hard not to adore him with her.

  69. SKM says...

Meryl Streep and Robert Redford in Out of Africa. The hair washing scene!

  70. Jodie says...

Monica Wright (Sanaa Lathan) and Quincy McCall (Omar Epps) in one of my favorite movies ever, Love and Basketball…off the charts chemistry. Kiera Knightly and James McAvoy in Atonement…sigh.

    • H says...

      LOVE.AND.BASKETBALL. YESSSSSSS

    • caro says...

Love and Basketball yessss! They had fantastic chemistry. And Kirsten Dunst and Jay Hernandez in Crazy/Beautiful, another movie from my young adult years that killed me. So good must rewatch

  71. Maaike says...

How did Silver Linings Playbook not make it into this list? The chemistry between Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper is amazing!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      You’re right!!

    • Kristin says...

I’m thinking I need to see all of Bradley Cooper’s movies to see who he DOESN’T have chemistry with.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

hahah it all comes from his smoldering eyes!!!

    • Brooke says...

Haha, that’s so funny, before I even read this, I wanted to add that Alias incredible cookie-dough- ice cream kiss scene between him and Jennifer Garner. Oh man, Bradley Cooper has been smoldering for a long time! Jennifer Garner as Sydney too ;)

  72. Simone says...

Um, come on guys… LESLIE KNOPE AND BEN WYATT!

    • Brooke says...

“I like you and I love you!” !!
I love that they have hilarious honest differences and sharpen and tease each other. They feel like a real loving hilarious couple.

  73. Kate says...

I was scrolling through this list thinking “please say Fleabag. Please say Fleabag” and there they were. I can’t remember a duo with more raw, electric chemistry.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      AGREED.

    • kk says...

Was hoping it was on the list too!

  74. Deana says...

Fun post. This is an old one: Dennis Quaid and Ellen Barkin in “The Big Easy.”

    • Cece says...

I remember watching that as a teen and wondering if I’d ever have chemistry that intense with someone!

    • jen says...

      Oh YEAH. amazing chemistry.

  75. Joaquina says...

    Yaaaas to Broad City chemistry!

I particularly love Catastrophe’s Rob and Sharon because their chemistry appears intellectual and humor based then secondarily sexual. It is kinda refreshing.

My addition would be The Office’s Pam and Jim….smoldering chemistry kept under wraps while working and Pam engaged to another.

And as a huge Insecure fan, I love to see Issa on here. She and Daniel had that sorta awkward, squirmy, deep-seated energy that was fun to watch.
What a fun post, a nice distraction from gloom and doom news.

  76. Kristin says...

Michelle Williams and Heath Ledger in Brokeback Mountain. I know the chemistry was supposed to be between Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal, but man, watch that scene where Heath and Michelle first get together in bed and it is just pure smoldering chemistry. I believe this is the movie where they met and got together in real life, and it seems very obvious in that scene that they were in love.

  77. Jessica Melindy says...

Eve and Villianelle in Killing Eve!! This show is super sexy and I won’t say anything else because you must watch it.

    • Emily says...

      YES!

  78. samantha says...

The Before Sunrise trilogy is spectacular. When Julie Delpy sings to Ethan Hawke in Before Sunset my whole heart explodes every time.

I would add another non romantic coupling from the french film The Intouchables. Omar Sy and François Cluzet have remarkable on screen chemistry.

    • K says...

That Nina Simone scene! It gives me chills.

    • Rebecca says...

Agreed. Especially the last lines when she says, “Baby, you’re going to miss that plane.” And he says, “I know.” It’s just everything.

  79. Laura C. says...

Derek Morgan and Penelope Garcia. Oh, those two.

    • Meredith says...

      “Baby girl”—love them.

  80. kayla says...

if you haven’t watched I’m Sorry, you’re missing out. andrea savage is hilarious and her chemistry with her on-screen husband tom everett scott is so good!

    • Abbie says...

      YES!!!!!! LOVE them!

    • Emily says...

Yes, sometimes I forget they aren’t together in “real life!”

  81. Maria says...

absolutely, Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle in Pride and Prejudice! The smouldering…. the teasing…. ah! They actually became a couple in real life during filming.
Also, Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson in Much Ado about Nothing. Also a real couple, and incredibly funny

    • P says...

THEY DID??? This is news to me!!??

le sigh: Colin Firth is my forever love b/c of P&P!

  82. Amy says...

Ohh but how can we ever forget Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams in the Notebook?!?!

  83. Em says...

YES to all of these, but especially to Armie and Timothee. Never has the chemistry between two people in film impacted me to this magnitude. It was at once profoundly beautiful, unfair, juicy, tortuous… impossible to stop watching. Anybody who has not yet seen this film needs to remedy the issue at once, you will not regret it.

    • L says...

one of the rare movies i went to rewatch by myself when it was in theatres. and i cried every time.

    • totally agree, such a breath-taking movie.

    • kk says...

Totally agree. Never been so impacted by chemistry onscreen or turned on by it! The scene in the bedroom after the door shuts so loudly. So lusty.

  84. Nina says...

Best I’ve seen has to be Warren Beatty and Diane Keaton in ‘Reds’ – they were a real-life couple at the time, plus it’s a true story!

  85. Liz says...

Grey’s Anatomy Meredith and Derek had SUCH chemistry and I would always remark on how they seemed like a real couple.

  86. ANDREA says...

Omar and Johnny in My Beautiful Laundrette. A really overlooked Daniel Day-Lewis film.

  87. Meg says...

David and Patrick in Schitt’s Creek!

    • Jessica says...

      YES.

    • samantha says...

omg yes!!! currently tv’s best couple hands down!

    • Erin says...

Totally agree! I squealed when Patrick sang to David.

  88. merideth and derrick on grey’s anatomy, hands DOWN.

  89. Cooper says...

Such a great list! It’s been years since I watched, but the connection between Jennifer Garner and Michael Vartan’s character (Agent Vaughn!) on Alias, Season One, defined chemistry for me! I think the fact that the characters weren’t really allowed to touch or talk directly just added to the sexiness.

    • Pam says...

Yes! I thought of Sydney and Vaughn too.

    • Tammy Sutherland says...

      Yep. For sure!

    • Julee says...

She left her husband IRL for Vaughn… they died had chemistry.

  90. Ali says...

Claire and Jamie Fraser!!!!!! Outlander forever!

    • Gabrielle says...

      Hands down the best EVER.

    • Erica says...

I just started watching Outlander and YES YES YES. Their chemistry is just….whoa

    • Leah says...

Thank you! My favorite couple right now.

  91. Andrea says...

Keira Knightly and James McAvoy in Atonement!

    • Rachel L says...

I was searching for this one in the comments Andrea – so absolutely beautiful and sexual all at once. Proper first passion. His hand hovering over the water in the fountain at the spot where she emerged…the letter writing scene…all that tension in the heat of the day…and then the library. Twining fingers under the dining table, the little speck of blood on her lip….divine!

  92. Hali says...

Remember the movie Once? The chemistry between Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova is so vulnerable and humble that my heart soars and breaks at the same time while watching it. The songs they sing together are actually their own originals- it’s intense. I’m pretty sure they fell in love while filming. Such a golden sleeper of a film.

    • Amanda says...

I LOVE THIS MOVIE. And how their love blooms from friendship to something maybe more to just…the end of the movie. So real and the music is so beautiful! Now I’ll be listening to the soundtrack on my commute home, thank you for the reminder that this movie exists.

    • Caitlyn says...

Ohhhh good one! Their chemistry was so so real.

    • Jess says...

This movie hurts and moves my heart so much. Incredible.

    • Faith says...

Yes! The soundtrack alone was heartbreaking.

  93. The very first couple that popped in my mind when I read this was Rory and Jess from Gilmore Girls! I know that most GG fans agree that he was NOT a good boyfriend … but man were those makeouts intense for my teenage heart! <3

    • J says...

I totally agree!! Was scrolling through to see if anyone would mention them.

  94. Michelle says...

Far From the Madding Crowd! Carey Mulligan and Matthias Schoenaerts were wonderful together.

    • Amanda says...

Wow, everyone is bringing up movies I forgot I loved here. When they finally kiss I cheered from my couch!

    • Rikki says...

Ugh, YES. My favorite movie. Their relationship is so so good.

    • Andrea says...

Yes!! And Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen in P&P. What is it about kissing in a field at the end of a movie? Wrecks me every time.

    • Liz says...

      BIG YES

  95. Elisabeth says...

Fleabag. HOLY HOTNESS YES. One of the only recent shows to wake up my currently-sleepy mom libido.

Also, while we’re on the Andrew Scott train, I will argue that Sherlock and Moriarty (the Cumberbatch/Scott iteration) also had VERY HOT antihero/villain chemistry.

    • Andrea says...

omg, Andrew Scott. Whatever/whoever that man does, I can’t take my eyes off him.

  96. rachel st. pierre says...

    Rory and Jess. Gilmore Girls.

    Killed me

  97. Liz says...

YES ABBI AND ILANA ONE THOUSAND TIMES YES

  98. Faith says...

Yes, I can completely relate to this. Right now we are HOOKED to Queen of the South from USA Network or Netflix. In the show, the two main characters Teresa (Alice Braga) and James (Peter Gadiot) have this cold-shoulder but insanely fiery connection that you are just dying to watch. We are on season two right now out of four and I can’t wait to see what happens between these two.

  99. Lorraine says...

Lorelei & Christopher in Gilmore Girls. I know, this is a very unpopular opinion – Luke is all heart – but I love the zip zing chemistry that Lorelei & Christopher share, and their decades-long ambiguous relationship.

    • Joy says...

      AGREED.

    • J says...

      Yes! Love those two ?

    • Elisabeth says...

Team Christopher! Also Team Mr. Medina. Lorelei deserves better than Luke, IMHO

    • Lorraine says...

So happy to know I’m not the only one in this camp! As much as I love Luke, I just don’t see a spark there.

  100. Anne says...

I love this post so much. Spot on list!

The couple I love to watch over and over again is Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen in the 2005 Pride and Prejudice. The way he stretches out his hand after helping her into the carriage . . . so restrained, and yet the connection is palpable.

  101. TSA says...

Season 1 of Outlander! Jamie and Claire. (And now I want to rewatch season 1 again.)

Also, of course, season 1 of Tommy and Grace in Peaky Blinders! I literally cried when they first got it together.

And I also die for Kirsten Dunst and Jamie Dornan’s brief affair in Marie Antoinette.

  102. Kate says...

The Julie Delpy-Ethan Hawke relationship in Before Sunrise is so, so, so good, but [unpopular opinion!] by Before Midnight, I was really tired of them…they’re both kinda whiny.

Hands-down Chiron and Kevin in Moonlight. Their relationship is a display of every kind of tenderness and masculinity at every stage, and it’s completely beautiful.

    • Colleen S says...

No, you’re not wrong. Before Midnight was supposed to be a realistic look of marriage (at least my parents’), and because of the circumstances in which Celine and Jesse got together at the end of Before Sunset, there’s a lot of emotions behind their marriage.

    • Jill says...

I agree! Their fight was so real and intimate to me. I’ve had that intense fight with my husband.

And THIS scene where the woman talks about her late husband gets me every time: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fy5pvE1rMR0

      “He appears and he
disappears like a sunrise or sunset,
      anything so ephemeral. Just like
our life – we appear and we disappear
and we are so important to some,
but, we are just passing through.”

  103. Um, speaking of chemistry, can we talk about the sparks flying between EVERYONE in the new Little Women trailer?! I could not handle it!

Also, I’m watching season three of GLOW right now and I feel like the slow burn chemistry between Sam and Ruth has been amazing.

    • J says...

ah yes! Pretty sure Saoirse and Timothee will kill me in that *sob*

    • Mims says...

By the end of Glow, I was more interested in the friend chemistry between Debbie and Ruth!

  104. Abby says...

Villanelle and Eve on Killing Eve! Jodie Comer & Sandra Oh are electric.

    • Samantha says...

      OMG YES

    • Ansley Clark says...

Yes! I third Eve and Villanelle! The sexiest. <3

  105. Sonja says...

    Jim & Pam!

  106. Liz Bowman says...

Mads Mikkelsen and High Dancy (Claire Danes’ husband!) In the TV show Hannibal had amazing semi creepy chemistry (I mean he was a cannibal ?).

    • Liz Bowman says...

      Typo! Hugh not High lol!

  107. Kelly Griffith says...

I love Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal in When Harry Met Sally. I also loved the chemistry between Julia Roberts and Richard Gere in their movies. I cannot handle Fleabag and the Hot Priest though. Off. The. Charts. Chemistry.

  108. Amy says...

I have watched that kiss between Jess and Nick more than a couple times on youtube afterward ;) When it happened it was nearly shocking because it seemed like they were going to keep that “will they/won’t they” feeling going indefinitely and then bam!

    • Cooper says...

Haha, same! Definitely watched that scene a million times

  109. Zoe P. says...

SHOCKED that you failed to include Tommy and Grace in that first season of Peaky Blinders, Joanna! Has any culmination and release of sexual tension ever been so satisfying? (Fleabag + Hot Priest might be a close second)

    • Joanna Goddard says...

Oh my gosh how did I forget??

    • Catherine says...

Yep, I was looking to see if anyone mentioned Tommy and Grace. “You’ve seen me.”

For platonic friendships, Taystee and Poussey from Orange is the New Black. Breaks my heart just thinking about it.

  110. Melody says...

UGH, why do you break my heart again!
IT’LL PASS. No, it’ll never pass.
UGH Flea Bag 2 was BEYOND

    • Kari says...

      100% Melody – it’ll never pass!!

    • Kendall says...

Truth. My own hot priest (not really a priest but a doomed relationship) was nearly 20 years ago. It never passed. For either of us. I’m very happy now with my husband and my children, but that wound never healed. Never will.

  111. Kel says...

Outlander’s Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe as Jamie and Claire have amazing on screen chemistry. The Outlander books are one of my all-time favorite series and I am pretty particular as to how my favorite books play out on screen. Sam and Caitriona pull it off beautifully.

    • Anna says...

Yes, yes! And their offscreen (but still on duty) chemistry is almost better than in the show- on the red carpet they are always hugging and smiling at each other (not a lot of smiling the the 18th century). So. Hot.

  112. mel says...

So glad friendship chemistry came up. Is anyone as excited as I am for Aminatou Sow and Ann Friedman’s upcoming book on female friendships??

  113. Casey says...

Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet in Eternal Sunshine. Forever. Just one word…… “Okay”.

  114. Scrolling through this I was just waiting for Fleabag. You did not disappoint! ;)

  115. ashley says...

    Don’t forget the classics!
    Julia Roberts and Richard Gere
    Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks

  116. Jay says...

Love Ethan and Julie — definitely a beloved on-screen duo. I’d also add: Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, SJP and Chris Noth, and Steve Martin and Diane Keaton. Maybe Peter Krause and Monica Potter, too? Their Parenthood coupling felt amazingly realistic.

    • Jil says...

Yeah! It’s been a long time scrolling for Sarah and Chris!

    • Maggie says...

Yes! Can’t believe Carrie and Big have not been mentioned more frequently!

  117. Katie says...

Taron Egerton and Jamie Bell in Rocketman, such great friend chemistry.

  118. Estee says...

Paul Reiser and Helen Hunt in Mad About You! As a kid I was convinced they had to be married in real life.

    • Caitlyn says...

I actually thought the same thing. Good suggestion – their chemistry really was fire!

    • Mouse says...

      Yes; amazing acting.

  119. Quinn says...

Completely agree with all of these! Would also add Claire (Catriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) in Outlander.

  120. Kash says...

Noah Centineo and Lana Condor in To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before–the chemistry was so natural and sweet. I absoLUTEly believed these two characters wanted to date

    • Sonia says...

Every one is saying Jim and Pam, and I get it, they’re great together. But what about Tim and Dawn from the original The Office? They were so good, especially in the Christmas Special.

  121. Erin says...

I agree with all of these!
I would definitely add David and Patrick on Schitt’s Creek. Their chemistry is so good and endearing and their relationship has become one of my all-time favorite tv romances. I haven’t met one person who has watched it and not fallen in love with David and Patrick.

PS- for those put off by the name of the show (like I initially was), it’s such a hilarious but also big hearted show with a wonderful cast. Give it a few episodes- it really starts to find its stride in the second half of the first season and then really takes off in the second season.

  122. Eliza says...

Having just binged all five seasons of Jane the Virgin on the recommendation of my super-cool niece, I’d like to nominate Gina Rodriguez (Jane) and Justin Baldoni (Raphael) in this category! Totally sweet and sexy! (Sorry, I’m not Team Michael…)

    • L says...

i was ugly crying throughout the last 2 episodes of jane :,(

    • Andrea Orzoff says...

came here to say exactly this! Loved Michael as a character, but Jane/Michael never had the same energy as Jane and Rafael do.

    • Adrienne says...

      100% agree!!

  123. Lisa says...

Well sweetie darling if we’re doing friend chemistry we’ve GOT to talk about Patsy and Edina in Absolutely Fabulous.

  124. Margaret Craig says...

Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan as Claire and Jamie in Outlander!

    • Elizabeth says...

Hard agree! I resisted watching the show for a long time because the concept seemed a bit silly, but the chemistry between Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan sucked me in after watching one episode.

  125. Jean says...

Claire and Jaime in Outlander. The show is silly at times, yes, but their chemistry is the most amazing.

  126. Elizabeth Mulholland says...

Tammy and Coach Taylor?? That seems to be a shocking omission.

    • NK says...

      YES!

    • Christina says...

      Yes, yes, yes!!!

    • Hayley says...

      Of course.

    • Sara M says...

YES! Theirs is like a DREAM marriage to me! And whenever I am not sure how to handle a sticky situation, I ask myself “what would Tammy Taylor do?” WWTTD.

    • omg YES.

  127. Steph says...

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie in Mr. and Mrs. Smith – you just knew there was something real going down! I had the Lay Lady Lay song from that soundtrack on my “sexy playlist” for quiiiiiiite a while.

  128. Jaclyn says...

Jennifer Lopez and George Clooney in the movie “Out of Sight,” hands down some of the best on-screen chemistry ever

    • Margot says...

      Yes!!! So good, so hot!

    • Gail says...

I will second that! Great movie and that scene where they are in the hotel bar was off the charts!

    • Tina, NYC. says...

Yes to my husband George’s chemistry with JLo in the fantastic film, Out of Sight.

Also need to add Salma hayek and Antonio Banderas In Desperado, a forgotten but excellent movie from the mid 1990s.

    • Tricia says...

Yes! I scrolled through all of these comments to make sure this was mentioned!

    • Cerises says...

I just went through 327 comments to verify if someone had mentionned them. They were the first one I thought of: a seemingly odd pairing on paper but sizzling on screen.
Plus that movie had maybe the best ending ever: I was wondering through the first viewing how this was going to unravel and that last dialog was absolutely perfect!!!

  129. Sam C. says...

I’m currently watching Madam Secretary on Netflix (a real West Wing kind of vibe) and the chemistry between Téa Leoni and Tim Daly as a couple who has been married and madly in love for over 20 years is a joy to watch! It helps that they’re dating IRL … their banter, on-screen cuddles, deep affection and respect for one another is truly uplifting and inspiring!

Also… watching all of the Toy Story movies on repeat with my littles: Buzz and Woody’s friend chemistry is one of my all time fav’s!

    • Sara B says...

THEY ARE?! I love that a) they have been married for a long time on the show rather than new love and b) how they handle disagreements with each other and their kids. It feels like a real life marriage.

  130. kiki says...

SO, i know it’s not good TV, but Elena and Damon in The Vampire Diaries. OMG their chemistry was off the charts! Poor Stephan.

    • Rachel says...

Agreed I loved their chemistry as well. You don’t have to qualify it’s not good TV! Good TV is whatever you want it to be :)

  131. Mary Kate says...

such an amazing idea for a post! YES, FLEABAG, DEAR LORD. also, Love and Basketball always and forever!!!

    • Mary Kate says...

also, YES, the build-up to their first kiss in Call Me By Your Name was UNREAL. I meant to say that right away, but got distracted by memories of the Hot Priest.

  132. Kimberly McCabe says...

    Vicky Christina Barcelona!

    • Jil says...

      Vicky Christina Barcelona!!!

  133. Robyn says...

YES to Nick & Jess. I can’t tell you how many times I have watched that first kiss on YouTube, especially during… um… dry spells of my own. Electric.

I’d vote for Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling in The Notebook.

  134. Jona says...

I’m a sucker for British mysteries which favor slow burn romances (my favorite kind) so Amanda and Sidney in Grantchester and Morse and Joan in Endeavour are my current faves. Also all the pairings in Mike Schur shows are goals i.e. Leslie and Ben, Jake and Amy, Eleanor and Chidi.

  135. S says...

Schists Creek, David and Patrick! The most emotionally involved I’ve been in a relationship that I’m not a part of!

    • S says...

*schitts creek, wonderfully so many here agree!

    • Jenna says...

I came here to vote for them too!! I love love love everything about their relationship.

  136. Liz says...

Meredith Grey & Derek Shepherd, especially during season 2 of “Grey’s Anatomy”. Will never forget the “Pick me, choose me, love me” speech that Meredith delivers in the OR. I have goosebumps just thinking about that scene.

    • L says...

i’ve heard that speech compared to the one Julia Roberts’s character does in My Best Friend’s Wedding, and how it has been reinvented many times in media! So romantic. Even though it hasn’t led to the other person choosing them? Haha

    • Omg yes ! Those 2. That scene is.so vulnerable with Julia Roberts. And he doesn’t pick her :( but they had so.much chemistry!

  137. alison says...

I GASPED OUT LOUD when Nick and Jess kissed in the hallway for the first time. Enough for my bf to run in from the other room asking “WHAT HAPPENED?!” Will love them forever and ever. But why oh why did they make that final season?! No one wanted that!

  138. Amy says...

It’s not a movie but watch the interview Ed Mylett does with Rachel Hollis. They BOTH make a disclaimer that they’re happily married. And I believe them. But I get so uncomfortable when I watch them together. They have a serious connection.

  139. Chrissie says...

    JIM AND PAM

I’ve watched the episode when they get married at least 400 times. And cry each and every time.

Like Nick from New Girl, Jim has that smoldering gaze!!

    • I cry every time, too! I cant believe I didn’t think of them right away.

  140. Colleen S says...

I would have to agree with Julie Delpy/Ethan Hawke and Timothy Chalamet/Armie Hammer. I would have to disagree about Bradley Cooper and Lady GaGa–from what I saw of TV spots for that movie, it looked uncomfortable (and yeah they are now both free from relationships, which too many people put too much focus on).

  141. Jon Bernthal and Deborah Ann Woll (Frank Castle and Karen Page) in the first season of The Punisher! I needed that relationship to happen like I need AIR. I was so sad when they pushed them apart in season 2 … I get why they did it but at the same time a modern update to Frank Castle’s image couldn’t have hurt that much could it?

  142. Catherine says...

This whole article was just an excuse to show the hot priest again, right? I’M HERE FOR IT.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      Hahahaa busted.

    • Christina says...

      I think I need to watch Fleabag…….yes?

    • Kristina says...

When I was in high school, I watched To Have and Have Not with Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall and oh my gawd, their chemistry nearly melted my face off. That whole whistle scene, I mean, dang. Lauren Bacall is a goddess.

  143. Tammy Sutherland says...

Alex and Ellen on “Family Ties.” (Real-life couple Michael J. Fox and Tracy Pollan!) The scene at the dance when “At This Moment” plays and then the scene in the train station! My preteen heart was shattered in the best possible way by the electricity. Thirty years later I still can’t hear that song without feeling a delightful ache in my chest.

    • Kristin says...

My heart was broken when Tracy left the show because they were so wonderful together, so thank goodness they are together in real life!!

  144. Sarah says...
