9 Couples With the Best On-Screen Chemistry

9 Couples With the Best On-Screen Chemistry

Are you ever watching a TV show or movie where the on-screen couple is so electric that you almost can’t handle it? Here are nine movies and TV shows where I felt that way (and I’d love to hear yours)…

before sunrise

Have you seen the Before Sunrise triology? Sultry Julie Delpy and scruffy Ethan Hawke have such a natural connection, you’re rooting for them before they even get off the train in Vienna.

call me by your name

9 Couples With the Best On-Screen Chemistry

On the first day of rehearsal for Call Me By Your Name, director Luca Guadagnino asked stars Armie Hammer and Timothée Chalamet to flip to a page in the script, which happened to be a kissing scene in the grass. “So, then we started making out. And we’re making out, and making out, and making out, and no one’s saying stop,” Hammer explained on The Ellen Show. “All of a sudden, we both kind of stop and look, and Luca had just walked away and left us right there, rolling around in the grass.” It was definitely an icebreaker, laughs Chalamet: “It destroyed the ice.”

insecure

When, on Insecure, Issa and her ex Daniel start hanging out, you can cut the tension with a knife. They speak the same language and really get each other.

fleabag

fleabag

Fleabag. Two words: IT’LL PASS.

catastrophe

No matter how much Sharon and Rob argue in Catastrophe, they still laugh at each other’s jokes. You can see why they drive each other crazy and love each other madly. One example from season 2: Sharon and Rob are fighting, and when he gets into bed, she tells him not to touch her. He responds, “If you come anywhere near me, I’m going to scream.” Facing away from him, Sharon laughs, and boom, the fight is over. (I loved all four seasons of this show.)

I watched Lion on a flight and was sobbing like a baby! Such an incredible movie, and the connection between Rooney Mara’s and Dev Patel’s characters was tender and beautiful.

9 Couples With the Best On-Screen Chemistry

New Girl is such a light sitcom that I didn’t expect Nick and Jess to have serious on-screen chemistry. But the witty repartee! Those smoldering gazes! That first kiss in the hallway! Even the actors had to be held back. Says Jake Johnson, who played Nick: “Liz [Meriwether, the creator] has told us a lot of times in scenes, ‘Jake, don’t put your hand there. It’s too forward.’ They keep pushing us apart.”

9 Couples With the Best On-Screen Chemistry

The thing that really got me about A Star Is Born is how close-up the shots were. During intense scenes, the camera was almost in their faces, and it made the chemistry feel extra fiery.

Finally, although it’s not really sexual, the friend chemistry in Broad City was off the charts. Abbi and Ilana had a funny yet profound connection. “Here’s the truth: Friendships between women are often the deepest and most profound love stories, but they are often discussed as if they are ancillary, ‘bonus’ relationships to the truly important ones. Women’s friendships outlast jobs, parents, husbands, boyfriends, lovers, and sometimes children,” wrote Emily Rapp. Two other amazing friendships: Leslie and Ann in Parks and Rec and Maya and Anna in Pen15.

What would you add? The couple in the new movie Plus One had a great vibe, and I loved the kiss in A Room With A View. Please weigh in below, these are the important questions!

P.S. My forever celebrity crushes, and what are your top three movies of all time?

  1. Jennifer O. says...

Kyle Chandler + Connie Britton on Friday Night Lights! Really, there was a lot of chemistry on that show.

  2. Courtney says...

Bill and Sookie …. True Blood- Best/most ridiculous show of all time :)

  3. Lara says...

Claire (caitriona balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) in Outlander. Phew!

  4. Nora says...

Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling in both Crazy, Stupid Love and La La Land!!!

  5. Ulla says...

Ned and Chuck on Pushing Daisies. OH THE LACK OF TOUCHING!

  6. Nina says...

Love this! Agree with Before sunrise, and others i think of:
    • Richard Gere and Debra Winger in An officer and a gentleman
    • Meg Ryan and Russel Crowe in Proof of life
    • Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep in The Bridges of Madison County
    • Scarlett Johansson and Jonathan Rhys Meyers in Match point

  7. Meg says...

Your comment on strong female friendships reminded me of the movie ‘I Love You Man’ and how Paul Rudd has a great relationship with Rashida Jones but they always keep her relationships with her girlfriends as an equally valued thing.

Also Meg Ryan & Tom Hanks anddddd for anyone who has binged it, Claire and Jamie from Outlander, I don’t think it would have gotten a second season without their chemistry.

  8. Lauren B says...

Gah, Fleabag just slayed me. I re-watched the last few minutes of the last episode multiple times.
What about Josh and his assistant Donna on The West Wing? Love their playful work banter and you can always tell Josh loves her but just doesn’t realize yet. I think the almost 7 season build up to them finally getting together was one of tv’s finest ;)

  9. Callie says...

Full support for Before Sunset! It’s so good.

Surprised Joanna didn’t say Tommy and Grace from Peaky Blinders–yowza! Definitely rewatched those first season episodes.

    • Lisa says...

      YES to Tommy and Grace!

  10. Dian Kilborn says...

I would add characters Brian and Justin from tv series Queer As Folk (2000 to 2005) played by Gale Harold and Randy Harrison.

  11. Laura says...

Winona (Jo) and Christian (Laurie) in Little Women, 1994

    • Isabelle says...

      Yes, yes, yes!!

    • K2 says...

Yaaaaaaas. Have you seen there’s a new Little Women coming out this winter? I can’t wait!

  12. Whitney says...

I read through all these comments and CANNOT believe no one has mentioned The Marvelous Mrs Maisel!!!!! Midge Maisel’s chemistry with Benjamin!!!! Their witty banter and the way they look at eachother…it knocks your socks off. I’m devastated thinking that he might not be coming back for season 3 :( She also has amazing chemistry with her ex, Joel. Basically she’s just an amazing actress.

  13. Maria says...

I may be dating myself, but I can’t believe nobody has mentioned “Lost in Translation” and the seemingly-platonic relationship between Scarlett Johansson and Bill Murray (very large age difference as well!). That scene in the end where they whisper goodbye to each other and you don’t ever know what they actually said?!? Be still my breaking heart.

    • Katie says...

I think about them in this movie all the time!

  14. AMK says...

    Issa and Molly!

  15. Jodi says...

Shawn and Angela, Boy Meets World

    • Reagan says...

Rose (Kate Winslet) and the Door. When she chooses the Door over Jack’s life I cried my eyes out. (Titanic 1998)

  16. Camille says...

Jim and Pam on The Office. <3

    • Melissa Richie says...

      YES!!!!

    • Amanda says...

I second this! Seriously love how they were best friends

    • MJ says...

YESSS, but only before they got together. Haha! Tension ruined once the thing became a thing.

  17. Cindy B says...

The last scene in the movie Green Card

  18. Jennifer says...

Oh, I concur! Loved that movie, weren’t they just electric?! The blouse man:)

  19. This might be a little obscure/out-dated, but Gus and Sean on Psyche have seriously some of the best friend chemistry I’ve ever watched. Their banter is literally everything.

    • Amanda says...

      They are the best!!

  20. Samara says...

Ummmm, Suranne Jones and Sophie Rundle, Gentleman Jack🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🌟🌟💛❤️💜🥰😍😍💕💓❣️

    • Katie says...

      YUP. Waiting on season 2!!!

  21. Sarah B says...

    Some great ones here!
How about Felicity & Ben?? :)

  22. justine says...

Catastrophe is so good! Probably the most realistic portrayal of married life, I’ve seen (or my married life, anyway). Hilarious, also!

    • elle parkour says...

I was hoping that Rob and Sharon (Catastrophe) made the list. I legit thought they were married in real life when I started watching. Even googled to confirm! lol

  23. Kriww says...

oMG I cant believe nobody mentioned Ron and Hermione, they are my fav couple!!

    Other chemistry I love:
    Castle and Beckett in Castle
Lorelai and Luke in GG but as best friends only before they got together. iMO the chemistry kinda lost after they became a couple.
And, mother daughter chemistry between Lorelai and Rory, Lorelai and Emily
Frenemy chemistry between Rory and Paris (are you seeing pattern here?)
Among all her lovers, my fave of Rory is her fling Tristan. Because, chad michael murray :)
Friends chemistry in How I met your mother between all 5 of them
And, Ted Mosby-Tracy ofkors… I still hate the Robin ending until now :(
Friends chemistry between Jane and Maura in Rizolli and Isles
Bromance between Martin Riggs and Rog Murtaugh in Lethal Weapon series (so so real and believable I was so shocked to learn that they actually had a fight IRL)
Siblings chemistry in Fresh Off The Boats
Ben and Alice in The Catch
Its kinda weird but I love Derek and Garcia from Criminal Minds even tho they’re not a couple
and last but not least, I really love emma stone and ryan gosling in La La Land

  24. Benedicte says...

Loved all of these too! Many unknown to me.
Daniel Craig and Eva Green in Casino Royal
Demi Moore and Woody Harrelson in Indecent Proposal (or Demi Moore and Robert Redford??)

    • Deirdre says...

I still remember the electrical charge between William Hurt & Marlee Matlin in “Children of a Lesser God.” And Many Patinkin and Berbedette Peters in “Sunday in the Park with George.” But maybe I was just young and impressionable.
Love the chemistry between the leads in the Americans and Catastrophe. Also when Lorelei sings “I will always love you” and Luke walks in…

  25. Kirstin says...

Kate and Anne in Workin’ Moms — their friendship is raw, real, and hilarious!

  26. Ali says...

I was about to weigh in with A Room with A View when I saw the last paragraph. Electric! Also Colin Firth and Lucia Moniz in Love Actually – corny but oh so heart stopping, especially when they are sneaking looks at each other in the car.

  27. Tamara says...

100% agree. BETTER THAN ALL THE REST!

  28. Cerises says...

Most of my favourite ones have already been mentionned
I will just add Benedict Cumberbatch and Lara Pulver in the “Scandal in Belgravia” episode of Sherlock: they were the perfect match and had an intense connection.
Speaking of which the bromance between Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman is also one of the best.
Most of these examples are “positive” ones except the one mentionned about Hannibal. And likewise speaking of chemistry I could not help thinking of the one between Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins in Silence of the lambs: the intensity between them “made” the movie and the scene when they brush fingers was both powerful and disturbing by the built up tension of their relationship.
    Chemistry can go many ways…

  29. Alice says...

SO many. SO SO MANY!! But the ones that are jumping to mind right now are Cristina and Owen in Grey’s Anatomy- it’s just SO good.

And also- because clearly I’m on a Sandra Oh kick- Eve and Villanelle in Killing Eve!! Not so much romantic chemistry, but the scenes with them both in are electric!

  30. Ines says...

    Bones and Booth FTW! :)

  31. Kristine says...

Kristen Bell and Jason Dohring on Veronica Mars. So much rooting for them over the years.

    • Ulla says...

Yesss! LoVe forever. They’re SO HOT together, yikes!

  32. Mimi says...

Tommy Shelby and Grace from Peaky Blinders—swoon…

  33. Kenzie Randall says...

THAT NEW GIRL KISS! I watch that episode over and over because it’s just best. Ugh I love them!

  34. Annie says...

Has anyone mentioned Carter and Abby on ER??

    • NK says...

      Omg yes…omg!!!

  35. alison says...

Sydney Bristow and Vaughn from Alias. I almost died when they first kissed.

    • Amanda says...

      YES! such a good one

  36. Ann says...

Diane Lane and Viggo Mortensen, A Walk On The Moon, 1999. Watch an old trailer… you’ll understand!

Fun to see all of the other thoughts:)

  37. Ristra says...

maybe I’m just a fan of oldies but Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck in “Roman Holiday” and of course, Julie Christie and Omar Sharif in Dr. Zhivago!

    • Carrie says...

Love!!!!! Can’t agree more, and so bittersweet.

  38. Lauren says...

Oh my god, Alec Baldwin and Melanie Griffith, in that scene from Working Girl, dancing to Lady in Red! And Jude Law and Nicole Kidman in Cold Mountain, so good.

    • MJ says...

Different take on Alec Baldwin… him and Tina Fey in 30 Rock! ha! nonsexual amazing friend/boss/weirdo chemistry

  39. Martini says...

    Barack and Michele Obama, lawd.
It counts, it was always on tv. Anytime they were together.
But my fav was their 1st Inaugurall Ball, in a freight elevator. In her beautiful white ball gown, Michele had become chilly so “he” took his coat off and placed it around her shoulders, as they leaned in close to rest their foreheads together. The other five men on the same elevator with them all looked at their shoes, the walls, the ceiling, anything to give them just a small bit of cherished privacy.

    • AMK says...

      Awwww yes!!!!

    • Y says...

      Love!

  40. I came here to say… Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer on Killing EVE!!! <3 <3 Notably also created by Phoebe Waller-Bridge for those obsessed with hot priest ;)

  41. Kim says...

Darius and Nina in Love Jones were the whole reason I moved to Chicago after college. Am I the only one who lived through the Black rom-com boom of the early naughts?

  42. SM says...

Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan HAVE to make this list, right? I mean, When Harry Met Sally is a classic.

    • Carolyn says...

      Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks!!

  43. Nick and Jess + Fleabag and the Hot Priest = <3

Mindy and Danny's first kiss in the mindy project is also pretty hot.

    • Jen Ruth says...

So much love for this post and all of these “couples.”

  44. bianca says...

Dro and Molly from Insecure– I know it didn’t work out but when they were on… my goodness! *fans self

  45. Heather says...

David and Patrick on Schitt’s Creek. SIMPLY. THE. BEST.

    • Kenzie Randall says...

YESSSSSS. I watched all 5 seasons this summer 😂

    • Amy says...

      YES!!!!!!!!

  46. HH says...

Richard Armitage and Daniela Denby-Ashe in “North and South.” (The BBC series based on the book by Elizabeth Gaskell, NOT the Civil War drama.) That kiss on the train! I cannot admit how many times I rewatched!

(Totally recommended for any Pride & Prejudice fans.)

Likewise, the chemistry between Dorcas Lane (Lark Rise to Candleford’s postmistress) and just about any of her suitors, particularly Sir Timothy.

    • Rachel Elizabeth says...

YES! I adore “North and South” with Richard Armitage and Daniela Denby-Ashe!

    • June says...

Oh my goodness, I have also watched North and South an unconscionable number of times because I just LOVE the chemistry between Richard Armitage and Daniela Denby-Ashe. Their first kiss – swoon! The music in that miniseries is also beautiful.

    • Carrie says...

      Agreed. Intense!

    • Cait says...

      Two of my favorites!!

  47. JC says...

When Harry Met Sally, Outlander, and The Mindy Project couples!

  48. Mary says...

Oh my gosh–Jenna Coleman and Tom Hughes in Victoria.
    SWOOON.

    • Sarah says...

YES! That was the first couple that came to my mind when I read the title of this post. Their chemistry is INSANE and adds so much to the series.

    • Cait says...

      YES. Holy cow.

  49. Yulia says...

    A few!

    Period pieces:
Jane Eyre (Mia Wasikowski & Michael Fassbender)
Far from the Madding Crowd (Carey Mulligan & Matthias Schoenaerts)
Out of Africa (Meryl Streep & Robert Redford)
Pride & Prejudice (Kiera Knightley & Matthew Macfadyen)

    Young lives:
Ibiza: Love Drunk (Gillian Jacobs & Richard Madden)
Tonight You’re Mine (Natalia Tena & Luke Tredaway)
To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before (Lana Condor & Noah Centineo)

    Romantic comedies:
You’ve Got Mail (Meg Ryan & Tom Hanks)
Notting Hill (Julia Roberts & Hugh Grant)
The Big Sick (Zoe Kazan & Kumail Nanjiani)

    Sweeping dramas:
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (all the couples!)
The Bridges of Madison County (Meryl Streep & Clint Eastwood)

    TV:
True Blood (Anna Paquin & Stephen Moyer)

    • Sarah says...

Oh my goodness, all the period piece couples you listed are so on point. I think Matthias Schoenaerts is one of those actors that can create incredible chemistry with whoever his scene partner is. Have you seen him in “Rust & Bone” with Marion Cotillard? Another terrific screen chemistry.

  50. hanna says...

Romy Schneider and Alain Delon in The Swimming Pool! The opening scene is one of the hottest ones ever filmed!

  51. Sally Nicholson says...

Claire and Jamie from Outlander. :)

    • Carly says...

Was coming here to say that! So in love

  52. Carrie says...

Pacey and Joey from Dawson’s Creek OF COURSE YOU GUYS.

    • Kat says...

Yasss! Thanks for reminding me of these two!

And my recent fave, besides CMBYN: Isak and Even from the Norwegian Web-Series Skam, Seasons 3 and 4. The actors were super young, and gosh, they set the screen on fire and made hearts melt without effort. The softest, the deepest, the hottest. Watch it for free on dailymotion, with English subtitles).

P.S.: I’m also team Jesse and Céline of the Before trilogy. Plus, the women in „Carol“, although I can‘t even remember the characters‘ names now (it was Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara), but the chemistry was off the charts.

    • Kat says...

I wish I‘d tapped „notify me of follow-up comments“ because I wish I knew if there are any other Skam fans here;)!

    • Vale says...

Have you guys seen The Bodyguard? (Not the Whitney Houston – Kevin Costner movie)
But the English TV series… it’s pretty damn hot and all because of the chemistry. Im open to the idea that it could be a ‘bodyguard Thing’ – dunno, but willing to test the theory. Can’t wait for Season Two!!

    • Rebecca says...

Thank you! Knew it wasn’t just me. One of the best tv couples ever.

  53. Gail says...

Joanna, I’m only a little disappointed that you didn’t include Mindy and Danny in your list! (And that’s, as a long-time follower of CoJ, I know you went through your own Danny Castellano phase ;) )

Others I would add to this awesome list:
    — Keanu Reeves and Sandy Bullock in Speed (and The Lakehouse…they’re just great together)
    — Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams in The Notebook
    — Beth and Randall on This Is Us
    — Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys on The Americans (so good they got together IRL!)

  54. Cait says...

The BBC miniseries North & South, has amazing chemistry. I mean, Richard Armitage? Yes please!

I also LOVE Moonstruck. Cher and Nicholas Cage. It just works.

    • Yulia says...

      Totally agree about Moonstruck!

    • HH says...

Ha, I just said the same thing. I should have read your comment first, Cait.

  55. Donna says...

YES! I’m in the middle of a rewatch and those two are the best. I know people are more into Rory and Jess, but Jess is so awful that I can’t get past that.

  56. S says...

Ummm Maggie Cheung and Tony Leung in In the Mood for Love. Smoldering is an understatement.

    • The most beautiful perfect movie that floors me every time I watch.

Hard agree with this list. The Before trilogy is timeless.

Ben & Leslie. Logan & Veronica. DAVID & PATRICK all day!

Also Keira Knightley and James MacAvoy in Atonement crushed me for weeks.

  57. Hanna says...

David Tennant and anyone he co-stars with. :-)

    • Alice says...

GOD, you’re so right. David Tennant and Billie Piper- INSANE chemistry!!

  58. Allyson says...

Those are all PERFECT. I’ve seen and loved each of these pairings. I rewatched the first kiss on New Girl so.many.times. Same with Fleabag; season 2 in particular, I’ve already watched thrice.

An oldie but a goodie; Susan Sarandon & Kevin Costner in Bull Durham. Susan Sarandon & Tim Robbins in Bull Durham, too. She is electric and they’re both foiiine.

    • Heather says...

Oh yessss. Kevin Costner’s speech. And then when Annie replies, “Crash, you do make speeches.” Love that movie. So ahead of its time, too.

  59. Lydia says...

I’ve gotten REAL caught up in anything with Matthias Schoenarts. Rust and Bone. Far from the Madding Crowd. The man basically has chemistry with air.

    • jill says...

      YES!

    • Sarah says...

Oh my gosh, AGREED! Just wrote a very similar reply to a comment above about his insane chemistry.

  60. Tori says...

Ugh I die for Mandy Moore’s and Milo Ventimiglia’s chemistry on “This Is Us.” Even when you see them do interviews together they speak of each other with such kindness and look adoringly at each other you’re like DANG!

    • Gail says...

      They are great!

  61. Nigerian Girl says...

Kit Harington and Emilia Clarke in Game of Thrones.

  62. Kaitlyn says...

Aside from Fleabag and the Hot Priest (😍), the best on-screen chemistry I’ve seen in a while is David and Patrick from Schitt’s Creek!

    • V says...

      YES to David and Patrick!

    • Betsy says...

Oh yes! Great chemistry. I love Schitt’s Creek. Even my picky boyfriend loves it as well.

    • Allyson says...

YEP. When he sings “Simply the Best.” Swoooooon

    • Lizzie says...

      100% yes.

    • Heather says...

I mean, I posted this above, but it merits saying again, because I love David and Patrick’s romance so much. It helps that so much of the love is authentic. I saw an interview about the night they filmed Patrick playing his rendition of Simply the Best, and they said that everyone on set was crying. David was so astonished with how good it was. His expression in that scene is REAL. Like, How are you this amazing? And then Patrick’s expression when David does his rendition, where he looks just totally delighted? Also really real. It was the first time he’d seen David’s dance, and he was genuinely cracking up, throwing his hands in the air. It makes me happy just thinking about it.

    • Haley says...

      Absolutely Patrick and David!!

    • Kathryn says...

Came here to also say DAVID AND PATRICK!

  63. T says...

Not sexual chemistry, but I think that Beth Behrs and Kat Dennings had the most natural friendship repertoire on ‘2 Broke Girls’. So fun to watch (rewatch).

  64. Sylvia says...

Totally agree on Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke. I developed a major crush on him based on just the way he looks at her!

    • Katie H says...

      Same!

    • Alexis says...

That scene in Before Sunset when they are in the car and he is telling her about his dream about seeing her whizzing past again and again on a train. He is looking away and she starts to reach out to touch him, then stops herself. It gets me all the time.

    • mimi says...

Yes! I need to go back and watch the first two, and also I haven’t seen the third one. I have loved the original since the first time I saw it.

  65. Ashley McKenney says...

New movie on Netflix – Newness. The lead characters have insane chemistry and it’s a really raw performance and intense movie throughout.

  66. Patrick and David on Schitt’s Creek have the BEST, SEXIEST, DREAMIEST chemistry of any couple on screen. If you’ve seen the “Simply the Best” scene then you know exactly what I mean. I melted.

    • Abby says...

Yes! This is the first comment I came to and they are exactly who popped in my head when I read the Joanna’s question at the end. I love them together SO MUCH.

    • sijia says...

um, that first scene when they meet in Patrick’s office and Patrick just keeps shooting David these fond, flirty glances across the table and his voice drops three registers. Even more incredible when you remember that technically, he has never been in a relationship with a man before, and yet David just brought out this incredible sexual vibe in him IN THEIR FIIIIRST MEETING

  67. Stephanie says...

Annette (Reese Witherspoon) and Sebastian (Ryan Philippe) in Cruel Intentions! They were already a couple at the time of filming and you can certainly tell :D

  68. Judith says...

    Donna & Harvey <3

    • Nicole says...

      Yes!

  69. Angela says...

I came here to say Diane Lane and Olivier Martinez in Unfaithful. Holy hell, read through all 400 comments and no mention here. Guess it’s just me? I can totally see why she was swept up in an affair.

Also maybe it’s my young self, but Ryan Phillipe and Reese Witherspoon in Cruel Intentions. No wonder they got married, that chemistry was sizzling!

    • I was just going to type Diane Lane and Olivier Martinez! So you have at least one agreer. (I also think Meg Ryan and Russell Crowe in that movie I can’t remember haha — their connection was clear)

    • Deana says...

I didn’t get that movie, though – she was married to Richard Gere! You cheat WITH Richard Gere, not on Richard Gere!

    • Kim says...

Ha ha I’m with Deana on this. Why would you cheat on Richard Gere?!

  70. Carlyn says...

Andy and April in Parks and Rec!!

  71. Carlyn says...

    OUTLANDER
    that is all.

    • 1000% agree!!! Best chemistry EVER.

  72. Hayley says...

LOVE this post so much, and totally agree with all of these (especially the Before Sunrise trilogy, which I’m obsessed with, and Fleabag)! I have to also add Ethan Hawke & Winona Ryder in Reality Bites, Michael Fassbender and Mia Wasikowska in Jane Eyre, and this is not a movie or show, but my God, Joy Williams and John Paul White, when they were in The Civil Wars! So palpable it makes you wanna scream.

    • Angela says...

My heart will never not be broken over the loss of the Civil Wars. Definitely “the one that got away” in not getting to see them perform together.

    • Allyson says...

The Civil Wars…ahh, I forgot how great they were. I did get to see them live and it was magic. She was so charming and fun, and he was so deadpan. Great pairing, even if it wasn’t romantic.

  73. Hayley says...

LOVE this post so much, and totally agree with all of these (especially the Before Sunrise trilogy, which I’m obsessed with, and Fleabag)! I have to also add Michael Fassbender and Mia Wasikowska in Jane Eyre, and this is not a movie or show, but my God, Joy Williams and John Paul White, when they were in The Civil Wars! So palpable it makes you wanna scream.

  74. Stefana says...

The whole family chemistry in Bob’s Burgers. I know it’s a cartoon and bla bla whatever. But how supportive and loving they are with each other! And how they embrace each of their quirks! And never put each other down! It’s hand’s down the best family dynamic ever!

    • YES YES YES YES

ok I loved fleabag season 2 up until the last second they didn’t get together. I would have rather them not slept together at all.
I thought 99% of it was absolutely brilliant. But with the ending… are we supposed to think the priest is kinda an assh*le then? Are we supposed to just write it off as being imperfectly human? Cuz in my mind logic, that makes the whole confession scene not okay, and why couldn’t he figure himself out before they had sex? What did he find out by hooking up with Fleabag once, a couple times, that he didn’t know prior? I mean, sex is just sex. With the right person it can be something powerful but even then…that takes time to build up to! Before that it’s mostly lust, even when it’s the perfect person. But this also kinda goes with my own personal logic of there’s no such thing as unrequited love, if it’s unrequited it’s oftentimes infatuation or addiction or simply not *that* kind of love…What am I missing?

    • Allyson says...

At the wedding, when you can tell he’s conflicted and she says “is it me or God?” and he doesn’t know…I knew it would be God. And that’s rough. I’m not mad at it. Fleabag loves him, he loves her. It hurts but it’s real. I also love when he says “never come back to my church, and I mean that with the greatest of compliments.”

    • mara says...

I interpreted it as him having found this role as a priest that tells him exactly everything he has to do, just like what fleabag “confessed” she wanted. But unlike her, who got out of it, said goodbye to her imaginary friends (us viewers) and grew stronger, he kinda stayed in that phase. So I think he was just to weak to do what he really wanted and so the fox will continue to haunt him. For me(!) I think he didn’t choose the priesthood out of deep faith but out of fear of living and desparation. But certainly, there are many other interpretations!

Have only recently watched ‘Fleabag’ – OMG – it was electric!!! I The chemistry between Daniel Day-Lewis and Madeleine Stowe in ‘Last of the Mohicans’ has stuck in my mind years after watching it.

  90. Kay says...

Liz and Jack in 30 Rock!!!! They might not have been romantic but their platonic affection for each other was so sweet and genuine — they just *got* each other and would do anything for the other. Love love love them!!

Also Anna Torv and Joshua Jackson in Fringe, my all time fave show. When Olivia got back from the alternate universe and discovered Peter had taken up with Fauxlivia, that look on her face — omg, my heart broke into a thousand little pieces.

More recently — Noah Centineo and Lana Condor from To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before! Those 2 were SO cute I couldn’t stand it I was shipping them so hard! Can’t wait for the sequel 😍

  91. Elizabeth says...

    It’ll pass.

    God. My heart.

Aziraphale and Crowley, the characters in Good Omens played by Michael Sheen and David Tennant, respectively, have amazing chemistry. It never turns sexual, but it is so clear that they love each other. In fact, their chemistry is so good that it has inspired a slew of adorable, heartwarming fan art where the two of them finally get to realize they’re in love.

  92. Erin says...

  94. T says...

Lovesick on Netflix. Evie and Dylan!

  95. Kate says...

My favorite movie “About Time” has great chemistry, not only within the main couple but also between all the friends and family members. They dont have to spell it out for you with cheesy little “hey remember that one time blah blah blah…” You just get it. BFFs, friends of convenience you make when you’re new in town and end up being close to, siblings, father-son, that random family friend,it’s all right there. The characters are unfamiliar to you and yet perfectly known by you, as though they’re your own circle.

    • Chey says...

This! About Time is one of my favorites and everyone I have suggested it to has loved it regardless of who there were. Cannot recommend this movie enough.

    • Isabelle says...

Such an excellent movie, looove Rachel McAdams!

  96. Peta says...

Yes! Fleabag and the hot priests amazing chemistry got me and a pal chatting about what other TV characters could come close , and I came up with Catastrophe too.

  97. Farah Sanders says...

Fitz and Olivia in SCANDAL! Every time they were on screen together. Every. Time.

Also, old 90’s movie, but Denzel Washington and Julia Roberts in the Pelican Brief. They didn’t have a romantic relationship, but had so much chemistry.

    • Roo says...

      YES! Fitz and Olivia.

Also: Liz Lemon and Jack Donaghy. Castle and Beckett – and Fleabag and the hot priest.

  98. Fd says...

    Jessica Jones and Kilgrave

  99. Cynthia says...

Love Before Sunset. Such a romantic movie.

  100. Lauren says...

This is a really great list. Yes to Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke — the absolute best.

My vote is (embarrassingly) for Joshua Jackson and Katie Holmes in Dawson’s Creek!!! The third season when they’re trying to sort out their feelings for one another… I can’t.

    • Rebecca says...

Don’t be embarrassed! I totally agree. When they go off in the boat together…

  101. Kamina says...

The way the romance was played on the original British version of The Office was so subtle, sweet and heart-wrenching. They only had 12 episodes plus two Christmas specials to draw it out so they had fewer moments than Pam and Jim on the American office, but so so amazing. I read somewhere that the writers said they intended it to have all the tension and passion of say a Jane Austen romance – so intense because (being in the workplace) they could never really touch each other but found ways to share in-jokes and subtle exchanges and longing looks. It was so well-done, and the ending is one of my favourite moments in TV.

    • Wj says...

Agree with this one. British Tim and Dawn were perfect.

  102. Kamina says...

All the couples in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I’d never seen a single episode before, but my husband and I started bingeing it on DVD earlier this year. I did not expect to be so obsessed with the romances on this show. So complicated, so heart-warming, so hot!

  103. Megan says...

Keeley Hawes and Richard Madden in Bodyguard.. restrained and sexy

  104. FT says...

    Mindy Kaling & BJ Novak!

  105. nuzhat says...

Ralph Fiennes and Kristin Scott Thomas in The English Patient- gold standard of onscreen chemistry.
Also Will and Alicia in The Good Wife

  106. mikaela says...

    It’s the best. Underrated.

  107. Not couple chemistry but I love the chemistry between the girls on The Bold Type, they have this Friend chemistry that is so amazing!
And while we’re on the topic of Friend chemistry the following shows also have it:
    Friends (obviously!)
    Brooklyn Nine Nine
    Parks and Rec
Scrubs – though I think we can all agree that JD and Turk have one of the best on screen chemistries around.
There is something so refreshing about a show that focuses on friendships and life going through it’s ups and downs.

    • Z says...

YES! Turk and JD are friendship goals. And also Burton Guster and Shawn from Psych!

    • Alexandra says...

      KEANU & SANDRA… SPEED!
Classic action movie. That slide off the bus…! That kiss on the train at the end. I wonder if the relationship starting in extreme intensity lasted?! (In the film universe!)

  108. Jesse says...

Sam Heughan and Catriona Balfe in Outlander. The wedding episode in Season 1… holy hell.

    • Valerie says...

I immediately thought of Sam and Catriona in Outlander! Second that!

    • Molly says...

Came here to say this. My friend and I both found ourselves (jokingly… sort of) questioning our marriages and if we even knew what love was after bingeing the series ha

    • Wendy says...

      So.true

    • Wj says...

      Yes!

  109. samantha says...

I have to add Peggy and Don from Mad Men. Not a couple, not necessarily friends but a mentor of sorts and a protege. I remember watching that show and hoping for a scene with them. Their chemistry was electric!

The scene where Peggy quits, Don kisses her hand and right before she leaves says ‘don’t be a stranger’ gets me every time!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      yes!!!

    • Lindsay says...

So true! I really wanted something to happen too. But it was almost too special, like it had to be different then how he is with every other woman he’s close to!

    • Heather says...

Yes! Loved their relationship and how it developed and they depended on each other.

But also Peggy and Pete?! Even though he had his bad moments they always had a connection and it felt real watching them.

Then of course Peggy and Stan too! So happy with they finally got together.

  110. Ginny says...

    KNEEL. That’s all.

      Electric!

LION was torture. i SOBBED for two hours and then immediately the next day i started drilling my 3 yr old about her name and address :(

but i 10000% agree about Rob and Sharon. I love them.

  113. MA says...

Brokeback Mountain! This movie just killed me. Jake and Heath FTW!
Also Tony Leung Chiu Wa and Maggie Cheung in “In the Mood for Love” – a gorgeous film.

    • Abigail says...

I watched it once and found it so overwhelmingly powerful that I can’t watch it again. Kite Runner’s another movie that falls into “never watch again” category.

    • Nicole says...

Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone in Crazy Stupid Love. That Dirty Dancing scene, ohhhh my!

  114. Karin says...

    Out of Sight
    George Clooney & Jennifer Lopez
    zoowzers!

    • Jax says...

Yes! That’s in the top 10 along with Bogart and Bergman in Casablanca and Bogart and um Bacall in, uh, anything. Gable and Leigh in GWTW. Hepburn and Peck in Roman Holiday.

  118. Lucy says...

Yes! I could watch A Room with a View over and over. I love the modern Pride and Prejudice with Keira Knightley, there’s a scene where Mr Darcy helps her into a carriage after she’s come to pick up her sick sister Jane, they pan down to his hand and he flexes it as a reaction to touching her hand. I can watch that scene over and over.

I also loved the chemistry in About Time, it felt real and natural.

    • Megan says...

That Pride & Prejudice scene has been seared into my brain. So good! Then they repeat the hand image when she visits him at Pemberley. I loved About Time, too!

    • G says...

PRIDE AND PREJUDICE OMG MR DARCY MRS DARCY

    • Susan Magnolia says...

I love Pride and Prejudice so much and it ends right when they are finally together! I always wish it would continue to see their relationship continue to unfold.

    • Jeanne says...

Omg I love that scene! The briefest contact back then meant so much. Now I need to watch that movie again.

    • Leo says...

Yes! That hand movement is so real!

And… and…. Jim and Pam from the Officer! John Krasinski’s facial expressions in the intimate moments are so real!

    • June says...

I love that hand scene in Pride and Prejudice- the looks and tiny touches between the two of them – amazing. I also love About Time! I love everything about that movie, but especially what he says about being in the moment. So hard. So good.

    • Roxana says...

      YES!

All of it, BUT that last scene “Mrs. Darcy. . . Mrs. Darcy. . .” I’m having a hot flash just thinking about it.

  119. Mia says...

beth + randall and jack + rebecca on this is us!!😱🤩

    • Mia says...

      omg and kate + toby

    • K says...

      Omg yes!! All of these!

  120. Julee says...

    1. Chemistry in Hancock, between Will Smith and Charlize Theron (when they’re crammed in that tiny trailer kitchen setting stuff literally on fire), had me blushing.
    2. Season 1 of Homeland, Claire Danes and Damian Lewis=HOTTTTT. Strange, but HOT.

    • LP says...

TOTALLY re Homeland — so, so strange and yet they did have amazing chemistry!

    • Ashley says...

Waiting for someone to say it too: Brodie & Carrie on Homeland. Twisted but FIRE!

  121. Chloe Bongiorno says...

Ryan Gosling & Emma Stone – AMAZING chemistry!

    • Nicole says...

THIS! That Dirty Dancing scene in Crazy Stupid Love, ohhhh my!

  122. J says...

I love this topic, and these are some great picks! I was really caught off guard by Nick and Jess on New Girl. I was expecting it to be funny, but wasn’t expecting it to be kind of hot…

A few picks I would add-
Andy Samberg and Melissa Fumero on Brooklyn 99 (slightly biased as Andy Samberg is my number 1 celeb crush, but still, they’re incredible together)
Kristen Bell and William Jackson Harper on The Good Place!
Amy Poehler and Adam Scott on Parks and Rec….

Ok wow these are all Mike Schur shows. Safe to say that guy and his casting department really know how to pick em…

    • C says...

      Oh mama!

  123. Jasna says...

Ryan Gosling and Rachel Mcadms in Notebook.

Also, Angela Chase and Jordan Catalano foreva :)

    • Tori says...

Yes to these! Ugh Jordan Catalano = forever crush

    • Isabelle says...

Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke are the best, but Rachel McAdams + Ryan Gosling (The notebook), Emma Stone + Ryan Gosling (Lala land), Meryl Streep + Clint Eastwood (Bridges of Madison county) and Hilary Swank + Gerard Butler (p.s. I love you) are just next!

  124. enu says...

Ohhhhh Celeste + Jess Forever. Underrated film that is soooo goood.

    • samantha says...

so true!!!! rashida and andy were such a great pair!

    • Laura says...

      Sooo good!

    • Sara says...

      Was going to say this.

Also jenny slate and jake in obvious child.

  125. Rebecca says...

Maybe just me but Pacey and Joey in Dawson’s Creek. They had great chemistry and are one of the best tv couples. (Alongside Jim & Pam of course) When he buys her the wall. Sigh.

    • Emma says...

Yes!! The banter, the forehead kisses, the eyes, oh my!
I watch episodes of this and skip to the Pacey and Joey scenes. It really should have been called Pacey’s Creek, because who actually cared about Dawson?!

    • Jill says...

      Not just you!

    • Wj says...

I am watching Dawson’s creek for the first time. Team Pacey all the way.

  126. Kim says...

Veronica and Logan!! Rewatching all of Veronica Mars….

    • Rebecca says...

My very favourite. I’ve watched it all so many times and the chemistry between those two is what keeps me coming back.

    • Ranwi says...

Yes!!! To me Veronica and Logan is the hottest couple in tv history… Must rewatch soon.

    • Darby says...

Yes! I love Veronica Mars! I just watched season 4:) Veronica and Logan are the best but Veronica and Leo also have awesome chemistry together, even as “just friends”. I also love the relationship between Veronica and her dad- lots of banter back and forth but you also see their care and concern for each other.
My other guilty pleasure is a silly movie called Leap Year with Amy Adams and Matthew Goode- it is such a cheesy movie but I still love it and it is fun to watch them together.

    • Wj says...

Yes to this one, though I am pretending the series ended after the reunion movie.

  127. Laura F says...

Meryl Streep and Robert Redford in Out of Africa. That push-and-pull, the I-don’t-need-you (but I do).

  128. Jodie Foster and Chow Yun-fat in Anna and the King. Maybe it has something to do with love that cannot be. On second though, nope. It’s just them! If you haven’t seen it, it’s so good!

    • Sara B says...

Yes! I love this movie and The King and I. I bawl my eyes out at the end

  129. Zulema says...

Totally with you about Fleabag…OMG when they kiss right before having sex….yummy

  130. Naomi says...

I second Meryl Streep and Clint Eastwood in The Bridges of Madison County. Such a beautiful movie. And Scarlett and Gunnar from Nashville, (until season5/6), so many moments…..any nashies out there?

  131. Julee says...

Really? No Stranger Things fans? Joyce and Hopper? Eleven and Mike? But NOT Nancy and Jonathan…too boring.

    • Suzanne says...

      Agreed on all three counts!!!

    • Lucy says...

YES! Love Eleven and Mike. And Joyce and Hopper have gotta get it on at some point, right?

    • Lindsay says...

I loved the friend chemistry or bromance of Dustin and Steve!! Adore those 2!!

    • Amy says...

Love Joyce & Hopper together. Mike and Eleven are good, too, but kinda annoy me in their teenage stage haha.

Steve & Dustin’s developing friendship cracks me up, too!

    • Wj says...

I like Nancy and Steve. Am i the only one?

  132. Ellen says...

Jamie and Claire on OUTLANDER. Two words: “The Wedding” (*fans self*)

    • Julie says...

YES! Jamie and Claire! They are incredible together…. Makes me all hot and bothered to watch their love scenes haha!

    • Lori H says...

      NO KIDDING!! Scandalous and intense!

    • Lindsay says...

There might be a reason I named my last child Jamie lol !!! He’s so perfect. I think him with anyone would be fun to watch

  133. Lily says...

Ross & Demelza on Poldark. Despite the ups and downs they are meant to be together forever, and so beautiful!

    • Susan Magnolia says...

      Yes! They are beautiful.

    • J says...

omg yes – the most beautiful!

    • Midge says...

Yes! Their first love scene is smoking hot.

  134. Carrie says...

    These are great!

This is slightly cheesy but I honestly watched so many seasons of Bones because the chemistry between David Boreanaz and Emily Deschanel was so delightful!

    • Elizabeth says...

Not just you! This was my first thought. They just seemed so plausible, in the midst of a pretty silly premise.

  135. Kristyn says...

Before Sunrise – I love the scene with Jesse and Celine in the listening booth at the record shop. Chills!

  136. Courtney says...

I need to add: Meryl Streep and Clint Eastwood in The Bridges of Madison County. I was like: leave your family. Be with this man.

    • Julee says...

Um, I KNOW, Courtney. Picture me, sobbing like a baby, tears running down my face, watching the movie as an impressionable 17 year old. Clint and Meryl set that screen on fire…

    • Emma says...

I completely agree with this! That is, hands down, the best romantic movie I’ve seen.

    • Russell and Glen in “Weekend” — incredible chemistry and a movie worth watching. It’s on Netflix!

  137. Jessica says...

OK, CoJ readers, please help me with something:

I have never had the guts to watch Before Midnight because I LOVE LOVE LOVE those characters so much I didn’t want to be disappointed if it turned out to be, well, disappointing.
Jesse and Celine’s romance unfolded right when I was almost their age, and planning my own train trip around Europe. The second movie came out when I was experiencing the ennui of early 30-something singlehood (that part in the car where Celine gets pissed about the diminishing returns of love? That cut waaaaaay too close to the bone). Now I’m in my 40s, married, with a kid, and… I’m not sure I could stand to see Jesse and Celine in their mid-40s married, with kids, just bickering and without the romance.

So tell me: Should I watch Before Midnight? Is it good? Will I still feel the love?

    Thank you in advance.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

you might want to skip it, tbh, jessica! it’s kind of an intense film. i still loved it but if you’re looking for more of a romantic feel, it’s not that. i think the filmmaker was in the mood for something more dramatic for this one:) for a long-time love story, i’d recommend the notebook or the son of the bride — both touching and romantic movies. xoxo

    • sam says...

It’s not as romantic as the first two that’s for sure. It’s still good though, but there is a scene of them crucifying each other with words that cut so deep the first time I watched it and I was like 27. I would recommend maybe waiting until you are out of your 40’s to watch it, get a little space.

That said, I really want them to do another Before movie together when they are in their sixties. Just them enjoying their love in a different way than when they were younger.

    • Bianca says...

See I loved Before Midnight, because the first two movies felt other worldly….filled with possibility but almost not real. Before midnight felt like a real couple with a ton of history bickering on vacation. Some might find it too real. But I found it comforting that even the most sizzling 20s romance can change and deepen. Personally I loved it because I love the characters and the location was visually stunning

    • Stella says...

Personally, I highly recommend Before Midnight. It might actually be my favorite movie. Yes, it’s not as fluttery-romantic as the previous two films, but the love between Jesse and Celine is even more poignant now that their lives are so entangled. This is a movie about REAL romance. They have an epic fight where you see them push each other’s buttons and drive each other very close to the edge, but you also see what holds them together. I don’t want to totally spoil it for you, but there’s a part at the end where Jesse reminds Celine that even though they’re married and old and their youthful passion might have waned, there is still a SPARK that’s worth fighting for. This movie came out the month I got married, and for the past six years, I still ruminate over that incredibly relatable fight and the tired but hopeful way they resolve it. Is it hard to watch them bicker and hurt each other in ways you know they’ve done over and over again? Yes. But it’s also so beautifully reassuring to see that after getting through incredible odds and years and years together, these two people still find their way back to each other.

    • Julie says...

      Don’t do it!!!

    • Anna says...

Ahhh, Before Midnight will cut you riiiight in the heart, because the feelings and fights and hurt and frustration is all too relatable. But I can’t not recommend it, because as someone once said about the movie compared to other movies depicting romantic love: “Getting together is easy. It’s the staying together that’s hard.” In Before Midnight, Celine and Jesse show a side of love that’s in some ways even more romantic and inspiring than the earlier films — the fierce, intense, ugly fighting they do with and for each other because their love has matured into something so multi-faceted. Is it a wholly happy film? No. Is it a wholly sad film? No. As corny as it sounds, like life, it’s both happy and sad and perhaps more just what you make of it.

  138. Irene says...

Bogart and Hepburn in The African Queen. Just saw it again and couldn’t believe the chemistry

    • Rachel says...

Sooo good! I love their awkwardness!

  139. Melinda says...

I loved all of these. Chemistry is such a funny and ill-defined thing, but I know it when I see it!

Would add to this list: Mindy Kaling and Chris Messina in The Mindy Project; Molly and Amy in BookSmart; Meryl Streep and Steve Martin AND Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin in Its Complicated; Phillip and Elizabeth Jennings in The Americans.

    • Danielle says...

Yes! I couldn’t believe no one mentioned The Americans. Also a real-life couple!

OMG I forgot the couple I originally meant to say! HOW DID WE FORGET JERRY AND ELAINE?! I love their friend chemistry, their old sexual tension, and their IRL sweetness with each other when JLD is on Comedians in Cars.

Yeah for The Americans! When Elizabeth says, in Russian, to Phillip, “Come home,” I just about died.

Yes, 100% agree on Kaling and Messina. But then again, I feel like Messina (one of my top crushes) can add the sizzle to almost any pairing. He almost salvaged the (horrible) relationship in Julie and Julia.

Speaking of Streep, her chemistry with Tucci in Julie and Julia was off the rocks. And her chemistry with Hathaway in the Devil Wears Prada.

HERE for The Americans. I have such a weird crush on Phil. He’s a killer but with such a good heart, how can you not love him?!

Oh Melinda, so agree—that episode of Jerry and Julia Louis Dreyfus in Comedians with Cars is the sweetest. They have such a dear and darling friend chemistry!! Love seeing them make each other laugh and finish each other’s stories. That’s one of the episodes Ive watched multiple times.

Yes to Philip and Elizabeth. That scene in the car in the first episode. Fans self.

    Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks!

      Yes!

Old-school: Katharine Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart in The African Queen.

Don and Peggy in Mad Men. Such a rich, unique, and ever-changing relationship. I can’t think of another TV relationship that’s even similar!

Nick and Jess definitely made me catch my breath when they first got together. But just looking at stills from Fleabag makes my stomach flip flop. Oh, holy cow were you ever right when you recommended it and I I practically force people I know to watch it now! Also for your consideration, Mr. Oak and Miss Everdeen in Far From the Madding Crowd. Swoon.
