Which Lipstick Color Would You Choose?

Three Burt's Bees Satin Lipsticks

Do you have any plans for Valentine’s Day? We usually skip the crowded restaurants and make a cozy dinner at home, but it’s still nice to dress up a bit. To set the mood, we teamed up with Burt’s Bees and Amazon.com to try three beautiful lipsticks. Which would suit your personality best?

Three Burt's Bees Satin Lipsticks

Burt’s Bees, the natural brand that was founded in Maine over 30 years ago, recently introduced a full line of cosmetics on Amazon.com, including these Satin Lipsticks. Their 100% natural formulation, infused with red raspberry seed oil and Vitamin E, offers eight-hour moisture AND color that lasts throughout the day. The range of colors is so lovely, and they feel really rich and creamy. The best part? They are priced at around $7 each.

Lipstick #1: Doused Rose. This pink hue is subtle but gives lips a polished look. Going to a movie? Planning a daytime date? Staying in? This would be a pretty pick.

Lipstick #2: Suede Splash. This cool shade reminds us of the brown lipsticks that ruled 90s beauty looks — and have made a big comeback recently. Wouldn’t it be fun for a party, bar or concert?

Lipstick #3: Russet River. What could be more classic for Valentine’s Day than a rich red? This version is sexy and daring while still looking kissable and fresh. The red would be perfect for a dinner date or a romantic winter walk.

Bonus for readers: Burt’s Bees lipsticks are 20% off on Amazon.com right now. They’re so pretty and moisturizing; we’d highly recommend them.

Thoughts? Which color (or colors) would you try?

  1. Personally I’m all for pink tones but you look so great in russet river!

  2. I had high hopes for Burt’s bees and bought a stick back in January but it comes off SO easily. It comes off IMMEDIATely. It’s really moisturizing and pretty but stays on for only 5 minutes.

  3. Nichole says...

Ooh, I love russet river. Just purchased!

  4. I love Russet river. X

  5. Anna says...

    Suede splash!

  6. Rebecca says...

She has an amazing complexion. Like a tea cup!

  7. Kirsten says...

I always wish that lipstick could be my thing, but many wasted lipsticks later I’ve proven to myself that Smith’s Rosebud Salve is my one any only.

  8. Alison says...

I love her white shirt! Where is it from?

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      reformation! xo

  9. Kristina says...

The model looks beautiful in each shade, but I would probably pick Doused Rose. I am very fair with cool undertones, and the brown in the other two lipsticks would not work for me.

  10. Liz says...

i LOVE Burt’s Bee’s but I own one of these and unfortunately I would not recommend it. The lip color does not stay on your lips even if you aren’t really eating/drinking water and it also moves around and will end up…basically on your face if you aren’t careful. So bummed it didn’t work out.

  11. Laura says...

I would definitely choose the Suede Splash color for myself! I’m not a huge lipstick wearer, but could see using it as a fun more neutral color to compliment my skin and hair colors.

  12. Linda says...

I think molel looks beautiful in all 3 shades. I personally have 2 out of the 3 and seeing the pictures make me want to try the third.

  13. layla says...

Gaby looks great in all of these colours! But as a women with a darker skin tone , it would be nice to see what these shades look like on different women. Maybe having three models with different skin tones, so that we can see what it might look like with darker and lighter skin tones? This site does such a great job with diversity in regular posts, that it would be nice to incorporate that diversity in these sponsored posts as well!

  14. Celeste says...

I have one and find it gritty, the color’s not long lasting and the point melts. Super happy with the new Maybelline lip pallets though! A shot of raspberry is just what I need to get through the winter.

  15. LOVE BB lipstick! Affordable + dermatologist approved and bonus – they look great on so many skin tones!

  16. I have Suede Splash and it is for sure dreamy. I wear it on top of a cocoa rosa lipstick from Besame that’s modeled after a color from 1970.

  17. Denise says...

I faithfully wear the Burt’s Bees tinted lip balm in Red Dahlia but it’s usually gone by 10am. I love it for the moisture but I’m excited for something that lasts longer. Russet River will be my first pick.

    • Courtney says...

Denise, I do the same! I love the color and moisture. I’ve tried the other colors, but the Red Dahlia is my favorite for my coloring (brown eyes/hair, olive skin). Even though it’s not a lipstick that stays on all day, I think it gives a great natural-looking tint that a lipstick’s polished look can’t quite achieve.

  18. Gorgeous colors! I love Doused Rose and Russet River – both really pretty berry colors that seem perfect for every day. Will have to check them out! Also, there’s a great documentary on Burt’s Bees called Burt’s Buzz, about the founders. Super interesting story.

  19. Jenn says...

I just ordered the Russet River; I am a sucker for dark red lipstick.
And since I was already on Amazon, I also ordered Burt Bee’s Tinted Lip Zinnia and Yes to Cucumbers Facial Wipes. Happy FriYAY!

  20. Shevon says...

    I want them all!!!

  21. MaryMargaret says...

Well, Canada for the win! That brown lipstick I wore on repeat and that blouse that I am positive I drove across the border for and picked up at Le Chateau in Windsor are both taking me back to my 90s high school self. (This is me in grade nine baby, this is me in grade nine.)

  22. AJ says...

They all look lovely but the third one is my fave. Big fan of Burt’s Bees lip products, super moisturising and staying power for the price!

  23. kelly lewis says...

Is the original photo color the same as the #3 Russet River (it looks a bit more red)? I must have it! :)

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      yes!

  24. Meg says...

she is so pretty it hurts a little.

  25. Doused rose was too cool for me. My current favorite s
    Lily Lake
    Sunset Cruise
    In the crayons
    Tahitian Sunset
    Niagra Overlook.
    Prefer the medium shades.

  26. I’ve used this lipstick and while at first I loved the color and consistency, it got really grainy after a couple of weeks and no longer went on evenly. Hope it works better for others!

  27. Susie says...

I *just* bought my first Burt’s Bee’s lipstick yesterday. It had good reviews, and it’s inexpensive. The one I tried is “scarlet soaked” which is very red.

  28. Sarah says...

The Doused Rose is very pretty, and it’s the closest to my natural lip color, which has historically been the only lipstick shade I can wear. (Despite my attempts at bold red lips a few years back!)

That said, I’m a devotee of Burt’s Bees Tinted Lip Balm in Rose–it gives me a dash of color without being too different from my natural color and also, well, lip balm (especially here in chilly, chilly Chicago). It’s the only lip color I have in my minimalist make up kit right now!

  29. Kaitlin says...

Doused rose looks like what I wore in high school, so would avoid. I like nude that have a bit of shimmer. That’d be suede splash for me. But honestly, I love BBs for their basic chapstick. My lips get so dry this time of year and my worst pregnancy symptom so far as been continuous cold sores. The best balm for the worst lips!

  30. With the coupon code, this is a STEAL. I am obsessed with the Burts Bees lipsticks, and especially the lip crayons, too!

These photos are breathtaking. All you need is a lace blouse and a swipe of lipstick to feel ultra-feminine!

Red lipsticks scare me, but Russet River looks perfect for any complexion!

  31. I love the Russet River! I feel that it looks so good in bight pale skin like mines! I love the color!! *_*
    KIss*

  32. Cynthia says...

I like them all. It would be hard to choose just one.

  33. Julia says...

    For V.D. Id wear R.R!

  34. I love their lipsticks! I’m hardcore about my cosmetic ingredients (which means I look at almost zero products recommended here, to be honest!), and these are some of my favorite lipsticks. So much more affordable than most natural makeup, and a relatively simple ingredients list. For those worrying about the company, or EWG, read the ingredients yourselves and see! It’s not that hard to tell. And if you’re looking for a true classic red, they have a lip crayon that’s just right (which also comes in some lovely pinks!). They don’t last all day but that’s the worthy price you pay for using something good for your body.

  35. #2 Suede Splash is my favorite. So pretty!

  36. Stephanie says...

These look lush and beautiful, so it’s such a shame the promo code only works for US Amazon. Unfortunately, even with the 20% discount, paying overseas shipping prevents this from being a worthwhile deal for me…

    • Rachel L says...

Hi Stephanie! Not sure where you’re based, but if in the UK then Amazon here has the Burts Bees make-up range…the lipsticks are £9.99…I have a couple of colours and I love them!

  37. Russet river all the way. It’ll look good on anyone. The other 2 run the risk of making some skin tones look washed out

  38. Alex says...

This model looks absolutely gorgeous in every shade and is making me want to buy them all. And I don’t even usually wear lipstick!

  39. KL says...

The Russett River was made for her.

  40. Meghan says...

I have been a longtime fan of Burt’s Bee’s, but recently I was disappointed when they changed their formula for the Red Dahlia tinted lip balm. (shoutout to Stella, who mentioned it in her beauty uniform!) I emailed the company on two occasions as this was my every day go to, but never heard back. In case anyone from BB’s is reading here- please go back to your old formula!! Also, I wear the Russet River regularly, (the closest colour to Red Dahlia in their lipstick line) and I also love Scarlett Soaked!

  41. Cynthia says...

    Doused Rose is so pretty!

  42. Natalie says...

Damn, Gaby makes me want them all! I need to know all her secrets because she is absolutely stunning. Please share her beauty uniform!

    • Lauren says...

      I second this!

    • Lisa Hayward says...

      Yes!

    • Yes please! She is gorgeous! Totally in love with her hair.

    • Kay says...

      I second this!!

    • Sarah says...

I agree!! What beautiful photos! A beauty uniform would be great!

  43. Love love these shades! My cousin recently introduced me to Burt’s Bees lipssticks & I had been meaning to try one of these. Thanks for the reminder – definitely taking advantage of the discount and buying a couple of shades! ; )

  44. Amy says...

I have long believed Burts Bees lipstick was my little drugstore secret; I had no idea the lipstick was so popular! I wear Brimming Berry a few times a week and often get compliments! :) For reference: I have fair skin, dark hair and blue eyes.

  45. I love Burt’s Bees lip balms, miiiiiiiiiight have to branch out to their lipsticks too. I buy at Whole Foods/Whole Body, so, Amazon, hmm.

    • Kim says...

Amazon owns Whole Foods now :)

  46. Aya says...

I have both Suede Splash and Russet River! Both are wonderful and I love the formula! They feel great on.

  47. Kristina says...

Thank you! I’ve been on a search for both a daytime lip color and something a little more moody for the evening. I purchased #1 and #3 and can’t wait to try them! We are going to brave the crowds for the first time in years and go for a dinner out : )

  48. How is the staying power of the lipstick? Does it last all day, or does it require reapplying?

    • Katie Larissa says...

I find that it doesn’t stay all day. It definitely has to be reapplied, especially if you’re eating and drinking.

    • I think Burt’s Bees lasts the longest of all my lipsticks, including those expensive ones I’ve been tricked into buying over the years. The best part is that the color wears off evenly, so there are no weird lip outlines or darker lines in the chapped parts of my lips. I never worry about color weirdness or have to ask how my lipstick looks after drinking when I’m wearing Burt’s Bees.

    • Ellen says...

I have Suede Splash and Russet River–they do wear off a bit throughout the day, but the color doesn’t totally come off. Rather than being left with bare lips after some coffees and lunch, you’re left with a really pretty stain. I sometimes reapply, and sometimes enjoy the stained look :)

  49. S says...

Love love love lipstick posts. A lipstick is such a fun gift to give myself. I refer to your red lipstick post from
    Years ago often.

I wish however, we could c these same colors pm a fair blond, as I am one.
    Thanks

  50. Emma Ricupero says...

I ordered Peony Dew- perfect for the spring!

  51. Sidra says...

I have the last two and love them!

  52. S says...

I tried to use the promo code on amazon and it didn’t work. Is it because I’m a prime member?

    • Joanna Goddard says...

I’m checking with them right now! They say it should work, but maybe there is a little bug. Stay tuned! xo

    • Alex says...

It seems to only work on one tube for me. I added three to my cart and entered the code but it only deducted the 20% from one of them. I’m also a prime member. Oh well. At least they’re pretty cheap to begin with!

    • Bethany says...

Same here. Prime member, code cannot be applied.

These lip colors are beautiful! I’m going with Doused Rose and Fuchsia Flood, myself.

Holy smokes, Gaby is incredibly gorgeous in these photos.

  53. Colleen S says...

I definitely like the Russet River. I’ll have to check this out when I’m shopping again.

  54. Louise says...

Love the Russet color. Promo code not working on Amazon but it is on sale! Maybe that’s why?

  55. Traci says...

Russet River is my hands down choice, it’s very sultry!

  56. Katie Larissa says...

Whilst I was upstairs changing clothes two days ago, my 2 darling little boys (ha) dug all four of my Burt’s bees lipsticks out of my [zipped] bag and painted themselves, the living room rug, and the pale blue recliner with them. I just cried. And then I cut their fingernails, because they were literally caked with lipstick. Guys, I was so frustrated. They were BRAND NEW. And I don’t spend $ on beauty products often. BUT I only yelled a little bit, and truthfully it was my fault too for leaving the lipsticks where they could reach them.

    • M.K says...

Oh my goodness. So Frustrating!! Kids have such a way of finding our buttons to push and it is SO HARD to keep it all in perspective. I’m struggling this week with my 3 year old and misbehavior- taking deep breaths and listening to Janet Lansbury “unruffled” on repeat.
Sending you calm- and hope you can replace those lipsticks and clean the chair!!

    • KL says...

I hope some day this is a funny story for you! Xo

  57. TjP says...

As a blonde, I just scrolled until I found the red. So, red! Russian River, although that kind of sounds like a euphemism for ‘time of the month’. Sorry, I am a weirdo.

  58. claire says...

The rose and red are gorgeous! but it’s also the model – her hair is so lovely and full. can she give hair tips??

  59. Jill says...

They all look really good, Maybe the dark red, or the pink!I love Burts Bees. We use soooo much of their stuff. My daughter who is 13 still uses the baby wash bc she has sensitive skin and it’s the only thing that doesn’t irritate her. I love the cleansing oil to wash my face and take my makeup off. but I think we need this models hair secrets!!!

  60. Erin says...

I think her shirt may be from reformation?

  61. t says...

Is she wearing russet river in the top photo too?

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      yes!

  62. Lori says...

I have to go with the Suede Splash!

  63. Bethany says...

Am I the only one who thinks the model looks like Anne Hathaway?

    • t says...

to me in one photo she looks like emmy rossum, in one like catherine zeta jones and another like marisa tomei. plus a little liv tyler thrown in. obvy she is very beautiful.

    • Ms says...

My first thought too. Especially the last photo.

    • Emma Ricupero says...

I definitely think she looks like Anne Hathaway!!

  64. Eliza says...

We live in Raleigh, and my husband has worked for Burt’s Bees since before Clorox made the purchase. The company very intentionally strives to maintain Burt’s Bees as its own entity, with its natural care focus always a priority (as Burt and Roxanne Quimby intended). Needless to say, we LOVE Burt’s products in our house, and my husband would not have been able to stay as long as he has if the basic tenet of “The Greater Good” had been sacrificed along the way. ;-)

    • Melanie says...

That’s great to hear! Thanks for posting this.

    • Jill says...

I am soooo glad! B/c we have used their products for years and I only recently learned they were not a small company anymore. But I researched it and the are still non toxic! I posted above that my daughter uses the baby wash even though she is 13 b/c it’s the only thing that does not irritate her sensitive skin, I guess she’s used it about 12 years! I love the new cleansing oil for washing my face!!!

  65. Charu says...

For a true lipstick lover(*cough* hoarder!) its like asking which child you love more ..We don’t have favorites..I choose all of you!
(but for real, Russet River and my 1st born :D)

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      hahahahaha

    • MaryMargaret says...

Hah! This comment made me laugh out loud. Same for Russet River (but I always pick my husband as the favorite…). I have a million tubes stashed everywhere (desk, purse, coat pockets, vanity, kitchen junk drawer) and I love them all!

  66. Ali says...

Love the doused rose. Would definitely wear on nearly any occasion.

  67. Lily says...

Russet river FTW! She looks gorgeous.

  68. Maggie says...

Definitely last one! And do you have any intel on the shirt she’s wearing?

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      i’ll ask her!

    • victoria says...

I’d love to know as well!

    • Rae says...

Yes, would love to know where her shirt is from or a similar version!

    • Meems says...

Reformation. Gaby tagged it on her instagram.

    • Kristien says...

Adding my request to know her blouse!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      reformation! :)

  69. Laura C. says...

    Yayyyyy beautiful Gaby is back!!
I love Burt’s Bees, I got a chapstick last year in the UK because we can’t find them here in my country and I love it! The pink one is awesome.
Ps. Gaby please give us a Beauty Uniform!!

    • Gabrielle says...

      Second this!!

    • Emily says...

      I third this!

    • Ms says...

      Fourth this!

  70. Polly says...

Just a FYI for your readers Burt’s bee’s is owned by the Clorox Company. Not sure how “natural” they are.

    • Melanie says...

When I found that out, I stopped purchasing. Did I read somewhere that Clorox still does animal testing?

    • Joanna Goddard says...

This is what the Clorox site says: Clorox is committed to the welfare of animals. We do not conduct or ask third parties to conduct any animal testing on products, raw materials or components of finished products unless required by law. The vast majority of our products reach the market without testing on animals. Animal testing is the rare exception, occurring only when all other efforts have been exhausted to establish a product’s safety profile. Such exceptions require senior management approval, certifying there is no other way to proceed. In those instances, Clorox will conduct appropriate safety testing at an independent laboratory accredited by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International. AAALAC promotes standards of animal welfare that exceed federal law and conducts regular inspections of its accredited laboratories. We’re working toward a future where animal testing has no role in product development. We believe we should be able to use existing data and alternative tests so animals are not involved in product-safety testing. Through engagement with regulators, we’re encouraging them to join our efforts to identify and implement innovative solutions, such as in vitro (cell-based) methods, that eliminate the existing requirements to conduct animal testing without compromising product safety. These initiatives are part of a longtime effort at Clorox to develop alternatives to conventional animal testing. • Sarah says...

yes their ingredients are all natural. i checked with my derm and researched online when i was first pregnant and used them through two more pregnancies since then!

    • Melanie says...

Joanna, thank you for that information! Really fast reaponse. That makes me feel better and can start using BB products again.

    • Nicole Brant says...

They were purchased by Clorox but still maintain their formulas. However, being owned by Clorox now means they are sold in mainland China, where animal testing is required by law. So if you want cruelty free, it’s up to you where you draw the line. Hope that helps!

  71. Sheena says...

    ooooh definitely Russet River!
