What’s Your Fall Uniform?

What's Your Fall Uniform?

Are you wearing a uniform these days? With autumn only ten days away, we’ve been on the hunt for those easy, cozy pieces we can wear over and over. In partnership with J. Crew, we pulled together three outfits we’d love to wear on repeat this season…

What's Your Fall Uniform?

A fun way to experiment with a monochrome look? Wear all denim. A slouchy chambray shirt looks good tucked into vintage-style jeans. Add a green quilted jacket, leather loafers and a bright red lipstick, if you’d like some contrasting color.

What's Your Fall Uniform?

For the office, it’s great to find outfits that are both cute and comfy. This soft camel sweater blazer makes a classic white shirt and black trousers feel modern and relaxed. Bonus points for these d’Orsay flats that dress up a look without killing your feet.

What's Your Fall Uniform?

Give your striped T-shirt a cool weekend upgrade with wide-leg chinos and patterned loafers. (How cute would this ensemble be with this denim chore jacket on chilly days?)

What's Your Fall Uniform?

Don’t you love this time of year? What are you wearing these days? See J. Crew’s full fall collection here, if you’d like. So many great pieces.

(Photos by Christine Han. Thanks to Jo Jude for modeling. This post is sponsored by J. Crew, a brand we’ve worn for years. Thank you for supporting the brands that support Cup of Jo.)

The sweater blazer is a delight in person, and they are already starting to go out of stock! I went in store to check it out, only to discover the size/color I want is no longer available in store or online.

J Crew, if you are reading, please please restock all sizes in black :)

    • shannon says...

Oops, I meant the other version of the blazer that has full length sleeves and two buttons.

  2. aya says...

    Wowie–What a beautiful woman!

  3. ugh, i love it.

  4. Jenn says...

black leggings, black leather jacket over a black hoodie. under that? depends on the weather..right now (early fall) i never know what temp it’s going to be by 4:30p when i leave the office when i get dressed at my house at 7:45a. it’s yet to be truly chilly, so even with the layered jacket i’ve been living in flip flops and a tank top, or even just skipping all the black and going straight back to my sundresses haha. i’m so ready for my rainboots though!

  5. Fernanda Abreu says...

What a beautiful woman. Wow! And she seems so cute. Her description on instagram is the best “The laziest, most uncreative writer you’ve never heard about.”. Kisses from Brazil :)

  6. Allison says...

This model is the whole post!

  7. anna maria says...

I love love love your blog because of the original, smart pieces you put out, but I have to say that these posts drive me a little nuts. I feel like it’s a tv commercial I want to skip. It seems like you’re just pushing certain brands/products and there really isn’t anything original in the post at all, just a bunch of links to j. crew clothes that j. crew wants you to buy.

  8. Alex says...

J Crew has been a major flop for me lately, so I’m thrilled to see some of these classic pieces that can carry us into fall!!

  9. She is KILLING it in these outfits!

  10. Veronica says...

That second photo is very close to my planned fall uniform! I just got that sweater blazer in the mail yesterday, and I’m expecting a pair of the new Everlane denim line in the mail any day now. Instead of flats, I am going to pair it with a pair of Everlane loafers and an old silk blouse from my closet.

  11. Meg says...

Guh, this model just maaaaakes these outfits. Pretty woman, fun clothes!

  12. Katherine says...

If you buy one thing from J Crew this season buy the sweater blazer! It’s a very flattering length (covers your butt!) and very well made. I bought it in both colors and a similar version called the Merino wool sweater blazer with buttons. They are very similar and incredibly flattering. The collars pop nicely on both to change up the look. Be warned that they both run big. I am normally a Medium and I purchased an extra-small in both blazers. Buy them before they sell out!!!

  13. Lauren DeMarco says...

This model is everything! Especially love the 2nd look!

  14. Leslie says...

Flirty and fun,yet classy, comfortable and sophisticated style. Love the white shirt, black trousers, camel sweater and flats !
This model is absolutely STUNNING !!

  15. Leslie says...

Great flirty looks ! Comfortable, yet fun and sophisticated.
The model is absolutely STUNNING !!

  16. Katharina says...

I love the last look. Those trousers!

I’d like to wear jeans or similar trousers for that matter. I’m also getting used to the Mum-Jeans look.
But – and this is a serious question – I don’t know how to wear them. How to sit down wearing a jeans.

I’ve never had a flat stomach in my life. But after three pregnancies and being a no-sports-type there is this big flabby belly. Sometimes I look pregnant enough for people to offer me a seat in the subway (well, at least that happend once).

So I’m all tights and dresses on colder days.

Still not complaining. Just honestly wondering: any tips on what jeans/trousers to wear if you’re on the rounder side of body types?

    • Sasha says...

I hear you! I don’t think higher waisted pants are flattering if you have a tummy, maybe others have figured this out and disagree? ?

I think dresses and tights or leggings are a brilliant way to go, and maybe more comfortable too.

The one pair of jeans I have that look cute AND are comfy, no matter position, are Lola. They have stretch that doesn’t stretch out, even with multiple wearings, and a wide yoga pants type waistband that lies flat, and hugs without pinching, and they are not too high waisted.

Personally, I can’t wait for the mom jeans look to please go away again. It’s not flattering for lots of body types. I will laugh hard though, if it comes back for men! !!

    • Sarah says...

I have a tummy and I actually prefer high waist pants because they create a smoother waistline for me. The low-rise pants of the 90’s when I was a teen were always falling off and mid rise hits me right in the soft part of my waist and create lines I don’t like much. I like them with longer, untucked tops myself, and choose the ones that have a bit of stretch for comfort when sitting!

    • Jennifer says...

Hi! I just had 2 babies in 2 years so I get the tummy problem. I’ve been living in these pants from Everlane (https://www.everlane.com/products/womens-stretch-ponte-crop-pant-black?collection=womens-bottoms) paired with this turtleneck (https://www.everlane.com/products/womens-luxe-wool-square-ttlnk-black?collection=womens-sweaters) and it’s definitely become my go-to uniform. The pants have a high waist that creates seamless lines and are comfortable enough to crawl around on the floor or chase after toddlers. They feel like leggings but look like pants. The turtleneck has a perfect swingy bottom (read: not clingy on your belly) but when paired with the same color (black on black) creates a visual line from your neck all the way down to your ankles. Very chic without being fussy. I pair with black ballet flats, heels or boots depending on where I’m going and will layer with a trench or wool coat when it gets colder.

  17. Christina says...

Gorgeous model, love the camel sweater blazer & outfit!

  18. Natalie T. says...

    Love your model!
All outfits on point though realistically, I’d wear outfit 2 and the top from 3 (which is my uniform all day every day and of course, it’s from JCrew!)

  19. valentina says...

thank you for using a woman of color to model! love seeing more and more diversity on your site lately :)

    • becklesnwu says...

      What she said!

    • A says...

Great choice of model & she is so beautiful she stops these clothes from looking overly preppy.

  20. Vicki says...

    I need cooler hair. :)

  21. Amy says...

They second outfit is perfection. I’d wear that to work all. The. Time.

  22. Liesl says...

I bought the leopard print flats a few weeks ago and absolutely love them. I was looking for an everyday fall shoe and after not finding a neutral I was happy with, did these instead and proudly wear them with most everything!

  23. Katie. H says...

Beautiful model. Beautiful outfits. Love every one.

  24. emmanuella says...

… and if you don’t have awesome dreads or braids, you’ll have to add some jewelry to give the look more texture if you want to look as good as this model. ;)

  25. Ramona says...

After summer, autumn is my next favorite season. I like to transition with a quilted zip vest. Sometimes I wear a soft plaid shirt with it, sometimes a long sleeve tee. Usually I wear jeans (boyfriend, distressed or dark blue) with booties but I can also change it up with khakis and chucks. I know, this sounds way too laid-back but I’m all about comfort.

  26. I LOVE that quilted jacket on the Jo, although I think it would feel to “bright” on me. I’m still stuck on the overalls trend from last year! So comfy cozy.

  27. Such a lovely model!

  28. Liz says...

    The model is so beautiful!!

  29. AJ says...

Love all of these. Autumn – or fall :) – is the most exciting season for dressing!

  30. Ok just ordered the camel sweater blazer… I have a black soft lyocell blazer I have worn so many times for the last five years so feel like I can justify this as I know I can use this in my wardrobe! My go-to is definitely a crew neck merino sweater, I have a few favourites but uniqlo do a great line (I always size up), and Marks and Spencer in the UK is also a great crew neck sweater spot. Almost makes up for the sunshine slowly disappearing… almost.

  31. Julia says...

Man, I have been needing some outfit inspiration lately and this post was so timely! Love everything! As a PSA…there is a similar sweater blazer on factory.jcrew.com and from the reviews, people seem to prefer it to the merino wool version pictured :)

  32. Annelise says...

Wow- beautiful. What is the lip color the model is wearing? Love it!

  33. I have that sweater blazer and it’s an absolute delight. I’ve been trying hard to not wear it everyday. 100% marino wool and makes you look so sharp!

  34. aga says...

    Girl crush <3

  35. Mel says...

Your model is GORGEOUS! And it is lovely to see the celebration of many kinds of women in Cup of Jo :)

  36. Teresa says...

Black mock ribbed tank top from the Gap with skinny jeans

  37. Maggie says...

This woman is STUNNING. And a dead ringer for FKA Twigs.

  38. sc says...

oh my GOD the model is GORGEOUS <3 love every outfit and her hair!!!

  39. Cynthia says...

I really like the last outfit, as I’m drawn to the orange pants. I looked at them on line at J.Crew and while they are available in a khaki color, the orange really makes the style standout. Plus there is no waistband, just a faced waist which I find comfortable. I just bought a cardigan similar to the one in the middle outfit, so now I have a way to style it. The cardigan would look good with a slim black skirt. I really don’t have a fall uniform as I just wear a variety of styles and colors.

    • Stella Blackmon says...

Hi Cynthia! The wide-leg chinos are still available in the orange! It’s called “warm chimney” — hope that helps! xo

  40. Sally says...

Love all the looks. She is stunning as well.

  41. Kristina says...

Okay now I have to get some wide leg pants! I’ve been hesitating because I know I’ll only wear them with flats, but seeing how great they look on Jo with those loafers–I’m convinced!

  42. Anon says...

Ladies, let me ask on behalf of all of you..Can you ID her lipstick please!:)

Yey for All these practical easy outfit ideas ..well except for orange pants ;)

    • Stella Blackmon says...

Just asked! I’ll let you know :)

    • Stella Blackmon says...

Hi! It’s Sephora Rogue Cream Lipstick in Hot Tango http://bit.ly/2xZm5nZ

      Hope this helps!
      Stella xoxo

    • Yes! I love the lipstick yoo!

  43. Maire says...

The green field jacket is definitely a wardrobe staple + jersey swing dress + plaid scarf + cowboy boots. Tights if it is chilly out!

  44. Those orange pants are cute, but not on my thighs!! I think you have to be over 5’7″ to pull those bad boys out. I’m just so excited to wear mostly black, tan and denim without apologizing for it!

    • Celeste Muller says...

I thought the same thing but completely changed my mind! I’m 5’4 and bottom heavy, with my thighs being my largest (and most hated) body part. On a whim, I bought some wide leg pants online and was super nervous about trying them on. Long story short, I freaking love them! I’ve worn them a few times and received multiple compliments every time I’ve worn them. Not only are they super comfy but they look so chic and cool. I’m so glad I went out of my comfort zone and tried these pants!

    • Beth says...

I agree with Celeste–I am short (5′ 2″), and on the curvy side, but I bought a pair of white wide legged pants this summer and they were my favs! Every time I wore them, I got compliments, and my son said I had “swag!” Anymore, I don’t listen to what I should wear for my height and size and I wear what I like and feel good in. I bought a pair of wide legged jeans too!

  45. Amy says...

I love this sweater blazer. I bought it using the 30% off a couple of weeks ago and it’s a great staple! Goes well over a dress or for weekend with jeans and loafers. Great post and beautiful model!

  46. Tashy says...

I want every single piece on this page <3 Also, this model 4 ever.

  47. Maywyn says...

Great outfits. The wide leg pants feel fancy and comfortable in winter with a pair of thick tights underneath.
For me…Denim, long plaid flannel shirt, hunter green, cinnamon, ecru hand-knit style big stitches sweater and cardigan, red Nordic pattern, fun print umbrella, flowing tunics in old man pajama patterns, and, black boots, and saddle tan leather boots or oxfords.

  48. Em says...

My go-to is usually a silky blouse tucked into high-waisted jeans, paired with flat ankle boots. Or a big oversized sweater and tight jeans or leggings, also paired with boots. (I like boots.)

This fall, though, I’d really like to try out a dress/skirt with tights combo. I think it looks so sexy, especially when paired with a long coat.

    • Katie says...

You just described my exact fall/winter uniform! This year I’m hoping to switch it up with more straight/wide leg pants, and also try to get my tan tall leather boots back in rotation. Not sure how I’m going to work that without looking too dated, but mine are beautiful and I miss them!

  49. Lily says...

    Jo is gorgeous!

  50. Agnes says...

My fall / winter uniform has been skinny jeans / pants and some kind of (usually) cashmere on top. Flats if it’s warmer, knee or ankle boots if not. Let’s be honest, probably spring and summers too but with lighter tops. That has been ME for probably the last 10 years!! I’m ready for a change!!

  51. THESE LOOKS <3 <3 Just pinned all three :) Thanks!

  52. I am currently rocking a five month baby belly and working to figure out what I already own that will work, and where my gaps will be this fall/winter. Currently crushing so hard on the Madewell sweater you linked to Friday :)

    • I’m in the same boat as you! Some of my clothes still “fit” . . . but we’re pushing it. Or, rather, my bump is pushing it. ;-)

I saw that Madewell sweater posted on a few weekend posts around the blogosphere. I may have immediately ordered it and called it a birthday present to myself, since my birthday was on Sunday!

    • Grace Meng says...

I’m six months pregnant and got the sweater blazer to wear with the usual ruched maternity dress — makes it look a little more professional but it’s cozy and comfortable!

    • Lisa says...

I’m in the third trimester, and my uniform can be described as “it fits and looks vaguely clean”
This is my second pregnancy, and last time round I found that cardigans were good, as they fit during and after pregnancy. I was actually looking at that j crew cardigan jacket today, as I want a long cosy oversized cardigan to wear this winter, and that one has the advantage of looking quite smart as well

  53. Hannah says...

I just bought that open-front sweater-blazer last week and it is SO comfortable. Will surely be in my rotation this fall and winter. For reference, I am 130ish, 5’4 and got a small. It’s oversized so size down if you are concerned about it being too big.

  54. Alex says...

Omg I love your model! She’s so beautiful and it’s her who really “makes” all of these outfits :)

    • Meghan Edwards says...

      ditto!

  55. Susan says...

So cute! Can’t wait to wear sweaters and scarves! Here is Southern California we’re still sweltering… 🌞

  56. Jo is stunning! (beauty uniform, plz?!) I am taking notes on look #2 while literally wearing look #1 haha

    • Robin says...

      Yes beauty uniform please x2!

  57. Katherine says...

    That sweater blazer 😍😍😍

  58. CJ says...

Love the last look- so pretty with the pop of color. I feel like the Fall can be very drabby with brown and black but I’m ready to add some color in!!! The model is stunning and I love how she looks in these pics.

  59. Katie says...

Love these looks, especially the stripes with wide leg pants. I’m slightly over obsessed with that pant style at the moment.

Question: where is the model’s necklace from? It’s lovely (As is everything else about her).

  60. I love all these looks. They look so comfortable, cozy, but still has the professional look

  61. A says...

The camel sweater, white shirt, and black trousers is absolutely my fall uniform. Year-round, really. I love your posts about uniforms!

  62. Anamaria says...

What lipstick is she wearing in the first photo? She looks gorgeous!

    • Yes. I’m so curious about the bright lipstick! What is it?

    • Stella Blackmon says...

      Hi Shila!

It’s Sephora Rogue Cream Lipstick in Hot Tango http://bit.ly/2xZm5nZ

      Hope this helps! xoxo

    • Stella Blackmon says...

      Hi Anamaria!

It’s Sephora Rogue Cream Lipstick in Hot Tango http://bit.ly/2xZm5nZ

      Stella xoxo

    • Anamaria says...

      Thank you!!

  63. Kim L says...

Jo is gorgeous, and the clothes are so beautiful. I have been eyeing that sweater blazer for a few weeks now….

  64. Celeste says...

I love love love these looks! Also, I’m really digging the model’s ultra-long braids with these classic looks. So gorgeous! <3

  65. d says...

She looks great in the clothes- however how about us not tall/thin types?

  66. Elle says...

I can’t wait for turtleneck weather! The St. James mariner striped turtlenecks are hefty, with tall necks that stay put, so I hope J. Crew will have new ones for fall. I’ve already sprung for a beautiful Liberty floral shirt to layer over tees in cooler weather.

  67. Lucy says...

I was wearing this shirt yesterday and wondering whether I could wear leopard-print flats with it. I guess the answer is yes!

  68. I recently gained so much weight and almost all of it went to my thighs so wide leg trousers are my new fave and the orange one is just lovely!

    • d says...

really? I always assume they’ll make me look even more bottom heavy

    • Celeste Muller says...

I just commented about this further up! I’m bottom heavy as well and never thought wide legged pants would suite me but I was so wrong! They are so flattering, comfy and cool. I highly recommend them!

  69. Ingrid says...

Oh, to be young again! (And thin again;-)

  70. I love horizontal stripes in navy/maroon/hunter green for fall. i’m also loving the wide leg trend.

    xo

  71. Sharon says...

A denim shirt with denim pants is what we call up north a “Canadian tuxedo”. But we don’t mind if you guys do it too! You can either try to match the denim, as you’ve done here, or else you have to go totally different. Here’s the most Canadian thing you ever saw – – Justin Trudeau at a Tragically Hip concert, in a Canadian tuxedo. Jenna Lyons eat your heart out. http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2016/08/21/justin-trudeau-rocked-the_n_11641314.html?utm_hp_ref=ca-canadian-tuxedo

    • Emily R says...

We call it that down here too, have no fear!

    • Kelly says...

Awesome! I’m a Canuck and hadn’t seen this.

    • E says...

Ha, here in Texas we call it a Texas tuxedo!

  72. jac says...

I love these clothes and I love this model and I love these clothes on this model. <3

  73. Elizabeth says...

World’s cutest model – I want that little green jacket!
