Have a Lovely Weekend.

pizza by christine han

What are you up to this weekend? We’re having friends over for dinner, and they’re bringing churros and chocolate for dessert. (Score.) Hope you have a good one, and here are a few fun links from around the web…

Have you seen Hustlers? I’ve heard great things and am seeing it tonight.

A supercut of Alex Trebek saying genre, haha.

What a lovely wedding cake!

Would you wear blue eyeshadow?

For school mornings, I’ve been making these easy frittatas in muffin tins ahead of time for Toby and Anton to have for breakfast. They’re delicious for afternoon snacks, too.

I am “why do I need Venmo?” years old. Made me laugh.

What a beautiful candle.

Found! The fastest way to board an airplane.

How to make work trips a little easier. “Send selfie videos. Because your kids – and your spouse – miss you. And a five-second video of you standing on the airport’s moving walkway while making silly faces will delight them infinitely more than a photo or phone call will.”

America’s 10 best new restaurants. (The photos look so delicious.)

Also, what do you like to wear to work? We’re writing a post about what our readers wear to work and we’d love to hear from you. If you’d like, please send your look to kim@cupofjo.com. Please include a photo, where you live and a couple sentences about your work style. xoxo

Plus, two reader comments:

Says Alice on 12 questions to ask your significant other at dinner: we recently instated a date rule that if we want to talk about work, we have to touch our nose the whole time. Just goofy and annoying enough to encourage us talk about the truly important things, like:
– if you had to eat the same meal once a day every day, what would it be?
– what movie could you happily watch once a week for the rest of your life?
and, if you’re feeling brave, the nearly marriage-ending
– what is closer to a fry, a sweet potato fry or a tater tot?”

Says Emma on burning questions about food: “To take care of food waste, we have ‘Tiny Bites’ once a week. The idea is a plate full of any leftovers. Favorites include: halved meatballs, three carrot sticks, a dollop of hummus, apple slices, a pile of peas, cubed cheese, raisins no one ate from their lunch, yogurt with leftover herbs, bits of chips from the bottom of the bag… Arrange it all together on a plate and it even looks a little fancy.”

I am posting this with love and respect and only the best intentions of constructive criticism, as I LOVE cup of Jo and want it to be its best and truest self! I am thrilled cofJ is examining the climate crisis. One easy and quick change to make is to stop recommending recipes that focus/promote the use of animal products. Instead, choose whole foods plant based recipes (of which there are so many gorgeous and delicious ones that need attention!) I feel the cookbook/food channel world is already saturated with recipes that rely on processed flour, sugar, eggs, butter, dairy, etc.

    • Lin says...

I already feel that Cup of Jo is “it’s best and truest self”. My family and I enjoy meat as part of our weekly dinners, and I appreciate the current take on cooking offered on this site! I live in one of the largest cattle producing states and feel like Cup of Jo always speaks to a wide variety of readers, farmers and ranchers, too

    • Second this! Starting small is fine, too, like just cutting out meat. I feel like people are terrified of the word “vegan,” or just really like to ridicule it, but cutting out, or cutting significantly back on, beef, is one of the most important things we can do to address climate change.

  2. Lauren says...

Would love a headsup on nymag articles, only a certain # per month before you hit the paywall! (similar to what you do for nytimes)

  3. Li says...

Can’t wait for the “what to wear to work” post. I highly recommend Modern Citizen for tops and dresses! Have had no luck with pants, but find that the tops/dresses look super luxe but are way more reasonably priced than other options.

  4. HeatherD says...

I get the feel that most of the audience here is old enough to need a primer on modern techy stuff like venmo and tiktok, both things I had to google!

  5. Last year I went on a girls trip to NYC with my mom, two sisters and sister in law. We split the hotel cost and I told everyone before hand they could PayPal, Venmo or Cash App me. Or bring check or cash. My mom brought a money order ;-)

  6. Ob says...

    Lovely candle :)
I’d rather not burn it (might look terrible once you use half of it). Just a thought…

I hope someone from the airplane companies around the world watches this video – it could save millions of hours of our own lives, not to mention fuel (we are embarked while the plane engine is already started)

  7. Hannah says...

Every fall, I teach the “airline boarding” problem in my optimization course. Always a sure hit! BTW, it’s impossible to execute the optimal answer because of guaranteed boarding groups for airline cards, airlines selling priority boarding, etc.

    • Sasha J says...

Just wanted to say I’m currently working through a ton of optimization homework and I’m glad you teach an applicable problem! Our prof goes to theoretical proofs and it’s… less than compelling ;)

Ladies in STEM! (I assume.) Cheers, internet neighbor!

  8. jrg says...

if you like the boarding plane video check out the guy’s whole youtube channel – he doesn’t awesome videos on things you never really think about (who owns the statue of liberty is a good one!) and they’re so entertaining.

    • jrg says...

      oops *does awesome videos! haha

  9. Martha says...

Jennifer Lopez in Hustlers saying “Come into my fur” is my new friendship motto. May we should all just envelop anyone who is struggling in our giant coat of (legal) comfort.

  10. Susan says...

I love this list! I work from home but I like to dress like it’s a workday still. Maybe some notes on that would be helpful. I have to get dressed to feel human! I also love when you pull reader comments. It might be my favorite part of your Friday posts. Xo

  11. Anna says...

For the frittata: a delicious egg-free version can be made by replacing the eggs with chickpea flour, which results in a similar spongy texture and golden colour. (Vegan if you skip the feta)

  12. Sarah says...

Did anyone else think Hustlers was horrible?? It was somewhat entertaining at first but the way the story was pieced together was so disorganized. I am honestly surprised to hear that people loved it so much and am wondering if I am the only one thinking this!

    • Cady says...

It was dreadful. I cannot understand all the positive buzz (and reviews!). Bad writing, horrible direction. Not the least bit empowering or even fun.

    • Kathy says...

You are not! Our whole group of girlfriends went to watch it and we were so disappointed. The story was told very poorly and the characters were so underdeveloped. We were baffled by the reviews. We WANTED to like it because of the awesome cast, the female director, the story about how the women had to fight to get it made, but in the end it just wasn’t good. I can’t understand the reviews myself.

    • Marney says...

Hi! I think maybe because I had read the long-form article it was based on, I maybe wasn’t that entertained? Especially knowing that the ladies weren’t really close friends in real life.

I did think that Jennifer and Constance gave knock-out performances. Otherwise, it felt long and unnecessary.

  13. Gwen says...

Re “genre”, is this a Canadian vs American thing? I watched the video and thought it was the most bizarre thing – someone repeatedly saying a word totally normally. How would Americans pronounce this word?

    • Joaquina says...

Americans would typically pronounce it as “dzon ruh” (or “JOHN ruh”) vs someone like Trebec with knowledge of French pronunciation.
So Americans would not have any nasality nor glottal “re” in the word.

    • Fay says...

He’s using a french-based pronunciation (as he does with all remotely-french words) that sounds strange to American ears. We generally pronounce the word in two syllables: JHAN-ruh. LIke the contestant says it at the very beginning of the clip.

    • Sasha L says...

In Montana we say “jaune-ra” not the French pronunciation at all. I’m guessing from my long ago and not very good French, that Alex is saying it exactly right, just funny to American ears that don’t pronounce it correctly.

    • Molly K says...

      ZHAWN-ruh

    • Kristin says...

I’m guessing it’s more of a fluent in French vs. not fluent thing. Most people I know say jhan-ra. I don’t know how to show the g/j sound properly, so that’s my best stab at it!

    • Rachel says...

Americans say it with more of a two-syllable feel by pronouncing the “n.” The Canadian way is definitely more French-inspired!

    • celeste says...

Oh interesting! We say “john-rah.” Sure enough, if you Google, Trebek is Canadian!

  14. shannon says...

Yikes, I’m ergonomic backpack + bathroom renovation porn years old (which is 29 apparently?!?).

  15. Amy says...

I am “had to google what Venmo is” years old…aka 32.

  16. On the selfie videos, we LOVE Marco Polo, a video chat app. It keeps all your videos together in a stream like a walkie-talkie. It also takes the pressure off talking “live” in FaceTime. Oh, and there are cute filters you can put on your voice. My three-year-old loves to hear her voice go all squeaky with the Helium setting.

  17. Tracie M. says...

My husband travels for work and several years ago he started doing a video hotel room tour, to show our children where he was staying and what his room looked like. This has become a tradition and even though they are 13 and 15 years old, they still love these little glimpses into his travel. It also helps when they miss him.

    • Angela says...

My kids request the same thing and they are 4. I’m sure I look strange saying, “and here is the pool, and here is the restaurant” etc, but it makes them so happy to know where I’m staying when I’m away from them. I also do it in the plane when I board and in airports too. They haven’t flown yet, so maybe once we do it will be demystified.

  18. Chrissie says...

Re: the candle. Daaaang I wish my nipples were that high.

    • Heather D says...

This is the best comment ever

  19. Would recommend the app “Marco Polo” for sending video messages to loved one. It doesn’t take up space on your camera roll! Don’t worry, it is not social media.

I am definitely “What is TikTok?” years old. xo.

  20. Kristina says...

We also do a variation on Tiny Bites! Except we call it “Weekday Tapas” 🙃

  21. Kara says...

Yes, why DO I need Venmo?!? 😂 Made me laugh. I look forward to this post every week.

    • Lia says...

Omg Venmo is the best. Donate cashlessly for work gifts even if you are remote…split a dinner bill with friends by venmoing your share…I am using it so much these days and I love it. And I’m in my thirties!

  22. Cate says...

This list sometimes feels like a bonkers mind meld…I randomly stumbled upon that candle a couple of days ago, fell head over heels for it, and immediately put it on my wishlist! As always, these links are real highlights of the week.

  23. Abesha1 says...

Re: the egg “muffins…” I love a good egg bite, and that’s what these are. There’s nothing remotely related to a muffin here. The unappealing “spongey” texture is unavoidable unless you add something creamy, because it’s just a baked, beaten egg at this point. Since there’s already dairy if you add cheese, might as well add some milk, or soft creamy cheese (rumor has it that Starbucks uses cottage cheese in theirs.) And 2 eggs per serving (author says she eats 2 “muffins” as a breakfast) , when eaten regularly, is a lot of egg.

I guess I’m saying, nice idea, but needs some work. I generally use animal dairy products, but I’d be happy to hear suggestions from anyone who has experience with other white creamy liquids (mylk?) such as soy, oat, almond, etc. or vegan cheeses.

    • cg says...

“…nice idea, but needs some work.”

Wow, really? The tone I’m getting from this comment is snarky and demeaning. I would like to believe that the majority, if not all, of The COJ readers understand that egg muffins aren’t technically muffins with flour in them, just as a hamburger doesn’t have any ham in it. But what took it over the edge is telling someone that their recipe needs some work just because you don’t like “spongey” textures. One person’s recipe is simply that, one person’s recipe. No need to take a tone about it, offer your suggestion in a constructive way, or just leave it alone.
      Sheesh.

  24. Sara C. says...

Yes, Emma! We call this smorgasbord, said with a ridiculous accent. It’s the best (and so easy!)

  25. Melissa says...

I am “what is venmo?” years old.
I just had to google what it is 😆

  26. Sara B says...

I am looking forward to the piece on what people wear to work! I need suggestions for winter. I prefer dresses and skirts over pants, but every day is dress-leggings-booties-cardigan. It gets a little boring

  27. Meredith says...

I have to say, I am “What is Venmo?” years old 🙃 I just had to Google it!

  28. Sarah says...

What are the carbon impacts of flying? Would love to see lifestyle sites talk about alternatives to flying. We have 10 years to reduce our carbon emissions by 50%. Flying is terrible for our future.

  29. Leah says...

I am definitely “super into dogs and clogs” years old. Haha!

  30. Lorraine says...

I just went on a 6-day work trip, and decided to do lunchbox notes to my son as a new treat – after reading the school jitters article. He was so surprised and delighted – needless to say, they were a big hit. I don’t think I could commit to doing the notes all the time, so saving them for a work trip was perfect.

  31. june2 says...

Hustler’s reminds me of the excellent Molly’s Game, with Jessica Chastain.
That wedding cake is gorgeous and so is her dress – especially with sneakers after the wedding!

  32. Rhey says...

I am “what is Venmo?” Years old…

  33. Mb says...

Omg that candle looks like the torso sculpture from Fleabag!!!

    • Lorraine says...

      I thought the same thing!

    • I had the same thought!!

    • Stacey says...

I hadn’t clicked on the candle link, but as soon as I saw this comment I clicked through as fast as I could! Fleabag forever!

  34. MJ says...

Loved Hustlers. J. Lo gives the performance of a lifetime. Her body alone deserves the Nobel Peace Prize.

    • Jessica says...

I also loved Hustlers! I could watch J. Lo dance to “Criminal” on repeat. Truly a Nobel level achievement!

    • AJ says...

Hahaha! Defo, loved the movie, she is awesome, what a woman!

  35. Christy says...

Selfie videos are an awesome idea!! Before my husband travels for work, he records himself reading bedtime books for each night that he’s away. The kids love them, and it means I get a little break in the chaos that is solo bedtime with 3 kids under 4.

    • Perla says...

How thoughtful ! What a precious thing to do as a dad !

  36. Annie K says...

I want to get that candle in honor of Fleabag…and never burn it…and ultimately have a passive aggressive family member steal it.

  37. celeste says...

Going to try those frittatas and I couldn’t live without Venmo, hahaha. Very easy to get reimbursed for group concert tickets that way!

  38. perla says...

this weekend i am thinking of having a ” reset day ” . things have been tough lately !

being a big foodie , it will involve grocery shopping , lots of late night cooking , endless lists of podcasts , a sentimental movie that would make me cry all my tears and a long walk . autumn leaves are here , i HAVE to go on a walk .

    have a lovely weekend cup-of-jo-community !

    • Jen says...

This sounds like a perfect reset!

    • Sama says...

I LOVE this. Know that I’m copying your idea and sending you a big hug.

  39. Riley says...

Have you heard Alex Trebeck say “sophomore”? 😂
