Jo, I’m just curious…why do you shop at fast fashion places like J.Crew, Banana Republic, etc. if you have the income to shop at more sustainable places? Genuinely just wondering – like if you love the clothes, etc. TY <3

I’d love to plug a cotton scarf for every trip! My carry on is pretty much the same as yours Joanna when I travel to Finland for three weeks every summer to visit my family. I do make sure I have a good hat for those sunny days on the water. Running shoes are a must. And my HRT 😜

I”m headed to France this summer and will be traveling on the train a fair amount, so I will only pack a carry on. I always bring {in addition to what I wear on the plane} three pair of black linen pants, three flowered {so the dirt doesn’t show} sleeveless T-shirts, one thin cotton nightgown, one long sleeved black gauze shirt for the plane, four pairs of underwear, a pair of house shoes, and compression stockings, which make walking hours every day almost bearable. That’s it. I only bring one pair of walking shoes. I stay in Airbnb’s that have washing machines available and just do my laundry a lot.

I love these posts! Last month our family took a vacation to Ireland, and next week I’m chaperoning on a trip to New Zealand and Australia. I’ve been packing with the top-bottom-layer concept, three of each with several thoughtful additions (like a dress, a vest, etc.) and trying to keep it all coordinated to maximize my wardrobe options.

I have a question for those who’ve traveled in Australia and New Zealand. I’m trying to decide between my 40L backpack and my standard 21″ carry-on wheelie suitcase. We’re in Auckland for one night, then 2 in Rotorua, flying to Sydney for 3 nights, then 3 nights in Cairns. What’s the better option? So grateful for this community and hoping you all can help me decide!

Oh also- I think back pockets would look even nicer (what’s the deal with the cost-saving no back pockets – so 90s not in the best way! – on high price point pants these days?) but up to you as long as the 🍑 of the pants looks nice!

Three weeks, good for you! My husband and I were just having the conversation that more than a one-week vacation in America is hard to swing. Ya’ll enjoy.

I’m a huge button down fan, so I pack three high quality poplin button downs, a couple a cotton tank tops, a few white tees from Power of My People (these are my one guilty splurge but so worth it), two pair jeans, a pair of linen trousers, and two pair sandals. The zhuzh come from my accessories. If I know there will be a something a bit more upscale, I pack the NRBY collared linen kaftan.

Would love to know what your boys are packing for the trip! We are doing a lot of vacation prep for Europe and would love tips for kiddos. :)

I love your packing lists so much!

My dad has a sailboat, and his only rule is: “only backpacks allowed on board”. This, plus the luggage policies of low cost airlines in Europe (additional fees for carry-on suitcases), has taught me to travel with only a backpack. My packing technique is as follows: 7 items of thing I can only wear once before it needs to be washed (underwear, t-shirt), so I have a week ahead of me before I have to think about laundry, one sweater and a pair of pants (which I usually wear in the plane), 2 pair of shorts, and the rest is optional depending on where I’m going – swimsuit, hat, dress… and a minimal skincare routine that fits in those small ziplock airport bags. My husband and our two kids each have their own backpacks. This has worked for us many times, no matter the season (I just switch my shorts for more pair of pants if needed, and also, there’s always more room left in my kids’ backpacks because tiny clothes, so I can put more stuff in there).

Just back from three weeks in England and Germany with a carryon. We got caught by the heat dome over England and everyday I wore my cotton dress and every night I washed it in the sink-so hot and sweaty! It was a dress from J McLaughlin and it was fantastic! I just want to give them a shout out because other than that dress I really had nothing suitable having packed for a cool rainy English spring. My advice to everyone travelling this summer is to be sure and pack for extreme heat!

I made some choices this summer which I may or may not regret…but I have 3.5 weeks of travel which will include work meetings, ice hockey, beaches, and hiking. Packing will be fun!

I can pack a very light wardrobe, my problem is the fun bag: books (at least 3), notebooks (travel, dreams, drawing), pen and ink, embroidery stuff, writing pad envelopes and stamps, a deck of cards, dice. I have tried. So I reduce the clothing even more, I don’t care. I will take Martyr! By Kaveh Akbar, Beautiful world where are you by Sally Rooney and probably a short Dostoyevsky. I want to know what about sleepwear? or whatever you wear in the morning when you are greeting the day with a leisurely cup of coffee, feeling mellow, not yet ready for clothes, and there are a bunch of people around. And what to have on one’s feet when not out tromping around on adventures. lounging around, post dinner, pre-snooze? Probably not slippers, but if my feet are not happy then I am not happy. Therefore I always bring a pair of cushy socks solely for before bed/morning time. (going down rabbit holes like this are exactly why packing stresses me out)
