5 Huge Summer Sales

Four Big Summer Sales

Today, five of our favorite brands are holding their big summer sales — including J. Crew, Madewell, Barnes and Noble, Babaà and Nordstrom. (Side note: My all-time favorite sweater is on sale!!!) A few readers asked us to share picks, so here are a few forever favorites…

Thoughts? (I’ve also heard the BEST things about these.)

P.S. Women share their go-to pants for work, and my trusty packing list.

As far as I can tell, the Nordstrom sale is currently only accessible for those with Nordstrom cards.

I want to thank you for being so engaged/thoughtful with your posts, and hearing the concerns about Amazon/Prime Day from years past. I know that it’s probably a tricky thing to weigh, especially when people might not notice when you choose to be exempt from something. Just want to say thank you and I notice the switch!! <3

Love your blog, perhaps a companion post on those in the community choosing not to buy or buy less. Thanks :)

    • Kathy says...

I enjoy this blog too, but this strikes me as a sponsored post—promoting specific brands?

I feel you. Trying not to get annoyed by the frequent buying habits of everyone around me and rediscover all the amazing things already in my closet this summer. To refresh my standby outfits I’ve done a few things.

-pair unexpected colors and prints together (red and pink is a fun combination)
-borrow an item from your spouse/brother/dad/mom
-embrace some of your more utilitarian gear as fashion pieces (Tevas, a promotional baseball cap, a rain parka, whatever)
-if you really need a shopping fix, donate some of your stale clothing and buy second-hand.

    • Sasha L says...

      Diana, I love your suggestions.

One more- adopting any sort of uniform really helps limit purchases. If it doesn’t fit with your *uniform* you don’t buy.

    • Katie says...

Yes, i’d love to see a regular post about their affordable second-hand finds. My closet is fully second hand with the exception of some pants and really old purchases. Poshmark is a great resource for shopping, but I’d like to see styling tips and shopping tips for not-necessarily-current, but classic second-hand pieces.
      Here are mine,
-On poshmark, like something and wait, the seller will eventually lower the price.
      -Know your measurements!
-Shop by brand…I know what fits me in madewell, and it’s a great brand for basics.
-Factor tailoring into your overall cost before you buy…just shortened two maxi skirts and a very long banana republic button up, and turned a shift dress into a shell top…WORTH IT
-I’ve found that LOFT has a lot of structured pieces in knit and jacquard fabrics that are in really good shape after being owned and worn by several people.
      -cashmere for less than $30!

Ooh thanks for making those J. Crew leopard flats one of your selections!! I have been in the market for a cute pair, and this deal/price was just the nudge I needed :) My size is backordered until November but I’ll still get them just in time for some cute fall outfits!!

    • Emily says...

Did you notice that they called the color “rich mahogany?” Totally made me think of Ron Burgandy!!! Love it!

    • Amanda says...

Emily – I notice it now! So thanks for the laugh :) I was thinking that it was a weird color name…just watch, I’ll end up getting solid brown (I mean “rich mahogany”) shoes haha.

    • Beth says...

Thank you for posting this Kristin!! This just inspired me to snag one for a wedding I have in a few weeks and have been striking out while trying to find a dress I liked. Sorry your size isn’t in but maybe you’ll like this similar one that’s also on the sale? (spoiler I bought both to compare)

    • Kristin says...

Yeah, Beth! I was hoping someone would buy it :) You are going to look gorgeous! I do like that other one too but the neckline on the first really does it for me.

    • Kristin says...

My size is back in stock! Yessssss

    • Beth says...

Yay glad it was restocked for you. Virtual high five to looking good and 90s!

  5. I love the sale selection at Madewell right now! Plus, you get an extra 30% off!

  6. Katie says...

Thank you for not including Amazon!!!!

    • Bridgette says...

      Yes yes yes

  7. Alexia says...

I hate to be *that person* but I’m wondering what happened to Motherhood Around the World. Quite possibly my favorite thing on the Internet :)

    • Joanna Goddard says...

hi alexia, thank you so much for your note! we featured six motherhood around the world posts every summer for six years, but this year because of some staff changes (stella moved the photo department of new york magazine, and caroline is working 3 days a week, and so we are lightly staffed right now), it felt like we needed to focus on other posts and projects instead of doing such a big reporting endeavor. so we’re skipping this summer, but we’ll be back in full force next summer! thank you again for your sweet note.

    • AG says...

I am not a mother but I love this series, too! So comforting to learn how the other side of the world tackles the bigs and smalls of life.

    • Alexa says...

Have been wondering the same!! Such a bummer that they are going in a different direction this year.😭

    • Sara says...

Is Franny still writing for Cup of Jo? I can’t remember seeing her name in a while!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

thanks for your note! franny moved on from Cup of Jo, and we wish her the very best! i’ll do a staff update soon xoxo
