Five-Ingredient Trader Joe’s Tacos

Five-Ingredient Trader Joe's Tacos

Next up in our month of Trader Joe’s hacks are these coconut shrimp tacos. Our friend Linsey made them for a girls’ dinner this winter, and they were so delicious. Bonus: “I can pretend we’re on a sunny beach somewhere,” she says, “instead of having yet another nor’easter.” Here’s how she does it…

Five-Ingredient Trader Joe's Tacos

Recipe: Coconut Shrimp Tacos
Makes 5 tacos

You’ll need:

TJ Coconut Shrimp
TJ Shredded Green & Red Cabbage
TJ Green Goddess Salad Dressing
TJ Flour Tortillas
TJ Island Salsa (Linsey makes her own, but this one’s good!)

Optional:
Sliced avocado
Lime
Cilantro

Bake the coconut shrimp according to instructions. Remove tails. Toss cabbage slaw with Green Goddess dressing. In a warmed tortilla, add two or three shrimp, a sprinkle of the dressed slaw and a scoop of salsa. If you’d like, you can also add two slices of avocado, a squeeze of lime and a few leaves of cilantro.

Five-Ingredient Trader Joe's Tacos

Thanks for the idea, Linsey! Have you ever tried these shrimp?

P.S. More Trader Joe’s hacks, including delicious breakfast and a slamdunk family dinner.
P.P.S. This series isn’t sponsored, we just love TJ’s!

  1. Lauren says...

I’m dairy free and live just down the street from Trader Joes so this could not be more perfect!! Yum – thanks!

  2. Annie says...

I made these last night and they were SO good. Thank you so much for this quick weeknight solution!

  3. Lauren says...

Yum! I make a very similar TJs hack recipe almost weekly (only a little embarrassing) but instead of coconut shrimp, I use their breaded cod. Assembling during my lunch break feels so exotic, is so quick to prep, and makes everyone at the lunch table jealous!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      sounds so good!

    • I also tried it this past weekend and this quick meal was a lifesaver (and super hit)! I substituted shrimp with fish as my husband is allergic. Such a delicious and simple meal. Thanks for sharing!

  4. Lyn says...

Tried to make these tonight but TJs didn’t have the Green Goddess dressing. :::::::::sigh::::::

    • Joanna Goddard says...

ooh you could do it with another dressing! or skip the dressing and put on some sour cream :)

    • Susan says...

My TJs was out of the green goddess too, so we used the cilantro dressing instead. So good!

  5. Denise says...

Oooh this was timely. Made a Thai takeout leftovers hack with tortillas last night. Had left over som tum (green papaya salad) with some crispy shrimp. Added some mozzarella (too lazy to shred the block of pepper jack) and splashes of chipotle hot sauce. Give it a go, Joanna! Super delish.

  6. susan says...

Can you share the salsa recipe?

  7. Denise says...

    OMG !!
    Soo Healthy . Making these
    This Weekend !!

  8. Sherman says...

Sounds (looks) delish. Big fan of Trader Joe’s & will be purchasing these items soon.
Throw on some Jimmy Buffet tunes, munch on some tacos. What could be wrong with that?

    • that sounds amazing :)

  9. Jennifer says...

Love this series!!! Please keep it up always!!!!

  10. Kay says...

Thanks! Almost anything made from TJ’s is welcome on my phone!

  11. Any UK-based readers have a suggestion for a good substitute to TJ’s? I’ve struggled for years to find a decent solution that wasn’t just me attempting to make thing I wanted myself at home. (M&S just isn’t the same) Thanks!

  12. Paula says...

I love Trader Joe’s for it’s great food and other stuff. These coconut shrimp tacos sound delicious. I’m going to give them a try. Keep the TJ hacks coming.

  13. kendra says...

the TJs jalepano hummus is also amazing with fish tacos!

  14. Emily says...

    Love this series so much!

  15. Michelle says...

Loving this series too!! We had the sweet potato gnocchi last night and it was soooo good. Keep them coming!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

so glad to hear it! thank you so much for the feedback xoxo

    • Meg says...

we did, too!!! no complaints…plates were licked clean!! ill definitely make that again.

i love TJs, but their flour tortillas aren’t great….kind of cardboard-y.

    • Sasha says...

Meg, re tortillas. Do you shop at Costco? They have the best tortillas, you cook them yourself. You just heat in a dry skillet. They are so much better than any precooked brands we’ve tried.

    • t says...

totally agree meg. their flour tortillas are terrible.

  16. Hannah says...

Love these, love these, love these !
We love TJs Green Goddess dressing at our house and use it on most salads.
One night we had my in-laws over for supper…my four year old was helping to serve up her (very conservative and proper) grandma’s salad plate. She got all the ingredients on there (we had set up a chopped salad style meal) and then yelled loudly to me in the kitchen “Please bring the Green Goddamit sauce to grandma!”

My husband and me were laughing so hard in the kitchen that we wept. His parents were not amused but we couldn’t stop. Still can’t ?

    • Sharon says...

      LOL… this gave me a chuckle ;-)

    • Susan says...

      So funny!

    • Suzanne says...

She started a name change in our house “Can you bring me the green goddammit dressing, please?”
My kids will likely eat more greens now.
      Thanks,
      Suzanne

    • Karen says...

LOL!!! 😂😂😂 Your post CRACKED ME UP!! I can only imagine the look on grandma’s face! 😱

  17. Billy says...

I hope to try this soon.

  18. aga says...

I was going to warm up frozen haddock fillets for dinner, but now I feel the urge to run out and get salsa, tortillas, avocado…. yum!

  19. Anne says...

These TJ recipes are awesome! Thanks for the great series!

  20. Emily says...

I feel like a month of these hack will not be enough! Please keep them coming.

    • Ellen Mote says...

I agree! These have been my favorite recipes to date. More please!

    • Arcadia says...

      I agree with Emily!

    • Sarah says...

      Agreed!!

    • Joanna says...

      Me too!!!!!!! LOVE it

  21. Yutsoku says...

I counted 8 Ingredients. Optional ones still count.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

you really can make these tacos with just five! that’s the base — i’ve made them with five before, and they’re delicious :)

    • mikaela says...

I mean, do they really? There is a reason they are optional components, you could just as easily incorporate black beans, red onion, a zippy lime crema or fresh cheese, but the base recipe is still the base recipe. Not to be snippy, but optional serving suggestions really only exist for those who are less creative or experienced in the kitchen. They are optional for a reason, to each their own in terms of complexity or flavor building, but even if it had been strictly speaking eight ingredients, that’s not taxing enough for criticism.

  22. Kelly says...

I am in love with Trader Joe’s, my sister says “that is my boyfriend on the low”. What I like about Trader Joe’s is the same reason why you are demonstrating the wide variety of imported foods and drinks that you can make a splendid and delicious meals in a matter of 30 minutes and sometimes less. The second biggest and most importantly, I have two teens that are able to put together meals all by themselves with the help of Trader Joe’s products. Lastly it is a way to feed your family healthy meals without breaking the bank.

  23. Cate says...

TJ’s panko-breaded tilapia also makes a great fish taco!

    • Emily says...

They have a gluten free battered halibut that is also awesome in fish tacos!

  24. Janet says...

You could also make fish tacos by using their lightly breaded fish sticks! So convenient.

  25. A Martin says...

If you don’t like fish, I HIGHLY recommend the chili lime chicken burger in the frozen section. You can cut the burger in strips and fill the tortilla as you normally would. So bomb!

    • Steph says...

I love the chili lime chicken burger too! I slice it up over big salads all the time. So flavorful and satisfying!

  26. Katie says...

They make a mango jicama slaw that is soooo good on tacos. I’m tempted to make a big batch myself from scratch, since it looks pretty simple and I’d eat it on everything!

  27. Taryn says...

Just want to add that these Trader Joe’s hacks are amazing, and I LOVE YOU CofJ TEAM FOR POSTING THEM. Working mamas need dinners that can get on the table in about 7 minutes, with a crying kid (or two) wrapped around your ankles. These dinners are that. Keep ’em coming!

  28. Marlena says...

Get in my belly. This is happening TONIGHT! I just forwarded this to my husband along with the words “Tonight, or else.” hahaha He can interpret that however he wants.

  29. Katie says...

Yum! I have all of these ingredients in my fridge but never would have thought of putting them together. Thanks!

  30. Sasha says...

For the left out vegans, lol ?

Here’s a vegan take on super fun tacos, Korean tofu tacos:
Marinade tofu sticks in gojuchang, sesame oil and maple syrup. Bake, turning frequently.
Serve in totillas with cabbage or crunchy lettuce and Sriracha mixed with mayo maple syrup and green onions. Amazing!!

    • Tawny says...

Yay! My brain was already turning it vegan as I was reading through. But this is GREAT! Thanks, Sasha!

    • Yam!!!

    • Emily says...

      That sounds so good!

  31. Anna says...

I’ve been battling winter blues but these Trader Joe’s dinner ideas are GIVING ME LIFE. THANK YOU!

  32. This sounds amazing. And now I must stop by Trader Joe’s on the way home. Also, on the PPS that this isn’t sponsored content: I could understand why people might wonder, but anyone who knows Trader Joe’s knows they are notoriously quiet when it comes to marketing and advertising. They have almost no social media or digital presence.

  33. Meredith says...

Don’t forget lentil tacos from TJs! Their pre-cooked lentils make stuffing them into shells SUCH an easy last minute meal. You can saute onions and garlic and add in taco seasoning and mix it up with the lentils and it’s a tasty meatless meal!

    • Sasha says...

      Yummy

    • Tawny says...

      Love it, Meredith!

  34. Erin says...

Just a little PSA that Trader Joe’s sells frozen wild caught shrimp which is so much better than the farm-raised variety. They are pretty big so I butterfly them for taco & fajita dishes.
That organic cabbage mix looks great, I’m going to have to pick that up for some Chinese chicken salads!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      thank you, erin!

    • Jessica says...

Yes, thank you! I’m always wary of buying their frozen seafood as it’s usually farmed and VERY far from being considered local. Weirds me out to think of buying frozen fish that was farmed in Indonesia…

  35. Sara says...

I’ve never tried the coconut shrimp, but now…I musttttt.
So happy I’ve got a date for tacos with my BFF tonight. Perfect timing, CoJ ladies!

  36. Mea says...

Love these Trader Joe’s posts and hope they continue! Getting sick of my usual batch cooking so it’s nice to have easy recipes to whip up here and there.

  37. Sue says...

Great quick recipe! I would opt to just sauté some shelled frozen shrimp(thawed) in a bit of oil with TJs chile lime seasoning or TJs taco seasoning(available in packets) for a healthier take than the breaded shrimp.

  38. Elise says...

These posts are great! I don’t have a TJs near me but these ideas easily translate elsewhere. Thanks!

  39. Maggie says...

Made the gnocchi this week (delicious) and just got home from TJ’s.. I actually picked up taco ingredients! Different from this recipe but this particular spin on tacos looks fantastic. Will have to try these next week! The gnocchi was a big hit with my husband, and we loved that it took only 15 minutes from beginning to end.

  40. Meg says...

I don’t have a Trader Joe near me but Costco sells Trident’s Ultimate Fish Sticks (wild Alaska Pollock fillet with a very light panko breading) and we do the exact same thing! Believe me, these are not the horror show fish sticks of days gone by. Sooo good. Fish tacos for dinner tonight – thanks for the inspiration!

  41. OK I am also obsessed with all thing Trader Joe’s and this series of dinner ideas is FANTASTIC. I made the dinner with the gnocchi and my family LOVED it! My daughter is going to love this, she adores coconut shrimp. Why has it never occurred to me to put these things together??? PLEASE KEEP ON WITH THESE!!!

  42. Kaela says...

Love this idea! Trader Joe’s corn and wheat tortillas are the best because they don’t fall apart and still taste delicious!

    • C says...

Totally agree! Those tortillas are so awesome.

    • Hilary says...

I prefer the regular corn tortillas but those corn and wheat ones are KEY when making enchiladas. The corn ones just don’t roll or hold up as nicely and the texture is perfect with the corn/wheat blend.

  43. Christine says...

Can we get Trader Joe hacks all year long? Because that would be awesome! :) And the Green Goddess Dressing is the best thing. I even put it on my fried chicken…It somehow makes me feel less guilty.

  44. Faith says...

I love the Green Goddess salad dressing! It is scrumptious.

  45. Meg says...

There’s a Trader Joe’s opening next to my metro stop in NINE DAYS. Too bad they don’t offer a frequent flyer discount…

  46. Catie says...

These look awesome! I love the idea of the green goddess dressing with the cabbage mix to make that slaw. Plus, a quick sub of any protein in the pantry makes this totally versatile and restriction-friendly for just about anyone. Perfect!

  47. Jenn H says...

This series is exactly what I need right now, keep them coming and Thank You!

  48. Jess says...

Yum! I can’t wait to try this – especially the cabbage tossed with the green goddess dressing. Sounds like a game changer. Trader Joe’s’ Cilantro dressing is amazing too. It’s in the refrigerated section with the produce. I bought it last year on a whim and it has become our family’s best loved condiment. Highly recommend.

  49. Claire says...

Looks delicious! Taco night is one of our favorite dinner nights. We’ve done a version of these with fresh shrimp. Thanks for the recipe – also a good option.

  50. D says...

Would Linsey be willing to share the recipe for her salsa? Those chunks of mango look delicious . . .

    • Hilary says...

Looks like the salsa is from Trader Joe’s!

  51. Cooper says...

Looks delicious! I just made and loved the TJ’s sweet potato gnocci hack from last week. My other frequent TJ’s meal is Japanese fried rice, with extra shelled edamame stirred in and a fried egg on top. Simple and protein-packed!

    • Lauren says...

I eat that exact meal all the time, too :) That Japanese fried rice is amaaaazing.

  52. Kate says...

I’m not a fan of shrimp, anyone have any other TJ suggestions for a substitute? I am LOVING these hacks, keep them coming! :)

    • Kristin says...

      Try the carnitas! So good.

    • Jessica says...

I’ve done a very similar taco with the breaded white fish.

    • Sasha says...

Try marinated tofu sticks. We bake sticks marinated in gojuchang, maple syrup and sesame oil. Or Frank’s red hot sauce and soy sauce. Makes awesome taco filling. Lentils cooked with taco seasonings is great too.

    • Amy says...

I made tacos this week using their breaded cod filets and a bag of the apricot kale slaw. So easy!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      that sounds so good, amy!

    • Tracy says...

TJ’s breaded tilapia is good in tacos too!

  53. I may have to make a trip to Trader Joe’s to make these!

  54. Yes! We make these with the frozen cod too (I think this was another COJ suggestion). That Green Goddess dressing is SO good.

  55. Heather D says...

No TJ’s near me, but I love the quick, healthy ideas for lunch and dinner. These can be easily adapted using stuff from my own grocery nearby! Wooo!

  56. Summer says...

    Those look good!!

  57. R says...

Yay, another TJ’s hack! Please keep these coming! I already have all of this in my fridge and am going to make while working from home on this snowy day in NYC.

The comments on these TJ posts are the best and give me so many great ideas for quick lunches and dinners! I actually choose my Brooklyn neighborhood bc of the proximity to JT’s. Haha. It’s the best.

  58. Joanna says...

I am fully here for all the Trader Joe’s hacks!!

  59. Jenny says...

I need this in my very pregnant belly now!

Love this series and looking forward to the comments with (hopefully!) more great ideas.

  60. Stephanie says...

These posts are killing me! I love Trader Joe’s, but there aren’t any in Canada or at the very least near me.

  61. Sarah says...

my husband and i have a tradition of going out for mexican every sunday & i order the shrimp tacos more often than not. now i am going to try making them at home. thanks for this recipe idea lindsay!

  62. Jean says...

These look delicious! I LOVE this series – I live alone and I’m always looking for quick & affordable meals that won’t yield a ton of leftovers. A girl can only eat leftovers for so many meals…

  63. I think these Trader Joe hacks are my new favorite thing!

  64. Lily says...

    Yum!
