Cuyana Bags

Cuyana Bags

Two years ago, we discovered Cuyana, the California-based company started by two friends whose motto is “fewer, better things.” Their leather totes and travel bags are ideal for work, play and weekend getaways, and it has been exciting to watch their company grow…

Cuyana Cinch Bag

Cuyana Cinch Bag

Their new cinch shoulder bag is one of our favorite things they’ve done. I love how it looks like a bucket bag, but with a magnetic closure. It’s buttery soft and made in Italy with premium leather.

Here’s Caroline with the black bag. It comes in three colors. (Which would you choose?)

The tassel is an easy way to add flair to any of their bags. Cuyana can monogram up to three letters or symbols on it. Like the bag, it’s also made in Italy with soft Italian leather.

In addition to classic monogramming, Cuyana also just introduced quotes as part of their bespoke collection. They chose two phrases: “The Adventure Begins” and “Always Choose Love.” (They’re letting customers choose a third phrase. Leave a comment below with any suggestions!) The phrases can be added to their soft leather zipper pouches, passport cases or travel case sets.

Aren’t they lovely? See all Cuyana bags here, if you’d like.

BONUS for all readers: Cuyana is offering complimentary monogramming on anything with the code CUPOFJO through November 30th.

And for local readers, Cuyana is hosting a pop-up, opening this Friday, at 120 Wooster Street in SoHo. Here is the page for more info. They’ll have cinch bags and tassels there, and will be doing live monogramming every day.

I’ve always loved the way you add the disclaimer at the end of every sponsored post (Thank you for supporting the brands that help support Cup of Jo) It seems so personal and warm, I don’t know why, but I always feel good after reading it.
    Love your blog

    I love that rumi quote:
There are a thousand ways to kneel and kiss the earth.

Also I don’t know where to put this so I’ll just put it here… Joanna, I’ve been following your blog since you were single! I think you get prettier and prettier as you get older. Damn you, woman!

    Love!
How about an inspiring Picasso quote:
“Everything you can imagine is real”

  9. Erica says...

Hey, I also mistook Caroline for a model. Can you tell us where Caroline found that lovely comfy looking grey dress?

  10. Obsessed with the camel colored one! I just ordered a burgundy suede bucket bag, I think this might need to be a next purchase!

    xoxo http://www.touchofcurl.com

  11. Whoops, almost mistook Caroline for a model there. You look lovely :)

  12. omg, i love all three colours, but if i had the chance to have one id probably invest in the black one since its my main colour most of the time.
and yeah, love both phrases they chose, can’t think of anything better actually!

  13. Jenny says...

I have the oversized carryall tote in black with gold monogramming and I’m obsessed! I use it as an everyday bag and diaper bag. It’s huge, so may not be for everyone…but I use it every single day as it’s so easy to keep baby stuff and my wallet and phone. I use it on business trips too since I can easily slip my laptop in it.

  14. Christy says...

I love the phrase “perfectly empowered.” So many women (and men too!) feel inadequate for the challenges of life. But we are empowered to accomplish, love, achieve, forgive, and carry on. Everyone should feel perfectly empowered every day.

  15. Rebecca says...

    How about “trust yourself”.

Where us the phone cover from?? I love it!

  19. Baylee says...

My best friend got married this summer and I had the honor of serving as her maid of honor. As a gift to me she had one of Cuyana’s beautiful bags mongrammed for me. I use it every day! It is so classic and I always get compliments. Not to mention the bag is wonderfully made! I would love to add the slouchy bag to my collection! I was so excited to see this post, thanks for sharing!

  20. Jenny says...

Beautiful bags! My slogan would be “Breathe”. It can be hard to forget sometimes :)

  21. Katie Larissa says...

For the third quote, how about something short and meaningful? I think “YOLO” would really fit the bill.

    Juuuuust kidding. ?

  22. Nina says...

Long, very long, time reader. First time commenting. I just had to because I love everything about this post. The photos of you and Carolyn, and what you’re both wearing. I’m a short person too and second, or third, the request info on the dress Carolyn is wearing.

I’m a huge fan of everlane and cuyana and bought my niece a passport wallet, which she loves. Also, it so happens that I’m going back and forth with myself right this very minute about whether to get a zip tote or the bucket bag and also whether to get black or that beautiful tan. I’ve got vacation in New Orleans coming up in early December, so need to actually decide now! Free monogramming? Don’t need any more incentive than that! Thanks for the great post!

  23. I have always appreciated the command, “Be Brave” –– and I’ve never regretted following it. Sometimes you need a nudge to be as big as you want to be.

  24. Laurie says...

    “una bella vita”

  25. Emily says...

“You’ve got this” – it works any which way! I love the Miel, both the colour and the name. xo

  30. PM says...

    I suggest “WOO WOO”

  31. Emily says...

I love Cuyana bags! I have two of the totes and I use them all of the time. I love that the are soft and slouchy unlike other more rigid leather totes. I almost forgot that a post on Cup of Joe is where I first heard of them! Thanks for introducing them to me!

  32. Amelia says...

    Beautiful!

  33. Erin says...

    “What if …”

  34. They should put ‘I kow what you did…” on it as a quote! Instant conversation starter :D

  35. These are just gorgeous pieces! I just moved to England 3 months ago with my husband and 4 kids, and traveling is about to become a lot more common, so I’m loving the passport case and travel case sets!

  36. El says...

I love Cuyana! For a slogan I’d like to suggest “I can say no.” A daily reminder of the power and beauty of saying NO. We don’t need to be everything or anything to everybody.

  37. These bags are beautiful. Do you have any recommendations for bags similar to these but are faux leather? It’s hard to find items that are as beautiful and are made with precision when its not leather.

  38. Prudence says...

I cannot express how much I love Cyuana and all of their products (I have the short tote in tan, make up cases in black with gold monograming and the weekender bag in black). Every piece I have is quality and holds up to regular (and more than regular) use.

And… searching for reviews of Cuyana before my first purchase was how I found Cup of Joe.

  47. Josette says...

Is that the Everlane chunky cardigan you’re wearing Jo?

  48. Caroline says...

Oh, where is that beautiful phone case from???

  49. jeannie says...

    My phrase: express gratitude

  50. Kelly says...

Love your blog. I always look forward to what you’ll come up with for me to enjoy. I love classic things. I purchased a leather bag in Istanbul 25 years ago that looks very similar to these. I would love the brown bag. How about “SEE THE BEAUTY” – seems pretty appropriate for a beautiful bag.

  51. Love their weekender bags.
You should do a giveaway! I like the black.

  52. that buttery caramel color, for sure!

Alas, my brain is fresh out of quotes.

  53. They are beautiful! I have to somehow get to Soho on Friday! =P

  54. Keri says...

I’d love to know what lipstick Caroline is wearing. So pretty!

I love the cinch shoulder bag. I may have to put this on my secret wish list!

  61. Jourdan A says...

Thank you for this post! I’ve been hung up on the mansur gavriel bucket bag for forever, but the price and limited stock really turned me off. I just purchased this bag in black and excited to see it in person!!

  62. Morgane says...

How about a line in French, yet one that virtually anybody could understand. I am thinking ‘Je ne regrette rien’ (I have no regrets). or alternatively in english ‘No regrets’

    • I think “no regrets” is lovely. I would love the Bible verse too…

“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Hebrews 1:11.

Joanna, I love your entire outfit in the first image! Any chance you could let us know where your sweater and jeans are from? Thanks :)

    • Erin says...

I may be wrong – but the knit looks like the ‘The Chunky Knit Cardigan’ by Everlane, to me.

  66. Dana Wilson says...

Live out loud! My favorite small quote. I am a huge fan of them as well, and I was delighted when I went to their boutique in San Francisco. I bought the large tote for my birthday…..it is amazing!

  67. 3rd quote: “Start where you are.”

  68. lindsay says...

These are lovely! Cute pics of you ladies too!

  69. I adore Cuyana! I have one of their tote bags and it is so chic but also SO practical. Today, while wandering Manhattan with family who were visiting, my bag fit all of the following: small umbrella, large DSLR camera, wallet, sweater, and various small gifts my family surprised me with (good thing I had a bag that could accommodate unplanned items!). Would love to add that tassel to it for a bit of an upgrade!

  70. Lilly says...

buttery soft and made in Italy = mhm yes

  71. Mary Jenkins says...

I love this bag! And thanks for looking out for us short ladies ;-)

  72. CARPE NOCTEM

  73. Amy says...

Caroline- I love your dress in these pictures– where is it from???

  74. Caroline: always thinking for us short people. The bags are beautiful.

  75. Shannon says...

You know we’re all going to want to know about that great jersey swing dress Caroline is wearing…. Details?

  76. These shoulder bags look good enough to eat! (I’m serious!) I would go with either the tan (looks a bit like butterscotch!) one or the wine one.

    Thanks for sharing ladies!

  77. Jessica S says...

Third phrase: YES TO IT ALL

  78. When i saw this post, i thought oh no, not more stuff…
But then i read “fewer better things” and i liked it.
We do not need more things we need good quality things that last.
Love their minimalist design as well.
    Thanks Joanna)))

  79. Nectar says...

LOOOVE this brand so so much. For my best friend’s “we’re grown now!” birthday present, I got her the travel bag set monogrammed. She literally uses them everyday.

Can’t wait to be the zipper tote myself!

  80. These bags are amazing! I’m on the market as of now, being that my trusty Madewell has taken one too many a tumble.

  81. Geri says...

I like a bag without a lining! The linings always get sooo dirty but the leather is tougher and doesn’t seem to as much. These bags are beautiful, I would love the both colors, the tassel is such a classic touch with monogramming.

  82. Jen Sparks says...

Very stylish bags, I would use the tan. My quote suggestion: “Smile, Your’e Beautiful”.

  83. These bags a simple and cute. Love them ♥♥

    summerdaisy.net

  84. Alice Quin says...

Great bags and you two ladies look beautiful as always! I would use the tan.

  85. Christie says...

I adore these! Such a coincidence, I was just browsing Cuyana bags online last night.

I don’t get why most leather bags aren’t lined these days though – I can’t bring myself to buy a bag without lining, what if I somehow stained the interior of the leather? I like to know that I have that extra layer of protection (and a bag always seems a little cheap to me without lining).

    • Shannon says...

Hi Christie! My best friend works for a leather bag company (lotuffleather.com–definitely a splurge but sooo worth it if you are saving up or need to give someone a gift hint idea :) I def had the same thought as you at first. But then I got my bag and I won’t go back to unlined! It’s so gorgeous and….substantial! It’s very sturdy and I feel like it just has so much gravitas. Now when I look at my lined bags (which, TBH the lining actually shows the stains really obviously–darn ink pens exploding, etc.) THEY actually look cheaper to me now. Because reaching in and feeling the leather is so luxurious. I’m a convert.

Ha, I never thought I would wax poetic about unlined bags, but just thought I’d share my conversion story :) The Cuyana bags look so beautiful, too!

    • Shannon says...

Oops that should be won’t go back to lined* Typing fast. D’oh!

    • Christie says...

Thanks for the feedback Shannon, I’ll keep it in mind. :)

    • Cait says...

I deliberated for a long time about getting a Cuyana tote because I also like lined bags, but I bought one over a year ago and it has taken a lot of abuse as a daily work bag and it still looks fantastic. I’m totally lusting after the bucket bag now…
