Peaches yes!
Happy Peach ice cream!
Peach ice cream with hot fudge is a summer treat.
I love how these little notes capture the feeling of summer without trying too hard. My favorite has to be “Escape with a good book”—it reminds me that some of the best summer adventures happen in the pages of a novel. Now I’m tempted to make my own seasonal slope note and see how many of these I can actually check off before autumn arrives!
Oh Elizabeth, your comment breaks my heart. Such a heavy truth.
I also hope that you’re right — that something gets through and wakes people up. We can’t keep pretending that nothing is wrong. We have to change how we live. I think about the structural and cultural changes we need in order to make a radical shift. I try to imagine what it would be like if we all valued our earth, water, life (including all people) and truly lived by those beliefs, and then I try to live this way myself and vote and spend accordingly.
Some days I feel more hopeful and others less, but I try not to give in to despair. Thinking of all of you and hoping for clean air and climate action
Wish I knew what Elizabeth said!

I absolutely read the last square as “Embrace a lawn gnome.”
Love this ! I will !
LOL I will, too. I’ve been building a backyard garden and looking at cement animals and things to hide around…maybe this is the universe letting me know it’s finally time for lawn gnomes.
I’m definitely more of a nectarine person. Does anyone remember the Sesame Street song? Must’ve been from the 90s when my kids were little. I have to sing it every time I have one, even if I get loco looks from the fam —
But a nectarine!
Now there’s a fruit, a nectarine!
Where do such things come from? Half a peach, half a plum.
And very clean! You wash them so they’re very clean!
And be sure when you do, there’s no bugs in there, too…
Ooh, me too! I look forward to nectarine season every year, but I’m too old to know the Sesame Street song. I will take vintage lawn darts as the ultimate yard game, though. My grandparents let me fling those all over the back yard as a kid in the 70’s–danger be damned, it was fun!
I just bought strawberry plums at Trader Joe’s and now I need to go back and buy like 4 more boxes. Best plum I’ve ever had!
I want a strawberry plum ! Whatever it is !
Michigan girl here!! lol the peaches gave me and my sons cyclosporiasis and it’s currently so Smokey outside from the Canada wildfires that it’s hazardous to our health to be outside. Literally categorized as the most unhealthy air on earth atm. Summer is feeling like prison.
May you, your son and the whole world heal quickly and completely to feel better, relax and eat healthy food without concern!
Also in the midwest, and experiencing the same. Was going to go to the beach this weekend, but not when AQI is 417. Community pool is closed due to weather, so will be hitting up the library and movie theater to get my little kids out of the house.
I’m in Wisconsin and feel the same right now. Almost as bad as winter when it’s dangerously cold and you can’t be outside. I went to get the mail and regretted it, which made me not water my garden as I should have. Mother Nature is ticked off, that’s for sure. Trying to find fun things to do inside although the air conditioning is getting to me, lol!
Here in western Colorado, we’re now sadly accustomed to surviving under horribly smoky skies from June through September every year. It’s not that I’m wishing misery on anyone else, but when the smoke impacts the Midwest and the East Coast, maybe more folks will start to realize that we need to take this seriously. The Dust Bowl only ever got attention because the dust clouds made it to D.C.
There was all this chatter today in NYC about the Wold Cup game Sunday being rescheduled because of the smoke. Elizabeth I am with you – I no one seems to care enough about these wild fires until it impacts a coast or god forbid threatens a sporting event.
Here in France we’re facing our 3rd heatwave. We’ve had thousands of humans deaths, millions of animals (farming and wildlife) and lots of forest fires. It’s so sad, scary for the future and enraging. When will we humans in powerful countries and our institutions, wake up and start to really act to slow down climate change and stop feeding it ???!
French people here too, Maïa I feeling exactly the same. I think it is a good start to know that we are not alone although sometimes it does feel like it. I try to give my vote to candidates with the most “environnemental friendly” path whenever I can. Apart from that, I wonder these days, what could we do to make things change? Even a little? How could we build something at least locally, in our neighbourouds for example? I am frsutrated cause I don’ t know what to do, where to start !
*neighborhood I mean!! Sorry for the terrible spelling!
Julie, here are some small things I’ve done in my neighborhood that can have a big impact:
1) organize a composting system so you don’t throw food in the trash (wasted food generates a lot of greenhouse gas emissions). It can be as simple as signing up for a composting service yourself and inviting neighbors to throw their scraps in with yours (you can also split the cost, which saves money!) or starting a compost heap in your backyard if you have one (and inviting more neighbors to use it).
2) start a carpool club –– especially if you live in a neighborhood where most people drive everywhere
3) the most important thing, as you noted, is how we vote, so talk to your neighbors about elections, research candidates together, etc. I wrote a little guide about this in case you’re curious: https://smoothliminal.com/2018/10/22/how-to-throw-a-ballot-party/
Thank you Julie and Smoothliminal for your answers!
Julie thank you for saying “what can I do?”. It gives me hope. :)

Tu peux calculer ton empreinte carbone ici : ça permet d’être plus au clair et de donner des idées d’actions selon là où on en est.

Mais aussi : The best is collective action. So to find an organisation to join to act together. Smoothliminal, I love your suggestion of a collective compost. Its something I was thinking to propose in my appartment building and it motivates me to start tackling this project! Also, I read your blog about your ballot party. Not sure how I could adapt that in France but I’ll think about it as presidential elections are next year and we’re very scared that far right could access power (or to keep the actual party that is most of the time doing an extreme right politic while claiming they are moderates…)
