What Did You Do This Weekend?

end of a lovely week in Paris (my husband’s hometown) for the first time in 3 years with my husband and kids. Spent Saturday at the jardin d’ acclimatation, a little amusement park in paris, and rode my first roller coaster in so long (do I need to ride another one soon? I do not). ate the most delicious baguette with butter and jam and a latte for breakfast, and went to my husband’s godmother’s house for snack in the afternoon, and ate truly like 6 mini pastries.

highlight (or lowlight?) of sunday was getting stuck in the security line for over 30 minutes because during this week my husband was clearing out his childhood home and decided to bring his 30 year old nintendo and a million dusty games in his carry-on. the french authorities were rightly perplexed and concerned by this, resulting in an extremely thorough search. I won’t soon forget the image of him trundling as fast as he could with two heavy bags of electronics while pushing a stroller with our three year old through the airport, as the older two kids (7 and 9) and I stood with one foot on the jetbridge cheering him along (he made it with 2 minutes to spare before they closed the gate). I had already made up my mind to forgive him for making us miss the flight for absurd levels of nostalgia and then when we didn’t miss the flight I had all this forgiveness and nowhere to put it. he said i could use it the next time he transports 30 year old electronics transcontinentally, haha

I mostly did homework and caught up on chores (grad school life) but I also got to see a local production of Othello. One of my friends I did high school theater with actually went on to do theater, unlike me, and while she wasn’t in this show, her husband directed it (and is the director of the company that put it on). My first exposure to Othello at all, and I found it eerily prescient.

Saturday went to a regenerative farm with my friend and our kids (1 week old piglets ahhhhh) then spent the afternoon pruning back our “wild area” in the garden and building new insect homes, clearing the pond which the starlings love to drink and bathe in. Sunday was kids swimming lesson, Starbucks, food shop, car wash and meeting my sis and her kids at the park. So unbelievably lucky. Hope all have a good week!

We prepped our garden boxes for planting in a few weeks. I’ve got tiny little pepper and tomato plants, cukes and zukes and pumpkins, all slowly growing inside, waiting until it’s finally warm enough to go out.

I had a lovely Friday long run with my dogs. Saw bison, sandhill cranes, mountain bluebirds, deer, elk, a bald eagle. Ran through a foot of snow in some areas.

We are raising butterflies with my preschoolers, and they have all but one turned into chrysalides. One lonely caterpillar still doodling around, a very late boomer. The little chrysalides are very beautiful, with sparkling metallic gold spots that shine through. And they just hang there, seemingly doing nothing, while they magically transform inside. Such a metaphor.

It’s snowing here again on a dreary Monday, winter leftovers challenging our resolve yet again.

I spent the weekend with my Wine Club ladies in adorable Palisade, Colorado! There was laughter, there were tears, there was yoga at a winery and a nice man named John who drove us around town in a safari truck to go wine tasting and didn’t bat an eye while we listened to Shania Twain, The Barenaked Ladies and Britney Spears at top volume, all in about 10 mins.

There was also falling down the stairs because someone went to a different bathroom so as not to wake her roommate up, but in the process, woke up the entire house. She was fine and we were touched by her kindness at 3am haha. Women are the best!

omg we had the best weekend! my family of four (kids 2&5yo) took the train(!) south to spend the weekend at my best friend’s house. They have a pool, a huge garden, an acre of land on a nature reserve, massive trees on their property and a real excavator! They fed us alison roman delights of as labne dips and chocolate chip shortbread! We swam til our lips turned blue and experienced the human delight of warming up after a cold swim! While my friend put the final touches on dinner, my kids and I ran into her flower garden with clipping shears and made the most beautiful bouquet of flowers for the table. It showered over night while my kids shared a mattress on the living room floor and snuggled up together. I snuck to the window in the early morning to watch the rain fall over the valley in front of their house and then snuck back into bed. We watched disney’s robin hood and I had never seen it before and it was perfect for my 5 year old who is always working out logistics and ethics of the criminal justice system. My daughter discovered the childhood joy of …snails!

My son asked us which side of the family they are from, mom or dad’s, because they’re the only friends we call aunty and uncle. I’ve had this best friend since high school and it’s epic to notice her get cooler and cooler with age. I cannot wait to be an aunty to her kids one day.

Worked my farm’s stand at the farmer’s market and then house chores (Note: do not sleep on fava beans. If they are in season near you, get to a market and buy them!! Used my farmer’s market beans to make the most delish fava bean-macadamia nut tartine on toasted sourdough with goat cheese. Run, don’t walk!). Then had the pleasantest evening with my boyfriend getting food and walking and talking. He’s the absolute best. Melancholy Sunday morning brought planting native plants at Quaker meeting, crashing out, and then hectically making above mentioned tartine for cookbook club. Full full full! I need a weekend from the weekend haha.

This *may* be our last weekend before welcoming our twins, so my husband and I really packed it in! We hung out with friends and watched hockey playoff games, went to his niece’s volleyball game, took a baby basics class at the hospital (better right in the nick of time than never), and had a dinner date dreaming about who our boys will be.

Oh, and we spent an hour and $250 at the urgent vet for them to tell us our dog is stressed about the new babies coming. 🙃

I think we should probably all blink a few times before we speak and take a spin through the ol’ Brain-odex (however mine is nothing like Jamie’s – it’s all partial recipes and things I wish I could forget I said).
