By the lovely Grace Farris.
P.S. Everyday vacations and fall fashion for book lovers.
I consciously limited myself to one pumpkin item at Target today (a can of pumpkin to pumpkin bread for my co-workers). After Tuesday all bets are off.

Why is fall the best?? Today we were hiking through fall leaves and talking about why we have a million fun fall traditions and no analogy for spring. Fall is, quite simply, amazing.
I surely can’t be the only one who can’t stand the pumpkin spice onslaught every fall?!
There is no one happier than I am after I have bought my yearly TJs cinnamon whisk that I hang up in my tea making area just for the vibes for the whole season!
Starting on Tuesday pumpkin spice is fair game. Until then I’m still pretending its summer, which is easy to do here where its 85-90 degrees still. :)
Not been to the states so excuse my ignorance but what actually is pumpkin spice?! Assume it’s not pumpkin flavoured…. Is it a sort of mixed spice that I’d associate with Xmas, mulled wine etc – nutmeg, cinammon, clove etc? Or more savoury?
It’s sweet/Christmassy! I think it’s because cinnamon+nutmeg is usually in pumpkin pie.
There often isn’t actual pumpkin involved, but I tend to like it better when there is (like in a pumpkin muffin or bread). My local coffee place does a latte with both the spice and a little pumpkin purée, which is really good!
Yes, you’ve got it exactly. Those spices pair beautifully with pumpkin, and we use those spices when making pumpkin pie, pumpkin muffins, pumpkin cheesecake. You can even buy a tin of “pumpkin spice,” which is just a mixture of those other spices.
My husband stopped at Trader Joe’s earlier this week and told me that due to all the pumpkin everything I’m not allowed to go unsupervised. But the likelihood that I rebel and stop on the way home and indulge my very basic mom instinct for all the pumpkin is very high today!
ahahahahahah
This is me. I am an autumn marketer’s dream.
Apple cinnamon supremacy!!! (Seriously, give me apple-y things or maple over pumpkin any time.)
ok– I have one for you then! Easy Apple Cake recipe:
mix a box spice cake mix, a can of apple pie filling, and 4 whole eggs and put in a 9 x 13 pan. bake at 350 until the top bounces back a bit, i think its about 25 minutes or so. Frost with cinnamon butter cream. You’re welcome!
Ditto, except for Smitten Kitchen’s pumpkin bread recipe, it’s the best! I protested to my cashier at TJ’s when shopping on September 1st; Pumpkin overload! The first day of Autumn is September 22nd people! I’m still enjoying Summer produce.
omg. This is me. I bought Pumpkin Spice Frosted Flakes last week. WHAT?!
Hahahahahahahah
Loving topic hijack for my all-time favorite Maggie Smith (rest in piece, exquisite woman) story:
https://captainfabfro.tumblr.com/post/135118527571/maggie-smith-and-judi-dench-photographed-by-the
‘Dench happily admits she and Maggie Smith were reduced to “giggling girls” during their eight-week shoot in India (for The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel), passing their spare time playing word game Bananagrams (incidentally, a game Dench taught Smith, who in turn introduced it to her Downton Abbey colleagues).“I was swimming in the hotel one day and Maggs was in her room. She said, ‘Oh Judi, go and get Bananagrams’,” Dench explains, recalling how their hotel boasted a pool right outside their rooms.“So I swam back, went in, got the Bananagrams, tied it round my head and swam back – and she took a photograph!“
[…]
Dame Maggie Smith steps forward in typically stately fashion, the illusion of grandeur only slightly dimmed by the fact that she is wading through a swimming pool, a banana shaped bag of the word Bananagrams balanced precariously on her head. Filming The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel has wrapped for the day and Maggie is heading to the room of her great friend and co-star, Dame Judi Dench. “Their rooms are divided by the pool, so they paddle over to each other and play the game in their swimsuits, the film’s director, John Madden, explains to Marie Claire.’
I just adore her. What an incredible woman
Love! Thank you for posting!
I love this so much! Thank you for sharing!
Indeed Lauren O, thank you. RIP Maggie and thank you xx
SO fun ! Love this !
Haha. This was me at Trader Joe’s last Saturday. My sweet husband was like, “Whaaaaat is happening?” as I carried four jars of pumpkin bisque soup towards our cart.
A couple of years ago, after checking out my groceries, the cashier at Trader Joe’s congratulated me for not buying any pumpkin flavored products! She was impressed 🤣
The way my 8 year old gets excited for ANY kind of new cereal other than just plain old “healthyish” options !!!!
I might make his day by bringing home the new Halloween special spooky ones today just to see whole face glow up <3 lol
You brought back childhood memories of BooBerry, Count Chocula and Frankenberry. A few years ago someone mentioned buying a variety pack of mini cereal boxes as a stocking stuffer (the sugary pack naturally). I bought those for my nieces who had never seen them before and they were so excited. Big discussion over what to pick first, Froot Loops, Corn Pop or Apple Jacks? I feel like your son would be over the moon for that :)
You sure have (nailed it). In one week the entry door aroma of Pumpkin spice has landed at CVS, TJ’s, retail dept stores, grocers, drs. offices, wine shops, coffee shops, nail salons and of course candle shops. But, the biggest surprise was walking into Lowe’s to buy chalking and immediately recognizing a strong ode to cinnamon!
Soon to be followed by gingerbread, wood fire smoke and cranberry!
My sinuses are alive!
