Three Styles We’re Stealing From Our Moms

Hats and scarves – my mom was recently going to donate a huge hatbox and I took it instead. I have several of her headscarves from the 60s and 70s and have enjoyed getting stopped by other older women telling me that they had the same one when they were younger.

And wool hats – the dressy fedora type. And skirts with pockets. I always thought my mom was a strange for her flowy skirts with pockets, but now with two kids I get it.

When I was little, living in Minnesota, my mom had an extra-long winter coat that was a shade somewhere in between mustard and chartreuse. At the time I was humiliated to be seen in public with her when she wore it, but now my favorite clutch is a velvet one in the same shade, and I find myself buying everything I can in that color. If it’s the winter coat color, I’m practically obligated to have it.

this post is wonderful and makes me feel so very lucky to be my mom’s daughter. she had bangs and a bob when she was my age (34), plus she had year-old me, and i love seeing what she wore in the mid-eighties. i think her style then was a bit more carefree and thrown-together than it is now, when she has more time, but she’s always taken time to be colorful and play with patterns (and also hand-sew her separates!). and so do i! a little silk scarf here, a bright sock there, handmade earrings or hand-mended mittens. she’s definitely here in my own style outlook. i love looking at how style can be such a touching, beautiful homage. (to moms, dads, or anyone else.)

also, these old photos and talk of bygone styles makes me think of the book Women & Clothes, by Sheila Heti, Leanne Shapton, and Heidi Julavits. it’s a treasure trove of personal, unique, heartfelt style commentary/photos/memories by women (mostly canadian i think). so good.

Just love this post, mostly as it has resulted in such touching comments. How great are moms?!

My mom used to wear a lot of banana clips. There are loads of styles these days that you can find online. It feels more fun than just a pony or a bun.

Ahhhhhhhhhhh I’m obsessed with Cowichan sweaters. I’m a knitter and I knit my own modern take on the Cowichan based off Granted sweaters (also ‘modern Cowichan’, very expensive). I think I knit it 10 years ago and I still have it!

My mom has great style. In my elementary school class of 28, she was the only working mom. She would drop me off in her stylish blazers and silk scarfs and look very glamorous as redhead in her camel coat. I was always proud of my mom, even though I was sometimes sad she couldn’t come on field trips as much as other kids’ moms. When I was in high school, one of my old classmates told me she thought that my mom was a movie star when we were in kindergarten. This made me chuckle.

I have pictures of my mom and dad from the 1940s, and they looked like movie stars. As time went on, my mom was more about wearing what she knew looked good on her and not keeping up with the styles. She passed away 3 years ago at the age of 94, and I often says things that sound just like her. She loved her sweatpants in cold weather, and so do I.

This is why I wish My Mom the Style Icon was still active!
