What Earrings Are You Wearing Right Now?

Pretty earrings

What earrings do you wear regularly? Recently, while living in jeans, shirts and sneakers, I realized that I dress like Jerry Seinfeld. So! To mix things up, I’ve been wearing pretty earrings. They frame your face and make such a impact, don’t you think? Now I feel instantly polished when I head to work or out to dinner.

I wear these guys, and here are five more lovely pairs: pine, twists, studs, opals and hollow.

What earrings are you wearing right now? I’d love to know…

P.S. In which I lost my wedding ring, and the beauty of signet rings.

    little garnets.

I loooooove big earrings. At the moment I’m just wearing dresses (particularly the a lien cotook shirt dress from uniqlo), sneaked (heels when in the office) and BIG earrings.
    My favourites are:
These hoops from Aurate NYC https://auratenewyork.com/collections/earrings/products/circle-earrings (which I cant find right now! I’m gutted)
Earrings from this designer that look like coral https://www.idaelsje.com/be-great
And when I’m really wanting to go big, these ones

I’ve had my eyes on these ones for years now. Maybe next birthday https://auratenewyork.com/collections/earrings/products/flower-earring-back-small

  3. Allison Wattenbarger says...

I’ve been wearing my Catbird Little Secret studs 24/7 for a couple years, along with a small grey-purple conch stud in one ear. One day I’d loooooove to switch out with something from SanSouers.

  4. Oops. I posted the website I work for, not where I bought my earrings!

  5. I tend not to follow fashions and wear handmade contemporary jewellery. Feel naked without a pair on. Currently wearing glare earrings by Kath Inglis from Bridget Kennedy Project Space

  6. Casey says...

This post is so perfect. I just got new piercings and have spent all week looking at websites for earrings. I love your links and the links in the comments. I also REALLY love the Man Repeller earrings!

  7. Cynthia says...

I have a large collection of earrings and rotate through them. Many of them were made by a friend who passed away last year from pancreatic cancer.

  8. Cheryl Ann Parsons says...

I’m just a plain silver hoop girl. Big and small ones.

  9. Nancy says...

I’m really into British brand Toolally at the moment. They have gorgeous lightweight acryllic statement earrings which are super comfortable to wear and always attract compliments! https://toolally.com/product-category/earrings/

I’m really into British brand Toolally at the moment and treated myself to a pair of their aqua and silver acrylic Art Deco earrings. https://toolally.com/ They’re stunning and very comfortable and lightweight.

I JUST took off my earrings, but I was wearing a beautiful pair by Sela Designs just now. She makes stunning jewelry and donates 100% of the profit to meaningful causes. FOR REAL. She is the sweetest and I love following her on Instagram! Her website is http://www.seladesigns.com

  12. Lynne says...

Cracking up on looking like Jerry S. One day I realized that I dressed like Where’s Waldo pretty much all the time. I was aiming for French Girl but…. no.

  13. Suzanne says...

No earrings to share – BUT WHAT IS THAT GORGEOUS LIPSTICK YOUR COVER MODEL IS WEARING? (Thanks, Joanna!)

  14. Heather says...

I’ve been a minimal jewelry wearer since my teenage years; it just felt like too much faff. A few months ago, however, I saw these beautiful rusty orange statement earrings at a local shop in Philly, and they just spoke to me. Now I’m hooked! I’ve always had a hard time feeling stylish, but I’ve been feeling myself with my new collection of larger, geometric earrings. (If anyone is interested, here’s the link to her Etsy shop: https://www.etsy.com/shop/theXENIASTUDIO)

  15. maywyn says...

Go to earrings are teardrop filigre silver earrings. The light and dark contrast and shape makes them look good dress up or down.

  16. Lauren E. says...

I visited my family in upstate NY years back, and, feeling very much like a chic New York City girl, wore white sneakers, jeans, and a blazer. My older brother said, so very sweetly, “Who are you, Jerry Seinfeld?” 😂

  17. Jessica Camerata says...

Those are the prettiest earrings. Love them! I typically go for a gold hoop (in a mix of sizes, just depends on the mood). Never one to do anything crazy though!

    xo Jessica

    • A huge thank you to Alyssa! (and hi from steeny! – text me if this is an Alyssa I know!)

  18. i am anxiously waiting for some custom bamboo earrings i recently ordered, they say “Vote” where a name would normally be placed.
that said, i love big earrings but have to keep them in my pocket or bag until i leave home in the morning. my youngest loves tugging them!

  19. Yen says...

My current daily earrings are the Druzy studs from Kicheko goods. I have them in pink and get so many compliments every time! They are elegant and lend just the right amount of sparkle without being too flashy.

    https://www.kichekogoods.com

Bonus: I also love their mission to empower children through education – a portion of every purchase goes to a scholarship for an underresourced child to attend school in Congo.

  20. Sarah says...

I wish I could wear anything but studs. My ears are just so sensitive, I can’t handle the weight or pulling of hoops or danglers.

I have 1 pair right now, a pair of turquoise studs from TheMerryElephant on Etsy. Waiting on two pairs of silver studs (small bars and moons) to come in the mail.

  21. Hanna says...

I wear small diamond studs about 99% of the time. When my mother-in-law died she left me two sets. They’re subtle and elegant enough for work trips and dinners, but they’re not in the way when I’m wrangling kids or pets or lab equipment. They’re also a nice reminder of my mother-in-law where ever I am. She devoted her whole life to being a wife and mother, and never had the career she dreamed about. As a grandmother to my kids, she helped make sure that I could be a wife, a mother, AND a scientist. It makes me happy to bring a little reminder of her with me to the lab and to my conference talks. Without her, I might not be there at all.

What a sweet tribute to someone who sounds like a wonderful woman. I’m sure some part of her in the universe is smiling because of you ❤️

      Love this comment, Hanna.

  22. Savannah says...

Not earrings but I was reminded by your related posts: what did you decide about your wedding ring? Did you ever replace?

    • Joanna Goddard says...

I ended up finding it! Was so happy!

  23. Zooey says...

I am wearing any hot earring that isn’t sold as a single, but as a pair.

    • Anna says...

LOL 😂 I agree! I was just going through the earring search and found a great pair on Etsy. I landed on tiny 24k gold hoops.

  24. Laura says...

Im not sure if you can get Helena Rohner in the USA but her jewellery is so so beautiful. I have some lovely blue studs from her that I wear all the time.

  25. Katrina says...

I chopped my hair into a pixie and now I wear ALL the earrings. The bigger the better. I’ll tone it down a little if I’m wearing a scarf in my hair. A scarf with giant, gold hoops feel a little too costumey — think pirate or gypsy. Not quite the look I’m usually going for.

  26. Michele says...

Lately, it has been all about these silver ‘door knocker’ earrings from Kendra Scott. (During your birthday month, they offer one item at 50% off!) They are great for business or casual. https://www.kendrascott.com/products/paxton.html

  27. Jo says...

Did anyone else mistake the earrings in the picture as macaroni?! Hahah!

  28. amy says...

    Love these!

  29. Elizabeth says...

If I’m wearing a statement necklace, I wear simple small gold or silver hoops. If not, I ware big silver hoops or long gold earrings in various shapes. I feel more put-together with earrings!

  30. Amy says...

Speaking of jewelry, I’m looking for a very specific bracelet from a small jewelry brand that’s been discontinued. It’s not on poshmark or ebay – any ideas on where else I can look for resale?

  31. Ashley E says...

I had short hair and always thought anything but studs made me look like I was trying too hard, and then one day I said f**k it and have been wearing big, fun, dangly earrings and LOVE IT. Currently obsessed with Seaworthy… I’ve had a necklace of theirs for years and it has stood the test of time (and three kids) and their ear rings are just as study and rad. YOLO LADIES, WHERE THOSE BIG OLE EARRINGS.

  32. Ann-Marie says...

I alternate mostly between small diamond studs (with screw-on backs because I know myself) and my Madewell earrings if I want something bigger, which I love as they have both gold and silver and go with everything! I also sometimes wear big gold hoops and an assortment of smaller silver dangly ones.

    The Madewell ones: https://www.shopbop.com/metal-statement-earrings-madewell/vp/v=1/1595277697.htm

  33. Julie says...

I feel naked without earrings! I wear large gold hoops a lot of days, as well as two really cool pairs that I bought at a cute shop by my bus stop. I also love simple post earrings, I have a rainbow sparkle Kate Spade I wear a lot and a pair that’s just a simple gold line.

Here’s the shop here in Philly, they have some funky stuff. And they once sold Gritty ornaments!

  34. Laurel says...

My classic diamond and platinum studs that I’ve had for almost 15 years – they never go out of style!

    • Erin says...

I’m with you Laurel. After years of wearing CZs, my husband treated me to the real deal and I they’ve become my uniform. They go with everything. They can elevate my sweats and tank top, they look professional at the office and they sparkle for date nights.

  35. Jennifer says...

I love my Julia earrings from Natalie Borton! She is a small shop located in San Diego, CA and she has such great capsule earrings that you can wear every day no matter what.

  36. Amanda W. says...

I wear a pair of hammered circle earrings given to me by my mother-in-law about a decade ago. They’re not expensive or flashy (she didn’t have a lot of money), but really mean a lot to me. Unlike my own mother, she bought what she knew I liked rather than something that matches her own tastes. I prefer simple designs, and these are so perfect; they go with everything. Sadly, she passed away six years ago, but the earrings remind me of her every time I wear them.

  37. E says...

Has anyone else had their ear piercing close up? I got my ears pierced as a young teenager and then they closed in my mid 20s. I got them re pierced then but they closed again! Mostly bc I didn’t wear earrings enough (they bother me when I sleep and then I’d just go weeks without them). Do I re pierced again? Seems kind of unwise. Or are there clip-on earrings that won’t make me look like I’m playing dress-up?

    • Ginger says...

I’m the same! My ears hated being pierced. Any kind of earring just hurt to wear, and eventually I decided it wasn’t worth the pain. I’ve bought one pair of clip-one from Etsy and am always on the hunt for more. If anyone has good suggestions, I’m all ears! (pun not intended)

  38. judy herington says...

I always wear my Kary Kjesbo designs essential chain earrings.
They can dress up or down. And always look amazing! check out her website.

  39. Bethan says...

I live in sleeper hoop earrings – they’re a continuous hoop and so no nasty pokey bits, super lightweight. It’s gross but I haven’t changed them for about 4 months!

  40. Tania says...

There’s this fancy, wonderful store in the West Village called Personnel of New York. I can’t really afford anything in it BUT they make fabulous costume-y earring for $25/ a pop (they sell them online too, I think, but have more options in store). I bought a Toirtoise shell pair (looks kinda like Machete) and I wear them constantly. I’m wearing them now!

  41. Abbe says...

Man, so many classy ladies with “real” jewelry! :) I am forever wearing kooky costume stuff — right now its a pair shaped like eyes from a big pack of fun nickel studs I got at Target, plus silver hoops in the cartilage piercings I have in each ear.

Interesting related question that I’ve been thinking about lately — I’m South Asian American, and I had my ears pierced as a baby as part of our cultural tradition. I’m not having kids anytime soon, but one thing I do think about is whether I would pierce my child’s ears. It worked out for me, and I value it as a tradition, but I do worry about the ramifications if my child doesn’t want to express their identity in that way. I’d be interested to hear other’s thoughts!

    • Kim says...

I have a three year old without her ears pierced. Although I think she’d be fine with the pain, and love wearing earrings, I’m still going to wait to let her choose to pierce them when she’s older.

    • Laura C. says...

It is a tradition in my country that girls have their ears pierced when they are babies. Mine were pierced by my dad (who was a nurse) and my girls have theirs pierced too (at two days old and three months old). It is not a harmful tradition.

    • talia says...

My thoughts when raising my girls was that they were beautiful with no societal expectations for such a short period of time, that I waited until they were old enough to make the decision for themselves. (same with makeup/nail polish, etc…) I didn’t want any distractions and I wanted them to feel empowered to decide for themselves. NO judgement for what others decided for their children.

    • ale says...

my parents got my ears pierced when I was tiny, like a few weeks old (as is the norm in mexico, or at least was in the 80s when I was born), and I sooooo wish they hadn’t done it. I hate earrings because i’m pretty self conscious about my ears that stick out, and I hate that I have the holes for something that I never ever wear! so now that I have a daughter, I will definitely let her decide when/if she wants them pierced instead of making the call for her.

  42. Sarah says...

I tend to wear the same earrings for months on end without ever taking them out; lately it’s been the diamond studs my in-laws gave me when my husband and I got engaged. I’m getting ready to pack for a trip to Italy in a few weeks (three weeks out of a carryon!), and think I’m going to need to treat myself to some new earrings. They really do make you look more put together, which is a godsend when they are tiny, easy to pack, and I hate all my clothes after day six!

    • Tan says...

I love these! Might have to treat myself :)

  43. Amy says...

Jewelry is my favorite element of getting ready each morning. I like to change it up a lot, but I like medium-sized statement earrings, usually a form of hoop. I’m also really into the wooden earring trend.

  44. Betsy says...

I’m not a jewelry person. There I said it!I buy a pair of earring, or a necklace, and wear the same one until it breaks, or I lose it.

But to be fair, I did have to let my ears close around 20, because I was allergic to EVERY kind of metal. I will save you the visual on what my ears and neck looked like from wearing them. Even the one’s that weren’t supposed to bother you. But I decided on my 30th birthday, to give earrings another try. I got my ears re-pierced that day!

So I started by switching my pearl earrings and diamond earring out about every couple of months. Then I found a cute pair of dainty, hexagon shaped gold earrings at Madewell. I’ve bought a ring there before, and within a day, the “gold” had worn off. But these were so cute, and 70% off. So for like $7, I took the risk. Love them so much! Even over a year later. My boyfriend wanted to see me in”dangly” earrings. So lo and behold, I found a darling pair of hexagon hoops. I didn’t realize I have a thing for hexagons! But they are so lightweight, I don’t even realize I have them on when I wear them. I love them. But my pearls are once again calling my name from the closet. So I will probably change them out soon.

  45. Amanda says...

Silver hoops with a single dark blue bead–got them as part of a set from Target (their Universal Thread brand). Simple, little bit of color, not too busy to distract from my blue plaid shirt. :)

  46. I love earrings and used to buy them from all sorts of places. But eventually I had plenty, and only got them if someone gave them as a gift.

These days, my collection is almost all earrings that were gifts from friends or family or ones that I picked up on travel. These end up being my favorite, since every pair reminds me of a special person or place. (Right now, my go-to pair was given to me as a gift from my mother-in-law; we picked them out together in a tiny shop in Istanbul. Talk about memories!)

  47. Ellie says...

My husband gave me diamond studs a few years ago and I almost never take them off! I love them feel like they brighten up my face. Wearing anything else feels weird at this point haha.

  48. Awads says...

i am not a fan of these vendors selling single stud earrings, especially at the high price point. hard pass! (i am currently in a bathrobe with just tiny faux diamond hoop earrings on, pondering if i’ll get dressed at all today!)

  49. Boerumama says...

I’m on the hunt for a colorful pair of medium-sized resin hoops. I tend to wear so much black/white/grey that I think a pop of green or yellow would be fun. Link me up?

  50. Siobhan says...

Did anyone else think that the cover photo was of Caroline and not a model? I was like “damn, you all have a great photographer, Caroline looks amazing!”

    • Jessica Melindy says...

Yes!!! Also it made me want to style my eyebrows like that.

    • Lauren says...

      I thought the same thing!

  51. Rose says...

I wear a beautiful pair of diamond studs my husband bought me as a graduation present 11 years ago. We were pregnant very young and early in our relationship. We were also both in college and working while managing the stress of being new parents. The earrings remind me of the strength and dedication we had to give our new family a good life. If we can get through those early days of struggle than we can get through anything in life together!

I love the simplicity and the sparkle! They make me happy :)!

  52. K says...

I wear a small “ear earring” that wears its own tiny gold hoop, and a silver star in the other ear (full disclosure: I designed them!)

    • Kate says...

Do you sell them? Would love a link!

  53. Lana says...

I’m a self admitted earring whore and wear anything from Target earrings, to vintage gaudy clip on’s, to the delicate pearl earrings I inherited from my husbands grandma.

  54. Elizabeth says...

These are all so lovely! My ears are not pierced. Do you have recommendations for clip on earrings?

  55. Anonygirl says...

I’ve been wearing handmade earrings for the last couple of years (not handmade by me), but I think it’s time to change it up. I just went on Etsy and found a couple of pairs – my parents needed birthday gift suggestions anyway. Thanks for the inspiration – so many pretty pairs shared here.

  56. Lauren Lyons says...

I wear the most boring earrings every day. I wear a small gold ball stud in my 1st piercing + a small huggie hoop from Anine Bing in my 2nd piercing. That’s it. The huggie earrings are so difficult to put in, that I rarely take them out– even for special occasions.

  57. Ann says...

I wear the Madewell Three-Pack Hoop Earring Set on rotation.

  58. I have two pair of small Ted Muehling earrings I wear all the time. Just a tiny pop of color. I covet more, but, you know, mortgage.

  59. Kristin says...

Oooh, those pearl ones are SO pretty. I just about always wear my diamond studs. I have a big pair of chunky gold hoops from Madewell I occasionally wear in the summer. Need to branch out more!

  60. Sharon in Scotland says...

When I was much younger I could wear any sort of nonsense from Miss Selfridge or H and M. Then my ears started to react to nickel so I only wear silver. I currently wear silver stars, only £20.00 which I’ve had nice comments on. Also silver half hoops from Next…………….30 years old and a pair of small pearls on silver posts.
My mum let me get my ears pierced when I was about 13. It was in a department store called Keddies in Essex. The lady on the jewellery concession did it with a gun, in front of random Saturday shoppers. I remember taking out the sleeper earring at the beginning of Mr Ashworth’s english class and only managing to get it back in by the end

  61. Arne says...

My wife gave me Diamond Studs that I always wear , 2 in each lobe

  62. Kirsten says...

I haven’t worn earrings in months because BABY. Wahhhh!

  63. Ananya says...

Use to change earrings a lot back in the day, but sort of just stopped changing them entirely all of a sudden. Wearing my little diamond studs for a pretty long time now and I just don’t feel like taking them off.

Also, I’m a new reader and I love this blog so much! Thank you for such awesome content.

  64. Rachael says...

My aunt died four years ago of metastatic pancreatic cancer and one of the things she left to me was her exquisite collection of earrings. I wear one pair almost daily: it’s an antique setting of old gold with seed pearls and diamonds in a half-moon. They are absolutely exquisite, I get compliments every time I wear them, and I never fail to think of her and what a generous and loving woman she was.

  65. Traci says...

I like to peruse through the Sundance Jewelry and then search a similar item on Etsy. Lately, I’ve been into semi precious stone dangles.

  66. Alexandra says...

This summer I’ve been wearing oversized gold hoop earrings from Madewell! I always loved hoops but wasn’t sure if I could pull off big hoops until I finally just went for it. They feel so fun and make even a simple jean and T outfit feel stylish.

  67. Joanna Tsay says...

Omg this opal studs and what a stunning pic! When I am not terrified of my almost one year old ripping jewelry off my body, My favorite earrings are thin gold bar studs that look like staples. ¨̮

  68. Mel says...

I have sensitive skin so there are few earrings I can wear for more than one day at a time – until I found these sweet little studs from James Avery. They were a graduation gift to myself and I’ve barely taken them off in the year I’ve had them. https://www.jamesavery.com/products/rose-ear-posts?

  69. Ali B says...

I wish I was dressing like Seinfeld. Since I had my baby I look more like The Dude from The Big Lebowski. I think I’m beyond the point of earrings helping. They can only do so much 😊

    • KP says...

      Hahaha – well said

  70. Grace says...

Earrings are such a fun and quick way to change your outfit! I generally rotate through a tiny pair of white gold studs, diamond studs, pearl studs, or blue topaz studs (my birth stone). I am lusting after the Catbird pearl hoop earrings right now.

  71. Clare says...

My question: how do you STORE your earrings? I think I’d change mine up if I could see them out on my dresser!

    • FGB says...

I had the same problem! Now I have a frame with chicken wire where I hang all my non-stud earrings. I add pictures to the wire with tiny clothes pins and it actually looks super cute and I get a ton of complements on it. My commonly used stud earrings I keep in a little ceramic dish on my bedside table.

    • Maggie says...

YES!!!! Literally my thought reading this. If my earrings aren’t displayed, they are essentially bound for the same fate as random socks in the laundry: mysteriously just gone. I need a better set up.

    • Lana says...

For my birthday one year my husband made me an incredible earring board! He took an old 9X13 frame, removed the glass, then put this coarse fabric that sort of looks like heavy duty cheese cloth (I’m terrible with the names of fabrics lol!!) and stretched it over the cardboard frame backing and then put it into the frame. The outside of the frame is white shabby chic and the fabric is a dusty blue. I have it sitting on my dresser (you could also hang it on the wall!) and slide the backs of my dangly earrings through the fabric and keep them paired up. It’s amazing, looks lovely and makes storing my earrings so easy. For smaller post style earrings I just use a jewelry box.

    • Mary W says...

I have two shallow enamel dishes that I’ve picked up second-hand. One is for earrings with color, the other for gold/silver. It’s not strictly organized, but they’re out as a reminder and I get to use my beautiful enamel dishes.

    • Boerumama says...

I have two small boxes, one for silvery earrings and one for goldish earrings.

    • Cece says...

I store most of mine in a hanging organizer in my closet, but keep a few in a large shell I picked up at the beach on my dresser. So easy and so lovely, in my opinion! I keep a go-to pair out always, but rotate a few statement pairs every month or so to remind me to change it up!

    • SB says...

I turned an old frame into an earring hanger using window mesh – SO easy (seriously, a hit or two or gorilla glue). It hangs next to my dresser so I see it while I’m getting dressed. I wasn’t sure how I’d like it but it really helps me mix up what I wear and remember what I own!

    • Cynthia says...

I bought six clear plastic compartmentalized boxes from the dollar store and I put a pair or two in each compartment. I keep the boxes in my night stand drawer and I can see at a glance what I have.

    • mali says...

Yes! I also want ideas for earring storage!

  72. Sarah J says...

I’m actually reading this sitting in a tattoo parlour after being brave and getting my conch piercing done! After loving ear cuffs since I was a teenager (they look so effortlessly cool!) but not enjoying the sensation of having a hot ear while wearing one, I figured a piercing was the better way to go long term. I must admit though that at 28 it took me two years to brave up, and even then it was only because my sweet 19year old sister decided to get her helix pierced today with a friend. She got the first tattoo out of both of us, so I decided it was time to tag along and live my best brave life!
Yay to small exploratory steps towards becoming oneself, and also doing it unexpectedly – with gusto! (I even got my piercing done first!!)

  73. Christine says...

I’m a big fan of nickel and suede! Love their colors and the pop is an easy way to turn jeans and a tee into an “outfit”

  74. Meghan says...

Wearing my grandmother’s vintage gold hoops! They feel so on trend but classic and timeless too! I agree with them making me feel out together and it adds pizzazz to an otherwise plain wardrobe.

  75. Ingrid says...

I got my ears pierced when I was 18 and a college freshman. My dad was not happy. However, for Christmas that year, he gave me a pair of diamond stud earrings. I am 72 now, and for the last 50 years, I’ve worn those earrings every day. I always feel elegant in them, and my dad is still with me every day. (And the cost per wear must be minuscule:-)

    • Corbin says...

      This is lovely!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

that’s so sweet and touching, ingrid.

    • Robin says...

What a lovely story. Thank you for sharing it.

    • Caitlin says...

Wow, this story kind of took my breath away. Thanks for sharing!

    • I love this! I wear the diamond studs my grandparents gave me when I graduated high school every day since my early twenties when I temporary lost one right after my grandfather passed away. (So for about 20+ years now.) My parents got locking backs put on then so they wouldn’t accidentally come off again, and I realized life is short, so I just put them in my second holes and kept them in all the time. I too feel elegant in mine and love remembering how my grandparents gave them to me. And since 2014, I think, I have been wearing medium sized silver ball studs in my main earring hole. There’s no significance except they remind me of pearls in their vibe, but I can get them wet without problems, and it feels elegant and pretty to me, And it’s one last thing to think about, and I know I like the look and feel good in it. :)

    • Lauren Lyons says...

      I love this! Incredible!

    • Lana says...

How beautiful! My dad gave me my first pair of diamond studs and I still have them, too. It’s a tradition I hope to carry on with my girls.

Oh! This is awesome! And I also have a similar story.
When I graduated from university, my grandmother – a university professor – who managed to go back to school to complete her bachelors degree, then masters degree from an Ivy League school – not as easy feat for a single Mother from outport Newfoundland, and finally doctorate from England- all this to say how important education was to her and her son (my father)- asked me what I would like for a graduation present. I asked for a pair of diamond stud earrings. I have worn them every single day since they were purchased in 2004. My grandmother has since passed, but they are a daily reminder of her and the importance she instilled in us to work hard to achieve our dreams.
      From another Ingrid :)

I’m not wearing any. My ears have never been pierced. Always by choice. You see, until I was thirteen or so, I wore glasses and hearing aids daily. Both tend to weigh down the ears a lot. The last thing I wanted was more stuff on my ears.

When I stopped wearing glasses, which is a great story in and of itself, it was unique to NOT have one’s ears pierced. So I just never have.

For probably fifteen years now, I wear a necklace. I pick one out of my collection and wear it for a year or so at a time, day and night, showers, while sleeping, every outfit… You get the idea. The necklace is always short– not a choker, but so it can’t fit over my head on its own.

  77. I love LOVE my big statement earrings from Betsy&Iya and Natalie Joy. Both are Portland based designers and their pieces just go with everything from tees to black dresses. They’re large AND light so you can have a big impact without the drag. Today I got a piercing about halfway up my ear, inspired by Emily Schuman, and I feel pretty cool about myself. 😂

  78. My sister’s line! Augustandmae.com. They’re handmade with polymer clay and SO lightweight. I have a fear of my earlobes being stretched by heavy earrings but hers are so comfy!

    • Leah says...

Lightweight earrings are a must for me. Your sister’s jewelry is so pretty!

    • Cyn says...

Love these! Just ordered 2 pairs for my daughters birthday gift! So glad you mentioned them :)

  79. Colleen S says...

I’m wearing pink and white cubic zirconias (double ear piercings) that are in stainless steel studs. I’ve always been a big fan of studs, though I change up the colors.

  80. I wear my Smiley Studs by Sunday Feel nearly every day! I dig mismatched metals. These studs draw in the most interesting comments from young and old alike. Can’t help but smile at a smile! I am a Montessori teacher on maternity leave and these happy lil’ guys keep me feeling fun and connected to the classroom while I enjoy my baby son at home. Sunday Feel is a one woman show based out of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Mangie, you’re my hero! Check out her work! So fresh and fun!

After reading this beauty uniform post 3 years ago, https://cupofjo.com/2014/07/my-beauty-uniform-6/ I bought similar small gold bars and now I basically never take them off. I love them and while sometimes I still wear other earrings (hoops and pearl studs), I almost always end up wishing I was wearing my little gold bar earrings.

  83. Lindsay says...

I feel so pretty in dangly earrings! But I’ve had these gold heart studs in for like a year lol. From madewell.

  84. Isabelle says...

I wear a pair of mini stud pearl earrings that I never take off! Feels comfortable, because they are very light and are a little spark of contrast of white, I find it fresh and delicate and suits me, makes me happy!

  85. Roxanne says...

Rose gold hoops from LuxGoods Hardware a local jewelry company in Phoenix. They are my daily earrings that my curious 1 year old won’t pull out because they are small.

  86. LS says...

My ears aren’t pierced, but I came SO CLOSE to getting them done after seeing photos of young Ruth Bader Ginsberg in RBG with her 70’s hoop earrings (not to mention the hair scarves!). <3

  87. A says...

I am 30 and have never had my ears pierced. I go back and forth. My mom wouldn’t let me until I was 18, because she has regretted having hers pierced and says she only wears earrings so she won’t see the holes. I think it would be so fun to wear earrings! I imagine expressing myself with earrings but wonder if I would end up not even noticing them anymore and wearing the same ones all the time (especially since I have a baby). Also, I’ve gotten used to not having them pierced. It’s unusual and has been a sort of fun fact for me. Hmm…. this post definitely has me craving earrings again.

    • Christy says...

A, I totally get your story. One thing to consider is that, when your mom got her ears pierced, it may have been done differently. People used to get their ears pierced with a piercing gun, like the kind at the mall, which essentially rips a small hole in the ear. Today, if you go to a tattoo parlor, they use a small hollow needle that punctures a little hole. As a result, it’s a cleaner hole, and it might not be as noticeable. I don’t mean to over promise, but I just wonder if you’d be able to get a discrete hole today. And no one will be staring closely at your ear lobes anyway, if you’re not wearing earrings. :) Whatever you decide, enjoy it!

  88. Sarah Clews says...

I love earrings and I have a whole collection of mostly cheap ones. I really love leather earrings because they are so light.

    What perfect timing!

I recently was broken up with before going on a trip with my family and I decided on a little retail therapy the night before I left to try to zush up my travel wardrobe and lift my spirits.

I’m pretty frugal so I didn’t buy much, just two sets of earrings from madewell but man if they weren’t perfect. Every night when I’d get dressed for dinner I’d put on one of the pairs and think to myself, “I look fantastic!” The earrings and a little sun brought out my glow.

I buy all my earrings on Etsy. I put in handmade & minimalist or tiny earrings. I buy ones made in the USA and I love that they are made by a real person! I often get a personal thank you note along with the earrings.

  91. BB says...

When my ears were pierced as a child, they didn’t do them symmetrically and one ear is pierced close to the bottom. It makes wearing larger earrings uncomfortable and even the smallest earrings hang off the edge on that side. Any ideas on how to rectify this as an adult? It’s always bothered me, and probably far too late for them to close naturally and have them pierced again.

    • Sara B says...

I’m 35 and I had to have my right ear re-pierced a couple years ago after not wearing earrings for awhile. I would maybe go to a tattoo/piercing shop and ask what they think about it

  92. M says...

i have this awesome pair of earrings my sister’s girlfriend bought for me as a bday gift, I have no idea where she got them from but I wear them whenever I want to dress up my look. As for my everyday earrings the studs and hoops from the LA online retailer The Last Line are everything. Elevated basics at (semi) reasonable price points for real diamonds and jewels. THISISTHELAST.COM —- be warned once you start shopping on their site you won’t be able to stop. Also as a fun fact, while they’re trying to grow their brand they often offer “piercing parties” in whatever city they’re visiting in a given month.

Oh Joanna…my not-so-dirty secret is that I am a bit of a jewelry ho… Today I’m wearing local SF designer Mabel Chong’s Druzy Baguette earrings. I love…

After years of collecting beautiful earrings, which a special love for Native American silver & turquoise, my ears began to react to absolutely everything and I had to get them grow back. I’m in the process of carefully selecting deserving recipients of my favorites but it makes me sad to let them go.

    • Leah says...

You may want to keep your favorites. I went through a period in my 30’s when I suddenly could not wear any metal in my ears except stainless steel. I switched out all my dangly earrings with new ear wires, but after a few years, I was able to wear silver and gold again. I’m 53 now and haven’t had a problem since.

  95. Ashley says...

I have like 10 pairs of gold earrings that I cycle through, but recently I’ve been into the idea of mother-of-pearl earrings — I’m seeing them everywhere!

  96. Zoe P says...

I love those wooden Sophie Monet earrings! My friend also carries them in her online shop: https://www.shophsmith.com/collections/jewelry

Diamond studs my husband bought me for our wedding. I have worn them almost everyday for the last 9 years!

  98. NancyD says...

Diamond studs in upper lobe (wear them 24/7). Black Hoops made of wood. I have several sizes and colors of wooden hoops. Love how light weight they are.

  99. Jessica says...

Previously I would wear a pair of small simple diamond studs everyday or occasionally a small gold ball stud. However since becoming a mom, earrings are a memory of the past for me. Looking forward to getting back into jewelry when she’s older though!

    • Ser says...

I’m wearing Sicilian gold and diamond earrings that are over 200 years old . I saw them in the window of an antique jewelry store in Taormina and they bought about them all the next day. So glad I invested . Everyone comments on them. I like to imagine the little girl who wore them ( all siciliana have pierced ears from birth) and wore them til she was an old lady.

  100. Kathy R says...

My mom passed away in late March. We have recently started going through her jewelry (there’s so much!). I have been wearing her earrings non-stop the last few weeks. Mostly a medium size pair of gold hoops. So not something I would normally wear- but it’s a piece of her!

    • Jessica says...

That’s beautiful. Jewelry is so personal and unique to a person. Such a lovely way to stay connected to her memory everyday.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

How lovely, Kathy. I’m so sorry about your mom.

    • Leah says...

I am so sorry for your loss. My mother passed away in February after battling cancer for 6 months. Before she died we went through her jewelry together, along with my sister and niece. Some of the pieces are so her and it’s comforting and bittersweet to have them.

  101. Jess says...

I have been rocking a pair of simple, small gold hoops from Melissa Joy Manning for YEARS. I just don’t tire of them and they look simple and sophisticated with absolutely everything.

    • Lindsay says...

I’ve been wanting small gold hoops! I’ll check those out

    • Julie says...

I’m saving for some of her earrings! I love just about everything in her shop.

Usually Laura Lombardi hoops (I have three pairs/sizes because I love them so much! the Mini Curve ones are perfect for every day) or Leah Alexandra studs.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      I love Laura Lombardi too!

  103. Katie says...

I’m currently wearing the tiniest gold and rainbow-gem hoops that hug my ears. I love them. I made it 18 months breast feeding, and I treated myself to these pretties as a ” you go Mama” present.

    • Jenn says...

Most days I’ll wear something classic like pearls or gold hoops that my aunt gave me 20 years ago. I love statement earrings, too. I have a pair that are acrylic and look like malachite and a pair of hoops with colorful beads by Mata Traders in the heavy rotation right now.

  104. Cynthia says...

    Diamond studs- almost always!

  105. Jill says...

    Jennifer Fisher hoops everyday!

  106. Amanda says...

So I’m sure it’s old news but Joanna, which replacement wedding ring did you end up with?

    • A. says...

Yes! I’ve been so curious about this as well.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

I ended up finding my ring!! :)

  107. Allison says...

I like to wear earrings by local artists. Craft fairs or guild shops or art galleries are good places to find them and they’re much more special to my mind than even the prettiest mass-produced jewellery and just as much variety of price point too. Right now I’m wearing some silver ravens by a Haida artist.

  108. Rikki says...

I wear super thin gold hoops – tiny enough that they barely go around my earlobe. I love them so so much and haven’t taken them off in a year and a half! If I want to wear other earrings, I just add them to the hole :) You can hardly tell I’m wearing two pairs at a time.

    1. Little gold circles with a little white enamelled star hanging. They are new, bought in a local shop, these stars make me feel dreamy and magic and hopeful in a very low profile moment.
    2. Long silver bars ending with a malachite ball a friend gave to me as a present a few years ago: they make me feel tougher than the rest while I’m experiencing the weakness of my body for the first time.
    3. Mismatched tropical birds theme earrings I’ve been wearing since high school: a wooden parrot from Costa Rica (I’ve lost the other one) + a wooden toucan (I think I’ve always had only one). They make me feel me, they are me.

  110. witloof says...

About 18 years ago one of my friends gave me the most beautiful pair of drop earrings I had ever seen. I told her she didn’t have to give me another present ever again, because she would never give me anything I liked better. For my next birthday she gave me the same pair, but with different stones. I love them both so much! I have dozens of pairs of earrings but I wear one or the other of them almost all the time. I still get tons of compliments when I have them on. When I want to look authoritative I wear pearl studs. I’m going on vacation and I am NOT wearing them because I am so afraid of losing them.

I LOVE costume earrings, and buy almost all of them from this little vintage shop by my parent’s house in MD (you have to dig through to find the gems, but they sell a few rotating pairs online too. https://www.vintagevaultandgallery.com/) Or make them! I have a lot of little tomatoes, cherries, zigzags, that I’ve made from sculpey and cheap earring backs and sealed with clear nail polish — people are so surprised!

Gold Tiffany beans, almost every day for 16 years. I used to wear silver jewelry all through my 20’s and my husband gave me the gold beans for my 30th birthday, about two weeks after he gave me his mother’s gold engagement ring. The ring/earrings, plus my wedding band, is all the jewelry I wear. I love them more dearly with every passing day.

  114. Erin G. says...

These are all lovely choices and earrings are one of the few things I don’t leave home without! May I add: there are so, so many amazing jewelry designers/makers that price their handmade-with-love earrings (often using recycled and ethically sourced materials) at about the same price points as these bigger retailers (I realize not all pairs listed here are from “big” stores – but most are) and you could support a female artist while sporting some beautiful ear art!

    Love,

  115. Anna says...

Oooh, I love earrings, and I am just getting back in to changing mine sometimes after having kids and wearing the same gold studs for years. Now, I love these studs (which are a nicer quality dupe of a pair from Madewell), and I was inspired to get them by this CoJ post. But I also I love leverback earrings and french hooks with a simple jewel, and I like to coordinate them with my outfits because I am an old lady (I’m not). I like the chunky tortoiseshell and wood hoops that are trending now, might have to get in on that.

    • Kelly says...

      Wow, Kate, those are stunning!!

    • Kristin says...

      These are gorgeous!

  116. Ariana says...

Yes! Earrings are my primary jewelry. I usually keep it fairly understated but every so often like to make a bigger statement. My faves, though, are a simple, beautiful pair of natural drop pearls that my husband bought me as a wedding gift on our honeymoon in Croatia. I wear those so often and love the memory as much as the look.

    • Kate says...

I have pearl studs that my husband bought for me on our honeymoon as well and every time I wear them it brings back such good memories :):)

  117. Roxana says...

Ooooh! I like the earrings you’re sporting! Love the yellow gold and pearl combo.

I’ve been wearing small, but thicker, yellow gold hoops that my youngest son can’t rip out of my ears ;). I wear them with jeans and tees (and sneakers or Chacos – bright red!) and then when I’m “dressed-up” for work meetings or church.

  118. Mk says...

I used to have these light good hoops that I liked to wear and then one day one got lost on the streets of London. They were a gift and I can’t find another pair I like as much. It is tough because I can only wear real gold backings or my ears break out (they can’t even be plated). I also loved those earrings because I could wear them multiple days in a row. Now I have to take a day off in between wearing earrings.

    • Christina says...

Hi MK! I’m like you, can only wear real gold. I found these and love them. I wear them every day and also sleep in them maybe 4 nights a week? I’ve been wearing them for about 5 months with no issues. They don’t have a backing – they just spiral in and stay put. It’s a little tricky the first time but you’ll get it. https://mejuri.com/shop/products/spiral-earrings

  120. I’d love to hear recs for good, not-your-grandma’s clip-ons! I’ve pierced my ears three different times (childhood, middle school, adult) and my body just rejects it. I miss wearing earrings!

    • Alexandria says...

I don’t have pierced ears, so I buy clip on converters from the craft store. Then you take whatever earrings you want to wear and convert them. Some styles work better than others, but everyone is always surprised when I tell them I wear clip ons!

    • Jen says...

      Seconding this!

    • Kelly says...

A lot of couture brands make clip ons and you can get them used on TheRealReal!

    • Sarz says...

Joy, have you tried Ebay? I’d say my greatest score was a pair of knotted silver Tiffany clip-ons. I believe they were about $20. If you’ve got the time to “dig”, I’m confident you’ll find a pair that speaks to you!

  121. Helen says...

My ear piercings grew back in but if my ears were pierced I’d love to wear History+Industry pieces. They’re sculptural and unique, each a little work of Art. Luckily the maker designs necklaces too!

  122. Dee says...

I’m a classics girl and always will be! For my 40th I wanted a really special item that I could wear till I’m a hundred, and I ended up choosing rose gold Tiffany Paloma hoops while in Venice with my mom and siblings – we have also never done that kind of vacation together. I wear them every day and I love to think back to the family moments we experienced, and how much joy we found in each other’s company. I come from a large family and we grow closer with every passing decade.
