A Week of Outfits: Katie Sturino

We’re long-time fans of Katie Sturino, the woman behind the fashion blog The 12ish Style and the Megababe body-care brand. Katie is known for recreating celebrity outfits with plus-size pieces that prove how easy (and fun!) fashion can be. Her fashion motto is simple: “I just wear what makes me happy.” Here, she shares five of her favorite looks…

A Week of Outfits: Katie Sturino

Top: KULE, similar. Leggings: Girlfriend Collective, similar. Sneakers: Reebok.

“It took me a while to find striped tops like this in my size, and then I found these ones from KULE. They’re actually from the men’s collection. And the Reeboks are awesome — I love a pump sneaker. They’re super supportive, which is important for me. I have bad feet so I’m really lucky the whole ugly-sneaker trend is still happening.”

A Week of Outfits: Katie Sturino

Blazer: LOFT. Tee: Giovanna Engelbert. Pants: LOFT. Bag: Parker Thatch, similar. Pom: Parker Thatch, similar. Shoes: Naturalizer.

“I love a suit, especially if I have a meeting. I’ve noticed everyone’s making check-print suits lately, and I was excited to try one, but I also wanted to make it feel like my own — hence the T-shirt, the shoes, the monogrammed bag. I’m very into these low, white heels, which remind me of my mom’s work shoes from the 80s. I’m constantly looking for shoes for big feet, since I wear a size 12. Naturalizer makes nice simple flats that don’t feel cheap. For heels, my go-to is Margaux. They have a great range of sizes.”

A Week of Outfits: Katie Sturino

Jacket: ASOS. Sweater: Polo Ralph Lauren. Pants: LOFT, similar. Shoes: Grenson.

“This is the kind of outfit I’d wear for pretty much anything — walking the dogs, going to dinner, whatever. I love everything about it: the bright pants, the nostalgic teddy bear sweater (if you grew up in the 80s, you might know that bear!). I’m also wearing my Megababe products, which I created to help with boob sweat and thigh chafe. I was tired of using men’s products or weird hacks, and when I looked at the market, I realized that no one is talking about these types of problems because the people in charge don’t think they exist. Women are told they should be aiming for a thigh gap… so why would anyone need an anti-friction stick? That type of thinking leaves women feeling alone and that somehow their bodies are wrong. Megababe aims to not only de-stigmatize these issues, but also our name is empowering and our packaging is cute. There is nothing shameful about it!”

A Week of Outfits: Katie Sturino

Sweater: J.Crew. Skirt: Madewell. Sunglasses: Forever 21. Earrings: Christie Nicolaides. Lips pin: Yazbukey. Tote: Fendi, similar. Shoes: Margaux.

“I’ve noticed a lot of plus-size women steer clear of pencil skirts because they think they’ll be too form fitting or that they’ll look weird on their bodies. I totally disagree. And same with sweaters! We’re told not to wear big sweaters like this, because it’ll be ‘bulky.’ Personally, I love the look of this outfit. It’s put together but also so, so cozy. What I really like is that it breaks all those so-called rules. Some of my favorite places to shop are Madewell extended, Warp and Weft jeans, Good American jeans, 11 Honoré and CoEdition.”

A Week of Outfits: Katie Sturino

Coat: J.Crew, similar. Sweater: Lingua Franca. Skirt: Sonia Rykiel, similar. Socks: Ban.do. Shoes: Naturalizer.

“As you can see, I like my colors BRIGHT. Fashion often pushes women — especially plus-size women — to wear black. Like we’re supposed to hide inside that lack of color. I have plenty of friends who do prefer to wear all black or all grey, but that’s just not my vibe. There is no destination when it comes to size. So often women live as if life will start when they lose 10 pounds or if they achieve a certain pant size. The truth is that if you don’t accept your body as you are, you will never get off the merry go round. I just wear what makes me happy.”

Thank you so much, Katie!

P.S. More women share their weeks of outfits, including an architect who loves color and a marketing manager in Oregon.

(Photos by Christine Han for Cup of Jo. Thank you to Katie’s three rescue dogs — Muppet, Cheese and Crumb — for modeling:)

  1. Lisa says...

I so absolutely admire you. Thank you for the job you, do, I’m 14/16 and have so many issues it hurts to live. Thank you again, hugs, kisses, rays of admiration.

  2. Mrs D says...

Katie, you look INCREDIBLE! Polished, colourful, confident. Love love love!

  3. Kelly P says...

OMG the last outfit! LOVE! Pink on pink on pink. I always lean toward black, but that outfit just makes me so happy! Thanks for the reminder :-)

  4. LK says...

OH SHIT i love Katie Sturino!!!!

  5. Katherine says...

I’ve even following Katie for awhile now and even though I’m a size 6, she is endlessly inspiring in terms of confidence, fashion and honesty….she has such amazing style that I’m working my way up to, I only wear black. She talks honestly about her fight for fashion that works for her and I feel this personally all the time. Even though I can find clothes that “fit” me, they don’t look the way they do in the ads, they don’t fit me well, so I hate shopping too. But she just doesn’t give up and keeps trying until she finds things she likes. I just hide behind black layers and give up. She wears such bright beautiful colors that I would never let myself wear because I don’t think I would look good enough. Well, Katie, I’m working on it. Thank you for being such a huge inspiration to so many.

  6. Mary says...

You are a breath of fresh air!
    Love color!

  7. Robin says...

Eeeee I love her. That all yellow outfit! And the pink and red one! Love love love. A superhero for our times ;)

  8. Mira says...

She’s serving up looks in all these outfits, but I have to say she looks drop-dead gorgeous in that last photo!

  9. Alice C says...

Love Katie so. This is what got me:
“So often women live as if life will start when they lose 10 pounds or if they achieve a certain pant size. The truth is that if you don’t accept your body as you are, you will never get off the merry go round. I just wear what makes me happy.”

I used to feel that ‘life will start’ or ‘I will wear’ vibe, and wore loads of black. Now I feel less like that and wear so much colour, especially red, that I will actually become a tomato soon. Life is for living, clothes are for enjoying, anxiety already rules too much, it shouldn’t rule the way we dress too.

  10. Sharon says...

I always love these posts, but I felt like this one lacked some of the normal details in writing. I wish there were more words about the “why” and additional tips for dressing and her style. Still love all of these posts, but miss all the detail we normally see. Curious minds love to know more about your beautiful subjects ;-)

  11. Noa says...

Joanna & co, I think you could do a great week of outfits featuring mum-daughter duo Elisa Goodkind and Lily Mandelbaum of StyleLikeU. Katie’s fearlessness with color and unabashed body positivity reminds me of them. Thanks for the great content, I’m feeling so inspired to bust out my boldest colours and take spring by storm!

  12. Carmen Tomas says...

so many juicy nuggets of inspo in here.

  13. I looove her! Her instagram is so fun and inspiring.

(May I make a recommendation? Aja Barber week of outfits please!)

  14. Heather says...

Yes!!! Love this woman so much

  15. L says...

Babe alert! I love, love, love her confidence (and especially that last outfit)! I wish I had the confidence to wear any of it.

  16. MelTown says...

I love her comments on wearing what makes you happy. I spent years sticking to clothes that were “flattering” which I now realize meant “attractive for men.” Today I’m wearing pants that are honestly not sexy at all but I love them, they make me happy, and because of that I feel really beautiful. My only hope is that I can teach my daughters these lessons before they reach their 30s.

    • Ash says...

      Hey Meltown,
I remember reading a quote on Pinterest that said “Pretty is not the rent you pay to exist in the world as a woman”. Well this statement just about knocked my socks off! I seriously had never considered that I didn’t have to strive to be pretty…I had just always existed in a weird limbo of ‘trying’. Definitely a lesson worth sharing with your daughters – Love!

  17. Nina says...

I love her sweater outfit with the pencil skirt. I’m also plus size and have always worn bright colors. I dated this guy once who invited me to a St. Patrick’s Day parade and then rolled his eyes when I showed up in my bright lime green jacket…and mumbled “you couldn’t wear something more subdued?” um no…next…

  18. sarah says...

I’m a big fan of Katie Sturino’s. She has a great sense of humour and a really good eye for fashion, even if she wears things I wouldn’t necessary like on myself. Along with other role models like Rachel Bloom she has made me feel much more confident and bolder about my body type and my clothes.
I’m always trying to find someone like her to follow in Switzerland, so I can actually find the clothes and copy them :)
But I don’t think personnalities like hers really exist here ha

  19. Em says...

Love the bright colors! I tend to stick to gray and muted tones, but I’ve been feeling an itch to incorporate more color into my life. I guess winter will do that to you.

Side note- does anyone have any reviews on KULE? I almost bought something from there, but then didn’t because of the price. If I knew that they had quality pieces, I’d be more inclined. I’m looking to incorporate more pieces that will last into my wardrobe. I feel like it’s always such a risk when you are buying from new brands!

  20. Janey says...

I also love bright colours – love all Katies’s outfits, especially the pinks on the bottom pic. Such a happy outfit! Super cute dogs too

  21. claudia says...

What I like the most about these articles is no matter their ages, sizes or their fashion sense they all look so CONFIDENT and CONFORTABLE! this is the ultimate goal and these women are equally inspiring to me so thanks for sharing!

  22. So excited to see another of my faves on CoJ! Katie’s Instagram is the best!

  23. Jackie says...

Can someone PLEASE tell me where her couch is from? Thanks!

    • Barbara Emmanuel says...

Ditto! I love her couch and I’d love a link! Katie is GORGEOUS and style and colors make me happy!

    • Kelly says...

Totally! It is perfection! Could it be restoration hardware?

    • Katie Sturino says...

It’s from Wayfair and I’m actually getting a new couch! DM me!!

  24. Susan says...

I LIVE for the Week of Outfits posts, and this one is my favorite yet. She is gorgeous and so bright!

  25. Bernadette says...

Oh my Gosh I love this lady! Thrilled to see her here! Way to go – cup of jo!!!!
    Xoxo

  26. Elisa says...

Loved this! I’m not plus-sized, but I do have big boobs and curves and basically just wear jeans, a black top and flats everyday. It was interesting to see how she styled her curves. It seems like so many features like this feature small chested willowy or otherwise incredibly skinny women. So happy to see this!

  27. Chelsea says...

OH MY GOSH recommendations for those of us with big feet! As a size 11, it just feels sometimes like the world does not give a shit about making nice shoes for bigger feet. So a giant heartfelt thank you to Katie! Fingers crossed they ship to Canada.

    • Anna Skinner says...

Size 12 here! I second your comment! Quick question for Katie: Are the Grenson brogues men’s or women’s shoes? I couldn’t find them in a size 12 in women’s on their site, and I have a longing for a pair of brogues.

  28. Jo says...

So so happy to see size 12 shoes!

  29. Ellie says...

    I love her.

  30. Emily says...

I gasped out loud at the last picture – I love that outfit (and photo) so much! Totally the kind of thing I’d try on, love, and then not buy because I’d be afraid I couldn’t pull it off. Looks amazing on you, Katie! Now excuse me, I’m off to buy a bright pink skirt.

  31. Midge says...

    Love this!

  32. Loved this. I’m a solid Katie fan. Her Megababe chafe stick is the key to summer happiness and her IG recs helped me to find Third Love bras which really work for me. Thanks, C of J; this was great!

  33. Kaye B says...

Love her! I also love her Megababe products, especially the Thigh Rescue. Don’t need it often but when I do it doesn’t let me down! Also I adore my Third Love bras. It might take a while to find your exact fit but they will help you if what you order isn’t exactly perfect.

  34. Rhonda says...

Thank you for having Katie Sturino! I LUUUURVE her and think she is so fun and real. I was really excited to see her face (and dog) pop up on my screen!

  35. caitlin says...

Yes to so much of this! I love her fun approach to fashion and not caring about the rules. After years of soft colors and neutrals, worrying about what looked nice but not too attention grabbing, I’ve recently started to say “eff it” and wear whatever I want. Which means bringing in a lot more color and a lot more funky! I’ll definitely be following Katie for more style inspiration!

  36. Lauren Callaway says...

I love this and love her. Naturalizer shoes are a revelation.

  37. Anna says...

I love this! Katie is so fun.

  38. I just love her style!!! Thanks for such a great post!

  39. Maia says...

    What a colorful babe.

  40. Tara says...

    Love everything!!!

  41. Kate says...

Love this post and all of the yellow! But honestly, the main thing I noticed was this: Katie’s boobs look fabulous and oh-so supported! Can COJ please do a post on bras? I feel like women of any size will appreciate the guidance (and please don’t make it a sponsored post by Thirdlove – they are not the best out there based on personal experience).

    • Jenny says...

Katie posts a lot about getting all her bras from ThirdLove, if that helps!

    • I totally agree about Katie’s boobs!! They look 100!! Would LOVE some big-boob bra guidance since my post-kid boobs are totallyyyyy different haha

    • Meg says...

I need good bra advice in my life right now! Ever since I stopped nursing my boobs are more droopy than they used to be and I can’t find a bra that’s comfortable! My underwire gets caught under my DDs (think the “pencil test” -ugh- but with the underwire or band if no wire) I’ve accepted that my body has changed but I would like to be comfortable! Maybe a “Your Bra Problems Solved” post?

    • LM says...

If you live in the PNW or just need an excuse to visit, go to The Pencil Test! They carry over a hundred sizes D-cup and up. All types…regular bras, bralette, nursing bras, sports bras and swim. They also have a great Instagram with pics of the bras on real people to give you ideas about what brands to shop.

  42. Steph says...

Love Naturalizer and Clarks for consistently carrying up to size 12. I grew up thinking of them as a “comfort” brand but they’re making some seriously cute stuff right now. My wide 10.5’s are grateful.

  43. Em says...

I love Katie! She’s so iconic — her style, her attitude, and what she’s doing for inclusion in fashion. Total game changer!

And she rescues puppies. The woman’s super.

  44. Julie E says...

    I freaking love her.

  45. Caitlyn says...

Those striped socks with the shoes!!! My jaw actually dropped I love it so much!!!!

  46. Emily Honeycutt says...

You are just what this world needs! So refreshing!! I love your style and solutions!

  47. Kim says...

I LOVE her use of color. Looking at her style makes me feel happy. That yellow is pure joy.

  48. mb says...

Pardon my cavalier attitude (pun!) and disregard for the “fashion” conversation going on in the comments to ask: What about the dogs?!?! so cute! That first pic with the tongue slightly peeking out! I love them!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

Yes the sweetest!!!! she has three rescue dogs xoxo

  49. Jessica says...

She was on Garance’s site last week, too.

Sometimes the world seems a little too small – like, there are so many plus size women with great style, why is this one in two places at once? I start thinking more about what product she might be pushing, instead of her style.

    But maybe that’s just me?

    • Joanna Goddard says...

Thank you! I think it was a coincidence that she was on Garances at the same time — we actually did this shoot back in the fall. Katie is featured, by us at least, because she’s so informed and vocal about the plus-size fashion industry — and what inclusive measures still needs to be taken, in terms of brands, products, wedding lines, etc. She’s a great resource and spokesperson in that way. Hope that helps!

  50. Geri says...

Katie is a beautiful inspiration! I’ve recently discovered plus size Loft (her yellow pants AND the suit!) and it is life changing. Finally clothing that is on trend and fits at an affordable price point. Hurray for body acceptance and confidence.

  51. E says...

I love everything about her and this! The last outfit with the plink jacket, red skirt, and ankle socks with dress shoes is so amazing on Katie! Also bravo on the idea of resisting wearing things that make women of any size look bulky… we are allowed to take up space!!! Katie’s philosophy and her whole look reminded me to dress for “I am HERE and I’m GORGEOUS!” like she does.

    • Megan says...

DITTO to all this! And I absolutely love that last photo–what a BOSS.

  52. Sasha L says...

I’m reassessing all the black and grey in my wardrobe. All of the color Katie wears is just so cheerful. Love this post, thanks for the inspiration and especially the wear what makes you happy. Yes.

  53. Yael says...

I hope this is not an overly intrusive question – could we find out where Katie gets her bras? I’m a curvy young woman in need of new bras…and Katie and her breasts look great and really well fitted if I may say so! Would love her go tos :)

    • Danielle says...

On her instagram, it looks like she’s a spokesperson for Third Love

    • Good question!

  54. Anne Dyer says...

I just adore you Katie. You’re awesome!

  55. Lucy says...

Amen on the pencil skirts. I find they look good on any body type and are both fashionable and professional. I might have one in almost every color from J. Crew and it is basically my work uniform. Great post, and love Katie!

  56. Amanda says...

Love Katie! Thanks for including such an authentic voice in this series!

  57. I really loved this post! Bright colors + curves = inspirational for me.

  58. JT says...

I have been stalking her IG for a while and I adore her. Such a role model!

  59. Erin says...

I love this post! Re. the fabulous red lipstick she’s wearing with the blazer-t shirt combo: Could we please have a Cup of Jo post about how to pick red lipstick? Do you just have to go to Sephora and try on nine million shades? How do you find one that looks bright and fun but doesn’t wash you out or make you appear to be the star of a clown show? What shades of red suit which skin tones? How much other makeup do you have to wear on the rest of your face to avoid looking like you accidentally fell, mouth first, onto a red marker? I am so confused!

    • Bea says...

This, please! I want to wear red lip stick, but I can’t figure out what color. I even tried the trip to Sephora, but I walked away overwhelmed. Help!

    • Alison says...

      I second this!

    • caitlin says...

      yes please!

    • Heather says...

Third! So many of the amazing women featured on the blog seem to have the confident and fun red lip thing going on. I would love to know their tips!

  60. Kara says...

Obsessed with her style! My favorite look was the one that broke all those so-called “rules,” the pencil skirt + sweater. I audibly oohed and ahhed!

  61. Alyssa says...

Megababe’s bust dust is truly one of the greatest invention. Regular baby powder just doesn’t work for me. But this stuff is like a miracle product and it smells nice. :)

  62. Amanda says...

I love every outfit Katie puts together. Seriously, every look is a winner! I wish I’d had her as a model of inspiration when I was a teen in the 90s. Better late than never.

  63. Your fashion choices are amazing. I’m in love with the mustard sweater and pencil skirt and grey suit with the T-shirt. Both are so cute and casual but you can still wear them on a business lunch meeting and look bad-ass.

  64. jenn says...

i love her look, and i LOVE the ‘more is more’ tee..but holy shit, $160? wooof.

  65. Laura C says...

YES KATIE! So happy to see her! Would love to see a home tour too– that couch, those pillows, beautiful windows. I’m already in love <3

    • Sarah says...

YESSSS I agree! That is the couch I want in my life, with those exact pillows!

  66. jillian bedell says...

a funny or cool tshirt with a blazer is basically all I want from fashion.

    • kaela d. says...

      This! Quintessential cool. :)

    • S says...

Can we get a cool graphic tee post! Always looking for fun options with personality. The current fav in my closet is a retro ringer red and white tee that says “Lasagna Del Rey” :)

  67. Kelly says...

I just sent a link to this post, MegaBabe, and her fashion blog to friends. Thank you to introducing me to a new wonderful person! I can always rely on CoJ to feature great people.

  68. Hani says...

    HERE FOR THIS!

  69. Andrea says...

Oh my god– I’m her biggest superfan. I LOVE THIS. She is kind of my dream friend.

  70. liz says...

    love these!!! She’s awesome!

  71. Erin G. says...

Yessssss! Didn’t even realize I was waiting for this – I’ve been following Katie in IG for a long time and she remains one of my faves. She’s an inspiration for all women to just love the body you got – it’s your one and only! Thanks CoJ.

  72. AY says...

YASSS. I’ve followed and loved Katie’s Insta for ages. What an amazing role model, and feature on COJ. This brightened my day so much, I *almost* thought it was Friday! <3

  73. Laura C. says...

    She’s stunning.

  74. Danielle says...

I love how she uses color! I have some yellow pieces, but can’t figure how to mix them up (top + jeans) – thanks for the inspiration!

  75. Cynthia says...

I like bright colors too, and she looks great in all her outfits. I really like bright colors during the winter when everyone else wears black, brown, and navy. Pencil skirts are slenderizing, and since I’m short, they make me look taller. I, too, wear what makes me happy.

  76. Hannah says...

What a STUNNER! That last outfit is just striking, and her interview is one of my very favorites of this whole series. Thank you for featuring Katie!!

  77. Lindsay says...

I love Katie and follow her on Instagram. She is such an inspiring person to have in my feed and I feel like a proud friend seeing her work get noticed more and more.

I’ve also used almost every product Megababe makes and they are truly fabulous! Every time I see someone in the comments here talk about thigh chafe and men’s gold bond whatever I think “more women need to know about Megababe!”
(all her products smell so good too!)

    • rebecca says...

Totally agree! My counter has all three products and my husband even shares one :) Katie is the best thing on the internet right now- I was so excited to see this come up in my feed today! She has really inspired me to wear more options and walk around with confidence in them.

  78. Katrina says...

“So often women live as if life will start when they lose 10 pounds or if they achieve a certain pant size.”
I wish this didn’t resonate with me so much. It reminds me of my mom and the other women who were my role models growing up.

    • Becky says...

Me too. Sigh. It wasnt until I was an adult that I found positive women role models. Average everyday women. The way it should be. I love them. It’s hard to unlearn the past

    • Katrina says...

Becky — yes! And I wish there was something I could say that would help them unlearn it too.

  79. Martha L. says...

I love her use of color! She’s very inspiring, particularly for summer!

  80. Ah! I’m having so much yellow envy. I have pale skin and brown hair and I’ve never found a golden shade that looks good on me. You’re gorg, Katie! ❤️

P.S. Your pups are precious 🐶🐶

    • Heather says...

I think wearing those colors farther from your face (like Katie does in those two outfits with yellow pants) can help. I love mustard-colored clothes but they don’t love me back, so I wear them on the bottom half with a more flattering shade (like navy or light blue) on top.

    • Andrea says...

I have the same problem. If you have olive undertones to your skin, yellow can be so problematic. Even demure gold jewelry makes me look jaundiced.

I have found that super bright yellow and acid yellow is OK. Like the Waffle House sign yellow.

    • Elizabeth says...

Me too, Bec! I’ve always wanted to be able to wear yellow. Thanks for the tips, Heather!

  81. Gaylen says...

TWO tri color cavaliers. My favorite dog of my entire life. Andy, I still love and miss you…..

    • EliseB says...

Style and colors are super. But the dogs!!!!!!!!!! One Cavalier is fabulous, two even better. Folks., these are the sweetest, easiest dogs ever. There is one at my feet right now. Gaylen, I hope you get another.

  82. Barb says...

Mega babe indeed! Loved her attitude, her colorful choices, her vibe, everything! I loved seeing my own similarly sized body reflected here.

  83. Marisa says...

Me too!!!!!!!!!!!! Her style and attitude are GREAT!

  84. I love how she puts colors together! Also, I have big feet, too, so it’s nice to hear her recommendations for where to shop.

  85. Kathryn says...

I really like all the colours! But I have to ask – is the bag in the second-last picture supposed to have a face?? Because it looks really excited!

  86. Katie Peshek says...

What a thrill to see Katie featured on Cup of Jo! I have followed her on IG and absolutely admire her style and confidence. Thank you for featuring women of all shapes and sizes – it means so much to see my own size 14 body reflected positively in what I read online.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

so glad! she is amazing and hilarious in real life, too.

  87. Emily says...

THRILLED to see Katie on Cup of Jo! I listened to an interview with her on the Girls Gotta Eat podcast last summer and have been enjoying following her on Instagram ever since. I will try Megababe soon–in particular the deodorant :)

    • Gabrielle says...

I LOOOVE Megababe deodorant. Also, Katie is slaying it in that chunky sweater/pencil skirt combo!

  88. lisa says...

    i love her!!!!!!!

    • BeckyB says...

This might be weird but…Does she have bra recs? Her boobs look amazing! After 5+ years of nursing and being substantially endowed, I’d buy anything she said is great if it made my breasts look that awesome!

    • BeckyB, people above are saying ThirdLove bras! I’m a big fan, check them out!
