How to Dress Like a Celebrity

Katie Sturino supersize the look

Katie Sturino, the founder of beauty brand Megababe (of thigh-chafe stick fame), has an Instagram series where she recreates the looks of celebrities. “I started the series to show women of all sizes that they can pull off the styles of super fashionable women they’re inspired by,” she says. Take a look…

I love how Katie mimics the stars in her photos — from the way they walk to how they hold their coffee. “It’s very funny doing the same poses,” she told me. “I have perfected my politely-avoiding-the-paparazzi face.”

Bonus: it’s like having a free stylist. “Celebrities often pay people to put clothing together for them,” Katie told me. “Why reinvent the wheel? If a stylist put it together, the work is already done for you.”

When finding her own pieces, Katie’s go-to brands are CoEdition, Second Sight, J. Crew, Eloquii, Mara Hoffman and Good American.

Her favorite look? “I loved Chrissy Teigen’s white-blazer-and-jeans look, which I have taken into my real life quite often.”

When Katie recreates a couple’s style, she calls in her bff Ryan Dziadul, another fashion blogger. “We never usually touch, so when we have to hold hands we giggle the entire time about how sweaty we are,” she laughs.

  1. Great clothes with style that can be worn no matter what size or age you are, timeless! :)

  2. Annie says...

Love! She picked outfits that actually work in real life for most people and pulls them off flawlessly. I also noticed the confidence that comes through with both the celebrity and the blogger…and important reminder that if you dress in a way that makes you feel confident, that will come across to anyone who sees you!

  3. Hilarious! Makes me think it actually easy to be stylish, just copy them!

  4. Shannon Bell says...

Love it! Also a reminder that 85 percent of the whole thing is your confidence, no matter what you’re wearing! I remember figuring that out with all of Carrie Bradshaw’s outfits… sometimes it would be really mystifying how one came about putting those outfits together (and sometimes really REALLY mystifying), but she always rocked them and it was because of they WAY she rocked them! Katie totally makes all of these looks her own with her own special eye twinkle and it just reminds us all we can look great in our pyjamas if only we also feel like a movie star. :)

  5. Kirsten says...

Oh my gosh I LOVE this. Katie is gorgeous. Often she looks better than the celeb she’s mimicking!

  6. Perdy Andrews says...

This is the best! She looks gorgeous and can we please talk about her hair?! L-O-V-E.
    Thanks for posting!

  7. Justine says...

I think Reese Witherspoon reads Cup of Jo…I went to this Instagram and Reese had commented on all the times Katie copied her outfits…She commented this afternoon! Coincidence…??

  8. Cindy says...

I really, really needed this today. Love!

  9. CS says...

She looks fabulous as she captures the look/vibe of celebrity styles. I think I need to give this a try, paying attention to all the details of a celebrity outfit I love.

  10. Dee says...

She looks great, but – I would not want to copy someone else’s style, even a celebrity’s.

    • Johanna says...

That’s not really the point though. The point is that all bodies can rock style. That’s it.

  11. Jane I. says...

This is the most wonderfl thing EVER!!! Yes girl!!

  12. Natalie says...

This is great! Love the idea and following her now : )

  13. Christy says...

I love Katie’s blog and Instagram! Plus, her Mega Babe thigh chafe stick is LIFE CHANGING in the summer!

  14. emmie says...

    Love

  15. Jenn J. says...

    LOVE this soooo much!

  16. I did not know Katie before this post. She reminds me of Celeste Barber whom I follow on Instagram as well, she does the same thing but in a more comical way. Her photos ALWAYS bring me a smile on my face !!

  17. Jennifer says...

She is gorgeous! She does it better than all of them!

    • Kristen says...

I agree! Katie looks wonderful in all of these outfits!

  20. Katie pulls off these looks better than the celebs!!!!

  21. Laura says...

Oh darn! I was super hoping for a Megababe promo code! One can dream <3

  22. Estee says...

I cannot love this more! My weight and size has gone up with cancer treatments. This is the perfect post as I’m trying to dress more stylishly and highlight my curves.

    • Libbie says...

Sending you positive thoughts through your treatments, Estee.

    • Shana says...

Same here. I think everyone assumes cancer = skinny. But chemo, hormones etc. often results in weight gain. Good luck with everything.

    • Norah says...

Going through treatment too—stay strong! Body stuff is so hard on top of everything else. Sending love and style luck :)

  23. Samantha Bodamer says...

I love her! I never thought I’d see her here, but more, please!

She is such an amazing woman who stands up size inclusive fashion for ALL women! Her #makemysize posts are the best, and she’s just a refreshing figure in the fashion world.

  24. Raeka says...

She’s amazing. I love how confident and beautiful she is! Does anyone know where to get that leather skirt (preferably pleather though!)??

  25. So fun! I love these looks and showing anyone can pull them off! The look-alike with Harry and Meghan is really cute!

  26. Samantha says...

I too wonder if celeb outfits would look good on my petite curvy frame, now that I see her I feel inspired to try them! Following ✔️

  27. debbie says...

wow! she looks better than the celebrities. more confident and glowing. love!

  28. Taylor says...

Okay I’ve just spent an hour at work scrolling through her instagram and feeling so much joy and inspiration. I want to feel this beautiful, I have a trip to Maui scheduled over Christmas and my goal is now to find a bathing suit I will feel confident and own my body in, instead of my original plan of finding a big caftan to hide under. I want to be someone who doesn’t hide, this is SO INSPIRING THANK YOU

  29. natasha says...

okay, I’ve been off instagram for months but her feed makes me want to start back up again. I love this.

  30. Johanna says...

I’ve been a so called “skinny girl” all my life and in this day and age of working motherhood that I’m in I look downright haggard most days. I do declare that anyone, no matter what her dimensions, who is putting time, effort and savvy into her look is an absolute ten in my book. Period.

  31. Kelly says...

She’s amazing. So happy to be introduced. <3

  32. liz says...

she’s great! Love this! I prob wouldn’t recreate these for myself but I’m trying so. very. hard. to only buy second hand clothes and only when I need to replace them, but she pulls this all off stunningly

  33. Amy says...

As someone who, at age 26, is just now getting out of the stage where my body looks like a teenage boy (not that there’s anything wrong with that) – this was nice to come across.

I’m personally in a transition period for my body where the fits of clothing that used to play up my body type no longer do. It’s tough sometimes to suddenly have to rethink clothes and your personal style – especially your staples. So to see that I can make the same styles/outfits tailored to my current body type too…well that simply makes it a little less overwhelming.

She pulls it all off so well!

    • Kim says...

I’m 50 and I’m in that transition, too. We can do this!

  34. jeannie says...

This is totally awesome and inspires me to dress better. I especially love the 2nd photo.

  35. Sarah says...

This is so awesome! I really love her thoughtful, compassionate approach. As someone who has always been very thin, I appreciate that she doesn’t demonize the women in the original outfits. I still see people say ‘real women have curves’ type stuff sometimes (along with other body-type shaming), but it’s so much better than it used to be. Huge kudos to her for fighting for extended sizing without putting others down.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

yes! she embraces all women/all sizes/all styles in such a loving way. xoxo

    • Amanda says...

Love this. I’m 5’2″ and a size 10/12, so seeing tall, thin women all over the place looking great can bring up the temptation to go along with hating on the size 0’s, when all the while what I really want is to know that *I* can look great, as well. At 35, I’m still working to expel from my mind this false dichotomy that if my size 2 BFF is beautiful, I can’t also be beautiful. Representation doesn’t undo years of internalizing negative messages, but I think it’s such an important step, and helps us recognize that style is accessible to all of us. I’m so excited that we’re seeing more diversity in the fashion world, since after all, women of every size, race, skin tone, hair type, religion, ability, age, gender expression, sexuality, etc deserve to see themselves represented in the worlds of fashion and beauty (and business, and politics, and the sciences, and spheres of influence all over the world – of course ;) ).

  36. Nina says...

so cute. I’ve never seen her before. Love how great she looks in these looks.

  37. Lindsey says...

She looks FABULOUS! Thank you for showcasing her. She’s inspired me to get it together, take off my sweats, and try to dress like a real human today. Thank you Jo and thank you Katie!

  38. Hope says...

Love this . What a great idea. This lady has it going on.

  39. Ramona says...

I’m not sure if it’s copying the work of stylists that makes her look so fabulous or if it’s her eyebrows. Serious brow envy over here.

  40. Abbey says...

I adore her! Love seeing her here!!

    • Maggie says...

SAME! She is the best and I love that more people are getting introduced to her inspiring confidence.

  41. Taryn says...

Love Katie’s instagram. I really feel like I’ve had a boost in my self-esteem since I started following her, Ashley Graham and a few other women who are closer to my size. Plus I love how she highlights women founders. Only a matter of time before you two found each other :)

    • Sarah says...

Yes! I feel more self-love when I see accounts like Katie’s, too, and I’m a totally different body type from her. So beautiful and inspiring.

  42. Margaux Smith says...

LOL I literally recommended her #SuperSizeTheLook series in a comment here yesterday on the Four Fun Things post where you mentioned Megababe :) Of course CoJ is already on the pulse of the most relevant things in my life <3

  43. Heather McMunigal says...

“Why reinvent the wheel? If a stylist put it together, the work is already done for you.”

This thought hit me like – DUH!! That makes so much sense, why haven’t I thought of it!?

I absolutely love this post and everything that she’s doing. This is inspiring me to up to style game!

  44. Cassie says...

is she holding a bottle of dry shampoo in the last pic?? haha! love!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      hahahahahahah yes!

    • Alison says...

I love this too!! made me laugh :)

    • Perdy says...

Cool – I’m not the only one who asked myself that question. That’s wit if I’ve ever seen it!

  45. Jessica says...

I LOVE this so much! I love that Katie looks amazing, but still has such a good sense of humor–replicating the poses is just brilliant. It’s such a good reminder that clothing and style can be fun and joyous!

  46. Carrie says...

This is such great inspiration! I’m constantly trying to upgrade my closet and seeing full outfits like this really helps. If anyone has tips on designing your “whole closet/wardrobe” I’m all ears!

    • Amy says...

The blog “puttingmetogether” has helped me put a wardrobe together for each season!

  47. Diane Smelser says...

omigosh, I love Katie! This is just so cool!

  48. What a clever woman – this is such a fun idea!!

    Rebecca

  49. Laura C. says...

I saw her Instagram earlier this week! She is gorgeous, and she is totally right and stunning!
I try sometimes to copy some styles or outfits that I spot on some of my fav celebrities (i.e. Sofia Coppola, Jennifer Garner, Beauty Uniforms fro CoJ) but sometimes I think I am a copy and not the original Laura C., well perhaps I’m going too far and I just should put myself together and just dress the way I like.
That leads me to a topic that I would LOVE to share and ask with you, and I was searching for opinions on the net lately.
What do you think about the “dress for the job you want not for the job you have”? I am 40 and I feel comfortable with jeans and cosy jumpers and flats or sneakers, but sometimes I don’t know if I should” level up” and get a little more chic with heels and blazers. Shame if I do, shame if I don’t. You get me girls?
Thank you for this post! :)

    • Liz says...

I’ve always found the “dress for the job you want not for the job you have” kinda confusing because I’d much rather be making art or music for a living but alas, I’m not really good enough at any of those skills to monetize them, so I do what I am good at and can pay the bills but requires formal office attire instead. A rule I’ve always followed and think has helped me in the work sphere is never dressing less formally than my supervisor. I guess that’s kind of the same concept, but its just another perspective. I don’t want to look less professional than anyone in the room (including my own boss). It shouldn’t be obvious by your appearance that you’re entry level.

  50. Nina says...

    love it!

  51. diana k. says...

Katie is the digital best friend everyone needs. It sounds silly but her swimsuit posts really help me love myself during the unnecessary stress of bathing suit season.

  52. She looks fabulous in *every* photo, better than the celebrities!

  53. Beth says...

    So good! She looks wonderful!
Also have you checked out Celeste barber on instagram? She takes off the ridiculous nature of celebrity poses- it’s hysterical

  54. This is awesome! i am totally copying that double jean and tan coat look, I already have all of those pieces but for some reason never thought to put them together!

On a different note, this also reminded me a little of @celestebarber haha.

  55. Mary says...

She looks better than the celebrities! Especially the white blazer and jeans combo – so fab on her.

  56. Nicole says...

This is fabulous! I, like many big girls, get trapped in the mindset of “only a thin person can pull ______ off.” But Katie I have to know – how do you have the time and energy to do hundreds of these? Amazing dedication!

  57. Nicole says...

This is AMAZING, such great ideas! I’d love to see more from Katie please!!!

  58. I love her expression! And honestly she can pull off every look. My favorite is the Chrissy’s style one.

  59. Meghan says...

    She is great!

  60. Carol Wynn says...

I just love this! So smart and I like her versions best. Keep it up Katie 👌

  61. Lane says...

I ADORE this! Thank you so much for featuring more plus size bloggers and fashion bites in your blog. It means more than you can imagine to be included with the ‘regular’ girls.

  62. Ali says...

Holy shit she is gorgeous and totally a genius – if the stylist has done the work, just copy it! Legit mind blown, following all of these now!

  63. Sarah says...

    I love all these looks!

  64. Julie says...

Oh I just love this! Katie is so clever and adorable! Thank you!

  65. Cynthia says...

These are classic looks that will work for anyone. Just because you wear a size 12 does not mean your clothes have to look like they came from Omar the Tentmaker.

  66. Court says...

    I love Katie! More please!

  67. Jean Jones says...

She looks better than the celebrity in most of these photos!

  68. Colleen says...

I’m not much for the high waisted jeans but I do like the Chrissy Teigen look.

  69. Sherri says...

Fun post! I thought Katie was the celebrity❤️

  70. nora says...

She’s one of my favorite instagrammers. More on Katie, please!

  71. Monica says...

I LOVE THIS. She looks fabulous. Although I’m not full-figured, I’m a Tall size at 5’11”, which is so hard to find in regular stores and websites. All the cute average-girl off-the-rack stuff looks like tween clothes on me. :(. I would love to see a “Week of Outfits” from Katie!! xoxo

    • Joanna Goddard says...

yes to a week of outfits! we are setting up a shoot and interview! :)

    • Joy says...

      +1!

    • Ramona says...

I would just love to see her do a demo on how she manages that partial front shirt-tuck thing. Clearly all of the celebrity stylists advise it because it’s obviously flattering. But I always look like Steve Urkel when I try to do it. It is not as effortless as it looks! (At least not for me!)

  72. Jessica says...

This post is the highlight of my day.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      nice!! :)

  73. Paula says...

    Genius!!

  74. Sarah Clews says...

    Love this!

  75. Johanna says...

    Brilliant, fun and colourful!

  76. Carly says...

Omg I love this! I have Pinterest boards dedicated to celeb style and even categorized by celebrity but I e never thought to literally recreate their looks. So clever.

  77. OMG it made my day.

The stylish counterpart to Celeste Barber’s hilarious re-creations.

  78. bec says...

    this is SO good!

  79. Jillian says...

At first I assumed this would be a funny piece where she makes fun of ridiculous celebrity outfits that no one can pull off in real life. I’m so glad it wasn’t that! She looks amazing in these and like others have said, often better!

  80. love! i just pinned so many of these looks.

  81. Lisa says...

I just have to say…I am a thin white woman and I am sick of just seeing people who look like me! Lets get all shapes, sizes and colors involved! EVERYONE is beautiful and anyone who can’t see that is really missing out on life.

    • Katharina says...

      <3

  82. Lisa says...

    I love her!

  83. This is amazing! I loved her point about it being like having a personal stylist. I thought she looked better than the celebrity in most cases!!

    • Sarah says...

I was going to say the same thing!

  84. Michaela says...

Lets be real. Sometimes Katie looks better!

    • Heather says...

      I had the same thought!

    • Sydni Jackson says...

      For real!

    • Heather McMunigal says...

YES! I went through her Instagram and she totally looks better a lot of the time!

    • Amy says...

      Totally Agree!

  85. Claudia says...

    Love this!

  86. Carmen Tomas says...

she has a great point… stylists put these looks together! they are fool proof.

  87. Marti says...

I love this. So. Much. That’s all.

  88. Sonja says...

Deeply fabulous. How did I not know about Katie?! Can we do a full outfit post here?

  89. Meredith says...

This is great! I love her takes on celebrity style, which I’m guessing she’s pulled off at a much lower price than the original looks.
