1. The laughs and giggles that bounce off the wall :)

  2. Love, love, love this! Home is definitely more of a feeling than a specific place, and there’s nothing more heartwarming than feeling at home when you’re with the right person.

I lived in Iceland for a year and came back from time to time since then. When the plane lands in Reykjavík (Keflavík) airport they say the usual sermon of “welcome to Iceland, please remain in you seats until…” and then they say in Icelandic “To our Icelandic passengers: welcome home! (velkómin heim!)”

At least I hope they still do that. It has been years since I’ve last been there. I loved this. I understood what they said (but as you can see I can’t write it correctly from memory) so I kinda felt like they also meant me (maybe a little bit).

    • How beautiful! In Pakistan sometimes when the plane finally reaches, people clap. I’ve always loved this. I’m not sure if it still happens but it’s happened a few times. Cannot wait to also go back

The Sea-Tac airport is like an old friend. I love coming home to Seattle after visiting far off places. : )

  5. Loved this! As always!

  6. Laura B says...

While I love this and the sentiment, it simultaneously breaks my heart. My hometown in Sonoma is on fire and so much has been lost. My home and parent’s homes have been spared but those landmarks of childhood (friend’s home with endless sleepovers, a favorite park, an old round barn on the hill) are gone. This post is so aptly timed to remind me of home… truly wherever my family and I are safe and sound <3

    • Jess says...

So sorry for what you’re going through. I’m glad your family is safe, I hope all your friends and loved ones are. Natural disasters have hurt so many people this year. We have to come together to help each other.

    • Brooke says...

Laura, I am right there with you. We live in Santa Rosa and while our home has been spared, so many of our beloved friends have lost everything. Our community has been forever changed, but I couldn’t be prouder of this place that we call home. This community has been amazing in their support for one another. It is a reminder to love each other and be thankful for all that we have. So glad that your family is safe.

  7. Ramona says...

I love to travel, see new places, but there’s nothing like going ‘home’ where everything is just where you left it and you can curl up on your couch.

  8. Jess says...

Since I was a child, home is always where my books are. So much so, that when I moved 3 hours away for school, I made my parents help me lug about a hundred books to my new apartment, not because I hadn’t yet read them but because I knew I wouldn’t feel at home unless I had my favourites books around me. And I was right.

  9. The scent of my mom’s favorite perfume (Amarige) and my dad’s go-to aftershave (Polo aftershave).

The sound of my daughter’s little feet running up & down the hallway in the mornings.

    My husband’s arms.

Eating a bowl of posole is always home (even if it doesn’t taste like my mom’s it’s safe, love & nostalgic).

When a special song comes on wherever you are–that’s home.

My mom, any scent that transports me to my childhood (lilacs, a certain disinfectant, the kind of plastic a beloved toy was made of), the Raffi Christmas album.

    • Maclean Nash says...

The Raffi Christmas album! Oh my goodness, yes!
Old Toy Trains is my favourite. I first heard it in kindergarten, which is where my closest friend and I met. We are not as close as I moved away when I was 12, but to this day, whenever one of us hears it, we text one another.

  21. Amanda G says...

I absolutely love this! As a kid, I moved around a lot, so I adjusted early to the notion that a house isn’t necessarily the only thing that makes a home.

Recently, I went back to where I lived from 4th-8th grades (Estes Park, Colorado) for a glorious, single night of camping. My fiancee and I set up our tent in Rocky Mountain National Park on the edge of Moraine Park (a huge glacial valley). As the sun set over Long’s Peak, we listened to the wind in the pines and the bugling of the elk (if you’ve never heard them, they sound a bit like singing whales!) and I breathed a huge sigh of relief. Going to Rocky feels like going home in such an indescribable way – it’s comforting, familiar, and makes my heart swell with so much joy. Just drives home the point that home can mean so many things <3

I actually was thinking about this last night as I was falling asleep – laying my cheek on my husband’s bare back while he sleeps, my dog lying inbetween our legs, and the sound of my babies breathing in the monitor.

and/or the first sip of a steaming cup of coffee in the morning

  26. Rachel Dunlap says...

I breathe a sigh of relief every time I get to the airport of my hometown (PDX). My husband (EWR) doesn’t get it.
