Brooklyn street

After searching for an apartment for four years, I started to doubt it would ever happen. We’d had so many ups and downs and had been outbid on five different places.

But finally the stars aligned! We bought an apartment! It was terrifying to sign the contract — I’ve always been a renter – but we’re so, so happy and grateful that we’ve found a place that hopefully will be our family home for a really long time. So crazy and exciting to think about.

It’s funny because Alex and I have talked about possibly moving to California many times since we first met (“What are we going to talk about now?!” Alex joked as we signed the papers for our new place), but Brooklyn is a great fit for our family. I love how it feels like a small town within a big city, and everyone seems to know each other. We still aren’t psyched about long dark winters, but we’ll stock up on sun lamps and learn to make soups.

Thank you so much for reading, and I look forward to sharing photos of the new place once we’ve gotten everything organized!

  8. Congratulations, Joanna! That is really exciting news. Those pictures of you four are just breath-taking. I’ve recently started a blog for financial literacy for women, and would love to know more about how you approached this decision! I have really appreciated the stories you have been linking to regarding financial topics geared towards women (like the Fuck-Off Fund, for example). Again, a heartfelt congrats!

  9. Congratulations!!!

I live in Chicago and really like it here, but the long dark winters also do a number on my psyche. I grew up in the south and the cold cold is just so hard for me to deal with. I tend to feel pretty depressed in Jan and Feb. Working to proactively combat it this year.

  11. Congratulations Jo! That’s so exciting for your family. I’m jumping up and down, holding hands in a family ring and doing a silly dance (in my head). Yaaayy!!! I’m so excited for you guys (Can you tell?)

Yay for your family! Please post a “lessons learned” from the experience of both buying and moving!

  29. Congratulations!!! This is wonderful news, you and your family truly seem to make the most of the uniqueness of Brooklyn :) I dream of living in California too, but most of my family is on the East Coast, I don’t think I’ll ever move there. But it makes our trips there more special. I can’t wait to learn more about your new digs!

So so happy for you & your sweet menfolk. I share that feeling of a fear of commitment while thinking about buying! We’ve rented our entire marriage (3.5yrs) and it’s nice to ring someone when something’s broken or needs attention! But my husband is pretty set on buying when our current lease is up, next June 1St. But we also play around with the idea of getting the HECK out of this crazy state (CA) as it is going down some scary roads. We think Oregon! So we have 8months to decide! Best of everything as you pack a house…(worst) but purge and organize! (Best)

What about living in CA is putting you off? Just curious as I’ve lived here all my life. Thanks!
