Father’s Day Gift Guide

Kirk and Michael Douglas

Dads are the best, so why is it that they’re always impossible to shop for? Maybe it’s because they already know what they like, and they’re sticking with it. So, on that note, we pulled together nine of the most classic, timeless gifts that any dad of any age would love…

Original Stan Smith Sneakers

Original Stan Smith Sneakers, $75, for playing frisbee all summer.

Timex watch

A knock-around watch, $60, to wear on weekends.

Ray-Ban aviator sunglasses

Ray-Ban aviators, $150, because all guys somehow look amazing in them.

Back to the Future Trilogy

Back to the Future, $44, because it’s only one of the best trilogies ever. (“Roads? Where we’re going we don’t need roads.”)

French press

A break-resistant French press, $30, so he can make a cup even while camping.

Marled Joggers

Relaxed joggers, $40, to up his change-into-sweatpants-every-night-after-work game.

The best wireless speaker

Go in with your siblings and get an amazing-sounding Bluetooth speaker, $230, for playing tunes at home or in the backyard.

Aerating Pourer

Aerating Pourer, $20, to perform the ultimate cool-dad trick: It aerates wine and boosts flavor (like a decanter) immediately as it’s poured.

Drawstring duffle

Barbour duffle, $199, with a drawstring rope, so he can pack up all his things and come visit you already!

A handy tip: Macy’s offers e-gifts, which make giving presents a thousand times easier. You choose the gift you want to give and click the e-gift icon to fill in the name and email of the gift recipient. The gift recipient then receives an email telling them about your gift and they get a chance to adjust size, color or even (secretly) exchange it before it ships to them. It’s also great for last-minute gifts (you can even order ON Father’s Day), since the email gets sent to them right away.

Thoughts? What will you be getting your dad this year?

P.S. Dads are the original hipsters.

  1. I’m baking my dad a coffee cake because he’s impossible to shop for and I’m bored of getting him yet another box of ProV1s (golf balls). Hahaha.

    • Catherine says...

Hilarious. Sounds exactly like my dad. He gets peppermints and/or golf balls for Christmas, birthday, and Father’s Day.

  2. Natalie T. says...

I asked my dad what he wanted (because he is amazing!) and he said socks. *Facepalm.* He doesn’t even like fancy beer!

  3. Great ideas! Thank you. We’re celebrating this Sunday with my husband – the dad of our two girls. Four years ago, the girls and I created a memory book for him. It was one page for each girl with questions they answered about their dad. We’ve continued with the book adding one page each Father’s Day and plan to continue until … probably the youngest is 18? (she’s 6 now). My husband says it’s his favorite gift.

  4. Lindsay says...

It’s great to see an eclectic gift guide. Typically dad gift guides are geared toward young, modern dads….and mine is a little different than that. ;)

  5. Kirsten says...

My husband’s been talking about Stan Smiths. Thanks for pushing me to just get them! I’ve got my eye on a pair with red instead of green, though, so I’ll hem and haw just a bit longer…

  6. Emily says...

This was the best dad’s gift guide you’ve made in 5 years. Well…for me. Because I realized my husband has mentioned Ray-Ban’s and then the genius Macy’s gift policy just made it so so easy. Thanks, Jo!

  7. Allie says...

Love my Bodum like whoa but it is far from break-resistant. I am on my third carafe already.

  8. Katie says...

This is a great list! Books are my go-to, but recently I’ve started getting my dad goody bags filled with random treats from Trader Joe’s. He opens it, and then we sample everything together :)

    • Lanna says...

Brilliant! Living out of state makes these holidays hard. But my marathon-snacker dad will definitely appreciate a box full of Trader Joe’s goodness (and my mom will roll her eyes as he snacks his way through the day). Thanks for sharing!

  9. Always love your gift guides! And side note, always find your sponsored posts perfect in tone and tasteful.

    • Yes! Completely agree.

    • So true! Authentic and well balanced, one of the only blogs I have continued to read for so long.

    • Aya says...

Totally agree–authentic and never pushy. I feel like you’re sharing something with us and it happens to help support your blog. Some other blogs I don’t even want to read them because they feel forced, or I feel tricked after reading them, having this niggling feeling that something was off. Thank you!

  10. nice selection of gifts..

  11. Noreen says...

Came here today SPECIFICALLY hoping for a Father’s Day gift guide. Thank you for the great ideas (orders wine aerator)

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      haha, so glad!

  12. Leah says...

I’m getting my husband a gift from our baby…our rescue puppy! They’ll be celebrating in style with a new long leash – perfect for running in fields and on the beach!

  13. meredith says...

That tip about Macy’s is awesome! I hope more companies pick up that idea.

  14. What does it say about me that I personally own two of these items myself? Maybe I’m rockin Dad style? ;)

  15. Ruth says...

Just grabbed the sweatpants for my dad, thanks for the link!

  16. Elisha says...

Man, other stores really need to do that e-gift card!! What an awesome option.

  17. Nicki says...

That bike lock suggestion is awesome!! My Dad is so hard to shop for… I get him beer or golf balls for almost every birthday/Christmas/Father’s Day. TIme to start saving ;)

  18. Elliesee says...

I did not recognize Kirk and Michael Douglas – Michael Douglas was in Montreal for the Grand Prix and Kirk Douglas amazes me at 100 years old.

  19. Julia says...

10th gift: Steak! I ordered some New York Strips for my dad from Omaha Steaks and he lost his mind with happiness. This isn’t a man that ever gets excited about anything. Every year he drops subtle hints about it too. It’s a home run for the impossible to shop for carnivore.
Oh and he flipped out our tge little Styrofoam cooler they ship it in, too. It was like a two-for one!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      what a good one!

  20. Rosabella says...

I would like every single one of these gifts….for myself

    • Emily says...

Ha! I was just going to post the same thing! :)

  21. RT says...

My husband is impossible to shop for. IMPOSSIBLE. I just end up getting him a gift certificate to his favorite record store every year :(

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      but he must love it!

    • RT says...

He does! I just wish I could pick out more “fun” stuff, but it’s fun for him, I guess :)

  22. My hubby is impossible to shop for. If he wants something, he’ll just get it for himself. He doesn’t like to shop so he does miss out on products he would notice if he ever went inside a store. My never-fail go-tos for him are flashlights and anything with lots of pockets. I do think he would like the bluetooth speaker you mentioned- I’ll have to keep that in mind. Thanks for sharing. Our twins alway make him something special too- he loves that the most.

he sounds adorable! i love that you get him flashlights :)

  23. Alice Quin says...

Great guide! I usually send my dad a card but I will save these ideas for his birthday at the end of summer.

  24. I got my fiance (and father of our beautiful kiddos!) a bluetooth speaker last year and we use it constantly! It’s a wonderful gift which is fun for the family to use together! Great suggestion!

  25. Why is it that I want everything on this list for myself? #notadad

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      hahaha

  26. Natalie Brennan says...

Thanks for the reminder about aviators, they are are always a great choice!
