Do or Don’t: Two Duvets on One Bed

I’ve been living in Switzerland for many years (I’m Australian though). When my Swiss husband and I got married, I insisted on having one duvet even though most of our friends here have two. I thought that was so weird back then. Sometimes it’s nice to sleep in a two duvet bed but after 27 years, we still have just one. I think I’d be lost without our ongoing (and mostly loving) tug of “duvet” war.

Have been married to my Norwegian husband for 8 years. He always advocated the 2 duvet system but I resisted because of aesthetics…of all things. We have subsequently moved and he bought 2 inners and 2 duvets so I had no choice. Oh the difference!!! He is no longer like the heat seeking missile he was when we had just the one. I am SOLD!

I know this post is late…but I purchased two twin size quilts for our king bed….put them on a few nights ago and for the first time in years, slept all night. There was no pulling or tugging on the blankets. My winter duvets will also be double! Each twin came with a euro sham so the bedding still looks very elegant.

We came up with this idea when I realized that the thing that was keeping us from sleeping happily together was sharing the covers. I get hot at night and fidget so I can throw off my duvet at will without disturbing him. He usually goes to “the snore room” after he awakens once anyway.

I really like this idea. I like to be wrapped by my duvet, but with my husband, it’s impossible. He always said I took away all the duvet and he’s cold but I still feel not cozy enough. Also, I’m from China, I really don’t understand a sheet between me and the duvet. I tried, and it made me very uncomfortable. Now I live in US, I tried to avoid buying sheet set because I only used fitted sheet. We use duvet cover, every week I took it off and wash it with my sheet, pillowcases, and other bedding stuff. Maybe some people think taking off and putting on the duvet cover is too much trouble, but I grew up with this, so I feel fine.

Am I the only person who cannot stand duvets? I always feel the movement of the blanket inside and somehow I get it crumbled up before I fall asleep every time… so what we do is that he uses the regular comforter and I use my own little blanket which just gets tucked under in the morning. Pretty weird, I guess but I hate top sheets and duvets so this works best for us.

Since completing an internship in Austria in 2011, I have adopted the two-duvet philosophy that I encountered there. The only adaption being that we do use a flat sheet underneath them as my Canadian husband prefers this to contact with a bare duvet. I really appreciate this option because I am one of those low-impact sleepers whose bed looks untouched when I awake in the morning, whereas, my husband’s side of the bed looks like there had been an MMA event there the night before.

i am from germany, we always have our own duvet straight up, no sheet underneath the duvet (i find that kinda weird) but my husband is from canada and he is used to one duvet and a sheet underneath. so we tried both but stuck to the two duvets. snuggling makes it more fun because you put the two together (a little overlapping) and it makes one big duvet but once you are ready to pass out, each can roll into your own and then stick a foot into the other persons duvet haha. i love it, it gives me freedom to sleep the way i like. my husband is always so hot and it made sharing one impossible…

Snuggling with two duvets is really easy! You just get really close under one ;)
But ceriously having two is the best! I’m from Germany where we have one sheet on the mattress and then a duvet in it’s own case, with no additional sheet. It’s the best way in my point of view since I often get all tangled up in a thin sheet that’s supposed to go under the duvet.
Plus, when you have two duvets, you can have different material/thickness. I basically sleep with a winter one all year long, while my partner prefers something lighter, so this way we both feel comfortable!!

My husband and I are from Australia, and have both never known anything different than having a large fitted sheet covering the mattress, then a large flat sheet on top of that, then a large doona (duvet) inside its own cover. Its cosy and we like snuggling up together. How can you snuggle if there are two separate covers. We are currently in Croatia and the last two hotels have the two separate duvets with no top sheet. We hate it. The single duvets are tiny. We had to ask for a large top sheet and were given 2 single duvet covers instead. ?????? We find it really strange, but that is the way it’s done over here. Its not to our liking but we are on holiday in their country, so we will see how we go.

I would highly recommend two duvets. And no sheet. It is the best thing and we have even been known to take ‘quilty’ away with us. My husband gets hot, I get cold, he’s tall, I’m short; so we have a super king size duvet known as ‘quilty’ (his; 1 tog for winter, just the cover for summer) and I have a wool duvet (would highly recommend this) for all year round, great for ‘night sweats’. 6 pillows and a ‘small’ pillow for between the legs (hip problems); both of us are/were sporty and one of us has plenty of old injuries. We are also considering two different mattresses as we are different builds and weight. We both need a good night’s sleep and if we don’t, it impacts on our work, home and health; we’ve been together nearly 20 years and it doesn’t impact on your cuddles. Being tired and irritable does impact on your health and marriage. I would really recommend getting the bedding that suits rather than just having what you think it the ‘norm’. My only question – all our covers are white and I’d love some ideas on changing it up sometimes; patterns don’t work.

Live in Austria and know the two-duvet thing is totally normal for couples. My husband and I have shared one, however for the past 15 years and I know the tug-of-war issue BUT we upsized our duvet after five years of marriage. It has been working well the last ten years!! :) Sharing a large one is also SO much nicer for intimacy!

2 twin duvets or 2 twin XL duvets on a king (eastern) mattress?

WHAT? Mind. Blown.

Although living in US for some time I never realized it is so much different from Europe in bedding. Here, I would say 95% couples use separate duvets, it is the most common way how to sleep (and no top sheet). I have only one big duvet for two and my husband hated it, (you can not cuddle all night and it is never big enough to satisfy two people, and you can not tuck yourself in), we do not use it anymore.

The most annoying part about these individual duvets is that they are ridicously short (in Germany, where I am living now, they are 200 or 220 cm long) and also not particularly wide (135 or 150 respectively). This is the size I used as a kid growing up and I don’t find it comfortable to use as an adult as I am relatively tall, and cold air comes in from all sides and you really can’t stretch and keep warm at the same time: I can’t cover both my neck and feet at the same time. And forget about tucking.
For me, a huge duvet cover (no top sheet) which can be tucked at the end and covers both me and my partner completely is the way to go. I guess I wouldn’t mind two duvets (perfect for people with different comfort temperatures!) if they were big enough, but for me it doesn’t work and I hate staying at hotels and having to check or ask for an extra blanket to cover my feet. .
This is of course my very personal opinion, which is strongly influenced by my way of sleeping.

Hahaha this is so hilarious! For most of us in Europe, it’s completely normal. I’m actually considering to go the other way, because I feel the two duvets are preventing us from snuggling properly ;)

We have two duvets, but every night before falling asleep I try to get under my husband’s blanket and he kicks me out! :)

We went to Iceland on our honeymoon in November, and the Hilton Reykavik Nordica (highly recommend by the way!) had two fluffy white duvets on the bed, and no top sheet. We were SO confused at first. But we slept like babies (in part due to it getting dark at like 4pm and not getting like until after 9am, but that’s another story).
My husband is such a cover hog. He manages to wrap himself up like a burrito during the night, while also managing to shove the top sheet down past his feet…waking me up ALL night long as I grasp for a corner of something, anything, to cover my body with. It was like, OMG why didn’t we think of this?? We considered it when we moved into our current place a couple months ago, and upgraded to a king size bed from a queen. But our budget has been super tight, so we settled on just one duvet. But it’s something I’d love to do in the future, with a coverlet over top when the bed is made so no one is the wiser when they come over!

Fighting over covers? That’s for amateurs. We have always had our own blankets and top sheets. Also our own bathrooms and checking accounts if anyone is looking for marital advice. As Lady Bird, a first lady, once said, “I wouldn’t share a checking account with the angel Gabriel.” Neither would I.

I’m Swedish but live in Norway – couldn’t help but smile when I read this. To me it’s natural to have two duvets with covers matching the pillow covers, don’t know anyone how does it differently. I never understood the big, heavy duvet with the top sheet, but I guess it depends on what you’re used to. To those who worry about not being close enough – it’s no problem to cuddle with two duvets, you just share one of them for cuddling and then go back to your own for sleeping:-)
