Reading up on your blog, I can mention that I have tried waxing at home and it has worked for me. It helps me keep clean and neat.

For those of you that say you wish you never would have shaved, why not just let it grow back to the way it was before? Wouldn’t that be the simplest solution? The hair may look thicker because it is blunt but after a few days won’t it look like it did prior to shaving or will it keep growing and get long?

This is so much better than shaving whic I’ve done a few times. Shaving always leaves stubble and gets ingrown hairs.

I use cream on the bikini line and umm, trim the rest but never wax and have never had a Brazilian. I did once wonder if everyone but me did the whole bit until I read a thread about waxing before child birth and it seemed no one could be bothered. Unless you were a bikini model…which I am not. I’ve had 3 babies and I am pretty sure the Dr has no interest in whether you wax or not. I mean, they deal with the placenta…what’s a bit of hair between friends?

I’ve gotten waxed a handful of times, once being before my honeymoon. The lady waxing me was telling me about her daughter (who, at that time, had just recently gotten married) and about how they were in a foreign country and she ended up needing medical help because she had picked up merca somewhere (they thought maybe the gym). Well I thanked my lucky stars that we had planned a honeymoon in the states and didn’t think twice about that story until I ended up at the hospital on my honeymoon as well. While the doctors at the hospital didn’t know for sure what was going on with me and why I had a hugely painful bump on my butt (though they did help fix the problem so I could semi enjoy the rest of my honeymoon), I found out upon arriving home and having to get treated for an infected finger that I too had picked up merca somewhere. Unless merca is properly treated, it comes back and can infect other areas, hence why I got two infections within the first few weeks of marriage….a joy for my new husband to deal with. I can’t say for sure where I picked up merca from, but I always thought it was strange that I got it shortly after getting waxed by the lady whose daughter also got the infection. It didn’t stop me from getting waxed again but maybe it should have.

I get a brazilian (with a little strip left) every 5 weeks or so. It is extremely painful the first time (I spent the whole afternoon in a robe walking around the house going “what have I DONE?”), but when you go regularly it really doesn’t hurt that much, just for a few seconds. I do it even when single, just because I like it that way. But it also helps when I’m seeing someone – I feel sexier in tiny little underwear and it’s nicer for both of us when he is um, you know, down there. If you do decide to try it, make sure you go somewhere that uses what’s called “hot wax” (they put it straight on and let it harden, then rip the hardened wax off) rather than strip wax (where they put a hot honey-looking wax on, then smooth fabric over and pull the fabric off) as it is much less painful for sensitive areas.

I used to wax my legs and arm-pits regularly. I tried shaving my nether region but that just resulted in red bumps and ingrowns. I stopped waxing my legs after a painful incident: I unknowingly waxed my forearm to my leg (I still have no idea how), and it was also the arm I used to rip the cloth strip off of my leg. When I ripped the cloth off I ripped my arm off too. My arm was bruised for about a month, and since it was in summer it got noticed a lot (it was really bad). I decided to give up waxing after that. It was funny seeing people’s reaction to my story after they asked what had happened to me, though. Well, it’s funny thinking about it now. At the time it was pretty embarrassing.

I have only attempted to wax my nether regions twice and both times I had to quit half way and just shave after the swelling went down. IT HURTS! If you don’t have to, don’t do it.
I did wax my underarms for about 12 years and it really wasn’t that bad. However, I decided that I had spent enough money and time on waxing and chose to get my underarms and bikini area lasered. I’m half way through the treatments but one thing I should mention…IT HURTS A LOT!!!!!! Probably more than waxing but it’s worth not having to shave or wax ever again.

Obviously to each their own and the important thing is to do what feels right to oneself.

However, I think it’s important to discuss that, while taking into consideration a lot of people’s opinions regarding body hair and the fact that women have different ‘hair’ qualities, ‘waxing’ pretty much may feel like something you have to do, rather than an option that may seem to some as a voluntary form of torture.

I think it’s pretty easy to be horrified by waxing and not understand why some people do it rather than shave when your hair is thin/ takes a week to grow back/ have no ingrown hair. After all, lots of women get to shave their legs/ armpits (and bikini line if there is even any hair there) once a week or every 4 days.

However, is it really that difficult to understand why some women go through all this process when you read comments like ‘i was traumatised by so and so’s hair poking out of her bikini line’?

There are women whose hair is by far coarse, thicker, in much larger quantities than what is considered acceptable by society today. This may be genetic, in that women in southern countries, for example, tend to have darker hair, and more of it. It can also be due to a hormonal imbalance (PCOS) which can cause abnormal hair grow, in terms of quantity and location. For lots of these women, shaving means shaving your body every day as the hair grows back much quicker, often meaning that your skin becomes irritated and your chances of ingrown hairs increase. Whereas waxing means a more kind response to your skin and the time you spend feeling sorry about yourself for not being able to fit in society’s standards of what’s acceptable.

I actually don’t think men really care how hairy we are or how we take care of our hair but i do think women do. Women will judge other women on how hairy they look and it’s only a matter of time until men start doing it to.

It shouldn’t really matter which method we choose or how much hair we get rid of so as long we do it in a way we feel it’s kind to both our beliefs and our body. I, for one, would love to be able to shave. I can’t so i have to wax, and although the pain is ridiculously exaggerated (yes, even taking into consideration people’s different responses to pain), i’ll continue doing it. What i would like even more though is to stop hearing people say how traumatised they are by hair. If nothing else, please, pretty please, try to imagine the message you’re passing to young girls out there, how negatively you’re impacting on their self confidence.

We’re all women, we really should support each other.

I’m from Argentina and I wax, not everything but most part of it. Here it’s pretty comun do it. It’s not more painful that wax your legs or your armpits. I feel confortable and even cleaner with the results!

I got my first wax done a few months into my freshman year of college and love it. I think it was sort of liberating and felt very grown up, but also made me feel a little more sexual…or something. However, and even better, was that I didn’t think it was as bad as everyone says, I would definitely give it a go. It is an expensive hobby though.

it stays longer and after some “years” you will have less hair, because of that we in my country starts at very early ages like 13-14. At the beg. yes it hurts but the waxing methods now is less hurting than old methods which is a plus. Full body wax is abt 50 – 60 usd, is it expensive?

WOW there are so many comments! Not reading them all, but I am pro-bikini line waxing. I got a brazilian over the summer and it was fun, but really, at a certain point, it makes no difference, and I sort of like looking like a woman and not a little kid.

If you’re thinking about it, go to MAXWAX over on the UWS (walking distance of the 72nd street stop, not that you like trains). You can get it over with quickly and then treat yourself to a Levain’s cookie downstairs!!

I find this so funny: in Portugal, almost every single woman waxes. Legs get waxed, the hohaah gets waxed, armpits get waxed, same with eye brows and the “moustache area”, ha ha ha :P
I actually think it’s weird that American (well, mostly American) women would rather shave than wax. Waxing lasts a long time and shaving cuts the end of your hairs, so they seem thicker.
Anyway, I don’t think it hurts. Sure, if you feel a bit more sensitive, then it’s not a nice thing to wax your hohaah in those days, but it can be handled.
I go to this very nice and professional lady and full leg wax, armpit wax, hohaah wax, eyebrows and “moustache area” wax costs me around 25 dollars.

Oh my gosh, this may sound a little silly (okay, really silly) but THANK YOU for this post! I don’t wax, see absolutely no reason to start and don’t want to ever know what it feels like, but I always wonder if I’m the only person who doesn’t. It’s interesting to see the reactions. Feel better knowing I’m not the only one out there who doesn’t wax. :)

I do sometimes. I don’t do it for any particular reason other that I have really, really itchy skin when my allergies are bad and body hair just makes it even more unbearable. So when the itch is really bad, it feels good to have it waxed. The rest of the time I just trim it. I shave or epilate my legs and arms too, and on days like today it’s all I can do to keep from shaving my head.

(but it doesn’t bother me if other people want to keep it. although if you want my face down there, trim that shiz.)

It hurts pretty badly the first time, but if you keep doing it the hair gets thinner and it isn’t so intense. It also doesn’t take nearly as long as you’d think. It’s still not as painful as myofascial release. ;) You can get products like Tend Skin to avoid ingrown hairs and such.

I shave and don’t wax, but I’m 42, have been married for sixteen years, and have three kids, so I may not be representative of most of your readers. I just don’t have the time or money for things like this right now; there is always a kid who needs a new pair of shoes or money for a field trip and so on, and that’s where all the money goes (plus, getting waxed doesn’t sound like how I personally want to spend what little free time there is). That said, I can see why some would do it, especially those who live near a beach or spend a lot of time in a bathing suit.

It does seem like it is more common right now to be horrified by the idea of body hair than when I was in my twenties, but I am kind of hoping the fashion pendulum swings back around by the time my daughter is dealing with all this!

I am 25 and I’ve been getting bikini waxes since I was 14. The thing is that I have a lot of hair down there and using a bikini without waxing was just not an option. Also, I’m brazillian and it’s very common for us to do that.
Does it hurt? yes. Does it make me feel better about myself? sure. Is it really necessary if you’re not hairy in the area? absolutely not.

You should try egyptian waxing with sugar paste. I did normal waxing but that’s just too painful and putting hot wax on my intimate areas did not feel good at all. Then I tried sugar paste. Wow, what a difference, less pain, skin is beautiful, no in-grows. I highly recommend it.

It seems to be a very european thing? we all wax here- really. even if you do not date. You should see how crowded are waxing studios in germany!

I get the full Brazilian, but keep the front really full. It’s a kind of business in the front, party in the back situation. I have a fabulous Brazilian (as in, she’s from Brazil) waxer just down the road from my work. Every time she rips off a strip she pumps her fist in the air a little and says ‘brave!’ I love how clean and soft it feels. I leave enough hair so I definitely don’t look like a little girl.

It’s not comfortable, but I love how it makes me feel, so it’s a line item in my monthly budget.

I find the idea that getting a Brazilian is axiomatically anti-feminist tiresome and dull. Caitlin Moran can shove it.

I wax the bikini area once a month, I can’t imagine not doing it, but I can’t imagine waxing more than that, because it’s painful enough as it is, and I like looking like an adult!

I have had some bikini waxes so everything would like ‘nice’ when on holiday. But I have stopped doing it since apparently it doesn’t work on everybody. Now this is kind of weird to tell but since we are all being honest and open about it: On some places you see the hairs but they’re not of the consistency to be waxed. So in the end not everything was away and they had to take tweezers to finish the job. Hair by hair… I have now completely stopped since the last time they kept on waxing and my skin was burnt and red. At the time it didn’t really hurt but since I am not looking at myself when getting waxed I’d figure they would stop if you are getting red burns – after weeks it was finally over! I felt super concious of myself… I am not thinking of getting it done anymore – my supersoft hair doesn’t make it possible neither down there or on my legs,

I do waxed, and have done since I was a teenager really. I do the brazilian wax and my legs (legs I do myself at home) and shave my underarms. To be honest though, over the winter I shave my legs more than wax.

I do also wax if I’m not seeing anyone, as I do feel more hygienic and ‘pampered’ if I do. weird huh?

i used to wax before i had my baby. i never got waxed regularly, just when i felt like i wanted to. i went to a really good (and reasonable) salon, but it was kind of a hike for me. now that i have a toddler that i stay home with i just can’t see myself spending my alone time getting waxed. i shave…

my sister talks about getting laser hair removal (i have thought about it…). but with how hair trends come and go, what is going to happen with big 70s bushes are back in? i mean, my mom plucked her eyebrows really thin as a teenager, and then regretted it when brook shields became popular.
