J.Crew has such great prints and patterns right now… but the funny thing I keep noticing on the models (and girls on the street) is that they’re half-tucking their shirts. Apparently it’s a thing! Effortlessly cool and laid-back. Would you do it?
I think it looks trashy and it seems to me that young girls are doing it because it gives the young boys a good view of their female area. SMH.
They do it so they can show the top of the pants. It is not so much of a style thing as a way to show the product.
haha, i love this look … but when i do it myself, my husband says that i look like i had a stroke while getting dressed!
Aaah! At my alma mater, UNC, we called that the frat tuck! So funny!
I think about the tuck way to often however tend to think maybe I should do the full front tuck and out at the back… maybe I should give the half tuck a go?

i do it! but not like those j crew models, i think it’s really key to do a quick sloppy tuck rather than their perfect low-blousiness option. i dig it!
Heck, NO! It looks too contrived to me.
refined but not- i love it
For proof- visit my blog post here
I ‘half-tuck’ ALL the time…
I’ve never been a fan of tucking my shirt in… so the half tuck is a great way around it.
Love this post!
xoxo M
I don’t like it at all. If I saw somebody wearing a shirt that was only half tucked in, I would have the hardest time taking them seriously.
I love it on them! Why can I never pull it of? Do you do it?
This is totally in here in Europe and I love it! I’m not sure I would do it with a button down shirt like the ones in the photos, but it’s a great way to add a waistline with a big, oversized shirt, which again, is super popular here (particularly in Denmark!) I also would tuck exactly HALF of the shirt, but maybe a piece tucked into the belt at the front.
No I think it looks a little silly!
Do! it’a totally tomboy
Love that! I do do it all the time, may not be intentional though ;o)
I do it all the time!! Especially with a chambray shirt.
It’s very comfortable too when you eat a lot =P
Xoxo,
Jessica
I did! Today, actually :) And even with the same denim shirt! :) I LOVE it! Totally effortlessly casual-chic. I hope it sticks!
LOL- this is so “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” 2007! Hilarious!!
i already do do it!! so YES! :) haha
a definite do!
i totally did this today…but i’m just now reading this post! coincidence? i think it only looks good with the button down shirt and skinny pants, like the photos. i like it! i think its more for casual weekend attire…cute, laid-back, comfy. i’m not sure if i can pull it off, but hey! what’s fashion without taking a few risks every now and then?
Yes it’s very casual and cute.
Totally. I blogged about this a while ago and I LOVE it!
I think it looks cool but I’m too shy to try it! My friend calls it a shirt mullet.
I do this all the time! I think its something younger girls can easily pull off, but those 30 and up can still try this look.
no the antisymmetry is an eyesore for me
One of my ex-boyfriends used to do the half tuck all the time, and I used to tell him that it looked like he didn’t tuck in his shirt properly while in the bathroom. I’m sad to see the trend appear in the women’s fashion as well. For me it’s a definite no no,
i’ve noticed that too, and i’ve been trying to pull it off without as much luck as i had hoped. perhaps i’ll leave it up to the jcrew models….
i think it’s one of those things that looks killer in photos and “off” in real life.
I heart the half tuck!!!
I used to until my grandmother saw me doing it and forced her little old hands down my pants to tuck in my shirt.
don’t do it unless you want that to happen to you.
I think it dedinitely depends on the oitfit and maybe the attitude of the wearer. Love the lipstick color the model is wearing and the polka dot sweater is adorable!
It seems cute in photos but I feel like I would not be able to pull it off! I did, however, do this accidentally while wearing leggings and it was so horrifyingly bad, I always double check before I leave the house…haha.
I noticed this too! Personally, I don’t really like the look. You either tuck it in or you don’t!

every day! I hardly feel like myself if I’m all the way tucked or all the way un-tucked.
Sure, why not? Give it a try and if it looks good to you, go for it. I think I’d feel lopsided all day, but that’s just me. :)
I love it! Fully tucked can look a little stiff – not to mention not terribly flattering unless you have just the right body type. A little undone is always a good way to go!
To tuck in a bit in the front and leave the rest out is a Do. To tuck in one side and leave the other side out, as in these pics is a DON’T! Its done to show the hem of the shirt, its not a fashion trend!! You really didn’t know that? Joanna, you’ve worked in fashion magazines, surely you know this stuff!!
it looks nice!!
It IS done only for the purpose of showing how the shirt looks tucked and untucked without having to use 2 images per item. Believe me, I work in the industry.
Why people take it as a “trend” and run with it, is beyond my imagination :D
Half tuck totally works if, the person is (not pregnant) over 5’4 and had a flat stomach, just saying! aka not me! But totally awesome!
I actually liek this look and have been seeing it alot I’ve tried it too and i feel so chic and effortlessly cool
I think this look works for models, but not in real life. It’s slightly awkward…
xoxo,
great little day

I love the half tuck! I wore one last week to school (i’m a middle school teacher) and one of my students raised their hand to inform me, “Mrs. Ross! You’re shirt is half stuck in your waistband. You might want to fix it!” Instead of explaining that I was trying the half-tuck on purpose (and that I thought I was uber hip) pretended that I was so glad for her help! I haven’t tried it again yet :)
it only looks good on those super tall/skinny models at j.crew!
i think it looks adorable in the pictures….however, in real life, it doesn’t look effortless. it looks like you tucked in half your shirt to look cool, so for me, it’s too trendy and not natural.
I like it. Although, I am usually one to tuck the front of my shirt in and leave the back out. That way my legs aren’t shortened, I can show my belt but I still can show the shirt a bit in the back.
Not for me. I love J.Crew but this look tells me “I’m trying really hard to look relaxed and fun.”
I do it all the time.

NO! it looks sloppy, but it also looks like you’re trying too hard to be cool, a failed attempt at looking “natural”. i say pick a side and stick with it -tucked or untucked, no in betweens.
Elin Kling does this look really well as shown above on those J. Crew models. I prefer doing the half tuck as tucking in the front a bit and leaving the back untucked, the quarter tuck (?) look just doesn’t quite work for me. Or maybe I haven’t found the right shirts.
I think it’s a look that says, “I am trying really hard to look effortlessly cool, and I take all my cues from J. Crew.”
I worked for j crew for a few years in college and they did this then too. Although it was generally a front in-back out or just a small piece of a loose shirt tucked in then. I think that worked because it gave some shape to the really float shirts that are in style. The half tuck looks a little odd to me when it is a chambray…
I’ve been doing that for years…it’s a great way to show off a belt buckle.
It’s also great if the shirt isn’t long enough to stay tucked in all over.
Another thing, doing this allows me to wear jeans that might give me a little muffin top…since I’m not tucking in the back portion, I’m not accentuating it.
Messy? Hardly. If that’s messy then tucking in the entire shirt is uptight and fussy.
First of all, I love J.Crew. Secondly, yes! I love the half tuck. It looks like, “I roll out of bed looking this good.” I’m a fan of effortless chic.
I’m into it! But I’m also into a messier look in general… =)

Looks okay here. A bit sloppy for me to wear, esp. to work.
models can do whatever they want:)
Looks unkempt. I don’t like the look at all.
I will often times only tuck the front and leave the back out…more butt coverage that way…
i’ve tried to do this, but it ended up just getting weird as i moved around throughout the day.
“Strategically laidback” is pretty hilarious, no?
I half-tuck all the time. It can look cool and effortless (if done right) but mostly because it’s the only way I can get a shirt into my jeans since my body changed after pregnancy. Ha!
That drives the symmetrical, matching-bag-and-shoes side of me nuts! However, it’s not as bad as that fad years ago of rolling up one pant leg.
I think this “trend” started because the clothing companies wants you to see how great the shirt looks both tucked and untucked, and also be able to show both the pants and top in one picture.
Here’s the beauty of the half-tuck…..you get to slightly define your waist and yet the loosey goosie effect in the back hides a bit of the back chub one might have……it’s brilliant.
However, my daughter, who has mad style (at age 8.95) has already moved on to the full tuck with belt……hhhhmmm, I may need to watch those late night ice cream binges for that one.
A half-tuck looks indecisive to me.
