Have a Great Weekend.

Have a Great Weekend

This weekend, we have unusually exciting plans! Alex and I are heading to the WHITE HOUSE for a holiday party!!! (!!!!!!!!) I’m sure we’ll see the Obamas for 2.5 seconds, but we’re going out of our minds with excitement and constantly pinching ourselves. Obviously, I will report back on anything/everything. My friend Linsey says I should wear this and give the other half to Michelle:) Have you ever been inside the White House? We never have. Hope you have a good one, and here are a few fun links from around the web…

Self control is just empathy with your future self.

My friend Erin just took the coolest family trip to Budapest.

Digging Miss Moss’s gift guides.

How to vacation proof your relationship.

One man’s beautiful letter to his late wife. (“Little projects”… oh, my heart.)

These socks, haha.

Lola, the natural tampon brand, just launched pads. Yes!

What a pretty quilt.

Michelle Obama tells kid interviewers she will not run for president: “We’re out.”

Who’s up for this Christmas drinking game?

Amazon Go is freaking me out a little.

Absolutely beautiful.

La La Land comes out this weekend.

Here’s the Cup of Jo holiday gift guide so far. (I got this for my mom, and I’m excited.) Next week, we’ll be sharing gift ideas for dads and people who are impossible to shop for — like co-workers and in-laws.

Plus, three great comments from readers…

Says Chris on female friendships: “My friends and I have a thing called ‘affirming dinners.’ It started when one of our friends had a horrible breakup; because she was so sad, we all went out and spent all evening telling each other the things we liked about each other and how awesome we were. Now we say to each other when we are feeling sad, ‘Let’s catch up for an affirming dinner!’ Only girls, and we go to a nice restaurant where we have the banquet option and lots of wine!”

Says Emma on work twins: “My boss and I find ourselves twinning way too often. He’s a man in his early 40s, and I’m a woman in my early 20s. I don’t know who this is less flattering for. Essentially we both dress like Justin Long in the old Mac commercials.”

Says Shan on Baby It’s Cold Outside‘s lyrics: “This is a really great article that puts the song in its historical context. I DO love that we are using this song to talk about consent… As feminists, it’s important to question the messages we receive from pop culture. I think it’s also worth noting that ‘Baby It’s Cold Outside’ in its historical context is about a young woman pursuing her own sexual desires in a conservative culture where spending the night with her boyfriend would have caused quite a stir. She’s liberated from society’s expectations of her as a woman in this context, not oppressed or coerced. Thanks for the discussion!”

  1. Kristin says...

thank you for linking the love letter. how beautiful and touching…. made me believe in true love a touch more

  2. Shan says...

Oh, I missed the weekly round-up on Friday, but thanks for including my comment! I love analyzing pop culture with a feminist lens–especially music! Love your blog!

  3. Rebeccah says...

OMG! Update please!! I can’t stop checking your blog site, waiting with baited breathe to hear about your weekend. Even if you have no significant details to share, please share. :-) Hope it was magical!

  4. Martini says...

Can you see me? I’m right over here waving at you. I’ve lived my entire 66 years right here. In fact, that’s the exact view I have when I walk out my front door and facing in the same identical direction. Gives me goosebumps everytime.

It’s killing me that you get to go but I’m very happy for you. It will be beautiful. I’ve been several times. It’s hard not to well up as you stroll through, especially at Christmas with “The President’s Own Marine Band” softly playing gorgeous Christmas music.

My hobby and favorite interests are The White House building and The Presidents.
This President in particular will be sorely missed. Mr. Obama and his family are well loved here in the area. Well loved indeed. A most decent soul if ever.

Wish him farewell, Joanna. We won’t see the likes of him in a very long, long time….if ever.

I’ve got to hear a complete, in depth report of your visit. Must.

  5. Can’t wait to see La La Land. Also, those socks are pretty funny ;) I know a few people who would love those.

Hope you and the fam had a great weekend!

  8. Jamile says...

That’s so exciting! I’ve always wanted to go and to go while the Obamas were there still. I won’t want to go aftet they’re gone. I don’t think I could ever think of the Presidency in the same way again.

  9. Amy Ozeri says...

Excited for you and Alex, hope you had an amazing time. Can’t wait to hear about it! Happy holidays:)

  10. Elizabeth Spence says...

Joanna, speaking of natural tampons, have you heard of menstrual cups? My post partem periods have been more painful and after I switched to cups the pain is gone. They are great and I hardly have to spend money on pads or tampons anymore

  11. I literally just wrote about how the new Amazon store is freaking me out too!

  12. Jessica says...

Joanna- I love reading Richard Feynman’s works, he was often known as the people’s physicist for how much fun and “easier” he made physics for his students. He led an extraordinary life. I’d highly recommend looking him up! Thanks for that beautiful reading of the love letter to his late wife.

  13. Jamey says...

I went to the White House Christmas party when Bush was in office. The president and fist lady stood in a room for the entire party having their photo taken with each guest. We felt so sorry for them that they didn’t get to enjoy the party so we covered our teeth in chocolate truffles and gave them a big grin as we walked up trying to give them a laugh. They did laugh but the photographer rushed us through so fast that we didn’t have time to get all the chocolate off our teeth. Now I have a photo with the president and my teeth are black.

    • Tessa says...

I LOVE YOU!! Jamey, that is awesome-especially because you have the photo to prove it! Slow clap! I cannot even imagine being so chill in front of a president. I actually got to see the President land in his helicopter from the window of the Monument, and it brought tears of excitement to be so close to the Obamas!

  14. Nadine says...

How cool is that, congrats must be in order because you were invited – I don’t know how these things work, but am looking forward to hearing all about it & hope you’ll post pic of what you wear.

  15. Ah so exciting. Well I live by the White House and its a bittersweet realization to many. We will see what people start to put their faith in after Jan 2017. Anywho, thank you for the gift guide. I was able to buy two thank you gifts and many for myself. lol Stay warm, you may even saw me out there lol xx

  16. What a great shot of the Obamas! I visited DC as a child and have big dreams of taking our daughter eventually. Enjoy every moment! I can’t wait to hear about it.

  17. Callie says...

I hope you get to meet the Obamas! I would love to know what you would ask Michelle if you had the chance–as a long-time Cup of Jo reader, I think that would be an incredible interview. Should we start a letter writing campaign to make that happen? ;)

Amazing links this week…. I’m saving the video of Oscar Isaac reading Feynman for later because I am just not ready to cry that much this morning! (I did read the letter though, which is how I know I’ll be a mess. So beautiful.)

  18. Viki says...

Hi Joanna! I live in Budapest and would love to meet you and show you some places in my city. There is a lot going on here. There are beautiful old buildings, tonns of culture, new restaurants popping up every week etc. (By the way Im a fan of Cup of Joe since ages. I used to read your posts during nursing my first son at night huh hard times!)

  19. Oooh what an exciting weekend you have planned! I wish Michelle Obama would run for president, she’d be wonderful, such an inspiring woman! Awesome list as always x

  20. Susan M. says...

So exciting!!! Will you wear navy nails (heehee)? Hope you can relish it. Can’t wait to hear about it. Next you’ll be singing with James Corden!

  21. Seraphim says...

I went on a White House tour a couple of years ago with my husband – he was in DC for work and I tagged along (we left the kids with grandma and grandpa). He’s since been back, but this was my only visit. I was surprised by how moved I was by the history and beauty of the structure and institution, and I felt lucky to experience it while an administration I so admire was in residence. I felt patriotic, which is a concept I think we sometimes forget in everyday life. It was an unforgettable experience.

  22. Tricia says...

How lucky can you get!!! I am envious…

  23. Kat O says...

I completely agree about Baby It’s Cold Outside – I do appreciate the “consensual” version and we can ALWAYS use more conversation around consent, but I’ve always thought it was a flirtatious song more than anything. I still love it!

  24. So lucky that you get to visit the White House! Super excited for you! Also, I love the first link you shared about self-empathy.

  25. Olma says...

I am sooooo excited for you and just a little bit jealous.

  26. Laura says...

Oh, that man’s letter to his late wife. I just cried my eyes out. The “little projects” line struck so close to home. My husband and I love doing projects. Sometimes together, sometimes simultaneously in what we call “parallel play.” I can’t imagine that being taken away from me. What a heart-wrenching letter, beautifully written and beautifully performed.

  27. Love the costa sur crib quilt! We are lucky enough to have a friend who is super talented at quilting – she’s made us some beautiful quilts for our 4 children. They really finish their rooms well. But, if not, I’d totally be buying the costa sur option!
Enjoy the White House! Thanks for all the great links 😊

  28. Karen says...

How exciting! I can’t wait to hear every detail! Enjoy every minute!!

  29. amanda june says...

i just hope this leads to my beauty uniform: michelle obama ;)

    • Christina says...

      Yes! She is amazing :)

    • Laura C. says...

Oh my God that would be so unbelievable!!

    • Bethanne says...

      Yes!

  30. Gah! The White House?! Enjoy that once in a lifetime experience!

  31. Kristian says...

Oh, I loved Budapest and Vienna both so much. That picture brings back memories! We spent a morning there.

  32. Have a fantastic time!! Can’t wait to hear about the holiday party!

As a special education teacher, I am so grateful to you for posting the Absolutely Beautiful link. Yay for inclusive representations!

  33. Katie says...

I really loved the roundup this week. Cup of Jo is the best :)

  34. This is so exciting!!! I can’t wait to hear about it. Have fun:)

  35. Jennifer says...

Oh, wow!!! That is so exciting!!! I can’t wait to read about it next week!

  36. Erin says...

I’m glad they’ve started making changes to pads/tampons. I never really realized how bad the stuff they’re usually made out of can be until a couple of years ago when I suddenly had a horrible allergic reaction to them (after using the same brands for years and never having a reaction). My doctor told me that I should try out different brands, but I knew most of them were made of similar things, so I immediately switched to cloth pads (lunapads!) and never looked back. Best decision ever! It’s an investment up front but in addition to not being made from questionable materials they’re actually pretty easy to clean, less expensive in the long run, and WAY more environmentally friendly than products you have to throw out.

  37. Vicki says...

Happy to have you travelling down to my neck of the woods! Will you have time to explore DC any? If you need any suggestions…

  38. Melissa says...

Hey, Joanna! If you want a tour of the Capitol this weekend send me an email. I work there and am happy to do so if you have time.

  39. Katie says...

    SO EXCITING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I will say hi if I see you in DC :) You should do a city guide sometime! DC has changed a lot in recent years and there are a lot of great places to check out.

  40. Jen says...

Obama holidays! The Best! As for the song “baby it’s cold outside”. Been playing it around the house and my three year old son loves it, I also like to think it is teaching a good lesson for him in a super subtle way. He doesn’t know it’a a commentary in any way :)

  41. Jill Palumbo says...

What are you going to wear? I wouldn’t have a clue what to wear to a party at the White House! How exciting!

  42. Megan says...

I am SO excited to hear about the White House party! So exciting. This morning, watching the video you shared of the Obamas, I realized that I can no longer watch anything with them in public because I found myself tearing up over how much I am going to miss them being in the White House. I’m tearing up just writing that! They will be so missed.

Also – thank you for including great reader comments in your Friday posts. I’ve recently realized how many incredible nuggets I find reading through the comments, but I’m sure I miss some and it’s great to see some highlighted. Thank you!

  43. Margo Quiriconi says...

You will love your White House experience! I’ve had the honor of twice going. Savor every moment. Never will you be in a home that is more perfect and soooo clean. Enjoy!

  44. Melissa says...

Joanna, I’ll be there! If I see you I’m definitely going to come up and say hi!

  45. Isabel says...

That’s so exciting!!! Tell them to return in 4 years, pleeease :P haha

  46. Erin says...

Joanna, we all know Michelle Obama probably reads Cup of Jo. She could be just as excited about meeting you.

Take lots of pics in DC — I used to live there and miss it so much!

  47. How exciting that you’re going to the White House! I visited the White House during George W Bush’s administration (my college choir sang there for the National Day of Prayer) and I remember a lot of waiting before the president and first lady entered the room. Also, I’m really into dishes so I made a point to check the bottom of my teacup during the brunch (they were Lenox). I also pocketed one of the disposable hand towels featuring the White House seal from the rest room!

  48. Rasheeda says...

Whhhhaaat!!! Have fun!! Can’t wait to hear all about it!!!

  49. Hillary says...

The only thing saving me from my extreme jealousy is the anticipation of your recap post. Have the best time. It will be peak life experience for sure.

  50. Betsy says...

So excited for you to go to the White House. My son and I went three years ago. It was so amazing to meet the Obama’s. Enjoy your time. I kept telling my self to be present when I was there. Enjoy the views and make sure you use the bathroom before you go to the receiving line there are not bathrooms upstairs.

  51. Amanda D says...

WOAH. Merry Christmas to you!! Talk about the experience of a lifetime. Please, please post a blog describing every detail!!

    • Amanda D says...

“post on your blog”… Not “post a blog”.. I’m too excited for you to type properly!

  52. Valerie says...

I’m going to be at a White House holiday party next week too!!! Any chance you’ll be there on Tuesday?

    • Valerie says...

Now I’m seeing you said this weekend… Oh well, hope you enjoy your time in DC!

  53. Emily M. says...

That is SO NEAT! Have all the fun! I can’t wait for the recap post….

That is so exciting!! I hope you have a fabulous time!!!

  55. Kasi says...

As a forever reader of yours who feels like I know you, I’m so excited for you to see the Obamas! Best friend necklaces for the win. I can’t wait to read all of the details!

  56. OMG I am so jealous!! Would do anything to meet the Obamas for even a second.

If you need any ideas of things to do in D.C., let me know!! Would love to give suggestions.

    -Nicole

  57. Heather says...

You are going to just die! WH during the holidays is transformed into the absolutely most magical place! The first time I met the Obamas’ I was blown away by how genuine and nice they are. Also, Michelle is gasp worthy beautiful when you meet her in person. Hopefully you will get some of the Presidential M&Ms or Hershey Kisses to take home to the boys. They are usually handed out or will be at your table. I second Anna’s restaurant recs. You are going to have the best time!!

  58. A holiday party with the Obamas? What the what?!? We definitely need a post recapping the trip on Monday!

  59. Adrienne Q says...

My boss just went to a White House holiday party the other day (her husband is a White House correspondent). She said she was actually able to have a brief conversation with Barack and Michelle in the 30 seconds you get to have your picture taken with them, so maybe get your elevator pitch ready? Haha.

  60. Oh how exciting! I must say I am a bit jealous. You will certainly have a fantastic time. Enjoy every moment and take lots of photos.

XOXO, Amy @ Jeans and a Tea
    http://www.jeansandatea.com

  61. I’m so excited to start using Lola tampons! I don’t think I’ve ever been excited to use a tampon. It’s more like, “Ugh. It’s that time again. I guess I have to go buy some tampons.” AHHH! Have fun in DC! That will be so crazy and amazing!

  62. Linds says...

Lord, I am going to miss Michelle Obama!

  63. Sonya says...

That Budapest photo! I went there in October (loved it!) and the Szechenyi Baths was one of the highlights. We went in the early evening so it was dark and in the 40’s outside and I ran the Budapest marathon earlier in the day so it capped off a perfect and tiring day. My friend and I never wanted to leave. It was wonderful! That photo is bringing me back to happy memories. I love that photo of the Obamas you’ve used. Have a great weekend. :)

  64. How exciting! Can’t wait to hear the full report!!!

  65. Ramya says...

Oooh! Any DC plans in the area? There are so many good places to bop into for a warm spiked drink!

  66. Monica says...

OOPS, just opened the naked lady cartoon link at my office!! You gotta warn a sister… nsfw ;) Happy weekend to you. xo

    • L says...

      Me too! Ack! Hahaha.

  67. Woohoo, you are going to have an amazing time, enjoy every second of it. xx

  68. Gabriela says...

Congratulations on getting invited!!!! What a lovely testament to the beautiful space and dialogue you’ve created with your blog :)

  69. GAH!!! Jealous in the best of ways!!!
Now I’m off to check out your links.
(Definitely get the necklace and give the other half to Michelle… If you don’t see Michelle and Oprah is there, then give it to her.)
    :)

  70. Yukie says...

Wow, can I ask how you got so lucky to be invited to a holiday party at the White House? Hope you have an incredible time! As always, thanks for the wonderful links to these Friday posts. I enjoyed the vacation proofing article, because I’m such a huge planner and my SO is not. The one thing that eases the tension for us is acknowledging each other’s contributions, no matter how small. We have these grand expectations for the perfect vacation, but being thanked for the effort you put in definitely contributes to that happy, accomplished feeling. :)

  71. Jen says...

Congratulations on the White House invite! That is such an amazing (and deserved) honour!

  72. You’re what and WHAT?!?!?! That is amazing!! Also totally slip the FLOTUS (or “Shelley’O” as I’m you will soon be calling her over weekly brunches) the BFF necklace. DO IT.

  73. Veronica says...

So exciting! Enjoy every second! Can’t wait for the report :)

  74. OMG STOP IT I JUST FREAKED OUT FOR YOU WITH EXCITEMENT.
Anyway, sorry for all caps, but like. I’m so excited for you to meet every girl’s dream best friend (Michelle, obvs) and report back with ALL THE DETAILS.

    • clearly i was also so excited i forgot all my grammar rules. sheesh.

  75. Sarah Beth says...

Those are such great tips on vacationing in a relationship! One more that my husband and I have adopted after years of traveling together: We are going to get in a fight at the airport, so we apologize ahead of time. We very sincerely apologize while we’re still at home and relaxed, and then in the airport when we’re stressed (we have a 1 year old now, so the tension is REAL) and squabbling, usually the memory of having apologized cuts the tension and makes us laugh. On our last trip, my husband texted me in the car “iaiafasdtvse” — I apologize in advance for anything said during this very stressful experience. Just trying to sort out the code made me laugh!

  76. Anna says...

You’re going to have an amazing time! I haven’t been inside the White House, but I have been to events on the South Lawn.

Here are some favorite spots in DC, since you’re around:
Le Diplomate (best brunch, ever. get the pistachio oatmeal or the salade nicoise)
Rose’s Luxury (once rated the best restaurant in the country, this place is so great. their mission is to make their customers happy and you can really tell. all I’ll say is free food)
Aqua Al 2 (best homemade pasta ever)
2 Amy’s (best pizza in town)

Enjoy your time! I’m secretly hoping I run into you. Ha!

    • Kate says...

Anna knows what she’s talking about!! Those are all phenom restaurants.

I’m partial to 2Amy’s since I live down the street :) . There is a nice wine bar around the corner from 2Amy’s called Barcelona.

Only downside to Rose’s Luxury is that they don’t take reservations and there is always a line!

Grab a couple disposable coffee cups and fill them up with wine, then take a nighttime stroll around the monuments. They are way less crowded and way more beautiful at night! I’ve been to the White House a few times and it’s kind of thrilling!! I’m interested to hear what you think of the White House. Most people tell me it’s a lot smaller that you’d think!

    • heather says...

MOBAMA!!!! I’m so excited for you!!! What are you even going to say? Are you able to act like a normal person around famous people or do you just blurt things out and gush (like me)?

I second Anna’s recommendations. There’s also a wonderful little speakeasy called Harold Black’s above Aqua Al 2 that’s my favorite. For a lighter, laid-back brunch I recommend Bayou Bakery on Capitol Hill – delicious coffee and beignets in an old carriage house in a pretty garden.
