“Begin hunt for avocado-based meal” — haha! Yup! Sounds about right. The only meal that keeps you full and not feeling bloated for a flight.
Just got home from a whirlwind, cross-country trip back home to visit family. My husband isn’t a great flyer, so a lot of our pre-boarding routine has to be down to a science. Security, whiskey, and wait. ;-)
Check you gate # 5 times! Haha! Yep, pretty accurate. You should have someone draw up a funny holiday flying one! I bet it would be hilarious!
My mom was a flight attendant when I was growing up, so we flew a lot but always had to be at the airport super early to list for stand-by, and it was generally stressful because you never knew if you were going to make it onto the plane… even now that I buy full-fare tickets, I can’t shake the feelings of general anxiety and urgency. I like to be early!
However, my husband is (unfortunately) the opposite. He will wait until people START BOARDING and then says he needs to use the bathroom and fill up his water bottle. This makes me want to claw my eyes out, or his. I think he does it to me on purpose, like it’s exposure therapy that is going to eventually chill me out. News flash – you just made your wife/seatmate quite grouchy and now you have to deal with her for the next howevermany hours! We’ll see who prevails in this particular marital kerfuffle.
I love this! I always arrive more than two hours ears for transatlantic flights, im always that person that has way too much time on their hands!
I’ve always gotten to the airport super early, and my husband listens to me because I am militant about travel (like spreadsheets and schedules militant…I’m fun though, I promise)! I get it from my dad who traveled every single week for business and his packing and airport routine were like clockwork (think Clooney in “Up in the Air”). Now that I have kids, I’ve gotten even worse. I have to build in time to “get the wiggles out” in the airport, but not enough time for them to get bored. You also have to consider the bathroom breaks. Ohhh, the bathroom breaks. We always go about 5 minutes before it’s time to line up, and then someone inevitably has to poop right as we’re boarding. The one thing I’ve given up is my carry-on only rule. It just can’t be done with little kids. I will reinstate it when they’re a bit older though!
So this is a timeline sans kids? ;)
Ha! Airports give me more anxiety than anything and I am eternally early for my flight. I’m traveling for work in February and have a 6 a.m. flight. There will be no traffic and no line at security (it’s the first flight of the day), yet somehow I will still have an hour+ to kill.
Hilarious! I do/have done all of those things!!
Haha! This is perfect. Agreed that putting shoes/coat back on after security is ITS OWN THING because that part always stresses me out! Everyone is pushing and shoving and telling you to hurry up! Ha.
My mom always started hurrying us along about 4 hours before the plane was due to leave. Her suitcase was immaculately packed, it felt like, a week in advance. She never forgot things either–so annoying. Mom would roll her giant suitcase out to the garage and then stand there, with sunglasses regardless if it was day or night, and then fume silently until my brother and I stumbled out the door. Back in the day we used to walk her to the gate then she’d complain about how expensive the coffee shop was (this was before Starbucks). To this day I start to feel anxious about leaving for the airport waaaay in advance–thanks mom! :-D
Lol… This is fairly accurate.
should also add the amount of time your mom or dad insist you be there. IF IT’S INTERNATIONAL, BE THERE 97 HOURS EARLY!

I just laughed out loud. So true.
Haha, I’m just glad I live close-ish to the airpot, which takes a lot of the stress out. Though traffic at LAX increases it all tenfold. -__-

You have not included time going back and forth to the loos due to terror of imminent death. At least 20mins to be added. And what about staring at sunglasses in the duty free? While searching for alcohol in a bizarre bottle? So much to do…
Most time you spend more time getting to AP and “Math Problem” than you
are on plane. Frustrating… I stopped (better said: I cut down on flying)…not the best coffee or sandwich or magazine can’t help
UGHHH I’m about to deal with this on the 23rd to fly home. I hate dealing with holiday airport traffic. I sound like Scrooge, I know, but it is always such a mess! I’d rather get there 3 hours early and have a glass of wine… or two!
The struggle is real! My husband made a deal early in our marriage that, if we get to the airport in sufficient time, he buys me a drink! I argue that getting stuck in Paris for an extra day is not the worst thing in the world… (always take a train to CDG, never a bus or taxi).
So true! Love this. As usual!
I love these posts, and they inspired me to follow Mari on Instagram. Her illustrations always make me smile.
Yes but what about getting to the airport? And what if there’s traffic? And what if your ride is late? +4 hours just to be safe. Bring lots of snacks.
Lol, love this
And don’t forget to account for the people who have no clue what it means to go through the security line.
Ha! We do this, too.
Oh so true! :)
