The Lifesaving Product I’m Packing This Summer

Kim Rhodes

Last summer, I had a problem…

My boyfriend and I would often grab food and have a picnic in Washington Square Park. Afterward, we’d take a humid walk around the city, and as the sun set, we’d walk home across the Williamsburg Bridge, playing Would You Rather.

Most of the time, I’d be wearing some sort of flowy dress which means my inner thighs were on fire, and I’m not talking about my muscles. My thighs touch when I walk, and when they’re met with hot, humid weather, it gets dicey. By the time we’d get home, my thighs would be chafed and sore and developing painful little bumps. The next few days, I would hobble around, trying not to let my thighs meet in the middle, even though they inevitably would.

Around the same time, I began to hear about this magical anti-friction balm, perfect for chafed skin. Everyone was raving about it, which meant I naturally ignored it (that’s just my way). I come around to things on my own time, and I was also skeptical…it sounded too good to be true.

Skip to a few weeks ago, as spring entered the picture, I kept seeing videos of Megababe founder Katie Sturino, gleefully rubbing her inner thighs with what looked like deodorant, before heading out to conquer her day. It wasn’t deodorant, though. It was the magical anti-friction balm! I decided why not give my thighs a fighting chance? Enter Megababe Thigh Rescue.

Megababe thigh rescue

Let me tell you: it’s as good as everyone says. A few days ago, I applied it before wearing a pair of straight-leg jeans that can irritate my skin on long walks, and my skin felt like silk all day long, with no irritation, whatsoever. I couldn’t believe it. My favorite part is that it doesn’t feel like a greasy mess when you apply it — it simply becomes a smooth, even barrier on your skin, soothing and protecting you. Just knowing my thighs don’t have to face this summer in danger of chafing gives me so much peace of mind.

Any other summer products I have to try? Let me know!

P.S. Katie Sturino’s week of outfits and finding a reader the perfect spring dress.

  1. Alyssa says...

Megababe’s bust dust is a dang lifesaver for busty women! Whether I’m wearing a sports bra or an underwire bra, I sweat A LOT. Which then makes me itch and get red. This stuff is in a great pump so I just shoot it into my bra and kind of jiggle it all around. WONDERS. Seriously, if I could recommend something for a Seven Wonders of the World to help my sanity, it would be this.

  2. Carol says...

I have loved every megababe product that I have tried! Thigh rescue is also great to prevent irritation on your feet, when wearing sandals/flip flops, particularly early in the summer. Also love the body wipes, which are not overly perfumed. I love Katie Sturino’s style and she’s a fun follow on Instagram.

  3. Yep. I use this. Some days I instead go with a light version of Spanx Higher Power called Skinny Britches.

  4. Cait says...

I’ve heard of this but haven’t tried it yet. I think I need to this year though. Up until a year ago I never wore anything above my knee – how I grew up. Now I wear normal shorts, and although they aren’t short shorts, sometimes my thighs still rub farther down than the shorts go. That’s new for me so I need a solution! With dresses I do prefer shorts, in lieu of a slip. I absolutely refuse to have the clinging or bouncing that happens without something snug underneath! That’s just what I’m comfortable with.

  5. Tammy Thiele says...

Megababe is a favorite of mine (55) and my daughter (21)…both very different body types! It keeps us both comfortable in the summer months! I can’t imagine getting dressed without it!

  6. Rachel says...

YES!!! Thigh rescue is the best and plus: I rub it on my 2 year olds chunky thighs! I guess she gets it from her mama :) love all the deodorants from Megababe as well especially sunny pits!

  7. Jane says...

Kim, your posts just always seem to make me feel better about myself. Thank you for normalizing literally so many things for me I didn’t know I needed to have normalized. Love you, love your authenticity and openness! Thank you for sharing, ordering right now :)

  8. Ga says...

Why oh why don’t the ship to Europe?????????

    • Pam says...

It’s sold on Goop.com & they ship to the EU – looks like there’s a waitlist right now but it should be an option in the future!

  9. Lisa says...

My only regret with Thigh Rescue is that I didn’t have it 30 years ago in my 20’s! Seriously, this is the holy grail product that thick-thighed people have been waiting for. I am a huge fan of Katie Sturino’s – then add on her incredible business model, and I’m a stan. Don’t sleep on the Bust Dust, the Le Tush butt mask (that I use all over tbh), and the hand sanitizer! The best-smelling hand sanitizer ever made. Periodt.

  10. laura says...

Can Katie Sturino make a magical stick that can prep me to be seen by the world again from head to toe? Cause Mama needs that.

    • Molly says...

      Amen

  11. Anne at Large says...

Love my Thigh Rescue! And the season is just beginning… I had to buy an extra stick last summer when my husband discovered mine and absconded with it for use on some chafing that he won’t describe in detail. Thigh Rescue for everybody!

  12. Charlie says...

Ive tried every natural deodorant under the sun.
    Nothing worked.
    Until….

    ***Arm & Hammer Natural Deodorant!***

It’s not fancy. No millennial / minimalist packaging. Just great, all natural deodorant. Highly recommend!

    • Gaby says...

Good to know! None worked for me except Jasmine scented Native. Also, washing my underarms for a full 20 seconds has made a difference.

    • margaret says...

I just recently switched to the Hey Humans deodorant from Target. It’s really good! The toothpaste too. Nice brand – non-gendered marketing, no plastic.

    • m says...

Seconded! And it’s totally affordable/readily available at my local grocery store.

  13. Kate says...

same here! and then I don’t worry about dresses/skirts+windy days either!

  14. Becky says...

I have noticed that my skinny jeans have caused irritation on my legs over the winter. Not so much now. I have super dry skin and the constant rubbing makes it worse. I will add this to my list of things to try!

  15. Nina L says...

Hey Kim, big ups for wearing your broke down Chuck’s. I’m kinda hard on shoes, so all of my athletic type shoes end up looking like that and I wear them ’cause they’re comfy! (Mr. Man hates them, thinks I should only do “cute” , so I wear them to walk the pup…compromise, right?).
I really enjoy your posts, looking forward to many more (hope you’re listening, Joanna 😊)

  16. Jane I. says...

No lie I literally bought a stick of Thigh Rescue this morning! My Target had been out of it weeks and my thighs have been suffering!!! Not really suffering… just wearing biker shorts. But yes, to everyone’s comments, this stuff really does work wonders! I actually really enjoy the Megababe products I’ve tried so far. Their Bust Dust and Magic Powder is the best for fighting swamp ass for us desert folks. I liked the Rosy Pits a lot but when I was pregnant the smell was too much. Still a fan though!

    • Kyrra says...

I’ve been so skeptical of the thigh rescue and the body dust, but as a person who despises humidity and sweating (luckily only 3 months here in Minnesota), I think I need it in my life!

  17. Abesha1 says...

This is great, and it was actually on my list to try this summer, but I have to say… I was hoping “lifesaving” meant Covid immunity, from
    her vaccination.

I hope Cup of Jo will understand maybe a different word choice might have been better, given the times.

    • Jackie says...

I think, given the times, it’s a totally appropriate headline. We are finally, slowly, climbing out of this pandemic. Coming from someone who dealt with some life and death stuff this past year, I personally think it’s ok to talk about “lifesaving” things not involving Covid. It’s hopeful and needed. Onward and upward, ready or not!

    • Lisa says...

It’s lifesaving for me. I understand where you’re coming from, but I trust my oncologist with lifesaving information. From CoJ, the headline about a lifesaving product to ‘PACK’ this summer definitely gave me beauty product or family/kid-related tones. Just my 2 Cents.

  18. KF says...

Haha the second I read thigh chaffing I thought wait does she not know about mega babe? It really is that good!

    • Katie Sturino says...

AHH so glad you love it!!

  19. K says...

I’m here to recommend HOCl spray for all those summer irritations — rashes, itches, burns, bites, some people even use it on red pimples/bacne/assne, nasal congestion, UTIs/UTI prevention, sanitizer, etc. It’s like Windex a la My Big Fat Greek Wedding but actually safe for your skin. I even spray it on my pillow. There’s quite a few brands out there but I keep using Briotech, the least aesthetic one lol.

Also SallyeAnder No Bite Me Bug Repellent Cream works like magic specifically as a repellent, and if you forget to put it on beforehand, it also diminishes bug bites wonderfully after the fact. I’ve put it on many a time in the middle of the night and wake up soothed. I also love the herbal smell!

  20. LK says...

I LOVE Katie Sturino she’s a goddess. Her Le Tush mask is amazing.

    • Katie Sturino says...

      ILY2!! 💞💞

  21. Meredith says...

    THE BEST. nothing like it.

  22. Shelley says...

I wear bike shorts under my dresses but I am tempted to try this now!

    • Katie Sturino says...

Please try it and let me know what you think!!!💞

  23. jrg says...

apropos of nothing i LOVE your nail color in the last picture of the closeup of the stick – so summery!

    • R says...

Agree!!! Love the color, what is it??

    • Lindsey says...

I thought the same exact thing! Looooove these nails. Also, Kim, just wanted to say that I love your posts. Everytime I check my feed and see your byline, I do a little internal jump for joy. Keep up the amazing work!

    • Kim Rhodes says...

Thank you so much! As per usual, it’s some gel color that was a swatch with a million other gels and I just picked it because it’s neon and I wanted to start summer early! haha sorry i’m bad at nail color things. I’ll try to do better. xoxo

  24. Tyler says...

The megababe green deodorant is life changing!

  25. Danielle says...

I’m already a big Thigh Rescue fan for dresses and shorts but I love that you mentioned straight leg jeans! Having accumulated a few pairs of straight leg jeans that are often in a more rigid denim I experienced some chafing in some them and thought it was just me!

  26. Lindsay says...

Just another person chiming in to say I love Megababe and so glad to see them and founder Katie mentioned on here! I follow her for a few years on instagram and she’s one of my favorite follows.

The thigh chafe is sooo great, and I’ve used and loved a ton of their other products. For anyone who the rosy pits deo did not work for, I’ve found success with the new Green Chlorophyll deo they just launched :D

    • Katie Sturino says...

OMG thank you Lindsay, so happy you like Megababe prods☺️☺️

  27. Candice says...

wowow! Today was the first shorts day, and I was instantly reminded of that dreaded summer thigh burn, like little razors. I can’t wait to try this! Thank you thank you!

  28. Izzy says...

Great stuff, but regular old deodorant works too!

    • i gave up on “natural” deodorant. so much $ and product wasted!!! happy for people who like it though!

  29. Rosie says...

I love Thigh Society shorts to prevent chub rub. They’re so comfy!

    • Emmy says...

Seconded! I wear these under dresses, they’re fabulous.

  30. Sarah says...

“everyone was raving about it…which naturally meant I ignored it” FAVORITE. LINE. EVER. Nice to meet you twinsoul.

  31. Emma says...

I use Undersummers (light, comfy underwear shorts) under all my dresses. I actually learned about them in the Cup of Jo comments! They are delightful and liberating (and thigh-saving) :)

  32. Stacey says...

Somehow I knew this would be the topic of the article after reading the headline!! I use Schmidt’s deodorant for thigh chafing, which works pretty well. But good to know about this product! Happy summer wandering.

  33. Joanna says...

Thigh rescue is the best! Honestly, my husband uses it too. Total game changer.

  34. LP says...

In my college running days we used baby oil gel for this! Cheap and easy to find in case anyone needs the same kind of thing at a lower price point

  35. SM says...

Also recommend monistat gel chafe tube for chub rub issues! Always take a tube with me when traveling in the summer.

    • Ann says...

      YES love that stuff

    • Cookie says...

Love that stuff too. Quick tip: it can also be used a makeup primer. Goes on like a dream!

    • Emmy says...

Yes! I love this stuff too! It works so well, maybe the formula is similar to Megababe’s.

  36. Emily says...

I know it’s not the point of this post, but I too actively avoid things I would absolutely love simply because it’s been hyped. Why am I like this? What good does it do me to delay such pleasure for stubborn reasons? I guess I’ll just perpetually be behind the curve in embracing awesome things.

    • Calla says...

Oh my god I’m right there with you. I’m a very stubborn late-adopter on most things for no good reason.

  37. Ginger says...

My skin is SUPER sensitive, so I don’t really go for a topical product if I can help it. I recommend undershorts – silky ones from Undersummers are my go-to, or basic Target cotton bike shorts. There are tons of undershorts on the market right now – cool colors, fabrics, fits, pockets, etc. Bonus is that you don’t have to worry about flashing everyone if your dress catches a gust of wind!

  38. Stacey says...

Thigh Rescue is SO GOOD! And Katie Sturino is really inspiring. I love her series on Instagram where she recreates celebrity outfits, and she always makes a point of saying “it’s never about who wore it better,” which I think is something we all need to hear.

    • Katie Sturino says...

      Stacey, THANK YOU🥰💙

  39. Agnès says...

I love your pink hair. I’d love to try that in my nextlife.

  40. Meg says...

Has anybody tried using this on their feet? On spots where shoes rub?

    • Also Meg says...

Not this specifically but I had a similar blister block made for feet and it did help! I also use clear medical tape in places you won’t see it.

    • CPH says...

I wondered the same thing. What does work for feet is Aquaphor (I may actually have learned this on this site, possibly in the comments section!). I bring a tiny tube with me and if my shoes chafe I periodically rub it on (maybe a few times a day if I’m out all day) and it 100% prevents blisters. It was so life changing because basically all shoes no matter how comfortable give me blisters.

    • karen says...

i was thinking the same thing! (after wearing an uncomfortable pair of shoes yesterday)

    • Ashley says...

Meg I wondered the same thing! I love moleskin but it doesn’t work for all shoes.

    • Bonnie says...

Years ago I discovered that rubbing plain old 99 cent chap stick on the spot worked superbly! I keep a tube just for rubbing on my heels or pinkie toe, whatever.

    • Andrea says...

Body Glide which predates this product, is a rub on silicone that runners use. It works on shoes, sandals, thighs—anywhere you don’t want skin to rub.

    • Rachel says...

Blister-prone lady here. Monistat’s chafing relief powder gel is where it’s at for the toes. There are a few comments above mentioning its magical multi-use capabilities for chub rub and as a makeup primer – can confirm that it’s a dream in both these scenarios as well! Might as well rub it all over my body.

    • Laurel Roberson says...

Compeed anti-blister sticks are where it’s at! I order them on amazon, but I’ve seen them in some Walgreens. I carry one in my purse at all times in case a blister starts to form. They’re amazing.

  41. Elizabeth says...

Love me some Mega Babe, but the real crazy game changer for me was Chub Rub shorts from Snag (a woman owned small business!) They NEVER ever ride up, even after 14 hours, and months of washing. They are SO breathable and comfy. I can’t say enough about them, really. I also now exclusively wear their tights – I’d absolutely buy stock in this company if I could.
(I still use Mega Babe when I’m wearing a dress too short for shorts, but most of the time the shorts aren’t an issue at all.)

    https://snagtights.us/collections/80-denier-opaque-chub-rub-shorts

    • Sharon in Scotland says...

Thank you for saying all of this…………….now I don’t have to!
P.S.Their tights are really long and you can pull the top all the way to your armpits, so comfortable and in a huge range of sizes

    • Sarah says...

I am thrilled!! I can never find wool tights in my size. Just because I’m fat I have to freeze all winter?! Love that they’re size inclusive. Thanks so much for the rec.

  42. Katelyn says...

I love this stuff! I used to use deodorant but this works so much better! Also love Katie’s Insta!

  43. Loren says...

Ilusion 2637 cotton pettipants. I couldn’t live without them!

  44. E says...

My latest discovery is really nice yoga/bike shorts from Nike. I love wearing them under dresses because I have a toddler and bend over a lot, but love wearing dresses in hot weather. The bike shorts keep me from mooning everyone, and also help with thigh chafe! Win win!

  45. Sarah says...

I *love* megababe’s deo! Literally the best natural deo I have ever used; their beachy pits and rosy pits both smell great (I tend to dislike a lot of natty deos because of their patchouli/overpoweringly “natural” scents). They also work all. damn. day.

  46. Amelia says...

oh man thank you for this! I hardly ever wear dresses and when I did recently I was shocked – it really felt physically impossible to walk because of the chafing. (And I was self conscious that I’ve also had discomfort with some jeans – so thanks for mentioning that!) I’m definitely going to try this.

  47. Tara says...

I highly recommend getting some under-dress shorts from Thigh Society. I got a couple pairs last month and they are a game changer. They don’t ride up and they are super lightweight — you forget you’re wearing anything under your light summer dresses!

    • CMG says...

      Great tip! Thanks!

  48. molly says...

I live in Jockey Skimmies under dresses and skirts in the summer. They’re less expensive and less constricting than spanx, but they still smooth and prevent chafing.

    • A says...

      Yes! These are the BEST!

    • Emily says...

Love me some jockey skimmies. There are some sweat wicking ones that are SUPER comfy for hot days. I’ve also got the megababe thigh rescue and highly recommend it.

  49. Beth says...

Thigh rescue is (no hyperbole) a LIFE CHANGER and 100% my desert island product. I swear by it & love that I feel like a normal human going about their day versus having to strategically keep my legs apart or schedule walking breaks or use undershorts/spanx/etc. I keep backups & minis stocked and have given it to skeptical-turned-believer friends numerous times. Thankful for Katie Sturino every sticky summer day & glad you are a convert Kim!

    • Sarah says...

It really is a life changer. Went from only wearing my dresses for short special occasions to all day. Always disliked wearing shorts under skirts. Still rock a slip underneath though. At what price point do maxi dresses stop being so see-through?

  50. trish says...

i used to have this and drove me nuts. several years ago, i stumbled across a video on youtube – unfortunately i don’t know who it was – that had a great solution. mix half coconut oil (not when it’s melted) and half corn starch. spread it on your skin and never think about it again. it’s legit a miracle and easy/cheap to make. i’ve given jars to friends to try, no need to suffer.

    • siri says...

Half by volume? Like 1/2 cup coconut and 1/2 cup cornstarch?

    • Morgan says...

I think maybe like an equal parts coconut oil to cornstarch? Like 1 tsp oil to 1 tsp corn starch?

  51. Hilary says...

I’ve never tried MegaBabe (though I love following Katie on insta!)

I will also say that there is something truly magical about getting yourself a nice short pair of bike shorts for under dresses! Old Navy sells a pair for $10 and it’ll change your summer life!

  52. Mallory says...

I’ve been using megababe’s rose deodorant for 2 years and I love it! I’m still working through a stick of Body Glide I bought years ago when training for a race, which also works great. But I’ll switch to megababe’s to support a woman-owned business after I run out.

  53. Danielle says...

Has anyone tried the deodorant? I’m so curious!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

I’m about to start trying it! I have it on my bathroom counter :)

    • Taylor says...

I tried it through a Texas summer (I used it for a few months to let my body supposedly adjust to going natural) and found I smelled like a lovely but B.O.-infused rose garden.

    • Em says...

The deodorant didn’t work for me at all. I had the Sunny Pits scent. Too bad, it’s cute and smells great in the container.

    • Ana says...

I really really tried with the deodorant. I went through two tubes thinking I could just power through it and make it work. It did not work for me. It gave me a huge rash, and I kept wanting to believe it was my laundry detergent, or my sweatiness, or just my body not being used to the natural goodness of the deodorant… alas. If you go deep enough into the reviews, there are tons of women who have had the same problem. The rash combined with the fact that it doesn’t deodorize THAT well and isn’t antiperspirant meant I had to let the dream go.

    • Megan says...

Yes, I love it, especially the rose one–it smells like Le Labo’s rose perfume. Does it work forever? No. But it works well enough AND the texture is great. (So many natural deos would get coconut oil all over my clothes–a navy or black top would have this layer of sparkly grit on them around the armholes–megababe doesn’t).

    • Mallory says...

Yes! I’ve used Rosy Pits for about 2 years and I am obsessed with the scent. I tend to go like 3 days between showering *shrug* and on the last day I might need to re-apply if it’s hot or I get sweaty, otherwise it works great. I also use megababe’s armpit mask maybe once a week while i’m in the shower and I feel like it helps too! Also curious to try their armpit soap…

    • DG says...

There may be a detox period for you (a week or two, but maybe even a month, no joke), but once it’s over, it works really well! Better than any other natural deo for me. It’s magic. I’m not sure how to tell you to speed up the process other than just washing, exfoliating, and sweating through the stink until it eventually stops. She also has deo wipes you can keep with you in case you need to reapply midday (I’ve never needed to, but having one in my purse relaxes me.)

    • KF says...

The rosy pitts is like my favorite smell ever and it was soothing somehow but didn’t work for me. I hear the green one works for people who the rose one didn’t.

  54. Reanna says...

I pulled it out this morning so I could wear a spring dress! Total thigh-saver!

  55. Emmy says...

I’ve always had success just using my deodorant, which I often carry around in my bag on hot days anyway. It isn’t scented and I’ve never had any issues with irritation… and no need to buy something extra.

  56. RK says...

I love everything about this post. Kim, you’re a brilliant writer and an absolute gem.

  57. Runners will be familiar with this kind of product! I’ve used what is called body glide for years! It’s the same concept – rub it where you might chafe or get blisters. When I was marathon training, I’d put it on my inner thighs, under my sports bra, and lots of places on my feet! It was magic!

    • Andrea says...

Seconding Body Glide. It also is key to keeping your feet blister free when wearing summer shoes. I put it anywhere a pair of sandals will rub against my skin. Total game changer!

    • DG says...

This works better than Body Glide. Thigh Rescue is about 2x the price, but 10x better. I don’t know how she does it!

    • Katy says...

Body glide saved my feet and sports bra chafe when running in summer.

    • Beth says...

+1 Body Glide, but the comment that Thigh Rescue is 10x better has me curious! I use MegaBabe deodorant and love it.

  58. Erin says...

Love that stuff. Her Bust Dust is great for super humid days too!

    • Katelyn says...

I’ve been wanting to try that and her new puff that just came out for putting on body powder!

    • Dawn says...

I second the bust dust! I’ve been using it for three years and it’s a life saver for us busty ladies. (The Thigh Rescue is also a staple in my repertoire!)

  59. Calla says...

Gold bond also sells an anti-chafe stick, it’s been a lifesaver for me!
