Anton’s Bedroom Makeover

Anton's Bedroom Makeover

Seven-year-old Anton (“almost seven-and-a-half”) recently got a bedroom makeover with a little help from Brooklinen. Here’s a peek, if you’d like to see…

Anton's Bedroom Makeover

For the past four years, Anton almost never slept in his room. He’d cuddle up in Toby’s room, or he’d try to crash with Alex and me. Eventually, he admitted that he was scared of the birds on his old wallpaper. It reminded me that even though he acts like a twenty-something, he’s still so little.

So, we wanted something that would really feel like him. Anton chose the peach wall color, which surprised me, since it’s not a typical little kid color. But he wanted a cozy vibe: “I like it, it’s nice, it’s very warming,” he explained.

Anton's Bedroom Makeover

The most important thing was making sure his bed felt soft and inviting. Like all of the beds in our home, we turned to Brooklinen. “My bed is VERY comfy,” he says. “I like it that way.” Anton has the classic cotton sheets, which are always cool and crisp.

Anton's Bedroom Makeover

When it came to choosing the art, Anton was happy to weigh in. The buffalo print hung in our old bedroom, so he was glad to inherit it. Anton is obsessed with music, and his Beatles print reflects that. “It brings back memories of good music,” he told me.

Anton's Bedroom Makeover

These days, when we’re home all the time, our beds have become more important than ever. Great bedding is always a pick-me-up, especially with the change of seasons. Right now, Alex and I have Brooklinen’s indigo linen duvet on our bed, which is the softest landing place at the end of the day. Brooklinen has everything from crisp cotton to linen to sateen to cashmere, depending on what you prefer. If you’re looking for a change (or a great holiday gift for the whole family), I can’t recommend them enough.

Anton's Bedroom Makeover

Overall, Anton is very happy with the way it all turned out. “Every time I come to my room, I feel welcome to my room.”

  1. Jo, thanks for the opportunity for makers/creators to post in the comments! My debut picture book SURGERY ON SUNDAY came out this year. It’s illustrated by the UK-based artist Shane Crampton and is for every kid who needs a dose of brave. You can see purchase options + learn a bit more about me here: katwritesforyou.com

    • Whoops, just realized I posted this on the wrong post! Weekend brain. ;)

  2. Emily O says...

Love his new room! It’s super cozy. :) Would you mind sharing where the cycling print is from? Thank you so much!

  3. Jessica says...

I’m not sure if this was an ‘80s thing, but when I was a kid, my parents gave me a bunch of porcelain dolls for my room. They were terrifying! One was missing an eye and I was sure they came alive at night. I spent most nights in my sister’s room, one toe always touching her. Now that I’m a parent of a toddler, I’m going to have to remember to look at her room through my childhood scaredy cat eyes. Hopefully I don’t inadvertently gift her any sources of terror!

    • Liz says...

I had Kermit and miss piggy sheets that i believed were talking to me at night when I was a toddler. Holy sh!t those sheets scared me so bad.

    • janine says...

My husband’s family has this really old, creepy doll that is a family heirloom – his parents currently have it. They are afraid to get rid of it. Everyone in the family is terrified of it. My husband and I keep hoping that his sister will inherit it and not us!!

  4. Kristie says...

My 2 1/2 year old saw the first picture of Anton and asked “What’s his name?”. I replied that he is Anton. She nodded matter-of-fact-ly and said “Yep, he’s Anton, he’s my cousin, I love him.” Oh that easy confidence of being loved and connected to everyone is sweet!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

Oh my gosh. That’s so sweet!!!

  5. Kristen Gilligan says...

could you please share the peach paint color? i LOVE it!

    • Elena Tartaglia says...

If it’s the same peach he chose in the initial post, it’s Benjamin Moore Peach Parfait.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      Yup!

  6. Jen says...

PEACH!! Great choice, Anton! It looks beautiful.

  7. Amy says...

I am so happy he picked the peach color! That was my fave as well, and for the same reasons. It felt very friendly and warm…love that it feels welcoming to him.

  8. Mullica says...

Anton, you are much more chic than I am. Haha I love your bedroom.

  9. Frankie Rose says...

I love seeing how happy he looks in his new room! As a side note, I love seeing the little truck on his nightstand and I remember little toy cars as a decorative accents in past CoJ home tours:) my 2.5 yr old daughter is currently obsessed with cars and trucks and when I climbed into bed last night I noticed two little toy cars on my nightstand and it made me tear up for some reason (prob because I’m newly pregnant and everything makes me cry). I also love seeing the old Buffalo print and how you reuse things that you love. Thank you for Cup of Jo, it truly is a respite for me!

  10. Sophie says...

Cool room Anton, and a very cool Beatles haircut!

  11. Abbey says...

Loooove the makeover! The peach is perfect. I had Beatles photos all over my walls as a kid and played all the instruments so needless to say Anton seems like a kindred spirit.
    Thank you for sharing!

  12. DEANNE says...

    Who makes the bed?

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      Serena and lily xo

  13. Dana says...

So chic & grown-up for an (almost) 7.5 year old! You can tell it suits his “old soul,” as other readers have mentioned. At 7, I’m pretty sure I was sleeping on Little Mermaid sheets surrounded by illicit sharpie markings on the wall, compliments of my little sister.

  14. I had a clown on my childhood wall I was terrified of but never told my parents until adulthood! I love that you let him collaborate on his space <3.

  15. E says...

I want Anton’s room! And this is going to seem like a weird detail but I love that his linens are all white. I’ve had an all-white bed (except for my buffalo accent pillow… so obviously I’m also obsessed with the print above his headboard) for years and everyone pokes fun at me because of it. Evidently they think it looks like a hotel bed or antiseptic. I just think it looks bright and welcoming. It also grounds my bedroom because I have a ton of beautiful but very loud rugs I’ve collected whiile traveling around South Asia for my job. Anyway, great taste! The Beatles are everything.

  16. Kerry says...

Seven-year-old Anton is cooler than I am, or ever was!

  17. Jess says...

100 % agreeing with Anton. Those beaks are scary.

Just thought how cool it must be to have THEE cup of Jo as your mom. And also how cool it is to have my mom as my mom. I love moms. And non moms. And women. And people in general.

Hope everyone has a great Friday. This paint job randomly brightened mine.

    • Fiona says...

This was lovely, I’m feeling a lot of the lack of mentions of non-moms lately and this made me smile so much. I also love this room and love the color and the coziness and the prints, and this community.

      thank you!

  18. Kate says...

Anton is already 7!!? I can’t believe it!! Seems he was just telling Toby how “pofeckt” his outfit looked haha. These aren’t even my kids (I have none) but…wow, they grow up so fast :’) Thanks for sharing the gorgeous peach walls as well as the realness and joys of parenting with us, Joanna!

  19. Shona says...

Allll the LOLs over “It brings back memories of good music.” What a dear, old soul. So sweet. Thank you!

  20. Tricia M says...

Love it! It’s the sort of scheme that will grow with him. The fluffy rabbits, Disney characters are all a lot of fun but they do date as the child gets older. That buffalo print is a winner though. The boy has style!

  21. miranda says...

Just wondering… why is it bad that anton and toby sleep in the same bed?

growing up, I always shared a room with my brother and when he got his own room, he’d still sometimes come and sleep with me.

why not convert anton’s room into a guest room? Just curious to hear your thoughts behind this.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

Oh not bad at all! They can keep doing that. I just want Anton to feel welcome in his own space, too. Xo

  22. Jessika says...

I love a cool kids room! Great job! A mix of cool-and-collected and playful, the perfect combo. He seems to be happy, too, which is the most important part of a makeover :)

  23. Shawna says...

    It appear Anton has some
some of electric drum set? Wondering where it is from?

    • Kim says...

It looks like a drum practicing pad. They aren’t electric.

  24. Hannah says...

“It brings back memories of good music” – Oh, Anton, spoken like a true 60-year-old! <3 So cute!

He has really good taste, too – love the wall-colour and the prints!

  25. “It brings back memories of good music.” What a heart-bursting thing to say. I imagine Alex about died over that one!

  26. Anton reminds me of my son and I think they have the same birthday! I may have missed it but where’s that drum set from?

  27. Emily Colby says...

Oh sweet boy! I LOVE that he chose that wall color. He’s right! It’s so warm and cozy. :) xoxo

  28. Hadley says...

Where is that firetruck t shirt from??!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      Winter water factory xo

  29. Nadege says...

Wow, such a lovely room. I am nosey and would have loved to see the bird print in his old room.

  30. Patty says...

Oh my goodness, he looks so big! Where does the time go? I love the peach color.

  31. Katherine says...

I don’t know if you posted it anywhere–but the buffalo print!!! Love. Where did you get it? if you remember,,,

    • Joanna Goddard says...

the buffalo photo is by Sharon Montrose of the animal print shop. we had it in our old bedroom and Anton “inherited” it. I love it! :)

    • Anna says...

Juniper print shop has a somewhat similar print that we bought for my daughter’s room last year. I’d been looking for an affordable one for ages and they are having their Black Friday sale now!

    • He’s so big! And adorable. Love your blog and his room. Xx

    • Hi Katherine! My sister (also Katherine) is in artist in California, and she does similar art for children via her website here:
      https://www.littlehowl.com/

I love the buffalo too, and when I saw it… I thought it was Katie’s work!

  32. Lucia says...

Can’t believe Anton is seven! I can remember reading the post about when you & Alex got engaged! 🥺💘💘

  33. Jane I. says...

Oh gosh! He is just so cool. He looks so happy in his new room. Great choice of wall color! I’m curious if he and Toby are still cuddle buddies? When I was a kid I inherited my sister’s queen bed and always hated being in that big empty void all by myself. I would pile my stuffed animals in a barricade around me. Now I have a California King and wish my husband and baby would give me all the space! Funny how life changes.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

Yes he and Toby still frequently crash together — it’s musical beds around here especially during the pandemic :)

  34. emily says...

I love how both of your boys have such strong and distinct styles and have since they were tiny. As someone with no distinct style who constantly doubts her fashion and decorating choices, it’s something I really admire.

  35. Sara says...

Where is his bed frame from? I like it!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      Thanks! Serena and Lily

  36. Ann says...

Is the floor covering wall to wall? Is it a popcorn jute? I really like this look but don’t know what it is called. Thank you!! You guys did an awesome job on this makeover and he looks so happy with it!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

Yes it’s wall to wall. I think it’s sisal? It was here when moved in. I like it bc it hides dirt but doesn’t hurt your feet to walk on! :)

  37. sue says...

Love, Love the room and especially love his comments, He has an old soul.

  38. Molly says...

Super cute room. I just have to say that the toothless stage is my very favorite. Nothing is cuter. My 3rd and last kid is about to be 8 and still hasn’t lost those top teeth. So glad I still have that ahead of me. After that I feel like they are just big kids and all the baby stuff is over. Rock that toothless smile, Anton!!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      Nothing cuter!!! Those little smiles!!

  39. Janey says...

Anton is such a handsome chap! I remember being scared of my curtains as a child…the print was houses but for some reason they looked like witches – something to do with the pointy roofs I think!
Big question is does he now sleep in his own room?!?

    • Joanna Goddard says...

Not quite yet but that’s the goal! (Altho I have to admit, I kind of love when he snuggles in with us:)

    • t says...

Yes, me too! my curtains were vines with flowers and I thought it was crawling with spiders.

  40. Jackie says...

    Hi,
My 6 year old is also really into music and wants drums for Christmas. Do you mind telling me where Anton’s drums are from? Thanks so much!

    • Molly says...

We have the eastar 14” drum set and it has been great. Got it for my son when he was 5 or 6. That said, we do live in a large house in TN. If you’re in an NYC apartment it might not be a great idea;)

  41. Carol B says...

Anton is an old soul and it brings me SO much joy… these little joys are what get me through the day. Thank you Joanna for always being that for us :)

    • Joanna Goddard says...

Oh my gosh, thank you. Always so grateful for this community. Xo

  42. Lizzz says...

I just shot you an email but I wanted to leave a comment here too. I see chapter books on the book shelf and I’m dying to know what he’s reading. A chapter book roundup for emerging readers would be so appreciated!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

Ooh good q! We are on it! (He just LOVED Charlotte’s web.)

    • Molly says...

      Anything by Kate DiCamillo!

    • Cheryl says...

So happy Anton is feeling so at home in his home lol! He kills me.

My eight year old is on a fantasy adventure kick and I’m loving it! It started with “The Voyages of Dr. Doolittle” which led us to “The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe”, more Narnia adventures and now *Swiss Family Robinson.” Nothing captured her imagination like Narnia. Everytime we are sitting around waiting somewhere she asks me if we’ll wind up in Narnia or (worse) shopping around the clothes rounders, she’s always looking for the doorway to another world.

    • YES to this!!! Would love chapter book recommendations. We are flying through books during this pandemic and I can’t keep up with my 6 yo’s appetite.

    • Heather says...

Oh same – we’re flying through them then reading them all over again with our 5 and 4 year old! Since Covid, we actually keep a drawer stocked with new ones and we’ll give one as a treat periodically – its like candy to them!

I’d love to get more recommendations! For our girls, we’re mainly focused on books about girls characters and here’s what they’ve loved:

Ada Lace, on the Case – A girl scientist
Zoey and Sassafras – solving problems for magical creatures with science
Critter Club – group of friends taking care of animals
Jasmine Toguchi – an 8 year old girl – her Japanese-American heritage is incorporated into each book so far
Dory Fantasmagory – our girls crack up endlessly at Dory’s imaginary world

    • Sage says...

Check out Brave Writer on Instagram. @juliebravewriter is a homeschooling guru and her team always has an amazing assortment of book recs for a range of ages. (Regardless of whether you homeschool or not.)

    • Kim says...

We love Mac. B Kid Spy books, also How to train your Dragon, the Iron Giant, Roald Dahl, Beverly Cleary…I would love to see a post about chapter books for young readers.

    • Aya says...

Our five-year-old loved the Where the Mountain Meets the Moon trilogy by Grace Lin and now the story behind Mulan (Before the Sword) by the same author. I thought they might be a little complicated or scary (she covers her ears for Three Little Pigs) but she remained riveted throughout and seems to have a better handle on the characters than I do.

I’d also love to hear chapter book recommendations, especially ones that aren’t too scary.

    • Hilary says...

My husband just reserved everything illustrated by Jon Klassen for our 3-year old and inadvertently brought home the first of a middle grade chapter book series “The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place” about a teen governess who finds out her charges were raised by wolves. I write YA fiction so, of course, I snatched it up and read it in almost one sitting. It was funny and sweet, great twists and turns, and some very age-appropriate mysterious moments. Highly recommend!

  43. Jeannie says...

I love his room! We just painted my daughter’s room BM First Light, which is definitely pinker, but I am still so amazed by how warm and inviting it is! I would wake up every morning with “Here Comes the Sun” or “Good Day Sunshine” stuck in my head. =)

  44. a says...

I have a similar peachy color in the open kitchen/living area of my house and I love it so much! It’s neutral without being stark white (not my taste), goes with every wild color in my art and kitchen accessories, and brings such warmth to the space. Anton I hope you always feel welcome to your room! :)

  45. Anna says...

can you tell me more about the camel pillow?

    • Joanna Goddard says...

It was a gift from a friend! I wish I knew where it was from! Xo

  46. Maria says...

“It brings back memories of good music” omg spoken like a true little twenty-something-year-old, hah! love this room, I’d happily decorate my own exactly like this, great taste Anton!

  47. Emily says...

I love the peach color! My old guest room slash creative space had light pink walls and it make it so cozy yet bright.

Also, Anton reminds me of the kid in Love Actually! Something about his carefree look and the drums.

  48. Kate says...

It looks great!! The navy + peach combo is great and looks awesome with the artwork. He looks so comfortable and happy!

As an adult I LOVE his old wallpaper… and scoured the previous post when it came out looking to see if you had mentioned who makes it… can you share?

Thanks!! And so nice to see a peek of a grown-up Anton!

  49. Sage says...

His quote about the Beatles print! Oh my goodness, hahaha. Your boys are just amazing. :)

  50. SP says...

love the peachy walls! and oh my gosh, anton is adorable in his little ripped up jeans! he is such a mini punk rocker!

  51. celeste says...

Is he getting a drum set for Christmas? :) Someone I work for fondly remembers getting his son a drum set for Christmas and now he’s 20-something and in a jazz trio. Live the missing teeth too, be still my heart.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

Just maybe :) And his missing teeth kill me so much. I always tell him never to grow the new ones.

  52. Agnès says...

I would love this bedroom for me honestly! (love that bed)

  53. Denise says...

I love the peach wall color. I was rooting for peach parfait all along. It looks warm & glowy in Anton’s room. Also that bison is awesome. I want a room like Anton’s.

  54. Tiffani says...

His missing teeth are so adorable! And it got me right in the feels that he was scared of the birds on his wallpaper. The room looks great!

    • Jessica says...

      What a sweet room—love, love.

This could be filed under “none of my business” but where’s Toby these days? Has he hit the age where he’d rather not be photographed? I just noticed a subtle lack of Toby updates and thought I’d check in about it, if that’s an ok thing to do?

    • Joanna Goddard says...

Yes he’s the grand old age of ten so he doesn’t always want to be photographed. But he’s doing well and staying cozy during quarantine! Xoxo

    • M says...

Just saw Jo’s reply- major parent points for respecting his autonomy and wishes on this. You set a great example on a somewhat new issue in parenting that I don’t think gets talked about enough in the family blogging world. All the best to Toby (and the whole family!) this holiday season.

  55. Abby says...

Love this–where is the white nightstand from? Thanks!

    • Elisabeth says...

I had the same question. It’s adorable!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

It was from the Land of Nod which is now closed. I’m sorry!

    • Becca says...

I think Land of Nod is now Crate & Kids, but I could be mistaken. Adorable bedroom, and kiddo!

  56. Anna says...

“Every time I come to my room, I feel welcome to my room.” GOALS.

    • b says...

Seriously. Working from home since May has turned my bedroom in a bedroom/office/living room/library space. The claustrophobia is real.

  57. Hope says...

That first photo with the guest star, tooth gap. Pure joy!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      Hahaha <3

  58. Shelley says...

So happy he went with the peachy tone. So warm and looks amazing with his art and pops of color around the room! Does he sleep in his bed more now or still mainly crashes with everyone else :)

    • Joanna Goddard says...

He’s now mainly crashing with Alex and me but we are working on it! Hahaha

    • Shelley says...

I love it! My boys are still in their cribs (3 and 20 months). I am excited for them to be a little older and sneak into bed haha. It’ll all go too fast!

    • Emilie says...

My daughter is three and while she falls asleep in her own room, she finishes every single night in our bed. I end up breastfeeding her 2-months old brother on one side and cuddling her on the other! It’s uncomfortable but precious at the same time.

  59. kim m says...

Bedside table or bench? Love the peach; nice choice Anton!

  60. Alison says...

    “Scared of the birds” awe!!

  61. Sara says...

What’s the color of paint? I love that idea of a lighter color that’s not white or yellow but would be appropriate for a kids room. My daughter’s room is still neon green from the previous owners, and she wants pink but someday it’ll be our son’s room, so peach seems like a good compromise :)

    • Joanna Goddard says...

the paint is Benjamin Moore peach parfait. we love it!

    • Joanne says...

      Looks absolutely wonderful! Great choice!!

  62. Lana says...

So, I can’t help but see that disco ball on the floor and I have to ask: Are you going to hang it? And if so, where? I keep thinking that ten year old would LOVE one, but I also think it might end up…under the bed. 😂
Anxiously awaiting the tween gift guide, bc ten year old girls—whose parents don’t give them iPhones—are notoriously hard to shop for!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

we are actually putting it on the windowsill and it looks gorgeous during the day. I know what you mean about never actually hanging it!

    • Diana says...

My ten year old daughter who sadly isn’t getting an iPhone loves the disco ball we hung in her window. It makes her room so magical when the sun shines in and there is shimmery light everywhere. Good luck with the Christmas shopping. It is so hard to avoid the allure of tech at this age. Her parents even have flip phones. We are impossible cases.

  63. Mckenzie says...

Love that accent pillow! Where is it from?

    • Joanna Goddard says...

dusen dusen! it moves around our house all the time, haha. right now it’s on the sofa.

  64. Diana says...

such a cute room! what size is his bed? and can i ask what pillows you guys use? (adults and kids). Thanks!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

he has a queen bed — it was our old bed before we moved into this apartment. it’s great for cuddling and for when we had overnight guests.

  65. liz says...

Good job, Anton (and co)! it looks so cute and cozy!! I can’t get over how adult his room looks. Am I the only one who had movie posters and cut outs from tweenie magazines taped and thumb tacked all over their walls? <3

    • Lana says...

Hahah! I did, too! I think decorating kids rooms is is a fairly recent trend. Is it? Also, if left to their own devices my kids would have glow in the dark stars and Taylor Swift posters covering their walls. PS: I mostly leave them to their own devices. Hahah!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

on the wall you can’t see he has printed-out-and-cut-up photos of basketball players! :)

    • liz says...

haha oh yeah, I had glow in the dark stars on the ceiling too! Almost forgot to mention, my parents let me decide what color to paint it when I was little and I went with medium blue walls and seafoam green molding. I can’t. In retrospect, my parents should have 100% intervened!! Much prefer Anton’s style! Also, that bed!!

    • Christina says...

Ahem…. My husband and I have glow in the dark stars in our bedroom :-). They are so cozy! Our children have them too. We split two packs between our four rooms!

    • liz says...

      love it!

  66. Connor says...

His room looks great! I’ll have to check out Brooklinen too.

Joanna – Would you mind sharing where Anton’s firetruck shirt is from?
    Thanks!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      winter water factory xo

  67. Jade says...

Oh my goodness! Anton looks like such a little Beatle!

  68. Mrs. P says...

Gosh he is so cute! The wall color really makes the blue bed pop and I love that bed, can you tell me who makes it?

    • Joanna Goddard says...

Thank you! Serena & Lily! xo

    • Lauren B says...

I was just about to ask the same question! Our 6 year old is getting to re-decorate his room, and I want to put that bed on his list to choose from.
