My Beauty Uniform: Kim Rhodes

Kim Rhodes, our beloved associate editor, moved from Oklahoma to New York three years ago (and we’re so glad she did). “In Brooklyn, I feel like I can be as crazy with my style as I want to be,” she says. Here, Kim shares her morning rituals, the product that makes her skin glow and how her hair is all about extremes…

How did your style change when you moved to New York from Oklahoma?
In small town Oklahoma, everyone was in each other’s business, but in New York, everyone is like, I literally don’t care what you do. It’s so refreshing. No one will look at me sideways if I have pink hair; so do 12,000 other people in the city right now.

What are you up to during quarantine?
Right now we’re into this new HBO show called Lovecraft Country. Scary sci-fi usually isn’t my thing at all, but the show is set during the pre-civil-rights 1950s era and the heroes are Black so they’re dealing with racism in their town and fighting both monsters and the people that live next door. It’s gripping and thrilling. Ashley C. Ford does a podcast about it — she loves horror and gore and all that stuff — and it’s really interesting to hear.

Are you counting the days until this is all over?
Whenever New York opens up, it will be a party for a week straight. People are leaving New York, but don’t you want to live through the bad times to get to the good times? As a writer, I’m like, it’s all such good material! We will be like, we lived through this and we saw it turn around again.

What do your mornings look like?
I get up around 8:30 a.m., splash warm water on my face, and drink a glass of water before I do anything else. I put on chill music like Lianne La Havas or do Yoga with Adrienne to wake up my body. It helps me center myself before I begin the day. After that, I usually have a bowl of cereal with oat milk and a couple scrambled eggs, then run around the corner to grab a cup of coffee. Being outside early helps me get out of my head and out of my apartment — and helps me keep perspective.

What’s your skincare routine?
After Allison Rhone’s beauty uniform, I decided to experiment with Glossier products. I love Glossier Milky Jelly Cream Cleanser as a mild cleanser through the week, and I use an exfoliant cleanser at least once a week. I use a Boie silicone face scrubber, for a little extra oomph and it always does the trick. The next step I picked up from my boyfriend in quarantine — toner. I use Dickinson’s Witch Hazel hydrating toner after cleansing, and I swear after a couple of uses my skin’s texture became so even and smooth. Next I use Glossier Priming Moisturizer. I love that it leaves a soft, matte finish but still has plenty of moisture. My face is really dry, so it’s not always easy to get that balance right. And finally, my favorite step — serum! I’d never used a serum until a few months ago, but figured now was the time to start. I apply it after moisturizing, otherwise my skin will get too dry. I love how Glossier’s Super Glow serum makes my skin glowy and vibrant.

What about in the shower?
I usually shower at night, as a way to help me wind down and wash off the day. I love fresh lavender — it’s so earthy and grounding — so I use Dr. Bronner’s lavender bar soap with an exfoliating loofah. It leaves my skin super soft and fragrant. Afterward I follow with Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion for Dry Skin – it quenches my dry skin without leaving it greasy.

What’s your relationship to your hair?
I’ve always been a fan of extremes, so I love my hair most when it’s in long braids or is short short. One of the times I’ve felt most me was when I had pink braids. I still think about them all the time! The other time was when I shaved my head and bleached it. A couple months ago, Steven was giving me a trim and cut my hair to the point where I was basically bald (he forgot to put the guard on!) but I just rolled with it and actually really loved it after a while. Right now I use jojoba oil on my scalp and Shimmer Lights purple shampoo and conditioner to keep my hair from turning too yellow.

Have you ever had any regrettable beauty moments?
Oh, yes. In 2012 I decided to cut my hair short for the first time and I literally said, “Give me the Kris Jenner.” I was dead set on having a hairstyle like hers — I was obsessed. I was so excited that day I did my own photo shoot in a Gap dressing room. Looking back on it is hilarious but I don’t regret it! I wanted the quintessential white girl short haircut and I got it!

What about makeup?
I rarely wear makeup because I prefer to have a fresh face, but when I do, I use IT Cosmetics CC+ Illumination cream in Rich Honey. I usually hate the way foundation feels on my skin, but this one is so light. I also love that it’s a full coverage sunscreen and anti-aging serum, all in one. For eyes, I use the Urban Decay Naked3 palette. It has all the golds and rich bronzes that set my skin off just right. I finish off with E.L.F. liquid eyeliner, which has a wide handle for easy application. I think I’ve finally reached the intermediate level of eye liner application.

My Beauty Uniform: Kim Rhodes

And lips?
I always go with a bold lip, even if I’m not wearing any other makeup. My favorite is Stunna Lip Paint by Fenty, in Uncensored. It’s the perfect bold, bright red for all occasions. Another more subtle red I love is Beso by Stila. They have the best brick reds and oranges for the colder months, which I’m super excited about. For everyday wear, I use Glossier Balm Dotcom. The mango is my favorite because it has a tiny orange tint.

What do you like to do for nails?
A little over a year ago, I saw an image from a photo shoot with red nails and light pink nails. I tried it once and now it’s become my thing. I mix it up with different shades and colors for different seasons, and just whatever I think will look fun. It’s a good way to take your regular manicure to the next level and create a color story!

Okay, here are some lightning-round questions.
How would you describe yourself in five words?
Funny, vibrant, writer, loving, crazy.
What are your favorite movies? My Best Friend’s Wedding is my go-to when I’m hanging out, About Time, and Rear Window is one of Steven’s favorites, so we just watched it together and I loved it.
Your favorite food? I’ll be boring and say pizza. I just had the best New York pizza I’ve ever had the other day at L&B Spumoni Gardens.
Favorite place in the world? I want to say a place in Europe, but I haven’t been to Europe yet. I know that will be my favorite place. Past-life me already knows.
Book character you’d want to be friends with? Jo from Little Women! I love her.

Do you have a beauty philosophy?
I’d say find what makes you feel powerful, even if that powerful feeling varies day to day. Growing up, I assumed I was ugly because I was in predominantly white spaces and didn’t see my beauty reflected back to me almost anywhere. It took me a long time to realize there’s nothing wrong with the thick build of my body, my big eyes or my brown skin. My relationship with my body has drastically changed in the past few years as I’ve discovered what I’m capable of mentally and physically. There are times that I’ve felt prettier and better about the amount of fat on my body, but right now I feel powerful, and that in itself carries its own weight of beauty.

Thank you so much, Kim!

P.S. More beauty uniforms, including a hilarious author and a Chicago photographer.

I totally rocked the red and pink nails for a wedding this weekend! With our faces covered in masks (and our seats very well distanced) it was the “little something extra but not too extra” that I needed. Thanks Kim for your inspiration!

  5. Laura says...

Im tearing up slightly at that final sentence. Hit a nerve. I can relate. Love the Beauty Uniform series, and love Kim.

Also, painting my nails red and pink immediately after I post this:).

  6. Jessie says...

I LOVED this beauty uniform. Kim has such warmth and beauty. I love her nails and her idea that beauty=power. Lovely!

  7. Jaime says...

I love that your favorite place is a place you have not been! It reminds me of a conversation I had a few years ago that I think about often—I was traveling in Turkey and speaking with a group of new friends. We were sharing our favorite foods and one of the men, knowing that I lived in Arizona near the Mexican border, told me his favorite food was tacos–that he had never had one but that he knew he would love it if he tried one. I think of him often still five years later and sincerely hope he has had the chance to try a proper taco!

  8. Kara says...

I love Kim’s pink nail polish–beautiful. Also she has a really versatile look. I feel like I look pretty much the same most of the time–I need to mix things up a bit and be more adventurous!

  9. K says...

Love the idea of having red nails and pink nails! Was looking for an good way to spice up my nails and this seems easy enough for clumsy me to do myself! So pretty!

  12. Andrea says...

You’re lovely, Kim. I’m going to try your nail polish technique this weekend. I hope you get to visit Europe soon. :) xo

  13. Claire says...

I love reading your posts, Kim, and getting to know you further. Reading this post, the word that I kept repeating to myself was powerful. I love the confidence with which you make your choices and live your life. I know it takes courage and there are moments when you’re likely filled with doubt, but what comes across is your willingness to try new things, see what happens, and find something enjoyable in the results. You inspire me to be less hesitant and step out of my shell a little! :)

  14. Jennifer says...

I know Europe will be my favorite place too even though I haven’t been – lol. My guess is somewhere in France

  15. I’m simply never disappointed by these beauty uniform posts. Also, I can’t get enough of Kim. We love her!!

  16. Allyson says...

Kim is amazing. I love her perspective and her Beauty Uniform! She is stunning and her style is playful and I’m dying for those white reeboks with the gum sole! Such a great add to the CoJ team. As a Midwesterner, it’s fun to see how she’s adapted to NYC. I want to be her when I grow up. :)

  17. Allison says...

Thanks Kim!! Would you mind sharing where you got the brown shearling coat in the first photo? Thanks!

  18. Megan Raitano says...

Yayay! Love Kim! Painting my nails right nowwww.

  19. Lauren E. says...

That first look is everything. I love every single piece of it.

Also, you really do have the most gorgeous jewelry, Kim!! I need to know where to buy affordable, good quality gold.

  20. Anna says...

Love the pink braids on you, Kim! And which Reeboks are you wearing? They’re so classic!

  21. Amy says...

Can you get some actual skin gurus on here? Caroline Hirons? Gothmista? Heck, even no BS Beauty off YouTube? I’d love to see people with crafted beauty routines.

    • Rachel says...

It sounds like you just listed three places you can go for the information you desire! I love these beauty routines because they’re like an inside scoop from a lovely colleague or neighbor, or beautiful woman you see in Whole Foods.

    • H says...

Caroline Hirons was recently on an episode of the podcast Forever35 – you should listen I bet you’d enjoy it! It was fascinating hearing from a skin professional!!! Especially about certain cult fav products :)

  22. Rachel says...

Kim is just beautiful. I love what you said about living in NYC right now. I live in New Orleans and truthfully, I am thinking about jumping ship. Does it make sense to stay in a place where the economy is dependent of tourism?! I own a house and a business here and I am so scared to see what happens to the economy. I also love the city and want to stick it out until we’re on the other side of things. Anyone else going through this?!

  23. Vero says...

I love this Kim! Beautiful, poignant. A breath of fresh air :)

  24. Kelly says...

Love this and love Kim! What a strong and beautiful woman!

  25. c says...

Love your style! Can you please share where you got your signet ring from? I know you said some came from etsy but it’s hard to tell which one that is (they don’t always look like the pictures) and I love the one you have!

  26. Lauren E says...

The nails! Totally influenced :-) Thanks, Kim!

  27. Charlie M. says...

    POWERFUL. That’s exactly it.

That’s what I’ve been going for and that’s how I feel when I’m at my best, and I didn’t even know it until Kim said it.

  28. Em says...

Am I the only one who needs to know how Kim is floating in the first photo?!

More importantly- thank you for sharing Kim! You are an inspiration xo

    • Kate says...

HAHA! Pretty sure she’s jumping! Or she’s being picked up by the giant’s fingers 🤔

  29. Maria says...

Love Kim posts and I loooove the Boie face scrubber too! It’s the only Instagram ad I’ve fully fallen for and I have zero regrets!

  30. Helena says...

“find what makes you feel powerful” – that’s perfect. She nailed it.

  31. Elena says...

I am so curious about the coin (?) necklace in your shower photo. Is it a coin and if so from where?

    • Kate says...

It looks a bit like the constellation necklace from Mejuri

  32. Saundra says...

I adore Kim!!! Can you tell us where the sweater with the yellow and black stripes is from??

  33. L says...

Kim! That sheer polka dot shirt! That cardigan! I think I’m in love. Where are you shopping?

  34. Karen T. says...

Stunner!! Love every bit of this!

  35. Emie says...

Your beauty uniform is fabulous. I especially love your attention to your emotional well-being (so many of us forget about that) and that gorgeous smile! I also like your approach to your hair… you seem to roll with the flow and try different things. The pink braids were one of my favorites along with the “Kris Jenner”… but the buzz cut is looking pretty great right about now. I haven’t had a hair cut in 6 months and I can’t stand it… I’ve actually thought about buzzing it myself. TFS

  36. Soph says...

I love Kim’s ‘fresh face’ comment! She’s radiant!

  37. Rebecca says...

Love her nail trick, love her outfits!!! Such style!

  38. Tara says...

    Great post!

  39. ls says...

How come no one has mentioned the dimples?? Her smile makes me melt!

  40. I love Kim’s looks in the pink braids and in the main photo with short hair. Also love that she doesn’t often wear makeup. I have definitely been embracing that since quarantine. The pizza comment makes me wish I lived in New York!

  41. Lauren Cesca says...

love you, kim! you are beautiful and have brilliant style.

    • Nikki p says...

Could not agree more! Love Kim! So beautiful and brilliant. Your Instagram stories make me laugh/cry/think everyday.

  42. Jen says...

What a beauty Kim is, and what a delightful member of your team she must be. I love what she said about people being ready for a week straight of parties after NY finally opens up. I think that is probably true of the culture at large, don’t you think? Weren’t the roaring 20s right after the 1918 pandemic finally loosened its grip? I doubt if that timing is a coincidence. Granted, the Great War was also just over, but still.

Also, I love what Kim shared about taking in and wanting to process and write about the good and bad times she is experiencing.
As Nora Ephron’s own mother said to her, “Everything is copy.” Seems extra applicable for writers right now.

  43. Jade says...

Not to sound totally creepy – I have wanted to be friends with Kim since she first introduced herself in 2019 and said that she loved Jim Henson. Reading about your Love of My Best Friends Wedding and seeing your pink/red manicures cements in my mind that you Kim would be such a cool friend! I hope you get to Europe when it is safe to do so and fall in LOVE with it! (Gelato in Italy is a must !)

  44. allison says...

to this post I say: yes (clap emoji) girl (clap emoji) !!!

i feel like we’d be work wives if we worked in an office together. you had me at “my best friend’s wedding.” also, I want a lipstick that is the exact color of your natural lips! lmk if that exists.

  45. Hilary says...

I always love when Kim’s byline shows up…so fun! Love the two toned nails especially. We live in Colorado, we everyone has one of two styles: CA hipster casual or Colorado outdoorsy. I wish I lived in NYC if only for the daily fashion sightings!

  46. Leslie says...

I’m not even mad about the Kris Jenner 🤣. At least you got that lewk out of the way early in life.

  47. Rebecca says...

My Best Friend’s Wedding. Yeeeessssssssss! Thanks for sharing!

  48. Sarah says...

Love your beauty post Kim! My girls are biracial and I am always telling them how lucky they are to be able to have so many different hairstyles. They can have curly, straight, braids, twists, cornrows, buns, pigtails, so many options! My oldest recently had pink and purple braids which your pink braids reminded me of. Thanks for sharing your beauty tips!

    • Sarah says...

Oh my goodness, I love seeing Los Poblanos pop up on here, I’ve done a bunch of photo work for them and they are truly delightful. Very worthy of a CoJ feature!

  49. K says...

Kim, this is a beautiful beauty uniform.

Separately, I was thinking about how cool it would be if CoJ had comment wall. I imagine it would be hard to manage, but this is such a great community and sometimes I find myself wanting to share something and have CoJ-ers either join me in celebration or offer words of encouragement. That is to say, CoJ team, you have done an outstanding job at cultivating a wonderful group of followers. Thank you.

    • Sarah says...

I would love that, too. Maybe a Facebook group?

  50. fae says...

omgggg kim i love about time too! my partner is always roasting me for watching it too much, but it’s a perfect movie! also rachel mcadams’s wardrobe in it! is! so! awesome!

  51. Sarah says...

YAY KIM. I love all of her articles–I’m so glad we got the chance to learn more about her in one of my all time favorite CoJ series! Also brb ordering pink and red nail polish from Ulta

  52. I have been WAITING for Kim’s routine. What a treat!!

  53. Marisa says...

The candlelit photo – so beautiful! What a lovely and uplifting post!

  54. Rosalie says...

Love this! Kim is the best!!!

  55. Sarz says...

Ah, Kim, I’m just such a fangirl. You can’t write a bad piece, and you don’t have a bad look. Even the Kris Jenner – still a stunner. 🤣

  56. Christine says...

I love Kim! She’s radiant and joyful — just love her style! I especially love how she sees herself being most beautiful when she feels strong. I don’t think I’m alone in saying this, but I’ve been feeling a little less-than-perfect during these times (grown out, faded hair, few extra quar lbs, etc.) and I really needed to be reminded that who cares because I am at the very same time healthy, rested and strong. Such a great reminder. Thank you Kim and CoJ for this one!

  57. Lindsey says...

Gah! I love all of this but especially Kim’s look with the round glasses, black jeans, and cropped cardi- it’s perfection! I’ve so enjoyed reading Kim’s posts- I love her perspective and way with words (smart but approachable, just like the rest of CoJ), and now her style too!

  58. Nicole Preston says...

Can Cup of Jo write a piece about bras? I notice that in one of these photos Kim and her companion are not wearing bras. Since entering the COVID era, I am definitely not wearing bras as frequently, and have kissed underwire goodbye. I still feel like I need to wearing one on my infrequent trips into public, but I am inspired to start considering why I am doing that. I definitely need a bra to be comfortable when I work-out, but I actually don’t know what it feels like to move around the world without a bra in my adult body.

    • Anne St.Jean says...

Same here – I’m just done with underwire. It’s so constricting and uncomfortable. And I was observing to my husband that he and most other men in the U.S., at least, don’t really see boobs outside of bras as “real” boobs. The shape of a boob in a bra is how they think boobs look, when for a lot of women, that shape is pretty artificial. I’m getting used to how I look without a bra in different tops, but it’s pretty weird how “wrong” it looks when…that’s literally just my body. I still feel self conscious in public with my 32A’s out and about under a thin shirt, but I hope I can get past it and it becomes normal enough that I don’t get stares!

Also weird how early some girls are introduced to bras. I was given my first “undershirt” at about 11. That’s kind of insane, that I was still a child but my mom was afraid I looked too sexual and needed extra coverage. That’s when I remember starting to feel self-conscious about my body. Food for thought!

    • Eleanor says...

I was looking for mention of her companion– it’s artist Mari Andrew (featured a few weeks back) and I just think it’s a little weird to pick a photo that you can see up her skirt so much? Love Kim, love Mari, love CoJ, just trying to watch out for a friend!

**also would totally read a bra piece!! I gave up underwires in a big way. Even for dates.

    • Chris says...

Totally agree, Eleanor! I was wondering why they would pick a picture where you can see up that poor woman’s dress. Love the post otherwise and with you 100% on being done with underwires.

  59. Keri says...

“Right now I feel powerful.” That’s awesome! My daughter is 2 months old and I have already been repeating to her how strong she is, so she’ll never doubt it. I think I’ll adopt this mantra for us both – “I am powerful.”

  60. dahlia says...

I have loved getting to know Kim during her time at Cup of Jo, and it was SO MUCH FUN to see all these different hairstyles! It says something really beautiful to me about Kim’s comfort and certainty with who she is that she’s so willing to keep changing. My favorite hairdo was the cardigan shot near the end; that is a GLORIOUS hairstyle! I also love the blonde fuzz! And everything about that last shot, tender over dinner. The LOVE! Ahhhhhhh.

Looking forward to hearing about Europe and hoping it can be soon!

  61. Lori says...

I loved this! Kim is so beautiful and vibrant – it comes through in both her writing and the photos of her. And I’m now going to polish my nails in pink and red!

  62. Michaela says...

I love this so much. I definitely want to try the nail colors. Also I am amazed how stunning you look with such different hair. I wish I were that bold.

Also, are you having out with Mari in that picture? So many internet brain crushes surfacing in one post!

  63. erin. says...

whelp, she is such a delight!

  64. Kari says...

Love Kim’s style and writing!! Thanks for being such a joyful presence.

  65. anna says...

Reaaaally giggled at the “give me the kris jenner” story hahaha. Thanks for the midday laugh, Kim! Love following along with you on instagram and your pieces on CoJ are so smart / witty / amusing as well :)

  66. A says...

I live for Kim’s pieces. Such beautiful writing and I want to be friends NOW. (I am also going to paint my nails different on both hands this weekend because that’s genius.) more Kim please!!

  67. Jessi says...

I remember your nails when they were posted on instagram and I immediately had mine done the same at my next manicure! Loved them!

  68. Lynn-Holly Wielenga says...

Oh this is a fun one to read! Thanks for sharing Kim! I also moved from Oklahoma to New York, so much of what you wrote resonated, especially the idea that you can wear whatever you want, look however you want, and people won’t care at all. It’s lovely. Also, About Time!! Such a marvelous movie. Once, when Jon and I lived in Texas, some of our friends had a baby, and they were the first of our close friends to have one. Everything had been purchased from their registry, and we had no idea what to get people with a baby… so we brought them diapers, frozen pizza, and About Time. We figured that at some point, they’d want an easy, comforting, no-effort meal, and movie to watch after or during the late-night nursing sessions. Now, over five years later, we have a baby of our own, and I still stand by that present idea. Newborn stage is hard, but pizza + a marvelous movie can be a nice, momentary reprieve.

  69. Cynthia says...

That candlelit photo is so beautiful

    • Anna says...

Seconding this – so, so stunning.

  70. Emma says...

*immediately tracks down any and all red and pink nail polish that I posses to paint my nails like Kim’s.*

  71. MJ says...

Love this, Kim. You are stunning. May I ask where you got your gold herringbone necklace? xx

    • Kim Rhodes says...

Thanks, MJ! I got mine from Amazon but I also love this one from Madewell!

  72. Amy says...

Really enjoyed reading Kim’s beauty uniform – I love how adventurous and free-spirited she is with her beauty philosophy. Super happy that Kim is part of the Cup of Jo team!

  73. Ro says...

Kim, your style is exactly what I want mine to look like, from the cute sneakers, to the metal glasses, to the mismatched nail polish. I’ve been going through an identity crisis after moving to a new city. Looks like I might have to do a bit of shopping ;) But more importantly, I love the message that you’re sending about feeling strong because of what you’re capable of mentally and physically. Isn’t it so cool to realize you’re a badass?

  74. Katie Gillum says...

So gorgeous! Where is the black & white polka dot dress from? It looks so cute with the sneakers.

    • Kim Rhodes says...

Thank you, Ro! It’s from ASOS!

  75. Becca says...

    Gorgeous! Always love this series!

  76. DaynaC says...

I completely understand the part about not seeing your beauty reflected! Your skin, your smile, AH-MAZING. You’re giving me the courage to try new things and be okay with that. This was right on time. Thank you thank you. You’re absolutely breathtaking in features and style.

Btw, totally stealing your nails. Thx!

  77. L says...

What a treat – thanks for sharing your beauty and wisdom! Yes to beauty coming from strength! Love all your hairstyles and that stoop sitting outfit is fire. xo

  78. Julie says...

Kim you’re so cute! I love your K necklace.

  79. Anita says...

I look forward to every Beauty Uniform and this was great, Kim! Also, the movie ‘About Time’ is my friendship litmus test. You like it then I know we’re going to vibe :)

    • SP says...

SAME! people have either never heard of it or have watched it 1000x. The best. xx

    • Lily says...

Yes!! I gasped out loud when I read the words “About Time.” It’s one of my favorite movies (I’ve seen it a million times and sob every time in that scene with his dad on the beach)! My boyfriend had never heard of it before I showed it to him when we were first dating and watched each other’s favorite movies. I like you even more now, Kim!!

  80. Natalie says...

Love this! Kim, you have to try Scarr’s if you haven’t yet. I was last in NYC almost two years ago and I still think about that pizza…

  81. Layne Dettor says...

I LOVE KIM CONTENT. Kim, you are just so, so cool. Thank you for sharing, I love what you add to the COJ team.

  83. Katie says...

Love your style, Kim! Can you share where you got your K necklace from? Thanks so much.

  84. Laura says...

Pink is your color! I bet you would look amazing in the bright pink version of that Fenty lip color- I think it’s called Unlocked.

  85. Lizzie says...

This was such a delight! Thank you for sharing, Kim. I love your thoughts on beauty being what makes you feel powerful… <3

  86. AJ says...

Soooo good. And great photos. Loved it xx

Intermediate eyeliner level!!! We’re the same age(ish)/probably and when I read that I was like ok, Kim was able to get there, so someday I can get there too.

  88. S says...

I think Kim might have the prettiest hands I’ve ever seen!

  89. Laura J says...

You have beautiful eyes and a wonderful smile Kim! Thank you for sharing your philosophies! I envy your bold looks.

  90. Lacy says...

Loved every bit of this. Thank you!

  91. Willow says...

Loved this. Authentic, warm, funny and beautiful. I hope you get to Europe before too long -there’ll be many CoJ readers keen to show you around!

  92. Elissa says...

This was such a great beauty uniform, Kim! And I just want to add that I, too, saw that same nail image! Unfortunately, it didn’t translate as beautifully to my beyond pasty white skin ;) I am so jealous of it working for you :)

  93. hali says...

We watched Rear Window a few months ago and is it not the most incredible Quarantine movie?! I still find myself thinking of how it captured suspense from one single room so well.
Copying you on nails. I’d say I’d credit you if I ever get compliments but nobody sees me these days so I’ll just think of you when I look down at my keyboard and see them typing away together. Red and pink! All red or all pink usually feels a bit too much for me but together in blocks looks so smart!

I have such a friend crush on you all the way from smokey California!!

  94. Elizabeth Scott says...

Loved this, thank you for sharing Kim!
The part about feeling powerful really resonates.
Also laughed out loud both with the Gap Kris Jenner hair photo shoot and when I read that you reached “intermediate level” of eyeliner application, LOL, I’m definitely pre-beginner!

  95. Clare says...

    Thanks for sharing!

  96. Emily Crowder says...

Having your boyfriend cut your hair with clippers sounds SO ROMANTIC to me, I’m this close to trading in a french bob for a buzzcut. *swoooon*

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      I agree, so romantic!

    • Katie says...

I sport a pixie that I’d get cut and colored religiously every six weeks pre-pandemic. 8 or 9 weeks in, I was ready for the husband to it shave off. When I was finally able to see my stylist again, I was her first appointment after reopen, she laughed in good nature at my almost mullet.

  97. Maggie says...

I love “find what makes you feel powerful.” Different for everyone, and as you say, can be different every day, but it’s such a great thing to aspire to. Thanks for that!

  98. Agnès says...

I love what you write about feeling powerful; I had never thought of it that way but it makes so much sense. I think sometimes about when your boyfriend shaved your head, that was amazing. You’re such a good writer, that’s the best beauty secret I’m sure. And also, the pink hair. Thanks Kim!

  99. Tara says...

LOLS Kris Jenner Hair. it was SERVED.

you are glowing and dam your hair looks great!

  100. AC says...

What polishes are the red and pink nails? I love them!

    • Kim Rhodes says...

Thanks, AC! I think the red is Cajun Shrimp by OPI and the pink I’m not sure of, either but it’s something close to Mod About You by OPI. Hope this helps! xoxo

  101. Amy says...

Three cheers for Kim, thanks for sharing! xo

  102. liz says...

Love this. Kim seems like she’d be a great friend and is a cool + strong person. Thanks for sharing!

  103. Debbie says...

Kim – I have loved hearing your voice and reading your words here and it’s such a lovely surprise to see you featured on this beauty uniform!

Your words that “right now I feel powerful, and that in itself carries its own weight of beauty” really resonates with me. You are beautiful inside and out!

  104. Lauren says...

Kim seems like a lot of fun and I echo the other commenter who said any hairstyle looks good on her – I’m very envious of this! And the last photo, with the candle, is gorgeous.

  105. Tara says...

Kim–you are just lovely! I can FEEL your smile!

  106. Becky says...

Now I want to chop my hair off and bleach the hell out of it!!

  107. Michelle C says...

Omg Kris Jenner! I can’t stop laughing. 🤣😂🤣😂 Also, white girl here LOVING that dark red lipstick on you. ❤️😘 I moved from Kansas almost 20 years to the East Coast (first Philly, then NYC, & now DC) and I feel your joy being in a place where we can all be ourselves b/c everybody else is just trying to survive. Ha! Great read for a soggy day. Thank you!

  108. Jess says...

I love Kim even more now!

and I’m borrowing the nail idea too :)

  109. Kelsey S. says...

YES I was so hoping for one of these for Kim!!

P.S. the apple orchard pic and the moody candlelight pic are goals.

  110. Heather says...

This was so great! Love the idea of associating beauty with power in that sense – I’ve come to realize this much more with age.

  111. Casey says...

Stunning in so many ways. Thank you for sharing your BU!

  112. Sarah says...

    Love Kim!

  113. C says...

Every hairstyle she has had looks so amazing on her!! Thanks for sharing, Kim. :)

    • liz says...

      agree!

  114. Megan Lec says...

“right now I feel powerful, and that in itself carries its own weight of beauty.” 35 weeks pregnant and feeling a little bit trapped in my body at the moment but this quote brought tears to my eyes. Love this feature and the reminder that strong and powerful is beautiful.

    • ACS says...

I was blown away by that sentence too!! Thanks Kim, I’m going to file that one away.

    • Hannah says...

I just had baby #2 and so relate to that feeling of being trapped by your body. But your body IS powerful right now & tremendously strong. Three cheers for you, mama! You’re carrying that babe beautifully.

    • Abesha1 says...

When I was approaching 42 weeks pregnant and just SO tired of it, my midwife said, don’t worry… no one stays pregnant forever! Hahaha

  115. Jen says...

Kim, you are beautiful. Inside and out.

  116. Beth says...

Yay Kim! Love seeing the BTS on the COJ crew! Are you wearing Uncensored by Fenty in the cardigan pic? Gorgeous all around. Also copying that red/pink mani move <3

    • S says...

I agree the pic looks fantastic! Piling on to ask where that awesome cardigan is from.

    • Kim Rhodes says...

Thank you so much, S! It’s from Urban Outfitters!

  117. Alyson Brown says...

So beautiful, one of my favourites! Kim, where did you get your fab glasses?:)

    • Kim Rhodes says...

Hi, Alyson! Thank you so much! They’re the Basquiat frames from EyeBuyDirect! xoxo

  118. Danielle says...

Yes, yes, yes – love this post! Especially the pink braids, Kris Jenner hair, and that manicure! Cup of Jo posts for the win, as always <3

  119. Jess. says...

This made my whole heart smile. I want to be friends with Kim. Usually, I just really like the people featured and I’m happy they’re beautiful and happy. BUT I got a pang of jealousy when I saw her gorgeous hands/nails/rings, because my sad frumpy hands WISH they were that cool. Alas, as Kim has traveled Europe in her past lives, I hope to have beautiful hands and a rad signature manicure in a future life.

  120. Alison says...

About Time is my romantic guilty pleasure movie. No one ever talks about it but it’s SO good!

  121. Kat says...

She’s so great. And from Oklahoma! We are so proud. (also where is that colorblock sweater from?)

    • Carly says...

I was just coming here to ask the same thing! All of Kim’s outfits are so cute, but that sweater had me like 😍😍😍

    • Kim Rhodes says...

Thank you so much, Kat! It’s from Urban Outfitters. xoxo

  122. Jess Mill says...

I need to know that pink nail polish colour, it looks so good on you!

  123. Azuresong says...

I love what she said about being able to wear whatever she likes in Brooklyn! Yesterday, I wore a red floral blouse to my Zoom meeting and someone said, “Whoa! So bright today!” Ugh, no wonder most of my wardrobe is gray and navy.

    • Lora says...

hahaha This is actually hilarious. You need to find a neon shirt and then a sequined shirt and then one of those shiny, iridescent shirts from the 80s. Just ramp up the brightness each day. Someone is gonna be so thrown!!

  124. Daniela says...

I love Kim! Love this and now am off to get an exfoliating cleanser. Home tour next..? :)

  125. Lucy says...

Kim, you are gorgeous! Would you mind sharing where you got your rings? Love them.

    • Kim Rhodes says...

Thank you so much, Lucy! Two are from Etsy and the square/offset gem one is from Bing Bang NYC. xoxo

    • Lauren says...

Kim, love your rings! They are the perfect complement to that totally enviable manicure (really tempted to borrow your color blocking approach so I have something to smile at as I peer down on my keyboard, messy DIY manicure be damned)

Question though — how durable are they? I want to buy rings that I can just leave on day in & day out, “set it and forget it”. All the rings I’ve bought lose their gold tone pretty quickly, leave, icky green rings etc (same q for the necklaces you sport… looks like mejuri? Is it durable?)

  126. J says...

Love this! Kim, you’re an inspiration! Off to brainstorm bold haircuts…

  127. AC says...

Wooow yes. Gorgeous and wise. I am going to try the red/pink nails. So cute and something cheerful to look at… even if it’s just sitting at home :)

  128. Audrey H Elkus says...

I love everything about this, Kim!! Can you share where your beautiful colorblock cardigan is from?

    • Kim Rhodes says...

Thanks, Audrey! It’s from Urban Outfitters. xoxo

  129. Jenny Rosenstrach says...

The best. Beautiful inside and out Kim! <3 <3

    • Kim Rhodes says...

      Thanks, Jenny!! <3 <3

  130. Marty says...

Checking to see if i have pink and red nail polish right after I finish typing this….such a great idea!

  131. Anne says...

“My relationship with my body has drastically changed in the past few years as I’ve discovered what I’m capable of mentally and physically.”

Love this!! I wish the whole world thought this way.

  132. AMK says...

Love love love!! And I’m obsessed with the black sheer polka dot blouse. Can you please share the link?

    • Kim Rhodes says...

      Hi, AMK!
It’s got it from H&M last winter, but here’s a similar one! xoxo

    • AMK says...

      Thank you so much, Kim!!!

  133. Calla says...

thanks for sharing Kim! I LOVE your short bleached hair! And that incredible colorblock sweater!
