What’s Your Dream Movie House?

Dream Movie Houses

Last week, I stumbled across my dream house…

Dream Movie Houses

Have you seen the movie Knives Out? I just watched it (late to the party, I know) and really enjoyed it. It has an amazing cast and a compelling script, but to me, the real star was the epic home where the story takes place.

Favorite Movie Houses

If you haven’t seen it, the plot centers on aging mystery writer Harlan Thrombey — a super-successful James Patterson type — and his kooky family. Thrombey lives in a gothic mansion one character describes as “living in the middle of a game of Clue!”

Dream Movie Houses

The set was actually comprised of not one home, but three — one for the exterior, one for the interior, and a third to stand in for Harlan’s top-floor study (above), where a pivotal scene takes place. Every inch is chock full of character, with books and artifacts and crystal balls galore. (Love a good crystal ball.) Every object seems like it must be connected to a story from some epic adventure.

Dream Movie Houses

More reminiscent of a library or a museum than a typical home, it certainly wouldn’t be everyone’s cup of tea — these images alone would probably cause the most dedicated minimalists to shudder — but I wanted to move in immediately.

For me, it’s right up there with Jess and Marie’s Upper West Side brownstone in When Harry Met Sally, and all the gorgeous houses — especially the kitchens! — from Nancy Meyers films. Apparently, there’s a Knives Out sequel in the works, and I can’t wait to see what they do with the set!

Do you have any favorite movie or TV homes? (When I was a kid, I wanted to live here. Anyone else? :)

P.S. 9 couples with the best on-screen chemistry and do you have a comfort movie?

  1. Alyssa says...

  3. Vanessa Garcia says...

My favorite has always been the house From Alfred Hitchcock’s “North by Northwest” But “Knives Out” is a close second.

  4. Mary Vaccarezza says...

I still think about and would love to have that Victorian style conservatory Andie McDowell had as part of her apartment in the 1990 movie, Green Card. So cool!

  5. Hayley B says...

Is it weird that I want to live in the manor in the movie Ready Or Not? Sure it’s technically a horror movie and the characters who called it home were literally Satan worshippers, but that house! It’s got hidden passages/entrances meant for servants that runs the length and breadth of the house, a parlour, a games room dedicated to trophies and vintage weapons, a dumb waiter big enough to fit a person, manicured grounds for miles — it’s all just so Gothic and extravagant and totally appeals to my secret inner Victorian snob. That being said, I’m not sure I could ever get a good night‘a sleep knowing that there are hidden doorways everywhere and at any moment someone might pop up in my room and stealthily slit my throat and melt back into the mysterious shadowy depths of the house!

  6. I am torn between this house in knives out and the house from “dont be afraid of the dark.. The Guillermo del Toro movie

  7. Kathryn says...

  13. annie says...

i’m personally in love with otis’s + his mother’s house in sex education. (i know, not a movie. but still on-screen entertainment!) that porch… that little foyer… the open, but cozy and vintage-filled living space.. his dormer-sculpted bedroom! her amazing office!!! ugh. i am a ‘uge interiors ‘collector’ but it’s funny how sometimes i forget to notice and appreciate the interiors featured in shows/movies that aren’t styled to make you notice (a la wes anderson) but which are actual places that feel lived in. so, all, if you’ve ever watched ‘midsomer murders’ and fallen for the interiors in that show, know that you are not alone. xx!

  19. Elaine Reddy says...

I am OBSESSED with the house used in Knives Out (exterior). It’s been in same family for at least a hundred years and they own multiple houses right next to each other. They’re famous locally for their gardens. It’s insane (I’d post details but they appear to be very private).

  20. Maddie says...

Diane Keaton’s beach house in something’s gotta give!

  29. Carrie says...

The English Cottage from The Holiday.

Or basically any/all houses in Christmas movies: The Family Stone house, the Home Alone house, the National Lampoon house, and Liam Neeson’s house in Love Actually, etc.

  30. Tracy says...

When I was little, it was definitely the tree house from “Swiss Family Robinson.” As an adult, I fell in love with the house in “Call Me by Your Name.” The Italian countryside, the al fresco lunches, the beautiful interior… it’s absolute perfection!

It’s Complicated has the home id really want rn tho

  33. Samantha says...

Cameron Diaz’s house on The Holiday or the villa in Stealing Beauty. Complete opposites but I’d take either one.

  34. silly lily says...

I already posted my favorite houses. Can I add a couple of apartments?

Midge Maisel and her mother, in “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” — both had FABULOUS apartments. And since they were in the same building, Midge’s came with free babysitting!

  35. The house from the japanese Studio Gibli Cartoon ‘My Neighbour Totoro’ 🙈 Hands down! It’s magical! And the garden (oh and off course the neighbours too)

    • Yolanda says...

Christmas in Connecticut house with the could-stand -in fireplace, the huge beams, and the big eat in kitchen.

    • silly lily says...

Please check out the blog “Hooked on Houses” for more info on the “Christmas in Connecticut” house and many other TV and Big Screen houses. Really fun reading.

  47. Emily Petersen says...

The amazing house in north by Northwest! Modern dream house.

    • Amy says...

      Yes! So good.

I dream of the dads house in parent trap (the original version). Still dream about it!

To be honest, the moms house is pretty good too.

  48. Stormys says...

The house in home alone. Plus it’s in chicago (or a north suburb of chicago) where I’m from!

  49. Joanna Tsay says...

Speaking of dream library! When I was a young girl, the library that Beast shared with Beauty took my breath away, and I was absolutely sure that the largest city library all the way downtown would be exactly like it. So convinced I begged my mother to take me to this magical place for my 10th birthday, so you can imagine the letdown when I arrived to a nondescript brown and grey building with the children’s section in the windowless basement level. I still stayed for hours and checked out a stack because books are books no matter where! 😂

  50. Kat says...

The house in Practical Magic. The attic, the gated garden, the center kitchen island (perfect for midnight margaritas)!

    • Erin says...

      samee!!!

  51. Lauryn says...

The Family Stone 100%!! If the family from the movie could come too that would be a plus!

    • Jen says...

      Mine too!

  52. Kelly says...

The latest Little Women house. It makes me want to wear thick wool socks and eat scones while reading all day.

  53. Ivy says...

I mean… I’m like any white girl. The It’s Complicated house. Period. End of sentence.

But also always admired Kathleen Kelly’s apartment in You’ve Got Mail!

    • Bridget says...

Exact same answer for me! Though I live in a mid-century modern home in the middle of the woods…

    • Mona says...

The house in Out of Africa and everything Streep’s character brought to decorate from Denmark.

  54. Jillian says...

Kathleen Kelly’s apartment in You’ve Got Mail, please! And her clothes (jumpers, turtlenecks and cardigans? Swoon!) and job too, please.

Signed a children’s librarian who always asks herself “WWKKD?”

    • Tanya says...

      Yes, I agree!

  55. MK says...

I’ve always liked the beach house in To Gillian on her 37th Birthday— the screen door thwacking shut, the porch, and it’s a though you can hear the sand on the wooden floors when they walk.

  56. Susie says...

The fabulous penthouse in A Perfect Murder (with Gwyneth Paltrow and Michael Douglas) is a dream, most especially her closet. Also, the cute English cottage in The Holiday. Two of my faves. Also, from my childhood, remember the house from Webster? Secret passages? That was my DREAM!

  57. Ellen says...

I recently rewatched “Three Men and a Baby” and was reminded of how utterly amazing their bachelor pad is. A floor all to themselves, with an amazing mural in the entryway that the elevator opens into?! A room with a million TVs?! An unexplained but super cool semi-outdoor greenhouse-kitchen-party area?! I love that movie for a million reasons, but the apartment in particular was amazing.

    • Elizabeth PFB says...

Yes! I recently re-watched that, and thought the same thing!

    • Aimee B says...

Dr. Louise Banks’ (Amy Adams) house in Arrival.

  58. Charlotte says...

Otis & Jeans house in Sex Education! I would love to have breakfast (and lunch and dinner and everything in between) on that patio. And yes, I know apparently it’s an AirBnB, so maybe that dream can come true!

(I’m now only seeing lots of people want that one. Makes sense.)

  59. Alex says...

Lil’s (Naomi Watts) house in Adore (that super sexy and scandalous movie with Robin Wright). Located in a small beach cove in Australia. Perfection.

    • Laura says...

I agree! This movie was stunningly beautiful – the natural rugged scenery, the houses and Robin Wright.

  60. jen says...

When I was younger growing up it was the Father of the Bride house. In adulthood give me any Nancy Meyers house although I have a particular love for the It’s Complicated house. Oh wait, and then there’s the Intern and that house. Clearly a Nancy Meyers person here.

  61. kalin says...

Kathleen Kelly’s NYC apartment in You’ve Got Mail.
Napa Valley vineyard house in Parent Trap remake.
Italian villa in Call Me By Your Name.

I’d like all 3 of them please!

    • Tanya says...

      Kathleen Kelly, yeeees!

  62. Lemise says...

Mine is from a TV show rather than a movie. It was an episode of Agatha Raisin, which takes place in a Cotswold village. A stone cottage overlooking the sea, it had a beautiful, vibrant garden. I want to sell everything and live there!

  63. The Carmel ranch in the original Parent Trap movie. Maybe it’s just the nostalgia of watching it a million times growing up. I always loved the flow from outdoor to indoor spaces throughout the house. Magical!

    • Sarah Brakke says...

Me too! Love the openness of that California house!

    • Susan says...

That is one house from my childhood that I’ve never forgotten!

    • Mia says...

      100%!

  64. Suzyn says...

Fabulous movie, fabulous house! Another fabulous movie/house pair: Parasite!

  65. Eva says...

The house in The Umbrella Academy is similarly spectacular.

  66. Christine says...

Madly in love with the Art Nouveau style house in 1988’s “Some Girls” with Jennifer Connelly.

Have never forgotten it, and still think of it often, after all these years.

  67. Elizabeth PFB says...

The Meet Me in St. Louis house!

    • emily says...

      Yes!

    • Amy says...

      Ooh yes!!!

  68. Konstanze says...

Repeating what many wrote before: Jean Milburn’s house in Sex education!! absolute dream
