Last week, I stumbled across my dream house…
Have you seen the movie Knives Out? I just watched it (late to the party, I know) and really enjoyed it. It has an amazing cast and a compelling script, but to me, the real star was the epic home where the story takes place.
If you haven’t seen it, the plot centers on aging mystery writer Harlan Thrombey — a super-successful James Patterson type — and his kooky family. Thrombey lives in a gothic mansion one character describes as “living in the middle of a game of Clue!”
The set was actually comprised of not one home, but three — one for the exterior, one for the interior, and a third to stand in for Harlan’s top-floor study (above), where a pivotal scene takes place. Every inch is chock full of character, with books and artifacts and crystal balls galore. (Love a good crystal ball.) Every object seems like it must be connected to a story from some epic adventure.
More reminiscent of a library or a museum than a typical home, it certainly wouldn’t be everyone’s cup of tea — these images alone would probably cause the most dedicated minimalists to shudder — but I wanted to move in immediately.
For me, it’s right up there with Jess and Marie’s Upper West Side brownstone in When Harry Met Sally, and all the gorgeous houses — especially the kitchens! — from Nancy Meyers films. Apparently, there’s a Knives Out sequel in the works, and I can’t wait to see what they do with the set!
Do you have any favorite movie or TV homes? (When I was a kid, I wanted to live here. Anyone else? :)
P.S. 9 couples with the best on-screen chemistry and do you have a comfort movie?
