Truth. By the wonderful Jessica Olien.
P.S. Nice moments and airplane thoughts.
This made me cackle. It’s so true (for me, at least)!
Yep always put on full make up before going to the salon. I don’t want to look at myself with a blank face while seeing my hair all in tin foil and sticking out everywhere!
I usually feel very conscious at the salon about my scalp as I have hair thinning and hair loss. Often I look enviously at other patron with long locks of thick hair and wonder where did I go wrong…
At my salon here in Amsterdam they color your hair while you sit at long communal tables. It’s truly a revelation — no staring at your reflection in that funhouse mirror for hours, you can type or write or read without balancing everything in your lap, have a cup of coffee resting at hand… Seriously a game changer I wish more places would adopt!
I truly thought it was just me! Everyone else looks super chic and I look like I’ve aged ten years in a single day, and I sit there the whole time thinking, “No haircut can save this situation…”
Here’s hoping everyone’s feeling beautiful, and strong, and brave in the face of all the current craziness. Sending out group hugs to all of your and your fabulous hair!
I wear glasses which I have to take off for a haircut so I guess I luck out in this department – I only see the final product!
Hahaha same here!
MEEE TOO!!! Even afterwards, I have to rush home, shower and just try to put myself together again. Which is nuts cos I have a friend who does her hair and then goes about her day. The other day she woke up at 7am, got braided and we met for lunch after. AAAAND she was using public transport so its not like she can haul around a make up bag, change of clothes or whatever (which I could, cos I drive) HOOOWWW??!!!!
So true! My friend Rachel cuts my hair at her house since she stopped working in a salon and it’s sooo much better. We just chat and I don’t see myself in the mirror til she’s all done! Then we go out for lunch and it’s one of my favorite friend dates rather than something I dread!
I feel the opposite!! i always think i look great!! sometimes when i have funny things in my hair, i stand up and tell my hairdresser its fine and i pretend to leave like that. its always funny!
stay safe!
beijinhos Jessy
I honestly thought it was just me :D
Same!!
1000 times yes yes yes it’s like did i sleep last night do i own makeup why am i like this
Yes!!!
So True! it’s the worst ;) I sometimes don’t go just because i don’t fell like sitting and looking at my face for 45 min! I do feel less weird reading this !!
Sooooooooooo true!!! And then I look at the other women and I think they all look fantastic, I really thought I was absolutely the only person on earth thinking this!!
Absolute truth. And as we know from fleabag – hair is everything
Ahahah I always look in the Morris and see Spock looking back at me. The Vulcan ? not the doctor.. it feels kind of terrible but also funny. Maybe this Halloween I’ll give it a go…
Morris/mirror
Hahaha so true!
Haha! This is SO TRUE. Why, though?? I don’t get it. Doesn’t help that I’m already feeling vulnerable and nervous. It seems that with every haircut I lose my ability to explain anything in a remotely comprehensible manner and end-up with something I didn’t think I asked for. . .
This and selfies. Yikes.
Thank you for this! I desperately needed a laugh. I just left Trader Joe’s. Things are getting INTENSE out there. Take care of yourselves (and each other ;)!
<3 <3 <3
That experience is a true “Before & After” and it’s ever so gratifying. Just gotta make it through the “before”….that’s the harrowing part ;)
My exact thoughts ?
Between salon lighting and the lifeless pallor that comes from sitting very still, I always shuddered to look at the reflection while at a hair appointment. That’s why, for the last few years, I’ve made sure to wear a full face of makeup (which is rare for me) when I go to get my hair cut. I’m much less likely to be spooked by my own reflection, and therefore much more likely to be happy with the haircut—a struggle on its own!
I do the same thing!
Seriously! Salon lighting somehow always makes me look like I haven’t slept in 5 years!
At my last appointment, I wore makeup. I looked like a million bucks. This was an isolated incident, because I’ve worn makeup before, and still looked like a troll.
ha! thanks CoJ, I came here for a little pick me up and I got it.
I’ve always felt this way too – I blame that damn cape they always put on.
But then after? WOW- my hair will never look so good. Literally… never. I will NEVER be able to style it like my hair stylist does. NEVER EVER EVER.
Hilarious! This is spot on!!!
You absolutely MUST wear bold lipstick when you sit in one of those chairs. Related, my mom swears by looking your best whenever you expect to use a dressing room.
that’s a great tip!
Yes! I read this somewhere else. Nina Garcia from Project Runway wrote that we should wear something that will display our sense of style to the stylist to give them a better idea of who we are. Makeup would complete the package.
Although Milly didn't recognize me, she told me it was "marvelous" to be together. And that was more than enough.
Toby has a three-step approach to deepening friendships, and it works.
