So funny! It’s like I’m put on the spot: “look interested, look interested, remember what she’s saying, yuck I’d never eat that… don’t let it show, don’t let it show!!” then I tell them I can’t have dairy or soy and what might they have that doesn’t have those (which is rarely the specials…).
I’m vegetarian and try and eat vegan as much as possible so I can never order the special either (they are just never vegetarian. Why!?!), and my brain just automatically translates whatever the server is saying into “blah blah blah”, even when I try to listen politely. It’s so rude! Ugh. And I’m sure it shows on my face, because my face hides nothing.
I try, then i want the first special and can’t remember it and am embarrassed to ask the server to repeat it.
This is so funny! I didn’t know people don’t listen to the specials. I almost always order the specials!
It’s so hard to concentrate on the specials when really, the first word was “steak” or “octopus” and I don’t eat either of those. And then I wonder if my smile changes. If my whole face changes. Now I’ve disappointed you because you said the special was really good and I don’t eat that. and I really want a drink now, and I’m supposed to ask you for my drink. And can you just take my drink order?
Well, sure, they tell you the soup of the day and the offering, and then you decide it’s too expensive :)
Ha. This reminds me of that time my co-workers and I went for lunch at Maggiano’s. The server asked if we’d been there before (we had and if we hadn’t, we would have said we had) and then launched into the specials for what felt like a good five minutes, during which time we all kind of looked around at one another. When she was done and said she’d give us a moment to think it all over, we told her we were ready to order, and every one of us got the standard lunch combo.

“something something something CHEESE something something”
Hahahaha
Why is it so hard to concentrate when they’re telling the specials?!
