A Week of Outfits: Hana Asbrink

Hana Asbrink is the executive editor at Chowhound (formerly at Food52), who lives in New York City with her husband and five-year-old daughter, Lana. “I love a puff sleeve or ruffle,” she says. “Most of my clothes are pretty straightforward, so a detail helps make them feel playful.” Here, she shares five looks she wore in a week, plus her favorite Korean bbq spot…

Top: Zara, similar. Jeans: Madewell, similar. Necklace: Lola James. Bracelet: made by Lana at school. Socks: Evei.

“When my five-year-old daughter comments on my clothes, it makes my day. But it’s never something obviously beautiful. She likes my cat socks. My necklace says ‘Lana.’ It’s micro and all lowercase. I bought it for myself when she was born. No matter what I’m wearing, I always have it on.”

Trench coat: Isabel Marant, similar. Sweater: Banana Republic, similar. Pants: J.Crew, similar. Flats: Everlane. Necklace: Orchard Jewelry. Tote: Mansur Gavriel, similar.

“Navy is my favorite color to wear. It’s a nice break from New York black, and going monochrome is a lesson my mom passed down. If you’re not sure, go head-to-toe in one color. I love camel, rust, maroon — they’re very chic with little-to-no effort. My mom also instilled a love of taking care of things in me — if something is ripped, mend it, don’t buy a new one. And if she liked something, she’d get multiple items of it — a lipstick, a sweater, a pair of pants. If you find something you feel comfortable in, replicate that.”

“In Korea, women often carry bags with their hands, versus over the shoulder — it makes me feel more intentional when I’m holding onto a purse. The tote I carry for work has a shoulder strap, but I hold the short handle most of the time.”

Coat: Orolay. Sweatshirt: H&M, similar. Turtleneck: Uniqlo. Jeans: Everlane. Boots: No. 6.

“I got the No. 6 clogs at a sample sale. They’re so comfortable, I’ll walk three miles to work in them. Then I’ll do a Mr. Rogers switch at the office into fancier flats. I swear by flats and haven’t worn heels in forever. When I was six, my mom got me a pair of black patent Mary Janes, and I loved those shoes so much. Since we’re Korean, we don’t wear shoes in the house, but I’d wear them all over and it would drive her insane.”

“I first learned about this coat on New York Magazine, when they reported that everyone on the Upper East Side was wearing it. There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t see a woman or two on the street wearing it; the other day I sat next to a girl on the subway wearing it and we chatted. It’s funny that something as silly as a coat can bring people together. It’s fun being part of a zeitgeisty New York fashion moment.”

Cardigan: Ulla Johnson. Tank: H&M. Jeans: Frame. Flats: Repetto.

“I’m constantly inspired by street style. On the weekends, it’s like a parade — one of my favorite things when the weather gets warmer is to sit outside at a restaurant and watch people go by. We go to Pasquale Jones for pizza and pasta. Samwon Garden has great Korean bbq for groups, and Turntable Chicken Jazz serves delicious Korean fried chicken and beer. We love Blue Ribbon Izakaya because it’s so family friendly. Lana eats salmon avocado rolls, but her favorite food is miso soup and rice. She’s the cheapest date. We bring kid chopsticks that connect at the top.”

Dress: Ganni. Boots: No. 6. Necklace: Orchard Jewelry. Tights: J.Crew.

“Ganni is very comfortable — I love long dresses in the summer. They’re so impactful, but you’ve just thrown something on over your head. And this necklace is a green bean. Well, a gold bean! It’s abstract, so people don’t immediately think I’m wearing a vegetable. It’s a conversation starter.”
