When my partner and I decided to move out of New York and be expat/nomads for a few years (or more) I knew I would be homesick, but I had no idea how hard it would be for me not having a static home of my own. I love traveling, and I don’t easily form attachments to objects, so this surprised me. But as much as I loved our new life, I also felt like I was an intruder in somebody else’s. The longest we are in an apartment is 6 months, which sounds long, but feels like a second. So, I’ve come up with similar ways to make new places feel like home – now I always display one of my Grandmother’s hand-painted birthday cards to me, and having my pile of books on the bedside table helps too.
My family moved a whopping 18 times by the time I left for college. My dad is a builder and sometimes we would just move three doors down, but it was always a (not always welcomed) adjustment.
After years thinking about it for years, I finally came up with a list of three things that must take place before somewhere goes from House to Home.
1. One must survive some sort of illness. It’s incredible what bonding takes place with your ceiling when you’re forced to stay in bed, at first staring blankly at it, and then eventually talking to it.
2. One must cry. I know– another kind of bummer one. But crying in a new home (though sometimes spurred on by the new home itself) does something in your brain that triggers you to react instinctively. Whether it’s heading for the kitchen to make a comforting meal or sitting on the couch and staring at the way the light hits the walls or taking a long walk in your new neighborhood once you’ve pulled it together a little bit.
3. Finally, one must throw a dinner party. Because duh. Housewarming gifts. Laughter filling the space. Realizing that the oven runs way too hot and you’ve burned your roasted potatoes. Instant memories made.
And yes. After complaining about moving for my entire childhood and swearing that I would never move, not once, ever, ever again, I find myself craving the smell of cardboard boxes and new carpet. Isn’t life funny?
Baking cookies or bread will work, surely! Cuuuuute illustrations!
Moved into my first non-student house last year (however still with roommates) and all of our guests always comment on how our place felt so homey. I’ve always attributed it to our giant bookshelf in the living room filled with all of our books. With 3 roommates it feels like our own little library and everyone loves to guess which books belong to who.
I smiled all the way through this list, agreeing that these are all wonderful ways to make a house feel like a home (plus I LOVE baking cookies!), but that last one got me ? I try to clean out the fridge once a week and there’s always some mystery container hiding somewhere, waiting to see if I’m brave enough to open it! Haha.
Lol the mystery food in the fridge!!!
Potted plants! It will surely feel like home when I have those as my Mom loves those we have lots at home. And we dont use those beautiful pots but used cans of powdered milk or paint pots!
I laughed so hard at the shampoo one! Many years later, I still remember a guy friend in college looking at my shower and saying “HOW can you possibly use all those?” . And I thought, “I just do, buddy.”
I also recommend saving sweet cards from loved ones and putting them on dining room tables and kitchen counters. It’s such a neat reminder of all the love we hold in our homes even if we live there on our own. Salt lamps glow joyfully too in new spaces.

So on point!
I’ve moved more times in the last 4 years than I had in the previous 27, and I always make the same first dinner, roast chicken. It started because I wanted to get a feel for the oven, then continued because nothing smells like home to me quite like a roast chicken. Also, easy and hands off so I can pretend I’m unpacking clothes while I’m really search for the corkscrew.
I like to think it’s what Ina would do, and she’s a good barometer for hominess.
Ahh, this is so poignant for me right now. I recently moved back into my apartment after another unit burned. I had water damage that needed repair. I’m SUPER lucky in the whole situation but I’m still having a hard time getting the homey feeling back even though everything is all fresh and newly renovated.
my friend gemma says people are like cats — you have to find your favorite corners and take naps all around the house until it feels like home :) i hope you feel good and settled soon xoxoxo
I love the sound of the dryer. Sounds like home to me.
The shampoo thing is totally right.
love this! i’d add “light candles,” too. :)

Would she mind if I share the image as long as she is credited? I love this so much!
i think that would be fine! her instagram handle is @coupdegracefarris and we commissioned this illustration for @cupofjo
thank you! xo
This is great! I’d add the following: pile shoes by the front door, randomly place stickly notes with important phone numbers inside the doors of kitchen cabinets, and place almost-dead potted plant in a corner.
I LOVE this! Now following her on Instagram!
These are lovely :)
Also making a place feel like home is by sharing special secrets with it..like that odd closet door that closes only if you give a slight push in a certain angel ..
Happy weekend you all!
I would also add – fill it with the people you love!
