Nineties Anxiety appreciates the decade that has changed style for-ev-er. Still not over the faded jeans, the considered layers and Brad and Gwyneth flirting in tiny sunglasses.

Reading The Pictures is dedicated to the analysis of news and media photos, taking the phrase, ‘a picture is worth a thousand words’ to fascinating new heights. For example, the bottom right-hand photo shows three NYPD officers at the scene after the terror attack in a NYC bike lane. “The one in the center is wearing police headwear, the kind approved for Sikh officers in place of traditional turbans. What makes the image exceptional is how routine it is,” writes Michael Shaw. “In the current climate, the photo is an example, and an act of solidarity, at the same time these men are just doing their jobs.”

Self-proclaimed “doodler on the roof” Jeffrey D. Phillips has an awesome series of letters of the Modern day English alphabet. Grateful for the acknowledgment of the happy (and necessary) occurrence that is the ‘backup lunch.’

Dogs In Food is the account you never knew you needed with adorable pup heads edited very casually into different snacks. Because, it is Instagram, after all.

    I’m really into inspiring accounts: I like @tifforellie , @alexisteichmiller , and @brunchspeak ! And of course @cupofjo ?

    • Jessica says...

      God that’s depressing!

    • Laura says...

Wait…maybe I’m missing something. I’m guessing the point is to draw attention to the inequality of females and males on news covers, but why does “no males” seem to equate “females present”? I’m not sure how the presence of males is the same as the absence of females.

  2. Andrea says...

    @mothersbefore
Pictures children have submitted of their mothers before they were mothers. I’ve been following the posts for a few months and they just did a segment on the Today show for Mother’s Day.

  3. Christine says...

  7. Heather says...

Dogs in food is srsly unsettling.

  11. Alice says...

I think EVERYONE needs to go back and read Jack’s Diary from the very beginning: @jacks_diary2018. It was the best, most hilarious ride, and I would be maniacally checking every day around lunchtime for the next installment. Appaaarently “he” might be coming back for more soon, which would probably make my year.

  12. Laura C. says...

    Nineties Anxiety, oh my God

  13. I love @kmsalvagedesign. Its so orderly and I live in an unorderly world.

  15. I run two Instagrams for my two etsy stores (@ramblingsketcher and @woodwardandfather), so I spend a lot of time on Instagram! I like following other artists and etsy stores and small businesses. @caycezavagliastudio, @lisacongdon, and @sophieklerk are my current favorites!

  16. Sara Tall says...

That could be a current picture of Julia Roberts and she’d fit right in. That look is ageless! Also, those dog photos are so very close to being disturbing. I can’t do it. ;D

  17. Liz says...

I am loving Linda V Wright’s instagram account. An American woman that has lived in Paris some 40 years. She’s incredibly chic and proudly wears her age.

  18. Courtney says...

My sister founded a candle and skin care company in Detroit and has a *gorgeous* Instagram account: @thedetroitrose

I am an immigration attorney and operate out of her studio (sister bosses!) so I get to witness the behind-the-scenes creative direction and photo shoots. Everyone I know follows her and is obsessed.

  19. Love all these feeds, just followed a couple!

    xx,
    Daeyz

  20. Jane says...

I got off Facebook 5 years ago after the birth of our daughter. Never looked back and haven’t missed it. And right before Christmas, I removed social media and email from my phone. Now if I want to look at Instagram, I can scroll on my computer but forget most days. And I don’t need to constantly check my email when I’m away from my desk. It’s been so liberating!

    • Em says...

I got off of Facebook in 2010 and it was the best decision I ever made. I’m thinking of getting off of Instagram even though I don’t check it that often. It’s just that people are so mean on social media. I used to think the world of… the rest of the world, haha. But social media just makes me feel less about the whole human race. There’s more pettiness than prettiness when people can hide behind their screens. :-/

  21. @celestebarber! She’s hilarious!!

    • Shannon says...

      2nd

    • june says...

Agree, especially the Ricky Martin dance by the pool. I’ve probably watched that one twenty times and still LOL. Hot husband ain’t too hard to look at either.

  22. Omg the dogs in food! I’m dying.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

hahahaha i was laughing so much when stella busted that one out.

  23. Kim says...

    Might I recommend @gelcream?

Extra bonus points for the drama with Jen Atkin!

    • Kim says...

Bullying, not drama, I should say.
Otherwise, I really enjoy @gelcream’s compositions and her product recommendations that aren’t sponser related.

  24. Kristy says...

I JUST noticed that some of your posts don’t have bylines. May I ask the reason? It might be tiny but I still like to know who worked on which posts, even if it’s just a round up, even if the byline was simply, “Team.”

    • Anna says...

Agreed! I love knowing whose thinking is behind each post — even if its a collaboration!

    • Stella Blackmon says...

Hi Kristy, thank you so much for writing! This feedback is really helpful. Often, when we do a post without a byline, it’s because it’s a team effort and coming from all of us :)

    • KSM says...

Absolutely unnecessary! Not needed at all. This brings me to a very important change that I have witnessed in the work place with the current generation. In a company/org/blog, almost everything that comes out is a culmination of ideas. People and youngsters should be encouraged to just contribute and be part of an output and a product. While internal acknowledgement is necessary, not everything can be credited to one or few people. This credit hogging and name acknowledgement for everything, craze, has changed work ethic in a strange way. There were always some people who were like this but it seems now almost an entire generation has this bug.
That said, I understand this is a blog and things are little different when you are individually writing a post. But then it is about ideas too so breaking down to who said what and who added what and who finally wrote it can be tricky. It is my humble request to the team, pls don’t give in on this request. We are smart enough to understand that it was team effort and that team could mean anyone could have come up with any line or any part of an idea or one out of 5 may not be involved. Just don’t spoon feed everything.

  25. Julie says...

Thanks for these great recs! I have recently loved:
@wellreadblackgirl for book recommendations and thoughtful quotes
    @marte_marie_forsberg for gorgeous, moody photography
@theconsciouskid for diversity resources in children’s literature
and of course…@bymarianandrew for kindred spirit illustration!

  26. Zoe says...

While STVDIO’s IG images certainly are pretty what they’re actually doing is stealing other photographers’ images for their own marketing. These images were most likely shot for a magazine or another editorial where the photographer was paid for that specific shoot. Since no credit is given for any of the images, I’d assume that the photographer was not consulted for permission for usage. Some of the art images are most likely old enough to be used in that way, but anything else….nope. The internet is pretty bad with this sort of stuff and people think it is ok to do. It’s not. ESPECIALLY when it is a brand using someone else’s images for their own marketing. Personal inspiration images are one thing but companies should know better.

  27. Megan says...

Lucy Knisley! A favorite author/cartoonist with especially poignant vignettes on parenting (her toddle is adoooorable too). Can’t wait for her new book. And Somewhere Magazine for dreamy photos of different places around the globe.

    • Lily says...

      Love her.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

i love her, too! i loved her book French Milk.

  28. Kaysie says...

Inspired by Caroline, I’d like to create a series called “Haikus for First Time Mothers” with gems like:

    Is it chocolate?
Or is it poop? Take a sniff.
    Never taste. Never!

    My God I’m tired
My mother did this three times
    How did she do it?

    Bed. Now. Go to sleep!
    “Mommy, one more story, please?”
    Gets me every time.

    It is possible
To be a good mom and wife?
    I’m one. Never both.

    • DM says...

You are a genius. Please start this account.

    • Lisa says...

      These are amazing!

    • Lauren says...

      LOVE. YOU do it.

    • Jane says...

that last one in particular. oof. every single day.

    • t says...

i once tasted. big, big mistake.

    • Ashley W says...

These are so good. I don’t really follow “textagram” accounts, but I’d follow this one for sure!

    • Maria says...

These are so real! Please do it!

  29. Gia says...

Brad and Gwen or Brad and Gwyneth?

  30. Lisa says...

Gary Janetti. He has this fake account for Prince George, if he was a Machiavellian toddler who disliked Meghan. It’s hilarious

    • Sylvia says...

I just saw it a few days ago. At first I thought it was hilarious too. But then.. I don’t know, felt bad for George who will grow up and eventually recognizes that people made fun of him based on his expression very early on. I do think it’s very poingnant, tho.

  31. Kate says...

I’m very into that Dogs in Food insta, it makes me LOL every single time. Interesting, though… I shared one to our dog-lovers channel on Slack at work and a couple people failed to see the humor and actually took offense saying “Dogs are friends, not food”. Lighten up people, it’s funny!

  32. Brooke says...

    These are great!

    However

Last month I deleted instagram from my phone and it has been so so nice not to find myself mindlessly scrolling for huge blocks of time. I’ve read a lot more ebooks! And had a lot less life comparison guilt.

    • Kaysie says...

I did the same thing 2 months ago! Deleted Facebook as well. NO REGRETS! So refreshing.

    • Denise says...

Me too! I’m off the instagram for about a month and what a difference it’s made.

    • amy says...

I really need to get off social media but I’m so afraid I am going to

“miss” something. It’s such a waste of time and I’m constantly comparing myself (and my kids!) to others. Not healthy :-“(

  33. aga says...

Love Monica’s mules in that Friends shot! “Considered layers” is a perfect description of the style happening there.
