I have a names list in my phone too… for band names! I’ve never had a band, and don’t expect to have one, but I have lots of good possible names. :) It comes up a lot because my fella is a podcaster – his show is about D.C. music. Hometownsoundsdc.com
I have a names list too!
When I come home in the evening I always say “hello” to my house and the picture of Christ I got through the door and can’t bear to throw away. Not only do I say “hello”…………………..I SAY IT IN FRENCH!!!!
Always talk to inanimate objects. Got caught sweet talking the printer today at work. :)
I have had a “names I like” list on my phone forever! I have three kids, didn’t use any of the names,* and I still contribute to the list even though I’m not having any more children.
*It turns out if you have kids with another person they have to like the names too.
I’m 21 years old, very single, and my biggest fear is that my future husband won’t like any of my names!
So glad I’m not the only one who keeps a running list of good nail polish colors!
Number two cracked me up…. I sometimes thank my shoes after a good run.
Just FYI, the best season of Naked + Afraid was definitely season 4. I’ve never seen people more naked or more afraid.
hahahah this comment made me actually laugh out loud
Bahahahaha! Ditto.
We just signed up for hulu as well and Real Housewives of BH is my go to show. The world is too heavy at times, reality TV is a good escape.
I have a names list too, and I even used the notes app to add columns and I have them separated by gender of course but also by first and middle names. I can really do up a list.
…will probably end up the names for future dogs since who knows if i’ll ever have children.
one of my columns is for dogs…
(This is in response to Carrie’s commment): I’d love to see a list of dog names! I don’t have one written down but we hope to get a dog later this year and I’m regularly trying to come up with names. Maybe names for pets (your current pet or future or past pet) would be a good topic for a post? I actually googled this recently and found Max and Bella to be the top dog names last year—and I have friends who have two kids with exactly those names. I think it’s worth discussing whether it’s good or not good to give pets people names. Personally, I don’t want to name my future dog something that someone else might name their child (but I’d be ok with an old fashioned name I would not expect to find in current use for human babies). How do others feel about that issue? Also, I think (a lot!) about nicknames for my future dog. Is that weird? I should probably be embarrassed by how much thought I devote to it, but somehow I’m not. (Plenty of other things embarrass me, so I’m certainly not saying I don’t have any weird habits! I definitely talk to myself out loud sometimes, for example…)
I personally see nothing wrong with human names for animals, or in giving a child a name inspired by an animal! I mean, plenty of kids are named after celebrities or cities, so even if you tried to give an animal a non-person name, you’d probably find a baby with that name eventually. If there’s a name you love and wouldn’t mind saying every day, use it! There’s nothing more distinguished than a cat named Fred, or as hilarious as a dog named Sharon. “Sharon, sit!” “Michelle, want a treat?” The rules for naming an animal are basically the same as for naming a baby – are you comfortable yelling it (sternly, if necessary) across the playground/dog park?
A fun alternative is giving the animal a name of a completely different animal. Monkey and Moose are great dog names!
I have lists of kid and dog names too- they’re separate lists! Our greatly loved 9 year old Golden Retriever died in March and we’re planning on getting another dog as soon as we can. Our three boys have their top pick for a name – Polkadot aka Dot.
Funny, I have a list of child and dog names. But both my daughters and my dog were named only after I saw their faces. I’m pretty fast at saying: “Humm, you look like a Leonard (dog)” and then I cannot call them anything else :)
In response to Wendell: I have a very common dog’s name. People have been telling me, “Oh, that’s my dog’s name!” after I introduce myself for my entire life. It’s a bit annoying, but, in the end, there’s going to be crossover, and hey, I assume it means they like the name!
I imagine this is also a problem for women named Molly, Chloe, or Trixie. I think more people should name their dogs Jennifer or Amanda. Spread it around!
currently putting myself in the data scene. EEEEK! so “put myself out there” hits home. So embarrassing. #butineedaman
So glad I’m not the only one who keeps a list of names I like!
I find myself saying “thank you” to inanimate objects frequently. Thank you to the copier, thank you to the car, thank you to the kettle…I started doing this out of the blue like 18 months ago and I have no clue why. I’m always surprised when I hear myself saying it (“wait, why did I say that? and out loud?”) so it also makes it so that I completely charm and amuse myself.
Mari Kondo got me started on thanking my stuff! I thank my car daily. I thank clothes that I donate. I love it and I feel like it makes me appreciate them more.
I have been a secretary for years. I am convinced that if you don’t talk to the copier, it will turn on you. It demands respect!
I definitely relate to most of these, but the one about paying to watch reality tv cracked me up! I recently subscribed to Hulu just so I could watch The Real Housewives :)
