Do I Smell Funny? (For Real This Time)

Can Natural Deodorant Stand Up to a Half Marathon?

Natural deodorant and I have a long and storied past. As with a lover who has scorned me time and again, I’ve often crept back to natural deodorant, usually to get burned. But recent years have brought many breakthroughs, for both deodorant and me…

On a personal front, the last few years have ushered in a newfound love for extreme fitness — running long distances, kickboxing, hopping on and off boxes like a deranged goat. I became a certified yoga instructor. I lifted heavy objects. Through all this, I grew stronger. Perhaps, I thought, with a naiveté falling squarely between ridiculous and touching, natural deodorant had grown stronger, too.

And so, in search of an answer, I wore these aluminum/sulfate/paraben/phalate-free formulas throughout my days. Here’s what happened:

1. Violets Are Blue Roll-On Deodorant
The lemongrass-and-tea-tree-oil scent made me feel like microscopic people set up two little spas in my armpits. Their tiny spas smelled so nice, until the end of the workday, when they started to smell more like a locker room, and I’d need to reapply. Still, this formula has surprising staying power. The roll-on liquid goes on wet, but dries quickly enough. Added bonus: It smooths and softens sensitive underarm skin.
Rating: Four out of five stars.

2. Ursa Major No B.S. Deodorant
Sometimes, you want to smell fresh. Sometimes, you just don’t want to smell, period. So I took this unscented deodorant out for a spin — a literal spin, in a cycling class. The point of an indoor cycling class is to sweat more than you knew was humanly possible. And sweat I did. At the end of it all, I didn’t smell great, but I didn’t smell terrible! Which, trust me, is saying a lot. Bonus: This formula is baking soda free and safe for sensitive skin.
Rating: Three out of five stars.

3. Agent Nateur Holi(Stick)
This is like the natural deodorant equivalent of a supermodel. Its lovely package has graced more Instagram posts and fashion magazine spreads and best-of lists than I can count. Thus, I went in with high expectations. I wanted to love it, but each and every night, I’d awake to discover something smelled like a yak that got doused with ammonia. (I’m sorry for the specificity, but that’s exactly what it smelled like. I’ve never encountered a yak, and yet I know for sure.) As you’ve likely predicted: that something was me. We broke up soon after.
Rating: Two-ish out of five stars.

4. Malin + Goetz Eucalyptus Deodorant
Good for sensitive skin, this non-irritating formula goes on clear and lightweight — not at all tacky — so it’s perfect for those sleeveless top days when you want something discreet. Eucalyptus, hailed for its natural antibacterial and antiseptic qualities, helps keep things fresh. I wouldn’t recommend this one for, say, climbing a mountain, but I wore it on many walks with friends and it worked out just fine.
Rating: Four out of five stars.

5. Kopari Coconut Oil Deodorant
I did not expect to like this one. Coconut oil has been acting like a natural ingredient superhero for a long time now, and it’s kind of like, enough already. But then I started wearing this and was shocked by how well it worked. So I wore it to move around. A lot. Very swiftly. For an entire half marathon. TAKE THAT, COCONUT! I thought, running across the Manhattan Bridge. LET’S SEE HOW WELL YOU DO NOW. I crossed the finish line smelling no worse than one would after a mildly stressful trip to the grocery store. Touché, coconut. Touché.
Rating: All of the stars in the sky. Or four-and-a-half of them. Same diff.

The Best Natural Deodorants

Are you on the natural deodorant bandwagon? Do you have a favorite brand? We’d love to hear…

P.S. The original deodorant challenge, and a brilliant trick for when you forget deodorant.

(This post is sponsored by Nordstrom, a store we use and love. Their beauty department is incredible, including their natural beauty selection. Plus, they always offer free shipping and returns. Thanks for supporting the brands that keep this site running.)

  1. Ti says...

Love a brand called No Pong! And love the name too! Although always open to trying other brands. So many great natural products around now.

  2. kelly lewis says...

Bought the Kopari after this review and unfortunately, after 2 weeks of applying, reapplying, hyper scrubbing in the shower in between, this deodorant is not working for me. Big bummer.

  3. Maura Diaz says...

I have tried just about every natural deo and Curie is my favorite so far. Never going back. It works the best and smells so good.

  4. molly says...

I use lavanila deodorant or soap walla sensitive skin deodorant (baking soda free) both work really well. I’ve tried Toms of Maine and it gave me a rash.

  5. Courtney says...

Thank you so much for this post! I thought that, no matter how well I ate and no matter how much I sweat, I was destined for a life of smelliness. Per your recommendation, I’ve been using Kopari for the past week, and it’s incredible! Just a slightly fresh coconut scent and no body odor smell!

  6. Vaish says...

Two words: Native Deodorant. I did not think natural deodorant worked until I tried Native. It’s amazing. the Vanilla Coconut scent is everything. *insert “person raising both hands in celebration” emoji* :P But seriously. Try Native Deodorant. I have never run a marathon in it though. That’s next level. Now I’m curious to try the Kopari roll on!

    • Lu says...

I love Native. Works great for me. Lavender and Rose is my scent.

    • Tina says...

YES!!!! Same! Native Deodorant is the best! My favorite scent is the men’s Eucalyptus Mint and I love the seasonal floral and pine scents.

    • kelly lewis says...

Ordered this morning, fingers crossed. The Kopari did not work for me.

  7. Adriana says...

I saw another reader’s comment recommending acids toners like the ones you use for your face (glycolic, lactic, etc.) make excellent deodorants. While I’m staunchly anti natural deodorants (I even commented about it on this very post) I decided to give it a try. I’ve been swiping using Pixi Glow Tonic (so glycolic acid) under my arms for a week and it works like a charm. I live in a tropical climate, don’t have AC and while I’ve definitely sweat, I don’t smell even the faintest whiff of BO! It also helps with ingrown hairs and hyper-pigmentation since its an exfoliant!!!!

  8. Liz says...

Bali Secrets!! I’ve tried the original scent, which is a bit grandma-y but seems to work better than the aloe scent I tried (and I don’t notice the scent at all once it’s dried). The ingredients make no sense. Is it that salt that keeps me from stinking? The seaweed? Who knows. All of the others with baking soda in them give me rashes, this is the only one that doesn’t

  9. Lily says...

From my personal experience, it’s not just about the deodorant. Shirts made out of synthetic fibre cause a lot of bad smell. I prefer a loose fit 100% cotton, esp when I know the day is going to be stressful.

  10. Lara says...

I tried 3 or 4 that didn’t work for me and was thinking of giving up (I do a manual job and feel very paranoid about stinking) until I tried the “pit putty” from Bubble & Bee.
    https://bubbleandbee.com/organic-deodorant/
They have sample jars so you can try the different scents and see what works with your body chemistry which I liked as I hate wasting stuff. You can get it as a stick if you don’t like using it out the jar. I got a few but it was the Jasmint scent that I loved- fresh and slightly floral. I would use the crystal rock spray at night after my shower and then put this on in the morning and I’d be good all day. Eventually I decided to find an alternative as I live in the UK so I now use the Gentle Tangerine one (no baking soda) from here: https://naturaldeoco.com/

    Hope that helps someone xx

  11. Lisa says...

Like many here, I’d tried every natural deodorant under the sun with no long term success (and so much pit irritation). This ended up being my holy grail combo (for going on 2 years now):

Uncle Harry’s rosemary/sage body deodorant spray + crystal deodorant stick.

I spritz each pit 2-3 times with the spray to moisten, then rub the crystal directly on (instead of running the crystal under the tap before applying). It not only WORKS, but actually smells great–such a relief after so many years of being self-conscious about odor on this hippy hygiene journey.

  12. jk says...

Fat and the Moon Sensitive Pit Cream. Only thing without baking soda that works for me. It is awesome.

  13. Jessi says...

I, like you , have had trouble and been burned by the natural deodorant options out there. I am a very active, very SMELLY woman. My husband refers to it as my gorilla scent. But, I have found a natural combination that my husband and I are very pleased with (for now). First — I take Body Mint morning and night. It’s a chlorophyl tablet at natural grocers or amazon.com. Second — for my pits, I like Schmidts deodorant in the charcoal magnesium stick. It rubs right in and doesn’t feel greasy like so many other formula’s I’ve tried. It’s my 5 out of 5.

  14. Adriana says...

THIS IS THE CONTENT I AM HERE FOR

  15. Kate says...

I’m so glad to have a place to talk about this! I have also had a long and storied past with natural deodorants! My quest began after my mom’s breast cancer took up residence mangled in the tissue in her armpit, prompting every oncology intern within 20 miles of any cancer treatment “Pavilion” (fucking pavilions!) to take turns groping my shirtless mother’s armpit to unsuccessfully locate the tumor from the scans. I lost my mom to that breast cancer, and my grief manifested as a deep fear that chemical-laden deodorant was to blame and would kill me too.

I’ve tried at least 10 different brands, all worked pretty well until they didn’t— usually on stressful work days leading up and during my period in which I began to STINK STINK STINK. My boyfriend began refusing to do sniff tests to confirm this. My brother told me I smelled like cured meats while I was trying the M&G version. I have not found one yet that did not inspire me to find new creative ways to describe the absolutely ridiculous odors I would experience.

I will try the Kopari one once it’s back in stock, but my drawer full of hardly-used natural deodorants may just find another friend to collect dust with.

    • Tori says...

Try Real Purity, it’s on Amazon. I get it at a local shop a bit cheaper but it’s the only thing that I’ve found that works. It goes on liquid which some people dislike but for me it’s worth it!!!

I’m so sorry about your mom.

    • Noelle says...

Sorry to hear about your mom, that is a truly awful story. I had a lot of trouble finding something that worked too (I was using Secret prescription strength for years and even that stopped working when I was stressed at work or drinking too much coffee). I decided to make it my new years resolution to stick it out though because I was getting so horrified thinking about all these harmful chemicals, so had to “detox” from my regular antiperspirant for a few weeks before the natural stuff started working. (It was a very unpleasant few weeks but I was off from work so that helped.) Then I found this brand called Bali Secrets on Amazon, their Delicate Rose works really well (I tried a different scent they make, the ingredients were different and it didn’t work as well). Pacifica Beauty also makes these great wipes you can use to refresh throughout the day in a coconutey scent- then you just reapply whatever natural deodorant after you use the wipes. I’ve been alternating the Bali with this other brand called “Underarmed.” The Underarmed is nice because its more of a waxy texture so it feels dry. Anyway, that’s my novel. Hopefully it will help you or someone else because it is very discouraging at first! Good luck!

  16. Steph says...

It isn’t for everyone, but I noticed that when I stopped shaving my armpits a few years ago, I started smelling a lot less. The skin-on-skin factor of bare pits allows more moisture to get trapped which feeds stinky bacteria. I recommend everyone try it for a month because it just might work, and if you don’t like the look, it could still be an option during the winter months when you aren’t wearing sleeveless tops anyway.

That + Toms of Maine Calendula is my routine.

  17. Lauren C. says...

My struggle with the natural deodorant conversation is that many people who sing the praises of brands like Native are people who DO NOT SWEAT.

I work out almost every day at lunch (and I have a 9to5 job), so I have to walk back into the office and not knock my coworkers out. The only thing that has every worked for me is the Crystal deodorant (which comes in a non-scented roll-on). This stuff is serious protection against BO. Of course you’re going to sweat bc all natural deodorants lack anti-perspirant, but you will NOT smell. And to be clear, I’m the person at the gym that grabs multiple towels to mop off with and still leaves little puddles on the floor (my sincerest apologies to the cleaning staff of Equinox). I’ve used this stuff for about 15 years – back when I was a teenager and arguably more smell-prone – and it has never let me down. The best part? You can buy it at any drug store and it’s cheap :)

    • Alyssa says...

Yes! Crystal for the win. I use the rock, not the roll-on, but it is seriously the only one that works (and I’ve tried many).

  18. Rachel says...

NATIVE! The absolute best brand I’ve tried (and I’ve sank at least $500 into this experiment).

  19. Annie says...

Despite the terrible packaging and branding, I’m a convert to Kiss My Face “liquid rock” deodorant in (cringe) PATCHOULI! But it actually smells great, not too hippy dippy, and I like that scent a lot better than their version of lavender.

  20. I make my own with coconut oil, shea butter, baking soda, cornstarch and tea tree oil + lavender essential oils. I pour it into a deoderent stick and keep it in the fridge during the summer as it can melt and be hard to apply plus when it becomes solid again the mixture can seperate and not be as efficient. I can sweat a lot when I’m hot / nervous etc so if I have an event or special occasion I do use an un-scented chemical filled one :) I’m just so glad I’m not wearing the harmful ones all day every day anymore!

    • naina says...

      Hi Steph,
Glad to know you are making your own deodarant. Can you share the proportions and brands of the ingredients you use. Would love to try it.

  21. Ayris says...

There are quite a few comments here so I’m not sure if this has already been mentioned but have you tried making your own deodorant. It’s so simple. The ingredients are coconut oil, baking soda, and cornstarch. Adding essential oils can be a nice touch as well. You can find a recipe online. I promise it works so well. I have been plenty embarrassed by sweat stains and stinky pits. But, homemade deodorant CHANGED MY LIFE!

    • Lisa says...

      Oooh! Great suggestion, thanks!

  22. April McNeil says...

You have to try Routine – https://www.routinecream.com/.
Like you, I have a sorted past with natural deodorants. Routine has great scents, and it works! It’s also Canadian, eh!

    ;)

    April

    • Susan says...

Another vote for Routine. Their Superstar variety is the best thing I have ever found and I feel like I have tried everything… you can get samples on their website to try it out.

  23. Zak says...

I like the smell of my sweat! Am I the only one?!

  24. SCV says...

Dr. Bronner’s lavender hand sanitizer! It’s cheap, it kills bacteria and it doesn’t create yellow staining in the arm pits of your favorite t-shirts/ blouses. But don’t use right after shaving as your pores will be open and it stings. This is good for everyday but might not hold up to super intense workouts.

  25. Carol says...

When I tried aluminium-free formulas in the past they just didn’t work at all, but I am so tired of the aluminium in antiperspirants staining my white shirts yellow. I just bought the Soft & Gentle 0% Aluminium deodorant a few weeks ago and so far so good! It was really warm in the UK this past week and it held up well.

  26. Erin says...

I have to put in a plug for this deodorant cream I bought from a woman at a North Carolina market last year. It’s the only natural deodorant that has ever worked for me, and I just found her website (https://www.washbucketsoap.com/) and stocked up! It’s got a slight patchouli scent that’s nice and won’t knock you out.

  27. Piper Wai (jar) all the way! Also, every few days I take a zinc supplement. It’s totally taken away any stink. As my mom, an integrative physician, says, “zinc cures stink.” (And also, “the only solution to pollution is dilution.” Aka. Drink more water if you have allergies lol)

  28. Julia says...

    Ethique!!
Alllll the time – that and their solid shampoo/conditioner/cleanser/moisturiser/serum/…/…
The company is based in my town in Christchurch, New Zealand, and their philosophy and product quality is incredible. Lasts for aggessss too, I’ve been using a 2cmx4cm piece of solid deodorant since last November and it is still like 1.8cmx3.8cm haha

  29. Rachel says...

I love Native as well, and even got my boyfriend to switch to that from whatever super-strong smelling drugstore brand he had been using. He loves it now, too! Their scents are delicious, and they feel so good going on. And, there’s no weird sweat/fragrance co-mingling aroma.

  30. Even sponsored posts from Caroline are awesome!! More Caroline!!

  31. Louisa says...

Has Caroline written about how she ramped up her exercising habits, which she alludes to here? It would be great to read about how she went about dedicating herself to a routine and how she stays committed to it .

    • Sophie says...

Yes!!! to this. I would love to hear more about this!

  32. Meg Q says...

    Native!! It’s the best.

  33. Jen says...

me shouting from the rooftops: “ZirYab’s Body Brew!!”
    (Love it!)

  34. I’ve tried so many. SO. MANY. Most of the decently effective ones seem to have a coconut (or some other) oil base that stain all my clothes. Ugh. I finally stumbled upon a natural spray deodorant made by Saje (I think it’s a Canadian company, but they have retail stores in the US and a website). It works as good or better at taming odor than any of the coconut oil ones I’ve tried, plus no oily/greasy stains on my clothes. Highly recommend.

  35. megan says...

Fat and the Moon deodorant cream.

  36. Cheryl says...

    I make my own deodorant.
I found the recipe on a website called Crunchy Betty. She uses baking soda, arrowroot powder, coconut oil and essential oils. It has a paste like consistensy. I use my fingers to dip in the jar, apply and rub the rest on my legs. Imade it on a whim, not expecting it to work. But it is magic. Now whenever I while up a new batch I make an additional one for someone else. I’ve converted friends, neighbors and family who make their own because I copy the recipe onto the jar’s lid.
I believe the important oils to add are tea tree and lavender for their antimicrobial powers. My friend is off her perscription deodorant thanks to this stuff. Best part is you never spend a dime on deodorant and when you run out you usually have all the ingredients handy!

    • Hayat says...

Where can I get the right amount of ingredients for this?I really want to give it a go. Do you have a link or something?

    • Anja says...

I make my own deodorant as well. I use only Baking soda, coconut oil, corn starch and a few drops of essential oil. You save a lot of money compared to buying similar deodorants, you can use whichever scent you want and it works really well.
Hayat, just take a look at youtube, there you fill findplenty of instructions. :-) It’s totally worth trying.

    • Cheryl says...

      Hayat
I went to Crunchy Betty All Roads Lead to the Pits and her recipe is

      1/4 c. baking soda
1/4 c. cornstarch or arrowroot powder
      5 Tbsp. coconut oil
Essential oils (optional – I used 3 drops of ylang-ylang, 4 drops of sweet orange, and 2 drops of tea tree)
      Mix well.
      Hope that helps.

    • Hayat says...

      Thanks Cheryl!
I’m going to try it out his weekend.

  37. LPD says...

Am I alone in this? Even regular aluminum-based deodorant doesn’t work terribly well on me. (It’s not that I sweat a lot. It’s just that my underarms get so stinky… within a few hours of the application.) So natural deodorant is no help whatsoever. Anyone else face this problem? Is there a natural deodorant that actually works for people like me?

    • Annie says...

      Hello,
Do you by chance eat a lot of garlic? I notice that when I am in a phase where I eat a lot of it I super stink no matter what I use….. and when I keep it to a minimum, I hardly smell:)

  38. hannah says...

Always and forever – Weleda Sage.

  39. Rue says...

One time years ago I forgot my own deodorant and swiped on my then-boyfriend’s Tom’s of Maine just before we walked out the door for a big road trip.

I have no idea what ingredient irritated me, but within ten minutes my armpits felt like they were ON FIRE. I was sitting in the passenger seat holding my arms away from my sides because it was less painful if the skin had air circulation. I was BEGGING my boyfriend to make a beeline for the nearest CVS, and we were in tears laughing at how ridiculous it was.

So we detoured to the CVS that was like 10 minutes from our house, darted inside and bought face cleansing wipes and one of my trusted deodorant brands, and then I sat in the car wiping my armpits and applying the new deodorant.

We thought we were gonna be all “out on the open road” or whatever for like 7 hours and instead we’re sitting there in the CVS parking lot ten minutes from home, crying laughing.

Other natural deodorants have worked fine for me, but I still haven’t found a favorite. Currently my low-level aluminum one from Dove has kind of stopped cutting my odor, so maybe I should try some of these recs.

  40. liz says...

ready for the best deodorant secret ever? use bha toner, such as paula’s choice bha 2%, on your armpits. I’ve also used biologique recharge p50 and it works wonderful. I’m sure any bha acid would work! Bacteria can’t grow! This has been life changing for me.

    • Adriana says...

Yes! I just tried this based on another readers comments and I swear it works so well!

  41. thanks for describe over beauty over nature…..

  42. Karen says...

Having tried every single natural one under the sun over the years, and having ZERO of them work for me – I’ve found the holy grail. Seriously, nothing would work for me, I would have body odor after 2-3 hours with all the other options. Outside of all the natural brands I tried the other options like apple cider vinegar, essential oils, collodial silver, you name it – I’ve tried it.

But this is the dead simple trick:

    *** Magnesium Oil spray ***

Two spritz’s under each arm and it WORKS.

I use Life Flo brand (the same thing you’d spray on your body for transdermal magnesium supplementation.)

I got my stinky teenage son to try it – IT WORKS.

  43. Sarah says...

The best trick if you wear natural deodorant- swipe apple cider vinegar on your armpits before bed. It kills bacteria and works miracles for the day in between showers :)

    • I’m so fascinated by this! You can do the same with Noxema (or any brand) salicylic acid facial pads. They kill the stinky bacteria!

    • bless you for this comment, trying it tonight!

  44. Debbie says...

I love Kiss My Face deodorant in the Cucumber Green Tea scent. No aluminum, no parabens. I order it on Amazon but I am sure it is also sold in some stores. It works for me, smells wonderful. I will probably never use anything else.

  45. Caitlin says...

SCHMIDTS WORKS SO WELL. I love their magnesium and charcoal which sounds like it will smell like metal and dirt but in fact smells like a more feminine Old Spice? It seriously works so well. Can buy them at most natural food stores and I think Whole Foods

    • Liz C says...

Ditto!!!!! It really works!! I buy it at Target.

    • Kate says...

Yes this is my fave as well and I’m a sweaty person who works outside doing a physical job, and I’ve tried a lot of naturals over the last 5 years. In extreme weather need a reapp about 3pm!

  46. I echo all those who love Native. The only one I’ve tried and liked and works well!

    • brie says...

I am SO SMELLY!! And NATIVE OMG worked absolute miracles! Only one to work for me thus far!

  47. AC says...

I’ve been pretty happy with Piper Wai. The smell reminds me a bit of the antifungal stuff we used to put on our horses (I think it’s meant to be refreshing – eucalyptus and such) but other than that, it’s great. I tried Schmidt’s for a bit and it made my left underarm (just my left) break out in a horrible, itchy rash!

    • MT says...

Same! I loved Schmidt’s at first, but then I got hooked on Piperwai and haven’t looked back. Their customer service is AMAZING too. Completely obsessed.

  48. Ivy says...

My problem with natural deodorants is that they stain the underarms of my shirts! Does anyone else have that problem and have you found a natural deodorant option that doesn’t stain?

    • Erin says...

Me too!! I haven’t figured out how to mitigate this either…

    • el says...

I have been using Schmidts and have the same problem. I’ve ruined so many shirts since I switched.

    • I had this problem too. I’ve found success with Saje’s natural spray on deodorant. It’s not coconut oil based, so no stains! And it’s working well for me in terms of taming odor.

    • Ivy says...

Thanks for the tip Lisa! I’ll have to try it.

  49. Kate says...

Native (coconut scent) is wonderful! It even works for my teenage son who is an athlete!

  50. Nicole says...

Primally Pure makes the best deodorant of any kind I have ever used. They were the second brand of natural deodorant I tried, and I have never had to look any further.
I am prone to sweat by nature (and genetics), so no one is more surprised than I am that this would work so well… But even 9 months pregnant in July (??‍♀️), this deodorant worked brilliantly – and, equally important, safely.
Because some people develop a rash or other reaction from natural deodorant, they have a special formula for sensitive skin, which I love. And they even have a subscription service that delivers your deodorant(s) at a chosen interval without having to reorder (and free shipping!).
Now it sounds like I work for them (I wish!), but honestly I am just huge, grateful fan and can’t say enough good things about this company and the care they take in making their products. I actually even got a stick for my non-believer husband to try, and he ended up loving it, too! That was about 3 years ago…and we have never looked back. So very, very worth a try.

    https://primallypure.com/collections/deodorant

    • Emilie says...

I love Primally Pure too! I switched from Native after it stopped working well for me.

  51. In general I find that whether a deodorant works for you or not is really personal. Also – sometimes one that works for awhile, will not longer work and you’ll have to do a switch.

I’ve had the best success using one I make myself – a combination of baking soda, corn starch, coconut oil, lavender and tea tree essential oils.

    • Luna says...

I would love your recipe! Pretty pleeease?

  52. jaime says...

As a sweaty person, I would like to put out a hearty endorsement for the “don’t sweat it” t-shirt by knix. Natural deodorants help with the smell but I still get pretty sweaty. The shirt has absorbent pads in the pits and keeps my clothes dry. Sweaty people: you can wear shirts of any color (gray!!) and be confident in them!

  53. Also on the Schmidt’s bandwagon. There was a HUGE difference using this vs. the other crappy non-natural stuff I was using before – so much better! I love the lavender scent. But… after a few months of use it started mildly irritating my skin – anyone else with these side effects? I think I might change to the calendula variety next time and hope a change of oils will help.

    • Sasha says...

Gave me an immediate rash. All the natural ones do, it sucks.

    • J says...

Same thing happened to me after a few months and I was using the unscented one. After a while of not using it I thought it was safe to try again with one of the sensitive versions- nope. I can never use Schmidt’s again it seems, so save yourself and switch now!

    • Turtle Toms says...

I broke out in a severe rash after using Schmidt’s for a few days. I was told by a nurse friend the amount of baking soda in Schmidt’s causes problems for lots of folks. I love Nubian Heritage 24-hour deodorant. Doesn’t actually last 24 hours, but it is non-irritating and does the job all day long.

    • Yes, me too! worked great for a while then the rash. even tried the unscented. still a rash. :/

  54. Kellena says...

I love LONE Deoderant! It last all day and a little goes a long way. I prefer the bold with the black label because it’snot sticky or staining.

  55. Val says...

    I love Hippy Pits https://hippypits.com/
Their catchphrase is true: natural deodorant that actually works! It is pasty to apply but not too bad and so worth it.

  56. Haha, love this! I’ve been trying to find one that I love, too. Will have to try the coconut one you mentioned. I just started using Bali Secrets original scent this week, and so far it’s working really well. (I tried their Rose scent before and I loved the scent but it didn’t always work as well as I’d like…)

  57. Lauren says...

Skin Foodie!!!! On Etsy! Try “Root” scent, all natural essential oils, works like a dream and a slightly masculine smell just as I like… all of her body butters are amazing too, especially for sensitive skin. Made with all natural ingredients and whipped so not greasy. Love love love after searching forever!

  58. Viv says...

Here in Germany, I prefer Sante Kristall, which is gloriously unscented and effective, compared to the many others I’ve tried. (Also available at dm, our amazing, very eco-friendly drugstore!) Oh, and an easy tip–if you shave your armpits a little *too* closely, just rub on a dash of coconut oil to soothe them before applying deodorant. Helps take off any burn!

    • Such good tips – thanks for sharing, Viv. I haven’t found any natural deos in Central Europe so I’ll definitely take a look at DM. (love the coconut oil tip, as well)

  59. Barb says...

    LOL! Thanks, Caroline!

  60. Claire says...

For me, Native is the only winner in the natural deodorant contest. I’ve tried them all. It even works on those weird weeks when I’m two-days-no-shower-plus-gym. (TMI?) I’d love to hear Caroline’s report on her experience with Native, should she try it.

    • Sarah says...

I second this! It just works

  61. Jen says...

I’m always to hear about new natural deodorants. I’ve been using Soapwalla’s original since 2012, but now that my daughter is in need, I like that she can experiment with a whole host of natural brands and find out what works for her (or at least for the rest of us!). Currently she is using Schmidt’s Sage and Lavender. Thanks for experimenting for us!

  62. Lucia L says...

I use Lavilin. It says odor free for up to 7 days. I would say that’s a stretch but I can definitely get 3 days out of one application and up to 5 if it’s not too hot. I ran out for a few days and used the Crystal, I smelled so bad I it was shocking. Is it possible natural deodorant that doesn’t work makes you smell worse than using nothing?
Anyway, I love trying new products, but I’ve been buying Lavilin for the past few years because it works and doesn’t give me a rash even on just shaved skin. It’s pricey but lasts forever. I get it from Whole Foods.

  63. Raquel says...

Dear ladies prone to skins rashes and dermatitis,

I have tried every single brand of natural (and non-natural) out there. My skin is so so sensitive and prone to irritation that I could only wear white clothes until I was 6 years old, because the fabric dye irritated my skin!!!

A few things I have found out are that 1. I must avoid anything with baking soda in its formula and 2. shave at night and not put deo afterwards and 3. use thermal water REALLY HELPS!! I put some after the shower and pat dry and it does wonders for my skin. It is pricey but when you have such sensitive skin its a life savior. I apply it on my armpits after the shower and in the morning, prior to applying deodorant. It also really really helps with avoiding rashes post-shaving.

    • Lauren says...

I know your pain! Something strange that really helps my dermatitis, (especially during winter, and ESPECIALLY on my hands of all places) is Lanolin (the nipple cream for nursing). A very very thin layer melted between your finger tips and then apply. :) Make sure not too use too much because it will clog your pores. All it does is concentrate your skin on healing itself. xoxo

    • Raquel says...

Thank you, Lauren!! I am definitely trying that. XO

  64. Monica says...

I’ve been using Native (the coconut scent), and it’s really great.

  65. Suzanne says...

Primal Pit Paste jars all the way! Tom’s was SO drying and painful for me, but I love how Primal Pit Paste has different strength levels and you can order a set of samples to try out which scent is best. Jasmine is my fave. It keeps me feeling fresh all day, even when I work out. I’ve heard that the sticks are not as effective as the jars, though.

    • Kate says...

Yesssss I love Primal Pit Paste! Have been using their lavender scent for years. I like the convenience of the stick now but I did start out with the jars. For both a little goes a long way, i just looked back at my order history convinced I needed more but two sticks easily last a year! (Which is good because it’s expensive!) xoxo

  66. Carrie says...

I personally wear regular anti-perspirant because the natural ones I’ve tried made my armpits super rashy and painful! I was, however, surprised at how well the natural ones worked to keep me dry and smelling good- that was a shocker. Soapwalla kitchen paste was the most impressive but there again it left me with a painful rash.

    • Laura says...

Just in case you are in Canada… I had the same problem (soapwalla – it worked! but the rash!). A friend told me to try a Canadian brand, “Garden City Essentials.” She’s a doctor (& athlete) so I gave her the benefit of the doubt and ordered a small sample pot… and it worked! I’ve been using it for two years now will no side effects and sweet, sweet pits. Whenever a friend wants to try natural deo, I send her a travel pot.

  67. Cyndi says...

Alvera Aloe and Almonds works for me and I’m all about Anything Endurance

  68. Christine says...

I transitioned from “regular” deodorant to kiss my face lavender roll-on long ago and liked it just fine. Then, I don’t know when, I just…stopped wearing deodorant. I may have too many kind people in my life who won’t tell me I smell, or it’s just nbd? And if I do find I’m smelly I will do a quick water/hand soap/water wipe – because it’s bacteria right?? I’m alone in this, I’m sure. :)

    • Sarah says...

I’m with you, Christine! I only wear deodorant once every couple months for super special occasions. I went through a transition stinky phase when I first stopped, but then my body adjusted and I (and my very honest husband) never notice an odor.

    • Kate says...

I also quit, a few years ago! I think after a little while everything normalized. It’s great not to worry about my clothes getting stained.

  69. Mandy says...

Fat and the Moon is the only deodorant that has worked for me.
I make my own approximation of it now.

  70. Eric says...

Sams natural Is the only natural deodorant I’ve found that works all day. Being a guy in a warehouse, busy most of the time it’s amazing.

  71. loos says...

My mother used to smell bad. Especially on hot or emotional days – my parents went through a nasty divorce that took up a chunk of my childhood – it kept me from wanting to hug or be close to her. Now, having inherited this particular trait from her, and as a mother myself, I used to worry about smelling funny and be conscious of what my kids would be thinking under my embrace.

Until someone (Caroline? Lexi? I can’t stand that I can’t find it now) came along and recommended Donna Karan Cashmere Mist. I counted the money in the bank and decided to give it a try. To say that a product ‘changes your life’ is usually such an empty overstatement. But let me put it this way instead: without a second thought I now hug my kids close, on days of all the types.

And I am so grateful for it.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      yes! lexi!!!!

    • Lauren E. says...

THANK YOU for this rec! Honestly, I stink. My husband and I have this running joke that he still smells good after a day of no showering and a workout, and I stink 10 minutes after I put my deodorant on. When someone says a deodorant “works” I just assume they’re the normal amount of smelly and nowhere near my rampant funk (sorry, too much??). Gonna give this one a try!

    • Holly says...

YES! I too switched to Cashmere Mist deodorant, stopped wasting my money on “natural” deodorant that didn’t work for me and usually gave me a rash anyway. Thank you Cup Of Jo, but I have to agree the Donna Karen deodorant changed my life too! I am no longer paranoid about my smell or sweat.

  72. I’ve been using the Crystal Body deodorant stick for the last couple of years and absolutely love it. It lasts forever, never leaves white marks (because it’s literally a rock), and I know it makes a difference because I *always* can tell when I forget to put it on. Love, love, love it.

  73. Annie says...

Perfect timing!! I’ve been looking for a new natural deodorant– my homemade stuff isn’t cutting it in a packed hot yoga class!

  74. Andi says...

I’m always interested to try the highly recommended ones! I’m obsessed with the Native deodorants and Piper Wai – if I don’t stink after haying fields in the hot summer sun, I consider it a win!

  75. Elizabeth says...

I love Native deodorant! I especially enjoy the coconut and vanilla, but the lavender is also lovely.

  76. Kathryn says...

Tom’s Of Maine Deodorant Stick Long-Lasting Care in Apricot is the ONLY natural deodorant I’ve tried (and I have tried soooo many) that works! I never smell, and sweat is minimal. It truly lasts all day and all night with one application. The subtle hint of apricot is so refreshing. It’s amazing!!

  77. eliot says...

I had an on-and-off thing with natural deodorant too. Even though everyone told me to give it a month before giving up, I could never make it more than a week or two before breaking down and rubbing chemicals under my arms. One day, ready to try again, I purchased the Jason Aloe Vera deodorant and it is magic (and cheap!). I used it for an entire AC-free summer in India and smelled perfectly fine. MAGIC.

Also, I know some people might think this is sort of gross but about six months ago I stopped shaving my armpits. I told myself it was because I was making a statement about body hair but I was also just lazy (funnily enough I can’t go more than 48 hours without shaving my legs even in the depths of winter…?). The short version is this: since giving up armpit shaving, my pits never smell…even if I forget to throw on deodorant one morning. Even after a crazy sweaty yoga class! Nothing. Hair serves a purpose, y’all.

    • sabrina says...

YES-I too stopped shaving my armpits, more because I get so irritated and rashy from the shave+deodorant combo, that I couldn’t stand it anymore. Plus, it was winter so didn’t really matter. Even with natural deodorants and/or making my own, things would work for a while, then all of a sudden stop. With the rash, I had to stop everything. I just pat some straight corn starch under there. There is def a reason there is hair in your armpits; I literally DO NOT SWEAT OR SMELL EVER. It’s amazing. I smell more when I wear deodorant! And no rash. I will have to gauge my comfort once summer comes again and will perhaps return to Schmidt’s, but as long as I’m wearing long sleeves, I’m good!

    • L says...

I’m so jealous when I see comments like this as the complete opposite is true for me. I’m lazy and hate shaving but always notice an increase in odor when I don’t. :(

    • Turtle Toms says...

I don’t shave my armpits. Liberating. No more bumps, no more itchiness, less smelly. Humans are hairy beings. Not fighting it anymore. Not sure why I ever did.

    • eliot says...

L, at first it was a real stink fest! I think your armpits have to swing back into balance. It took at least a month to become stink-free. Good luck if you decide to try again!

  78. Meg says...

Another vote for Schmidt’s! I switched from a regular antiperspirant to their the Geranium Flower sensitive version last fall. It has a strong scent that took me a few days to get used to, but I don’t notice it anymore. I haven’t put it through a sweaty season yet, but it’s worked well so far. Crossing fingers it holds up come July!

  79. Marcy says...

I’ve been using Essence One, the tea lavender scent, and really like it! I tried the Humble brand one, too, and it’s pretty good.

  80. Megan says...

Have you tried Native yet? If so, how many stars would you give it?

    • Tina says...

All the stars! Native is the best!

  81. Kathryn says...

Pure Principles All Natural Deodorant is simply the best. The active ingredient is Neem, which is a natural anti-microbial and anti-bacterial. I can attest that it provides complete protection even after a rigorous spin class. Plus its only $15, which is less expensive than a lot of the natural deodorant brands out there.

  82. Alicia says...

Green Tidings was a game changer for me! I have hyperhidrosis and even chemical deodorants would not work for my body, and I was always self conscious. I saw the reviews on Amazon and gave the unscented version a shot. It changed my life.

  83. thais says...

The Thai crystal worked really well for me, I love it <3

  84. Meg says...

I’m a sweater (a sweat-er?). I sweat in sweaters but also tshirts and blouses. And my shirts get sweaty. And that is why I stopped with natural deodorant unless I’m wearing a sweater or jacket or a layer that covers a base layer. It is ridiculous to expect humans not to sweat, but I’m conditioned to be embarrassed if, say, I’m giving a presentation at work and my shirt is pitted. Also, I’m at the stage where natural deodorant feels very much like something I “should” do, and I’m starting to give up on those things.

    • Abesha1 says...

I use almost nothing on my body I wouldn’t eat (and I eat well, and organic) but I also sweat heavily. I’d love not to, but …
I use Certain Dri every 48 hrs (never after shaving). Yes, with the aluminum chloride! Choices.

  85. Eric says...

PiperWai is my first wading in total he natural deodorant world and it has been amazing. Not the stick, don’t make that mistake. The jar is key. I have always had sweaty understand even with the mega antiperspirants. It made me worries to switch, but switch I did. Wow. I’m dry all day and still don’t she’ll be the next morning!

  86. Katie says...

In response to the comments along the lines of “why do you care if you smell while working out, be natural” I hate to say this, but there’s smelling like you worked out, and then there’s SMELLING like b.o. — I think there are some folks out there who actually can’t smell themselves in the locker room (perhaps have gone nose-blind). I’m a life-long athlete who is all about getting out there and sweating and not being girly and worried about it, but standing next to someone in the gym whose deodorant doesn’t work is an obvious and uncomfortable thing. Just sayin’. I’m sure some of the natural deodorants work well enough (hence Caroline’s testing!) but it seems folks might not realize on their own if it’s working as well as they think.

  87. Chaz says...

Aaaalllllll about Little Seed Farm’s activated charcoal deodorant. It’s AMAZING, I only ever apply it once but it lasts all day (though I will say- apply it after your clothes are on, it definitely gets on your clothes otherwise) and I’ve been doggedly trying to convince my sister of its magic because I’m such a diehard fan now. You can order samples too!

  88. NSH says...

I add a dropper of tea tree oil to a full bottle of argan oil (both from Trader Joe’s). I rub a dot of the mixture to my pits post shave/shower (air dry before shirt goes on) and I have zero smell. I sweat a lot but I don’t have really smelly sweat if that makes sense. I think the tea tree oil is a natural antibacterial so it wards off the stink. Incidentally, tea tree oil is a natural bug(lice too)/tick repellant and I dab a bit of the oil mixture on nape of neck most days too.

  89. dana says...

I’ve had stinky pits for as long as I can remember and I’ve tried so many different products. Natural/Chemical/Woman’s/Men’s/Everything. No matter the product, I’d start to feel stinky towards the end of the day. But lately, I’ve noticed that when I use a BHA lotion (like CeraVe SA lotion) after I shower, I don’t smell. It’s like magic! I don’t even need deodorant now.

    • Michelle says...

wait, so you use it on your underarms?

  90. Emily says...

Caroline– I really think you should test out Lavilin Underarm Deodorant Cream. It’s life changing! I buy it at a natural foods store, Sprouts, for around $13. It says one application can keep you odor free for up to 7 days, and I find that to be true. I apply it about once a week. It’s very thick, so I put it on after a shower in the evening so it can soak in. I wouldn’t apply it right before wearing a sleeveless shirt or anything. The container lasts a while, since you only use about a pea sized bit for each underarm. I was so glad to have discovered this, and I’m hooked for life!
    https://www.amazon.com/Lavilin-AIN-001-Underarm-Deodorant-Cream/dp/B0013OXEFU?th=1

I have also used the Grapefruit Deodorant Cream by Meow Meow Tweet. I like the scent of it, but it doesn’t work as well as Lavilin for me.
    https://www.amazon.com/Meow-Tweet-Baking-Grapefruit-Deodorant/dp/B00QJ446XS?th=1

Good luck in your quest! :)

    • Nicole says...

I have tried about a half dozen natural deodorants too, and settled in meow meow tweet- grapefruit is the best scent. And definitely second not wasting your money on the roll on piper wai or anything with baking soda

  91. Harlie says...

I love, love, love Soapwalla. I can now wear gray t-shirts! ;) It’s in a cream-form, so you have to apply it with your fingers, but I got used to that really fast. It’s the best!

  92. Heather says...

Girl, please never ever stop this quest! With you every yakky step of the way!

  93. Jessica Thiessen says...

YES! I love all these reviews! I’m on the slow journey of cleaning up my entire life to natural products, so the more natural beauty and make up reviews, the happier my heart is.
I’ve been using natural deodorant and other amazing skin care products from a local-to-me company called K’Pure and I can’t believe how happy my skin is. Check them out!

  94. Mary Lynne says...

PiperWai – a deodorant, not an antipersperant, but it works well for me.

  95. Danielle says...

Lume Deodorant has been a life changer for me. https://lumedeodorant.com/

It’s fairly new to the market but the stuff is awesome!

  96. We use a small brand from here in New York, called Lymph Candy (is that not the cleverest name!?). It’s the only natural deodorant that works for my husband, after years of putting up with homemade and other options. They have an extra strength option and a sensitive option. He uses extra and I use regular. I like the geranium scent and he likes the cedarwood.
As far as whether it’s worth it to switch….I guess I’m not the questioner type, so there are personality things that play into what people want proven to them. For me, any possibility that antiperspirant/aluminum is unhealthy is just worth being careful. I’m like that with all ingredients though. With aluminum specifically, the POSSIBLE risks are high enough, and there’s also just the fact that sweating is an important function of our bodies and I don’t want to stop that (how many people do you know who use antiperspirant and then take it OFF to work out? Not usually.). I just want to cover up the smell ;)

  97. I’m going to join the chorus for Schmidt’s! It’s amazing…and I live in Texas and am stinky and I still love it. I was using the Lavender Sage, which I liked, and I hear that the Bergamot Lime is awesome, but the Rose Vanilla makes me smell like the ghost of a very fancy Victorian woman, and I AM HERE FOR IT.

  98. Ann says...

Body chemistry is so interesting – it is amazing to me that a deodorant can be a game-changer for one person and does nothing for another person.
I am allergic to aluminum and have been on an aluminum-free deodorant quest for a number of years. I have found most of these, including Soapwalla, Lavanila, Tom’s, etc, to be equivalent of no deodorant at all, but Schmidts and Native work like a charm – I would be lost without them.
Milk of magnesia works very well, except on the sweeties days, but is too much work.

  99. Natasha says...

I’ve just recently discovered organic & vegan deo cream from German brand PonyHütchen and I recommend it EVERY living person I came across.

  100. Natalia says...

I use a mineral stone that works great when not moving around a lot and when I want that extra anti-smell protection I just swipe a bit of coconut oil as if to moisturize my armpits and it works great!
And plus, coconut oil is the BOMB I don’t understand the hate it gets, I use it for everything! haha
