Pretty Looks for Spring

Sezane spring collection

With spring officially here (at least as far as the calendar is concerned), we’re excited to start dressing lighter and brighter. So, this past weekend we went shopping with two friends, Alex and Christina, to try on pieces from Sézane’s spring collection. Here’s what they chose…

Sezane L'Appartement

We met at L’Appartement New York, Sézane’s beautiful store in downtown Manhattan. We’ve always loved Sézane pieces for their easy, French style. (How cute is this?)

Alex was looking for work clothes for her office job in the beauty industry…

While Christina was browsing for date night looks.

After perusing a bunch of different options, it was time to try things on.

Shoes, bag, bracelets.

Alex’s first look was this navy dress, with pockets! (Few things are better than dresses with pockets.) “I love dresses for work, especially when the weather gets warmer,” she said. “You don’t have to think about getting dressed — you just put them on and go.”

Earrings, bag, shoes.

Next, she tried a jeans-and-blouse combo, to wear on casual Fridays. “When shopping for jeans, it’s always helpful to try them sitting down, standing up, wandering around…” she explained.

“This outfit feels like ‘me,'” she said. “It’s effortless, and I love the detailing on the back.”

Meanwhile, Christina was gravitating towards fun patterns. “My daily uniform is T-shirts and jeans, but for nights out, I like mixing bolder prints,” she said, pairing this striped top with a sequined mini skirt.

Next, she tried a floaty dress with comfy ballerina flats.

“Dresses are great for dates, but they have to be comfortable,” Christina said. “I want to be ready for adventures!”

Which of these looks are your favorites? You can see the entire Sézane collection here.

Thank you to Sézane for such a fun morning!

  1. I had an opportunity to go to the Sézane shop in L.A. at The Grove and it was so gorgeous and everything was beautiful and well made! a little above my own budget but i managed to buy a little hand mirror because I just couldn’t resist! can’t wait to be able to buy some of their shoes or purses, which i am absolutely in love with!

  2. jessica clare says...

All so gorgeous….and of course, I USED to live on the corner of Elizabeth and Prince, boo hoo! :( Guess I need to plan a trip!

  3. Bailey says...

I have to just mention that I ordered a dress online from Sézane last year and the quality is really amazing!! Fit true to size, and I wore it practically every day to work in the summer. Will be buying another dress from them this year based on that purchase. I promise I don’t work for them, just wanted to shout out to CoJ for supporting this brand because it’s the real deal :)

  4. Man….I hate to be a 31-year-old-old-lady…but I hate these short dress styles. I’m 6’3″ and it’s already hard to find things, but whenever minis come into vogue it’s even worse. AND places tend to charge the same for them…which always puzzles me. Super cute outfits though :)

    • Ha I am also 31, but short. And I haven’t worn a short skirt in ages. My legs are nice I just like to dress modest I guess.

  5. Shannon says...

Oh my gosh, those red shoes she’s trying on in the first photo! What are they? I love them!

  6. Cookiewallah says...

Another voice to echo this comment: why are they always sold out of the best pieces (often within minutes of releasing an email about a new collection launch)? And has anyone ever heard of a waitlist item coming back in stock? (Not me.) Just make more!

  7. Morgan says...

I recognized Christina from Project Runway immediately. Her curls are incredible.

    • Laurel says...

      Me too! She’s amazing!

  8. Kate says...

The shoes stop at a US size 9 and the clothing sizes are also limited ! I cannot imagine many of the women whose wardrobes and fashion choices you profile could fit into any of these clothes!
I hate it when cute clothes make me feel like my 5’10” 145 lb body is grotesquely huge because I know it is not!
What happened to clothes for everybody?!!

    • El says...

I nodded along reading your post– SAME. Signed, a tall woman with size 10 feet.

    • Jenny says...

Yes! So many of these “cool” brands leave tall/thick people out :(

    • I LOVE CofJ, and try to support the brands they choose to work with, but huge “AGREED!” to the above statement. Should a woman who wears above a size 14 US not get to enjoy shopping in a variety of lovely stores… it’s so frustrating.

    • Erin says...

The shoes actually stop at a US size 11. You’re probably viewing UK sizing. I’ve bought several pairs from there, and there’s always up to size 11 options.

    • Cynthia says...

The dresses stop at a size 12, and the size chart on line doesn’t have US conversions except for jeans. Those of us who wear size 14 or larger like to look attractive too.

  9. Catherine says...

I love Sezane! And CoJ introduced me to it! I want almost everything in their spring collection! Their quality is excellent as well. Many items are 100% silk and lined, which is so hard to find now!

    • Lisa says...

I agree. So many times I’ve seen beautiful (and more expensive) dresses, only to find out they’re polyester. Are you kidding me?! Sézane is on the more expensive side, but at least they’re quality fabrics. In fact – I think a friend of mine was wearing the navy dress that has been featured on Sunday and I was wondering where she got it from. She looked so chic and comfortable (and not just because she’s parisienne)

  10. Stephanie says...

Christina’s picks are so fun! But I can see myself wearing more of what Alex has on! Love this brand and definitely get some style inspiration from your posts.

  11. Pamela says...

I love this brand but can’t cope with the frustration of looking forward to pieces from the new collection in advance of the release date only to wake up and everything is already sold out! Need to minimise the disappointments in life!

  12. Lauren E. says...

    OMG THAT TIGER BAG! Stunning.

  13. rita says...

Am I the only one who can’t see the collection?
Not on the US size and not on the European one (I am in Europe), none of the links work…

  14. Natalie says...

Sezane’s clothes are so pretty! One thing that drives me crazy though is that they never seem to have a photo of the garment by itself, only on a model who is usually in a pose where you can’t see the whole item. So it’s hard to tell where seams lie, or what the actual construction is. When spending that amount I think it would be super helpful to see the item both on a model and by itself. For example, with this shirt http://www.sezane.com/us/product/collection-printemps/capucine-shirt?cou_Id=1124 the model only wears it tucked in – the hem is totally unseen. In case they are taking suggestions. :)

    • C says...

I love this brand too but definitely ditto this piece of feedback!

    • Sasha says...

Third-ed. Almost bought a dress and then realized it would be too short for me. Was hard to tell by the photos!

  15. J says...

Could you please ask Alex where she gets her hair cut and highlighted? It’s amazing!

    • Kelly says...

Totally, her hair is so cute ;) Btw when it said “Alex AND Christina ” when I saw the picture of Alex in profile in the sweater (versus wearing blue dress and white shirt) I was like both her friends seriously have the cutest hair ever only to realize it was Alex in all three pictures when I got to the Christina section, haha. (Of course Christina is super cute too, just funny that I thought Alex was multiple people.)

    • Caroline Donofrio says...

Yes! For color, she sees Clayton at Bumble and Bumble. For cut, she goes to Spoke & Weal.

  16. txilibrin says...

I was hoping for a coupon!!!
I love this hrand but the clothes don’t age well. I’d buy all at a lower price point :(

  17. Elizabeth says...

I really want to love this brand, the pieces are so lovely but……. One, I went to the store the other weekend in NYC and it was SO PACKED I felt like I was fighting a sample sale. Do not recommend going on the weekends. Next, I decided that I would try it in the comfort of my own home and order something, well, almost half the collection is sold out already! I get it’s a hot brand but I hope they figure out a way to be accessible to more people because I’m so over the whole super exclusive thing. I just want a nice and easy shopping experience. Any tips?

    • El says...

Haha yes, I’ve had a similar experience. Between that and the price (which I’m sure is totally justified, the clothes are beautiful!) I often end up just buying the Madewell knockoffs :)

    • Agata says...

      Hey Elisabeth,
I’ve had the same feeling, until I start following them on Instagram! They always put info about when the new collection will be released (the exact date and hour). Although I do understand your frustration. It happened to me few times that I really wanted some dress or skirt and my size was already taken within few minutes on the website. Good luck!

    • Siv says...

I agree! Whenever I like an item with this brand, I don’t have time to really think about the purchase and if an item will work for my lifestyle. Ordering online seems like a frenzy where you have to rush to buy before items are sold out, which doesn’t help me in my quest for more thoughtful shopping… so I pretty much don’t shop here although I love so many of their pieces!

    • Aleka says...

Me too! I used to love shopping there, but it seems so futile now because pieces I’d love to own are essentially gone by the time I can have a look. I’ve stopped shopping there as a result, too stressful a shopping experience.

  18. Em says...

That white blouse’s detail really is beautiful!

  19. Suzanne says...

Sezane has definitely followed in the footsteps of Anne Fontaine with purchases beautifully wrapped in ribbon, and finished off with fresh (or dried) roses and perfume. I will never forget my first Anne Fontaine blouse purchase in Paris and feeling like I had just bought a heirloom. It is classically Parisian for high end French clothing boutiques to honor their customers in this way.

  20. freaking OBSESSED with Sezane lately. this post didn’t help matters!!! love the outfits you featured.

  21. Christine says...

I’m coming to NYC in a few weeks and sezane is definitely on my shopping list! I’ve saved my shopping budget just for it. Can’t wait!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

the store is so beautiful! i hope you love it, christine. and that particular street in nolita is very fun for shopping — with clare v, le labo, etc! around the corner is a very cute bookstore, mcnally jackson. have the best time xoxo

  22. I’m sooooo obsessed with Sezane! Everything is so pretty and now is basically half of my wardrobe, haha.

    Xx – Fernanda

  23. Kim says...

Omg, so fun to see Christina from Project Runway!! I loved her on the show – she’s so spunky and hip – besides being ridiculously gorgeous. Not blown away by any of the spring clothes, but loved the models and woman-owned Sezane!

    • Rae says...

I was wondering if that was Christina from Project Runway! I LOVED her (and all the models) on that season. She is so beautiful and has such a winning personality.

    • Jennifer says...

yes! was also so excited to see christina on here!!

  24. jac says...

but where is the discount? *le sigh*

    • Joanna Goddard says...

yes, sadly no sezane discount this time! but we have another discount coming up on thursday. xoxo

    • Meghan says...

They say hard work makes things look easy. My first thought when reading your comment, Jo, was “They have their posts planned a week in advance?!” LOL! Checked myself, because it must be SO.much.work to run this blog. The tone and vibe, as a reader, feels effortless, yet thoughtful, cozy and spontaneous all at once. Cheers to your hard work!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

oh my gosh, haha, meghan, thank you for saying so! :) it is an INCREDIBLE amount of work to make things look easy — that’s actually the first thing i learned when working in magazines. when you can spot the effort in a post, the writers/editors aren’t working hard enough. there’s so much behind-the-scenes work in different areas (marketing, managing, site coding, hiring, etc), posts that end up getting killed, and steps to a post (like a house tour, for example) that readers don’t realize (we do long phone interviews, major editing and condensing of the transcript, follow-up questions, photo editing, credits scouting), etc etc. anyway, the site is a true pleasure to work on, but so much harder than it looks! (which is why it’s 9:12pm right now and i’m working:)

  25. Kathy says...

I learned about Sezane from Cup of Jo and have since purchased a few items. Beautiful style and quality! Customer service is great, too. When the orders arrive, the pieces have the most delicious fragrance! I’m told that this is Sezane’s signature scent, but it’s not available for mail order :(. Does anyone know if it’s available in the NY store? I would buy it for sure if it ever becomes available..!

    • Siv says...

I still don’t think the scent is available for purchase in the US. I love it too and am patiently waiting for it to come to the US!

    • Cait says...

YES! Joanna can you please also ask Morgane if they are working to be able to ship the fragrance to the US? It smells fantastic and I would buy it in a heartbeat.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      i’ll ask! xo

  26. L says...

If they could fix their Out of Stock issue… It really drives me crazy, and I don’t like the feeling of shopping like I have a knife under my throat (if I don’t buy this the minute it comes out, i’ll never be able to have it) – not cool

    • Claire says...

Right? I love Sezane so much and they make beautiful clothes. Since they are usually pricey, I want to save up or wait to buy items but then they are sold out immediately and don’t come back into stock. I understand this happening when a business is new and has to work out kinks but this has been going on for a while now :/

    • China says...

I totally feel that it’s frustrating, but I think that almost never making more than they can sell is the way that they are able to have such high quality clothing for expensive, but not insane, prices. And the anticipation and direct-marketing campaigns help keep advertising costs down (which are a big part of why high end fashion is so crazy expensive). Plus their return policy is very reasonable, so you’re not taking a big risk on not liking something if you are quick to purchase.

    • Karina says...

I ordered Sunday morning- new spring collection. I managed to score three pieces in my size (the 2 is always gone first!) and I didn’t have a lot of time to think about it. Everything is gone so quick! But luckily they do have a great return policy. Unfortunately I think their business model is to have just a few of each item. :/

    • Joanna Goddard says...

i’ve heard that they’re the madewell of france — they’re a HUGE deal there. every woman seems to know about them and shop there. things really do fly off the shelves! i, too, wish there were more inventory, and i emailed the founder morgane about it to let her know our wishes :)

    • Agata says...

      Hey!
Try on Wednesdays mornings on their website. At 10:00 AM (Paris time) they usually release few new peaces in each model, so you might be lucky and find your size available!I am a huge fan for last few months, so believe me, it’s worth to check!Good luck :-)

    • K says...

Totally feel this. $200 on a dress is a TON to spend for me, but I do think Sezane would be worth the splurge. That being said, the pressure of seeing what’s available and being forced to quickly make a decision if something is available in my size is not an ideal shopping experience. I was looking right at the release of their spring line yesterday, but couldn’t pull the trigger on something so expensive if I couldn’t really give it much thought.

  27. aga says...

No one does sponsored posts as well as Cup of Jo! I enjoyed this as much as any other (non-sponsored) post. I love how you have captured and showed off the women. Both Sezane and Cup of Jo present women in such a great way.
I discovered Sezane here, and I have pretty much wish-listed half of their pieces. I love their feminine sweaters and boots!

  28. shannon says...

Thank you for showing real people in their clothes! Now I need to get to NY to that store!

  29. Ro says...

That red dress is the stuff of dreams! Is Christina tall? I’m about 5’7 and am trying to guess where it would hit on me.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      she’s pretty tall — maybe 5’11”?

    • Ro says...

Thank you! The dress looks great on her but I’d like it would be a bit longer on me, which seems like it might be the case. Hmmm… now to come up with the extra dough so I can snag it :)

  30. Lily says...

The back of Alex’s shirt is everything!

    • Amanda says...

I agree. I love simple shirts with an added twist. Although now, I want to mix all of the stripes in my closet with floral pants/skirts that I don’t have…

  31. I’d love to know Christina’s hair routine!! From one curly girl to another :)

    • Katie says...

I love her hair! I second this!

    • Kate says...

      Ditto!

    • Emily says...

Yes, I was going to ask. Hair routine AND where does she get it cut?

    • Courtney says...

      Me too!

  32. Kelsey says...

I love sezane posts!! Such beautiful things!

  33. Lisa says...

I’m so glad CoJ introduced me to Sezane! I visited their New York store for the first time last month and bought a lovely dress. Their spring collection is beautiful – love the shoes!

  34. Alex says...

I was just at the Sezane shop in Paris last week! It was gorgeous and when the lovely lady behind the counter wrapped up my purchase, she tied the bag with a silky red ribbon and then placed FRESH FLOWERS (!) inside (and a free cotton tote bag too, which i hear all the cool girls in Paris are using). I know everything in Paris is prettier, but my American friends and I walked out with mouths agape and cracking up – it was such a beautiful shopping experience. I will take all of the shoes and purses, please.
