Yes, yes, yes to all – I always have my post-it “flags” at the ready when I tuck into a new cookbook borrowed from the library!
Hah! Super cute! What delightful Illustrations! It got a laugh out of me!

I also already have my 2018 planner. This is a definitely optimism! No matter what happened in the year, I always lok forward to the new year – it’s an invisible reset button.
Marie Andrew, if this is how you think, you are one fascinating human.
I bought a planner for 2018 after using one all 2017…and I still view it as more optimistic than realistic. Most of what I write in my planner is added after the fact rather than before…because life changes so quickly that my planner gets to be a mess if it is something I am not sure of! Also, I don’t want to use pencil for some reason.
Anyway…this is a pretty perfect illustration of optimism! :)
Haha, are we implying that “packing three times the clothes you need including a winter coat and sweaters of varying weights for a weekend trip” is pessimism? Also, I totally love reading cookbooks.
So lovely.
This is my favorite cartoon so far! Right on the mark. :) For me it is also making a graph paper diet chart with the dates on the left and weight loss goals marked out by a beautiful downward sloping (never to be achieved) line!
Love this! Glad to know I’m not the only one left keeping a written planner! :)
LOVE this. x
Adding to the list:
Calling your Republican senator to ask for safer gun laws.
Sitting down with a student to come up with a plan to pass the class.
Expensive surgery for your 14-year-old dog/BFF.
Keeping the outgrown baby clothes just in case.
Biking instead of driving.
Couples therapy.
I love all of these.
Louisa,
Amen.
I have done all of these except the New Year’s Eve dress. Which I always browse for online but never buy because I’m not fancy in real life and can’t justify the purchase for what I know from experience will be pizza alone on the sofa watching Call The Midwife at midnight. Perhaps New Year’s Eve Jammies are a better idea. Optimism vs. Realism.
LOVE this – I’m all about New Years yummy treats, great movies and sofa – I’m ABSOLUTELY buying a New-Years special PJ set – there are some cute cactus ones at Target I’ve been eyeing – thanks for the inspo! :D
The extra concert ticket. Oh that makes my heart hurt. I optimistically spent a lot of money on extra concert tickets that never got used.
that one is oh so real.
Just did this (or rather, bought the tickets three months ago). Things fell apart pretty much the week of, and I ended up going with a friend. Much better decision, but oh, it still hurts.
I love this!! And I am totally getting inspired… ;)
Just love this!!
I’ve already bought my 2018 planner. It’s just a small one, but great for writing down appointments and special things.
I love the idea of a New Year’s dress, though I’ll be on a train on New Year’s Eve! Other than that, yes, nailed it :)
Andrew recently wrote an essay on Optimism that is very much worth reading. https://medium.com/wordsthatmatter/optimism-is-exhausting-24af027051f4
this is just what I needed to read. thank you.
Nailed it!
The new planner ❤️
A friend gave me her yoga mat that got a smudge on it—I optimistically had it in my car thinking I would pick up yoga, but now I just use the mat in my car for when I transport wedding cakes for work ? opposite use haha
