Which Dress Is Best for a Date?

Joanna Goddard and Alex Williams wedding

Today is my and Alex’s eighth wedding anniversary. (Our wedding day feels simultaneously like yesterday and a lifetime ago.) We’re going out to dinner this week, and I have a question for the group: What do you wear on dates? I usually wear dresses that are sort of flow-y and relaxed — like this or this — but I’d love to get out of my everyday zone and make the night feel special, you know? Like, put on perfume and actually shave my legs and shimmy into something more dramatic. Here are the dresses I’m thinking of…

Date Night Dresses

First up, this black dress with spaghetti straps and a pencil skirt vibe.

Date Night Dresses

I love this burgundy number (and how sexy is the combo of a velvet dress and slippery smooth just-moisturized arms?).

Date Night Dresses

This white dress has a lace bodice and open back.

Thoughts? What do you like to wear on nights out? What makes you feel sexy? (Also, this backless one is kind of cute with hearts:)

P.S. Our very first date, and another exciting evening.

  1. Katie says...

They’re all great but the black one is so sexy! That’s my vote for a special date night celebration!

  2. Aaaahhhhh that white one is everything, Want!

  3. I like all three. The velvet is a fun shape and neat texture. The LBD is an :BD, nuff said. And the white- I love what someone else said- “I love you so much I’d marry you again” vibes there. Plus, I sort of think depending on hair and shoe combo it could take you to a fancy brunch or or other party too. But all three seem to be very versatile depending on what you paired things with.

  4. Jen says...

Aw eight years! I remember starting to read your blog and you two just met. I was living over in the states and moved back to Ireland at the same time you married. Im eight years home! Congratulations, hope you have a great celebration and Im hoping you wore the burgundy number cos Yowza!

  5. Allison says...

I wear my wedding dress for anniversary dates. I especially chose a tea-length dress so it had re-wearability because I liked the idea of having more happy memories in it. I also wore it the first time I took my daughter to see the Nutcracker Ballet.

    • Siga says...

Oh my, I wish I read this comment before I got married 11 years ago!

    • Sarah says...

Genius. Might have to do that with my rehearsal dinner dress!

  6. Jenny says...

    Burgundy. Definitely the burgundy…

  7. Angie says...

While everyone weighs in on the dress choice, I’m still laughing over your comment about shaving your legs! It’s always interesting to me to see what is considered “special effort.” In 37 years of marriage to my sweetie, I’ve missed daily shaving my legs maybe 10 times. I can’t stand bristly legs! 😂 Special night? You’ll find me wearing actual makeup, or at least a tad more than my usual nude lipstick/eyeliner combo.

  8. Dottie Poole says...

That black dress with the thin straps and bottom flounce would be my choice. I love a good streamlined dress and that one is it. I think it would look amazing on you. Happy anniversary. Dottie

  9. jona hilario says...

I just found out that my husband does not notice what anybody wears. Like we’re all just floating heads to him, I think? So I’ve mostly decided I should just wear what makes me feel good :) But that black dress has a lovely shape!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      hahahaha

  10. I like the white one for the slightly boho rockstar/wedding dress style. In y head it has that “hey I love you so much I’d marry you again!” vibe while “All you need is love” by the Beatles plays in the background.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      awwww, amy, i love that!

  11. Vish says...

The Reformation dress is sensational!! Thank you so much for bringing the brand to my notice – I love their elegant, sensual, classic designs. I’m revamping my wardrobe now and I’d love if any readers could suggest brands similar to Reformation for chic dresses. Any tips ladies?

  12. Erin says...

I really love the lines on the burgundy one- there’s something a little bit 70’s/Jerry Hall about it and I think that neckline is super sexy on smaller chests. If you’re not sure about the color, you could go with the navy version of it, which might be a little more versatile. I can see it also being cute with a cardigan for colder weather or the holidays.

  13. The backless one looks perfect since you said you normally like one that’s flowy! It’s flowy but sexy too :)

  14. Roselyn Gonzalez says...

Okay, but what DID you wear?!?

  15. Lindsay says...

I would get the black dress but I saw on the website that they had in red. The red version would be HOT on you!

    • jilly says...

I have to second that, Lindsay…wear the sexiest dress before the summer ends! Red would be amazing!

  16. I always wear the same outfit and silhouette but the pieces just get updated over the years. Lately it’s blue skinny CoH or Madewell jeans that sit on my ankles, black point-toe stilettos and my black silk Juliette Hogan shirt from about 5 years ago (it’s an investment piece, still looks new). I team these with very fine gold jewellery, my red Sezane shoulder bag with gold chain and wear my long hair in a high ponytail. I’m about 6′ 2″ and it’s a very empowering look. My partner Paul loves it, even if I tower over him!

  17. Beth says...

Wow 8 years! I still remember when you were planning you wedding (as I did not long after) and before you had two little boys (and now I’m about to have my second). Congratulations and thank you for sharing so many parts of your life. As I long time reader I feel as if I’ve been along for the ride, la Vita Bella x

  18. That red dress is definitely right up my alley! I haven’t worn velvet before, but I love bold colours and a low neck. Plus there’s just something about the colour red that makes me feel amazing!

    Indya

  19. Andie says...

I know I’m dividing the masses here but the black one is a bit too safe and predictable. Depending on the fit the shoestrings off a bandeau top might drive you mad if they are slipping. My pick definitely the velvet one is a mix of fun and sophistication, it’s sexy and textural and let’s face it, looks more comfortable to wear.
You seem like such a hapoy couple, have a great night.

  20. Theresa says...

The black dress all the way!!

  21. Trish says...

    Burgundy. Definitely.

  22. MCW says...

Wowza, that black dress is a real dish! Congratulations on eight years married, what a satisfying accomplishment!

For date nights I like to try to stick to sensual materials like silk, cotton, linen, cashmere, lace, leather and suede. In the winter my favorite is skinny leather ankle pants, suede stilettos and a deep v-neck cashmere boyfriend sweater with an eyelash lace bra barely peeking out the top- all in black.

  23. Leah says...

The white lace dress. Still you with a hint of sexy.

  24. Chika says...

Gotta go with that black one!! The silhouette is awesome and much more versatile than the velvet or white one…I pictured it on you immediately and would bet anything Alex would be WOWED by it!

  25. Courtney says...

    Black! :)

  26. Jen says...

    Cuties!

  27. Eleni says...

The black dress is simultaneously sexy and alluring, yet sophisticated and a bit reserved. It’s a classic, and you’d look stunning! Happy anniversary :)
    -E

  28. I can’t believe everyone is saying burgundy velvet. I mean, you would look amazing in it…but put that black dress on and Alex is gonna lose his mind.

    • jilly says...

      exactly!

  29. Meghan says...

I feel like you would look stunning in the red velvet! Happy anniversary!!

  30. Bobbekay says...

You go girl……………….you would like beautiful in either dress. You and Alex are adorable.

  31. A says...

    The velvet burgundy dress!

  32. sofia says...

    burgundy

    sexy

    comfy

    ‘nough said

  33. Tiffany says...

    LBD. Happy anniversary!

  34. Julieta says...

    Red velvet ;)

  35. Do you remember the dinner scene in Flashdance? Alex-Jennifer Beals wearing a tuxedo with no shirt, only bib front, bow tie and cuffs is my guiding light when thinking about a breath taking outfit for a date! (Not that I’ve ever dressed up that way… my everyday style is closer to what she wears when working in the steel mill!)

  36. Hanna says...

Joanna, I say the black number! Feels extra special and I’ve been living by Cuyana’s motto of “fewer, better things”. Feels like one you’d keep in your closet for years and wear over and over!

  37. Erin says...

The black one…100%. A red lip and some strappy sandals-perfection!

  38. Lindsay says...

I love reformation! That one is beautiful! Happy Anniversary🎉

  39. I’m obsessed with that first dress but it depends on what kind of date you guys have in mind. Something swanky could totally call for that dress but if you are doing something more casual / daytime, then I’d go with the white one.

  40. Emily K says...

100% absolutely no arguments the black dress. It’s a dream!

    • Lily says...

      Same!!

  41. Ah, definitely the black Reformation dress! Second up would be the velvet (although yes, definite ’90s vibes – I wore a burgundy velvet dress to a middle school dance circa ’96), and I’m not feeling the white – too short, too babydoll, too saccharine. Plus Reformation makes an effort on the sustainability front, which matters to me. I’m been dreaming of getting one of their dresses, especially the wrap types with deep v-necks and sleeves… this may be my favorite: https://www.thereformation.com/products/carina-dress-jordie Works day or night. :)

Happy Anni! Hope you two have a lovely date night!

  42. TJL says...

The first black one! Happy Anniversary 🖤

  43. Jane says...

I have a go to black jumpsuit with a super low back, belted at the waist, and I feel great in it. Also, a high-waisted black leather pencil skirt I always feel super sexy with a silk top tucked in.

  44. Sasha says...

I LOVE them all! You have such lovely taste.

I would skip the black one, it’s beautiful, but maybe a little predictable and you want something really special.

Then I would go for comfort. Comfortable= happy= sexy! And what suits you better burgundy or white? High neck or low?

You will look gorgeous in any of the three. Happy anniversary! Have so much fun. (8 means you made it past the 7 year itch!!)

    • Joanna Goddard says...

hahaha that’s what alex keeps saying: “we made it past the seven-year itch, baby!” :)

  45. Emily says...

I think those first two dresses would look amazing on you and would get you out of your everyday zone.

  46. Erin says...

Burgundy! It has the classy sexiness of the black with just a hint of something different.

  47. Megan says...

First one for sure! Super sexy! I’m in the newborn+toddler trenches and will live out date nights vicariously through this post.

  48. Meghan says...

I remember a post from way back saying Alex was wow-ed when you met up once after work wearing a pencil skirt. My vote’s for the first, then! Congratulations, you two!

  49. Laura says...

I love the burgundy one! If I had nice arms and a smaller chest I would wear spaghetti strap dresses all the time!!
I tend to wear wrap dresses on fancy dates and skater-style dresses for more casual ones

  50. Get the one you can wear the most number of times over the years and can be worn dressed down when you feel like it.

My date night formulae : little blue dress and red lip.

Happy annvy ! What is he wearing ?

    • Joanna Goddard says...

he has a grey suit that he loves, so i’m sure he’ll wear that!

  51. Monica says...

The first dress, it has Moxie written all over it !

  52. Anna says...

The first one! You can’t go wrong with a LBD :-) Happy anniversary!

  53. Katherine Rose says...

I have the black reformation one and it’s SO sexy, yet demure! xx

  54. L8Blmr says...

The black one is sex on a stick! Go for it!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      hahahaha

  55. Robin says...

White! But they’re all lovely. Have a great evening!

  56. Liz says...

Dress 1 is the best combination of modern, understated, sophisticated, but devastatingly sexy, in my opinion. Have fun!

  57. M says...

    Definitely the first one!

  58. Diarra says...

    I’d say…the WHITE one… for wedding anniversary…plus it’s end of summer… and the sleeves give it a regal vibe…and it’s classy… and it’ll photograph really well.

But, wear the one Alex would mostly like you in!

    -D

  59. Elle says...

Happy anniversary! My husband and I had our eighth- year anniversary exactly a week ago! We also have two boys and expecting a third in January.

  60. Georgia says...

Happy anniversary! I loveee the Reformation (for their style and their eco-friendly business model.) I’ve been dying to get one of their slinky numbers for ages- and I bet that one would look great on you!

  61. Carol Wynn says...

The black number is very sexy! I also love dress #3 but it looks like your go-to look.
    Happy Anniversary!

  62. I like the black! You can jazz it up with accessories and printed shoes, perhaps? Have a blast!

  63. Lauren E. says...

Happy anniversary! I feel like I never have an excuse to wear a dress, even on a date. My husband and I usually go on spur of the moment dates to the same spots all the time and I’m always wearing a t-shirt and jeans. Maybe for our first anniversary this year I’ll dress up no matter what we do :)

  64. Maranda says...

Congratulations on your anniversary! My vote is for dress #1.

  65. Carolyn says...

    The first one, definitely.

  66. I haven’t bought a dress in a minute haha, but my next buy will definitely be a little black dress. It’s such an essential that I’ve completely overlooked and now that I’m in #Team30s, I need to up my wardrobe ante.

  67. Leah says...

the black one will look gorgeous on you! happy anniversary! xoxo

  68. Arianna says...

Black one for sure is the sexiest!! And I think men everywhere would agree!

  69. Cara says...

Yes, I love the burgundy velvet! It’s classy with a sexy edge, and the color is perfect for the fading of summer into fall.

    • Rachel Adrianna says...

I agree, the burdandy gets my vote :)

  70. Eliza says...

I know I’m in the minority here, but I love the white one!! I think sometimes less is more and that men find it sexier when there is less actually revealed–guess it leaves more to the imagination?! The cutout back is beautiful, and the dress has hints of a bohemian vibe. Would be so pretty on you (and would be a nod to your wedding dress!).

  71. Suzette says...

Happy Anniversary! Love the black dress and definitely open toe heels; shaving la legs is also a must for even more sexy confidence especially when married to a very hands on guy. haha Have a fun date-night! Cheers to another 8 years and then some. ;)

  72. Rochelle says...

The burgundy number would be so great to wear. The cut is beautiful and flattering.

  73. Mamie says...

I vote for the first one and make sure you find lots of excuses to make the same move as the model wearing it above. “Oh dear! Looks like my shoe strap is undone.”

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      hahahaha got it!

    • Jessica says...

I just burst out laughing reading this comment ahahahaha!

  74. Go for very sexy – wow him

  75. Erin says...

Go with the velvet! It’s unique, the color is lovely, and it would look gorgeous on you!

  76. Oh man, the velvet one is stunning. The color and the texture combo looks super alluring.

  77. Laura C. says...

Go for the black one baby! Happy anniversary to you Alex and Jo!

    • Sabrina Izaguirre says...

I agree – the black one looks sexy and frisky yet elegant!
      Perfect for your date.

  78. I vote either the velvet or the black! But more importantly, what perfume will you be wearing? I’ve been all about the Clean Citron Fig lately.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

oh my gosh, that sounds so good. i’d love to try that. right now i’ve been wearing le labo santal 33.

    • You can get a sample from Sephora! :)

  79. Jenny says...

And happy anniversary! Had a great time!!

    • Jenny says...

Have a great time it should say :) :):) :)

  80. Beth says...

    Burgundy velvet!

  81. Heather says...

I have gone on my first batch of online dates just the past few weeks, so this has been on my mind a lot! I have been wearing (somewhat short) shorts (cause I like my legs) with loose silky tops, statement necklace, and sandals. Casual but cute, and definitely my confidence uniform!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      that sounds adorable!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

oh my gosh, veronica, that is GORGEOUS.

    • Melanie says...

I change my vote—THIS one Veronica suggested!!

    • CJ says...

      Whooooo that is hot.

    • Haylie says...

      Omg yes, this one 👏🏼👏🏼

    • katherine says...

Woah, Veronica! Nailed it! This is such a great pick!

    • Claire says...

That is such a great find, Veronica. All the dresses are lovely, but this one seems to have an extra factor. Happy Anniversary!

    • Sophie says...

Wowza! That’s the one for sure.

    • Ingrid says...

Veronica, that dress is perfect! Good eye!

  82. Veronica Hohenstein says...

Definitely #1 or #2. The white number is super cute and totally my jam but not sexy. Happy 8 years!

  83. Jenny says...

I would go for the black one. Classy and sexy at the same time 😍

  84. Congratulations! My husband and I have our sixth wedding anniversary coming up this Sunday.

For date nights, I just wear whatever makes me feel most confident on that particular day. Sometimes it’s mom jeans and heels, other times it’s a wild vintage dress and sandals. If I feel good on the inside I will always look good on the outside!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      happy anniversary, kristin!

  85. Melanie Price says...

OMG…that black dress!!!!! Wow! Put my vote in for that one!

And Happy Anniversary!!! I hope you both have a wonderful evening reminiscing, laughing and flirting with each other. Cheers to you both!!

    Melanie

  86. Eve says...

I’m obsessed with that Reformation dress, I think it would look amazing on you. It comes in black and red and I love both. I think it’s different from your regular style so it would feels special but it’s also really timeless and chic! I don’t like the burgundy velvet dress. Something about the combination of the empire waist + where the hemline falls looks awkward , and the velvet bow in the back is giving me serious childhood-Christmas-pageant vibes. I also love the white shopbop dress! I think a bare back is so sexy in an understated way. Happy Anniversary!!!!

  87. Emily says...

they are all lovely! not that you need another recommendation, but… it’s on sale.

my mom got me this dress for my birthday and at first it felt so much like something i would have worn in high school in the early 2000s (cut on the bias, spaghetti straps). BUT i have loved it and worn it to death for date nights this summer. it’s super easy to wear/dress up/down and i feel so good about how it flows (it’s a rare combination of curve-hugging and comfy).

  88. Em says...

Good god, that red dress!! Even though it looks perfect for winter/the holidays, I love the idea of wearing it on a sexy, late-summer date night. Get it get it :)

  89. K Love says...

Have you looked at Anthro’s fall dresses? This kimono dress is chic, beautiful, and unique, and could double as a great wear-to-a-wedding outfit:

    https://www.anthropologie.com/shop/avian-kimono-midi-dress?category=dresses&color=012

If you have your heart set on velvet, I think the cut of this one is a bit more modern, and love the subtle sexiness of the neckline:

    https://www.anthropologie.com/shop/sasha-velvet-midi-dress?category=dresses&color=061

    Have the best time!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      these are beautiful!

    • Sandra says...

I love that kimono dress!!! Unfortunately I’m trying to find one in a tall, but that is so beautiful!

  90. Bethany R says...

    VELVET!! LOVE IT.

  91. Caitlin says...

The Reformation one is to die for and would look so killer on you! The velvet one is more Christmas/holiday, and I think the white one is pretty, but the black one is just so SPECIAL. I think it perfectly matches the vibe you’re going for. Have fun ;)

  92. Diane says...

    Black for sure! 😉

  93. #1 for sure! It fits what you’ve described as a way to really dress up and be glam for a night. #3 is also great… but #1 is better for a fancy anniversary night!

  94. Allison W says...

I love the white dress, and I think it’d look great on you!

I’ve made a habit of always wearing my rehearsal dinner dress on our anniversary dates which is also a white, lace dress. It’s definitely fancier than what I’d normally wear for a date, but I always love pulling that dress on. It’s a tangible reminder for my husband and I of all the fun and excitement of our wedding weekend. Plus, it’s sure to bring a tear or two to my husband’s eyes. Wearing my rehearsal dinner dress makes an already special occasion even more magical!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      what a sweet tradition, allison.

    • Sasha says...

I love that tradition, what a nice reminder. Your outfit sounds beautiful.

I kick myself all the time that I gave away the beautiful silk wide leg pants and Mandarin collar sleeveless tunic I wore after my wedding (we went out dancing!). They were off white, and once I had babies I couldn’t fathom ever wearing them again. But babies grow up, and I would love to have that outfit back now. Sigh. Sometimes my minimalism gets the better of me :(

    • I love this! And kudos to you for still fitting into it. I love my rehearsal dinner dress too, but I have feeling that after I had my twins last year, that dress is never going to fit again!

  95. Karina says...

Oh I just love that velvety number! Congrats on the anniversary! :)

  96. Looooove the velvet! I find it to be so enchanting. My husband has a deep blue velvet blazer from J. Crew a few years back that slays me every time he wears it.

Happy Anniversary! Also…is it weird that I remember this?….this means it has been EIGHT years since you made Toby! What!!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

hahaha true! i can always remember how many years we’ve been married because it’s 9 months more than toby’s age ;)

  97. Eve says...

It’s my anniversary today too (2nd)! Have fun on your date :) My favorite dress is the black one… so sexy! I’m only going out to eat Indian food tonight, so no fancy dress for me, but I’ll keep in mind the cleavage comment, haha

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      have fun!!!!

  98. Isa says...

I ordered the 3rd dress for a wedding before remembering the rule about wearing white – that’s the only reason I returned it! It was comfortable, fit perfectly, and made me feel so pretty. I think it’s also available for cheaper on Revolve!

  99. jaclyn says...

Um…DUH. The black one. The white one you wore a similar version to the Standard Hotel (I remember bc I love that dress). The red velvet one is AWESOME and you should buy that one too (save it for a Christmas date?)…but an anniversary? BLACK ONE. Red lips. Maybe buy some new spicy perfume and get a pedicure. Congratulations! <3 <3<3<3<3 <3

    • Hillary F. says...

I was going to say the same thing. #3 looks like that dress she already has :) You can tell we are big fans.

    • Sophie says...

Yes, the velvet one is perfect for Christmastime. Might be a tad too hot on a New York summer night.

  100. Trisha says...

I love the velvet! But I love velvet and that deep red! You’d rock any of them though :-)
I wish I had a go to for dates, but I change my style so much, it just depends on the day!
    Happy Anniversary!

  101. Mary says...

I have been married 44 years. I regret not wearing things that were more youthful and skin bearing when I could. I have reached the age of “cover that s— up”. You can wear the first two at home. Pick the black, red or white. Have fun!

    • CJ says...

Mary I was cracking up at your comment. It’s true, embrace the now!!

  102. Katherine says...

Oh I like them all! But I especially love the black one…it looks like what kid-me imagined a grown-up lady would wear, and honestly sometimes the best outfits are the ones that impress my inner eight year old.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

omg i love that litmus test, katherine!

  103. Jody says...

#1! It reminds me of that Jerry Maguire quote, “that’s more than a dress, that’s an Audrey Hepburn movie.”

  104. Suzie says...

Happy Anniversary to you and Alex! And that sexy spaghetti strap for sure!

  105. Alice says...

100% the black dress, an LBD is the woman’s equivalent of a well fit suit

  106. Caro says...

The black or burgundy one would suit you very well. I find these tighter, longer dresses so much more flattering, sophisticated and sexy than the wide/’girly’ ones. I have to admit that I find those very short & wide dresses a bit too ‘childish’ for a beautiful woman in her best years!

  107. Kay says...

    Definitely the first one, Jo!!
For me, scent is the #1 thing that makes me feel sexy. I like to shower, apply almond oil all over when my skin is still a little damp, and use Nuxe dry oil on my arms and décolletage. If I’m feeling fancy, I like to spritz on Hot Couture by Givenchy.
As for clothes, nothing makes me feel more femme and vivacious than a backless dress (this is also a new discovery for me: being busty and backless/braless can work great if the dress is flowy!)!

    • Kay says...

      PS: HAPPY ANNIVERSARY

  108. Boni says...

The white one…but in black. 😎

  109. Kelly says...

I love the fun and flirty hem of the first dress plus you really can’t go wrong with a lbd, but the second one definitely has a certain wow factor! You’ll look stunning in whatever you choose!

  110. Kat says...

    Congrats!!

I vote the Reformation dress BUT in red- so pretty!! Hope you two have a wonderful time!

  111. Silvina says...

    Number 1 or number 3.

Number 2 reminds me of an armchair.

    Happy aniversary!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

hahahaha people are very torn on the red!

    • aga says...

      armchair at Christmas time!

  112. LBD

  113. Red. Black is a bit too obvious. Plus you can wear it at Christmas with shawl/scarf/Cardigan.

  114. I love the velvet!!

  115. Congratulations! I vote the burgundy number as well :)

  116. Kate says...

I love the first dress (mostly for the name–who doesn’t want to wear a dress named Moxie? And it takes a lot of moxie to get to an 8th wedding anniversary :D) It’s sexy but still very classy.

    Happy anniversary!

The first one, without a doubt! You would look great in it!

The velvet one remind me of dresses from my childhood (especially with the tie bow in the back).

  118. Laura S says...

    Black!

  119. Sonja says...

I’m pretty sure you wore a white dress very similar to that third one. I remember it because I loved it so! But, black. Sexy, understated, leaves all the right things to the imagination. Congrats!

    • MB says...

Thank gosh someone else mentioned this. I felt like such a weirdo for remembering this–I hardly remember what’s in my own closet!

    • Sonja says...

MB, we can be weirdo together.

Joanna – Then black AND white. :)

    • Sasha says...

Joanna, that white Dress you previously wore is so beautiful. It’s like a work of art. Could you dye it?

    • Joanna Goddard says...

that’s actually such a great idea. i might try!

  120. Jane says...

Little black dress for sure! It’s so sexy. I’m totally into a relaxed oversized dresses look all the time as well, so I bet this will be such a fun sexy way to make the night feel special. It’s also so classic and classy.

  121. Shay says...

Velvet… in August? It’s still summer! I vote for #1 all the way. Looks like it comes in a lovely red too :)

  122. Laura says...

Love the burgundy velvet. My body type won’t fit into anything described as “pencil,” but that black dress is very sophisticated. Don’t care for the white dress – too girlish.

  123. Maywyn says...

    Happy Anniversary!

Anniversary is time for cleavage, whatever you can manage, get it up there. If not, then go for the backless dress.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

“whatever you can manage, get it up there” = hahaha, love it :)

  124. Christina says...

Black! So sexy and chic. More importantly, maybe a little something fun for underneath?! I always feel sexier and flirtier when I’m all the way “dressed up”. Happy anniversary to you two lovebirds! Have so much fun!

    • Christina says...

Also, if you have time, find a blow dry bar for a blowout! Finish getting ready there, have a glass of champagne, and have Alex pick you up there for your date. You will feel so pampered and special!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

that’s a cute idea, christina! thank you :)

    • CJ says...

Oh I just had a Pretty Woman throwback moment….you could meet him at the restaurant looking absolutely smashing. Hmmmm, I think yes.

  125. ginny says...

Burgundy velvet! but all of them are beautiful.

  126. Sarah K says...

I vote for velvet! The black is very sexy and the white is darling, but the red just seems extra special to me. And it doesn’t look especially 90s to me–but if it did that wouldn’t be a bad thing, since the 90s are back in a big way, right?!

Happy anniversary! And please post pics of what you choose. :)

  127. Celeste says...

Ooh the black one or the white one! The velvet is a little too Christmas for me. Soak up the last few days of summer. Congratulations!

  128. Kelsey says...

Red velvet for the win! The white one is pretty, but it looks like one we’ve already seen you in from awhile back. And the black is just a tad too ’90’s, (Hello Parent Trap boat scene) but hey, the 90’s are back.

  129. aga says...

Love the first look! The dress, the heels and the jewelry are so sexy!!!

Happy anniversary! You guys seem like the sweetest couple! :)

  130. Get the one from the reformation! Be advised, they always hit longer on me than the models and I’m 5’8″! I bought a dress from them to try to make our honeymoon a bit dressier and it was a great choice.

  131. Sally says...

Youd look pretty in any of them – great choices. Happy Anniversary.

  132. molly says...

i vote for either black or white, i am trying to squeeze wearing white summer dresses for as long as possible.

  133. Jennifer says...

Black – sexy and has lots or re-wear potential!

    • Alex says...

      Yep. Exactly.

  134. Rachel Simmons says...

Happy Anniversary!!! I’m so loving the burgundy velvet number! Rock it!

  135. Rebecca says...

I love the velvet dress. It looks confident and elegant, definitely special occasion worthy! The color is gorgeous, too. Happy anniversary! My husband and I will also celebrate 8 years this October. :)

  136. Melanie says...

Velvet burgundy! Classy, sexy, great color on you!!
    Happy anniversary!

  137. Meg says...

Isn’t it too early in the season for velvet? and what are these things you call “dates?” (been married 16 years and rarely get that night out!! i vote for the one you’ll wear more than once–black midi!)

    • Sasha says...

      I’m laughing!!

I too am confused at this “date” word. 21 years married in July :) My husband actually confided this weekend that he wouldn’t mind, maybe, leaving the house once in a while with me, you know, to eat, or something.

  138. Tricia M says...

Yes, I too am going with the red velvet, so warm and tactile. It reminds me of a lovely red rose!

  139. Sandra says...

I vote for #1 or #3….the burgundy velvet looks like a bridesmaid dress I would have worn in the late 1990s. I’m sure it would look great on you, but I like #1 and #3 a lot more.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

hahaha good to note! thank you!!

    • Heather says...

I was also thinking it was reminiscent of 90’s era Winona Ryder – but I actually think that’s a GOOD thing.

The burgundy dress also seems like such a fun departure from the typical looks you post. I feel like you may already have something like #1 or #3.

  140. Liza says...

    The black is sexiest imho

  141. Jen says...

I vote for the black dress! Can’t beat a good lbd!

As for me: heels, wavy hair, darker lips and something fitted since I’m usually in very floaty clothes.

Congrats and have some much fun!!

  142. Emmanuella says...

It took my boyfriend four years to muster up the courage and tell me he hates the feeling of velvet. When I asked him why he didn’t tell me sooner, he said that he didn’t want to disappoint me because he knows I love velvet. Because I had to see to believe, I grabbed my favorite silk velvet skirt from my closet (my special date night skirt) and had him run his hand over it. I saw a man squirm and shiver as if I was torturing him. All these years I had no idea that my special date night clothing was his nightmare. Haha.

Maybe this time you can switch things up (unless it’s the norm for you) and ask Alex which outfit he likes.

    • Sasha says...

Tortured with velvet!!!! Poor guy ;)

  143. Meg says...

Today is also our 8th wedding anniversary! Happy anniversary! (I vote the burgundy velvet.)

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      happy anniversary, meg!

  144. Amanda G says...

I vote the burgundy velvet all the way! Plus, I love how it’s super sexy from the front but cute and playful in the back with the bow :) Happy Anniversary!

  145. Madie says...

The red velvet, for sure! I think it would really suit you :)
