What are you up to this weekend? I just got my haircut at Sara June, a little gem in Brooklyn. (I saw Marly.) It always feels so, so good to have a new cut. We’re also going to The Moth tonight, and I’m looking forward to hearing people’s fun stories. Have a good one, and here are a few fun links from around the web…

I have suffered from depression for as long as I can remember, and have been taking Prozac for 5 years now. Because this medication helps me, I have been told I am weak and buying into the evil pharmaceutical giants. Of course healthy eating, exercise, and therapy can do wonders to elevate ones mood and/or alleviate certain neurosis, but that does not make medication evil or unnecessary! Those who suffer from mental illness do not need to feel weak or guilty on top of everything else they endure because they are taking medications. So I thank you for posting this link Jo!

I go to Marly at Sara June too!!! I discovered her about a year ago and she has absolutely changed my hair game. Highly, highly, highly recommend her if you live in BK!

as an art teacher, i always had my students do that quiz to see if they’re right brained or left brained. much of my course was using the book drawing on the right side of the brain. anyone can learn to use the right side of their brain.

The Onion article: I went to college in Lynchburg VA and lived on Main St. in downtown across from the farmers market and in all reality the farmers market is awesome (Raw milk cow shares!!! They are illegal here in Baton Rouge where I live now. And I so miss the local CSA!) and I have to say Rivermont Pizza (the wood fire pizza restaurant in Lynchburg) is the best pizza I have ever had. Lol. I kinda have to agree with mom on this particular hometown making moves in the right direction.

Thanks for sharing the post about 35 reasons people take psychotropic medications. I work in the mental health field and I appreciate people that bring awareness to the stigma that still exists surrounding mental illess, because it may make it easier for people that do suffer from mental illness to seek help. And I just plan appreciate you and your blog. So much.

That sleep book may work if you can get your child to read it! I have a 3 year old (that LOVES books!) but he will not pay attention to this one book! He talks through it, asks tons of questions. My husband and I laugh at the irony of it!

Loved the untranslatable words and the reasons for medications. In a way they go hand in hand with people trying to understand an emotion or something that cannot be verbally explained in a language they will never truly understand.

My favorite bedtime story for Luna is I love you Forever. I like singing the song and I can tell in her little face when she is really taking it all in (or maybe she notices my emotions).

Ahhh the damn Rabbit sleep book is taunting me! We got it but our daughter is still young and sort of in the board book phase so she always tries to tear the pages and it becomes more of a “…blah blah blah SLEEP NOW wait no not the page don’t tear the page oh wait honey no this isn’t a thick book we have to be careful!” I’m awaiting the day that I can actually use it and it will actually work!

A lot of those “untranslateable” words are not untranslatable, they are just untranslatable to English. They also used the word forelsket incorrectly. “I was overpowered by forelskelse as our fingers enlaced…” would be correct however. Schadenfreude is translatable to all the Nordic languages. If you want other words, look up Lagom, Hygge, Gezellig! (Swedish, Danish, Dutch)

The Rabbit Who wants to fall asleep is great but I highly recommend the audiobook. I play the CD for my kids every night, it includes little chimes and sounds that I think help. Be careful though, It will put you to sleep as well!

I second the audiobook! Way too long and boring to read yourself. It did work for my youngest (3 year old) for awhile but we stopped using it because my kids started to wail, “Nooooo! Not Roger Rabbit!!!!” at bedtime. Ha!

That book works almost every time for my daughter. I think the weird cadence is rooted in hypnosis. The book tells the reader to emphasize phrases like “sleep now” over and over again, and also tells you to yawn while reading it. The combination of hypnosis and boring story worked at my house, although my daughter would never choose it for story time.

This is going to sound so silly, but it drives me bananas when people complain that Rose let go after promising not to. She wasn’t speaking of never literally letting go she was speaking of never letting go of the promise to live her life and die an old woman…. but yes, he could have totally fit on the raft!

Ha. I forwarded this to my husband and his brother and my sister-in-law. His mom is ALWAYS trying to drop subtle hints about how fantastic their city is, hoping that we’ll move “home” to Boston, although there’s no way that after 9 years we’re all leaving San Francisco.

I’m surprised that Brooklyn hair salon pricing is almost identical to Capitol Hill (DC). I hate how much i spend (cut + partial highlights) so I try to only go 3-4 times a year. But, yes, it’s such a great feeling to walk out with new hair!

Sexist pricing too! I refuse to go to salons that charge men and women differently by default. Charge by time or stylist, but don´t set the price based only on my gender.

Same here. I am on medication for depression/anxiety and it makes me MYSELF. medication can be an amazing (and lifesaving) thing when used in the right way. Thanks for the article!!!

I was so unimpressed with “The Rabbit Who Wants to go to Sleep”. It is crazy long – like 20 to 25 minutes to read. It also has awkward sentence structure, which I hate when I’m reading out loud. My 3 year-old was really bored and while she said she was tired when we were done, I don’t think the book helped much.

This book works as a CHARM on every kid I have read it to! (4 different kids) Its not an exciting story – thats kind of the point.
