Have you seen this video by dialect coach Andrew Jack? He gives a tour of Great Britain and Ireland and shows how different the regional accents are. Really fun to watch!
P.S. What British people say versus what they really mean.

I love everything Irish from the accents, to the men and even the symbolic meaning behind their traditional jewelry. https://www.theirishjewelrycompany.com

I love it! So so funy!!! And of course Dublin accent sounds poetic :)
eKim, Southern Ireland (the Republic) is not part of Britain. Northern Ireland is, although many Northern Irish would probably not consider themselves British in the same way that may Scots do not consider themselves British either. Even though Scotland is part of GB, I would always identify myself as ‘Scottish’ rather than British.
It was called Britain before Scotland ( a made up name)
Funny video! Amazing how he moves from one to another so easily. I have a proper London accent but not a cockney accent like he did. More like the Queen’s English :)
Ireland is not part of GB however I’ve heard soneone who is from Northern Ireland say he was legally considered British although many will take offense in that. I know Northern Ireland is part of the UK but what confusing to me is that they’re considered British despite not being part of GB.
Perhaps they meant they’re British subjects? I believe any citizen of the Commonwealth realm is regarded as a British subject.
OK, Dorsett was soooo Hagrid from Harry Potter-esque!
My husband and I are going to Scotland for two weeks this summer and I’m SO excited for everything, but the accents are definitely something I’m looking forward to!
I love this– my husband and I watch ALOT of british television… I mean ALOT! We’re always trying to place the different accents. We can hear them, but we don’t know the territory well enough to pinpoint where they’re from.
There’s also this video of Jimmy Carr doing accents on The Graham Norton Show.

And I agree with Lula, his Glasgow accent didn’t sound very Glaswegian! And his Liverpool was a little off (just think Beatles!) What was interesting though was that the Dorset and Somerset accent sounded EXACTLY like Hagrid from Harry Potter! Pretty cool considering Robbie Coltrane is Scottish- great accent. :)
Love this! I’m from Toronto and I did an exchange to Edinburgh, Scotland in 2010 and had several British kids in my class. It was really interesting to hear and learn about the different dialects in the English accent (Birmingham, Newcastle and Manchester.) But of course I’m still such a sucker for a proper Dublin accent, like Colin Farrell and Glen Hansard. Sigh! <3
Ireland is not Britain.
Very proud of my Lancashire accent! I live in Canada now and get comments about my accent all the time!
Thank you for changing the title Joanna, I appreciate your taking the time to do so.
such a fun subject to think about; I loved listening to the clip but oh alas, there was no Geordie (Northumberland/North East) which is my top favourite accent in the whole world!
Thanks very much for posting this. Best wishes
oh yes, of course i know that ireland is not Britain, i just shortened the post title for SEO purposes:) (and then i have the full video description in the post.) but i’ll change now!
Heheh, I have always loved their accent.
Whaaaaat we don’t speak like that in Yorkshire! Nice try mate!
I’m an American living in Yorkshire, and my accent can become very Yorkshire-ish at times! X
Love that! Would be great to see it done of the American South…Louisiana vs. the Carolinas vs. Georgia, etc.
My husband is from Essex in the South East, but luckily he never had, what is considered to be in the UK, the awful accent of the region. He’s actually got a really sexy, non-posh accent. I love it.
I’m traveling to Scotland soon and this was so interesting! A bit nerve cracking since I’m a bit worried I won’t understand a WORD they are saying, but this was helpful! :D
These are all surprisingly accurate, except the Glasgow accent! Sounds much more like Edinburgh to me (from a Glaswegian).
Also agree with Fiona…republic of Ireland is not Britain!

Just goes to prove that there is no such thing as a British accent. We tend to refer to ourselves as English or Scots or Welsh or from Northern Ireland. Speak British makes no sense linguistically or culturally. I’m predominantly southern with a Yorkshire father and a south London mother. Who knows what my accent is?!
The what British people say bit REALLY made me laugh. It is totally true. That is exactly what we mean when we say those things! How funny!! ;)
Haha, amazing! As a Brit, these are surprisingly accurate!

My husband is from Yorkshire and I’m American but when we lived in England I developed a Cumbrian accent (we lived in the Lake District in northern England) wish I still had it, it made people smile. It sounds very warm and not at all “posh” :)
Hi. Nice video! Just a friendly FYI. Dublin would be an Irish accent, not British. :)

Wow! I never knew I had a ‘British accent’?? Being from Dublin…which is in the ‘Republic of Ireland’!!! Suggested title change, perhaps? (& some Geography & History lessons?).
Hey you will love this video: The girl is from Finland (and so am I) and she speaks gibberish in several language! =) She was on Elle DeGeneres -tv show as well. :)
Love it!
Ha ha! This is great.
i loved that! especially that the last line was “welsh people even sound a little bit drunk.” haha.
Being an Aussie having lived in the UK for 4 years I hear myself with a bit of a British twang now so this just cracked me up! I LOVED the South of Wales one, where people just sound drunk! Definitely not Aussie Drunk!!! xx
I love Brits, it’s true — but I have to say, a deep southern accent shouldn’t go overlooked either1 It’s just the foreign aspect that is so exciting! hehe
To all my American family I sound English… to all new English acquaintances, they (politely) guess Canadian – apparently it’s rude to call someone American, when they aren’t! ;-)
I saw this recently and loved it! It’s so fun, and amazing how different it all can be!
This guy is amazing!! Years ago I visited London and Poole, and found that once I had a handle on the accent I’d meet someone with a totally different dialect and I wouldn’t understand a word for a few sentences. Loved this video, thanks!
Brilliant video! I have a Yorkshire accent but not as strong as the one in the video :)
One think I love about being British is being able to drive 30 minutes and hearing a completely different accent! I have family at the opposite end of the same county who speak completely differently to me.
I’m British and have a northern accent. But I’d love a West Country accent, it’s ‘gert lush’.
