Awesome Shades

One final post about our place before you’re totally sick of it! :) A few people asked about the window treatments, and they’re really really awesome. The apartment had old blinds when we moved in, and we were nervous about the cords with the boys. So we got shades from Decorview, which Emily knew about–they basically come to your place, measure everything, help you pick out colors and textures, and then come back and install it all. It’s so easy. And the coolest part is that they’re motorized!!! You just press a button on the wall—or a remote!

Here’s a video we took with the boys in the morning, where Toby is basically speaking a different language the entire time. Haha, three year olds:)

P.S. Toby talking about Indian food, and becoming a New Yorker.

  1. Oh thats a nice blog about Window Blinds Cleaning which i had ever read. Thanks to share such type of blog with us.Your way of writing is really apppreciable.I would like to continue with your blog.

  2. Amazing shades. I wonder though, they’re such an investment to put into a place you’re renting, do you plan to take them with you and use them in your next home? Hard for me to invest so much into blinds if I don’t know whether they’ll fit the windows of my next place. I’d love your opinion on this.

  4. Babies and Kids are blessing, I am happy to read that you found the right Window Treatment for your Home.

  5. Beautiful kids, Joanna. I have been following you for ages but never comment. Well, i have to start today to say this. Love your easy going attitude. I have 3 year old as well and she never stops just like Toby. Very cute. Thank you for sharing.

  6. Those shades are amazing — anyone with small children knows that a home with great light is a double-edged sword unless you are armed with blackout shades!

And while it’s lovely to hear you, my favorite part is seeing Toby be a hilarious and totally spazzed-out kid. We usually see pictures of him still and thoughtful, and it’s easy to forget he’s an energetic, rough-and-tumble kid, just like all the rest of them.

  7. I was cracking up at this video of Toby. My almost three year old (in February) does the same goofy gibberish speak and dancing when he gets wound up. Especially if I’m trying to take a video of him then he really starts to ham it up then. Made me smile!

  8. Love this blog Joanna! I totally relate to your different interests and I love that even though there are many posts on being a mom, there are tons of other things too! I feel a little more like myself when I read your posts. Plus, jealous of your apt!

    Following you from Madrid,

    Claudia

  9. My guess is Toby’s saying, “Anty’s head! Anty’s head!”

    Might be wishful listening though.

  10. Hee. I think Toby’s saying, “Anty’s head! Anty’s head!” Maybe that’s just wishful listening.

ps: your voice… sounds like I thought? not a shock, anyway! whatever that’s worth!

  11. Toby is hilarious! Thanks for sharing. (The shades look great, too — whole apartment looks amazing!)

  12. What a treat to be able to see these two in action! I love how chill Anton is and how much happy energy Toby has, they seem like great boys!

  13. It is totally adorable when Anton talks to Toby as the shade goes down, and watches Toby moving around. It would be wonderful to know what Anton is saying to Toby.

Reading Friday’s post Anton laughs to Toby tells it all…little brother is bonding with big brother.

  14. I love his moves! Those shades are awesome!

  15. Haha Anton has that “this guy is crazy!” look on his sweet face. And Toby’s little dance in the end was just awesome! But what I really admired from this video was how laid-back you were with all the dancing and jumping around the baby! I have to say I was thinking “the baby’s head the baby’s head the baby’s head” all the time, but you were just aware and relaxed about it. I guess that’s something a second child teaches us, right?

Love your blog, reading it almost every day from Brazil!

  16. Oh, your voice is so sweet and warm… so neat to hear it :) And Toby’s such a happy boy!(I was dying over Anton’s “whoa, easy now, big brother.” side-eye toward the end of the video when Toby was stepping all around him. Very funny stuff.)

  17. thanks for these really sweet comments :)

  18. I love the way Anton watches Toby with confidence and curiousity. Wonderful!

  19. Long time reader, 1st time commenter….

A – shades are awesome – I’m moving from the lower east side to brooklyn on the 1st and I think these are a must!

B – I loved hearing your voice. It was really heart-warming to hear after following your blog for so many many years….like talking to a pen pal on the phone after years of letter writing.

C – those boys are precious. It sounds like Toby is saying “Anty’s head” over and over again after you said not to step on Anton’s head. Cute! They are such sweeties.

    Thank you for sharing!!!

  20. Where are Anton’s adorable PJ’s from? I want to get some for my little guy!

    Thanks!

  21. Oh my Gosh! Toby is hilarious and adorable! I love 3 year olds! So funny! Anton is just looking up at his big brother with so much admiration. Beautiful!

Great hint on the shades. So hard to find attractive and utilitarian shades. Thank for sharing!

  22. This is beyond great. What sweet boys! Toby is just the cutest. His different language reminds me of my three year old. Love the blinds too! Beautiful apartment!

  23. First of all, I would NEVER wake up (or want to get up) with those shades! Amazing. Second of all, I think Toby is really enjoying his new “big boy” bed! And third of all, you have a lovely voice, Jo! Which may sound weird, but it’s always interesting hearing blogger’s voices for the first time, when you’re so used to “hearing from them” in writing. :)

  24. thanks for these cute comments. haha, that’s funny that my voice sounds different—i’m curious what you thought it would sound like:) and meredith, toby did just get a haircut—from me, while he was in the bath with a lollipop!

  25. Your voice is nothing like I expected! I’m not really sure what I expected to hear though. Oh, and Toby was giving me a heart attack. The straddle cracked me up though. Such a boy thing to do!

  26. My parents live in a crazy glass box of an apartment on the UES and they have these shades. THEY ARE WONDERFUL!

  27. Thank you for the awesome apartment tour! Love what you’ve done and that Emily is a genius!

  28. so cute! And super cool shades. And, for some reason, your voice sounds so different than the one I imagined in my head when I read your work! So funny how that happens. :)

  29. Hilarious and adorable. The shades are fabulous, too :)

  30. The shades are great, but your kids take center stage and they are adorable! Enjoy your new place, it’s lovely.

  31. THANK YOU! For sharing this company! I have wondered/worried about shades and window treatments as we begin the house hunting search and this seems like a perfect solution!

  32. Keep taking videos of Toby and Anton! :) My sister and I are similar to the age gap of Toby and Anton and my mom took similar videos of us playing on the bed all the time. Growing up we LOVED spending a lazy Saturday afternoon watching our baby/toddler videos. (I still get teased by some of my antics I did to my younger sister) Appears like you are doing a great job documenting lovely, crazy, fun moments for your children to look back and remember!

  33. Just watched the video with my two and a half year old son and he was like ‘who’s that mummy? ‘ I said that they were the children of a lady who writes stories and he said ‘Toby be my friend?’ – so cute! How lush to be a mum to boys xxx

  34. I started following you about one and a half year ago and I think the same as other commenters here, it was lovely to hear your voice and was different than I expected! Very sweet and warming. Seeing your children in action was funny too :)

  35. Lovely! Are they deliverng outside US? I’ll go and check ;)

  36. Aww that’s the sweetest! Your new place looks so bright and happy!

  37. Those shades ARE awesome. They remind me of the window treatments they have in Europe that cover the window from the outside and make the room super dark as well.

Toby is such a comedian, I too was thinking “oh dear god, the baby’s head!” and then you moved closer to Anton. You seem like such a sweet mama, letting Toby be silly while quietly shielding Anton’s head. :)

It is nice to hear your voice, you should do it more often. So much is conveyed in a person’s tone that is lost in type. Thanks for sharing your makeover, it’s all amazing. I love everything.

  38. Thanks for that sweet little snippet! I vote for more adorable videos of your dancing boy :-)

  39. I’m glad other people have posted about hearing your voice! It was different than I expected too! How funny!

  40. no, really, toby! be careful of the baby!!

  41. I just realized I have never heard your voice before after reading your blog for 2.5 years. So strange because it was completely different then I would have thought it would sound.

  42. whoa..cool…blinds, now I’m thinking about investing to get mine done sooner…and I love the video…like another poster, I kept thinking to myself ‘Careful, Toby, baby Anton is right there!!!’ :D
Toby is such a cutie pie, he totally cracks me up and Anton is so adorable! I can’t gush enough watching your children <3

Thank you for sharing your home makeover. While we probably can’t afford many of the pieces right now, but it’s very inspirational.
I think I can definitely apply some of the style and achieve it at home. Thanks again, Joanna!

  43. I find it very funny how night and day Toby and Anton are in this video :)

  45. your voice is so much softer than expected!

ps.. your boys are perfect. xoxo

  46. Great window treatments and precious, gorgeous kids. That’s what i call perfection.

  47. I’ve been following your blog for so long that I feel like we’re now friends!! So I have to say, it was strange to hear your voice – I can really hear the Michigan accent!! Although, I’m from Tennessee and now live in Texas, so I always catch a northern accent. Your boys are just precious, I love reading about all the crazy things that little Toby says!! :)

    BTW those shades ARE awesome!!

  48. I’ve been following your blog for 4 years now (you were the first blogger I followed!), and I feel like we’re now friends! But I have to say, it was strange to hear your voice on the video!! I’m from Tennessee (and now live in Texas) so I’m sure that’s why the Michigan accent stands out for me. :) Your boys are so precious, I just love to read about little Toby and the things he says!!

    BTW those shades ARE awesome!

  49. Great post. Like everyone else that commented, loved hearing your voice and seeing the boys…more cute videos!

I was worried about Anton’s head too, but kid’s they get banged up in process. :P

  50. Ha – Toby is so much A BIG BROTHER (that has just received HIS baby).
    your voice…strange but nice:-)

  51. I’ve been reading your blog for such a long time (all the way from Brazil) and it’s so nice to hear your voice and see the boys. You have a beautiful family and Cup of Jo is one of my favorite blogs ! Thanks for the video!

  52. Oh my god, the jig he did in the last seconds of the video. Was he saying ‘antiseptic’? He is awesome!

  53. I haven’t heard your voice before – it’s different than I imagined lol. It’s very friendly (not that I thought you sounded unfriendly). I’ve been reading your blog since the Glamour days.

  54. jm says...

so cute of Toby dancing and Anton watching him with great aplomb!

  55. Love those blinds. Clean and minimalist. And just realized how strange/surreal it is to hear your voice for the first time after so many years of reading your blog!

  56. So cute! Is that your voice from behind the camera? It’s totally different than I was expecting! But also cute. :)

  57. Those blinds are great! I wonder if you have some sort of child proofing for the window? I have been looking for something and wonder if you have any ideas.

  58. i love how anton just lies there and straight chills.

  59. They are so cute! I love Toby’s dancing. And those shades are so cool!

  60. Awesome shades, but they were definitely upstaged by your adorable children!

  61. Awesome shades, but they were definitely upstaged by your adorable children!

  62. Your whole apartment makeover is beautiful! It turned out so well.

I especially like what you did with the windows, and how you could hide the shades behind the little molding-type barrier up at the top.

My rental last year had the same floors and similar huge windows with the ugliest, grossest blinds. I wanted curtains so bad but the walls surrounding the 9-foot-long windows were so awkward that I could never figure out a way to install a curtain rod! I guess the answer would have been to hire professionals! ;)

  63. AO says...

Those shades are amazing. The boys are so adorable, too.

  64. What an investment! Who knows, maybe you guys will get to stay there longer than one year ;)

  65. I like how Toby stands up ON the bed instead of getting OUT of bed (and onto the floor)… must still think he’s in the crib ;)

  66. Hi Joanna! It’s very funny to hear your voice for the first time! I’ve been reading you several years and feel like I know but never heard you speak!

Congratulations on your new home … is really beautiful.

  67. Great demo!

  68. Those are amazing & your boys are too cute!

  69. Those shades are seriously amazing & your boys are too cute! They’re not kidding when they say black-out.

  71. Did he just get a haircut recently? He suddenly looks so grown up!

  72. So cute! It’s fun to hear your voice, too.

  73. Nice and practical! And so nice to see a video! I love that room. The pictures on the wall above Toby’s bed are so cool, I really want to do something similar in my boy’s room.

    Thanks!
    Hanne

  74. Toby cracks me up in this! The whole time I’m thinking CAREFUL OF THE BABY’S HEAD!! Then he just straddles the guy. Haha!

  75. Awww! <3
