Do You Still Like Beards?

When Alex accidentally grew a beard five years ago (he had the flu), I told him he looked rugged and handsome. Surprised, he said I was the only woman he knew who actually liked beards. But since then, beards have blown up in a huge way. For the past few years, it has seemed as if every guy—famous or otherwise—has grown a beard. Do you agree?

But last week, the Guardian ran an article asking, “Have we reached peak beard?” Apparently, they have gone mainstream and now might be on the wane.

So, I’m curious: Do you still like beards? Are you sick of them? Do you just want to see a guy’s actual face for once? I’m still a super fan. Over the past five years, Alex has sometimes considered shaving, but I insist he never does!

P.S. Before and after.

  1. Totally #TeamBeards. Especially in a city like NYC where men can be so manicured and pretty, it’s nice to see a man look like a MAN-MAN. I always prefer my fiance with at least a few days scruff, if not a full beard.

  2. I love beards…That man in the post’s picture is exactly why :-) it looks great on him.

  3. Love them.

  4. Tell him not to get rid of it he looks very very handsome ;) (I love your pic in parenting Mexico & all the posts I have just discovered) All ready following your blog ;)

  5. Love them! I have seen my husband clean shaven one time in the nearly eight years we have been together and it was WEIRD. I much prefer the beard, and I have come to realize that the men I find most attractive have beards.

  6. beards will always be a weakness for me. my husband has had some sort of facial hair (except for one mistake for a month) during the entirety of our 5+ years together.
    beards forever!!!!

  7. I looooove my husband’s beard. I actually have called him “the husbeard” for the past three years, and it has caught on to the point that people who don’t know him personally will still come up and say, “hello husbeard!” I’m with some of the other readers, in that I never really thought much about beards until my husband grew one, and now I find tall, dark-haired, bearded men extra attractive!

  8. Beards are absolute magic, and I will be forever grateful that my husband has one and I no longer have to worry about kissing a stubbly, scratchy face. A well grown beard is hands down the sexiest feature a man can have.

  9. Depends on the face! I think my hubby would look handsome with a beard, but alas, he can never grow one. His scruff always comes in patchy… :D Alex looks great with a beard!

  10. I refuse to let my husband shave his beard. I LOVE HIS BEARD!

  11. Yes, beards forever!

  12. My husband has a beard and shoulder-length hair, which he frequently wears in a ponytail or man-bun. I love it. The beard makes him look serious and distinguished, in spite of his non-traditional hairstyle.

  13. beards with a flannel = swoon … but then again my boyfriend and I are in Maine :)

  14. Beards forever. Love them.

Oh beards, they will always be the best. I think my husband’s beard is super sexy, luckily he is a beard man – he knows he works it :)

  16. I like beards but my husband does not like the itchy way his face feels while he is growing one, so I only ever get him with scruff. I think I like them because my dad usually had one… I have a great picture of my dad and two uncles in the 1970’s, all with beards and hideous(ly awesome) shirts.

  17. I guess I’ve commented before that I liked beards. I got my boyfriend to wear it and still love it! And he still wears it! :)

  18. I love a beard! My husband and I met in the military, so he wasn’t allowed to have a beard. The first time I saw him with a beard was when we were dating. He was on leave for a month to visit his family in Europe. I went to the airport to pick him up. I can vividly remember him walking up to me with a full beard. My heart skipped a beat because he looked so handsome! We are both out of the military now, so he maintains a short well groomed beard. I still love it.

  19. Beards earn two big thumbs up from me!

  20. SJ says...

I definitely think it depends on the man. When I was in marching band in college, some of the guys would grow beards when the weather turned cold, and that right there showed me beards are NOT for everyone. Some men can handle being scruffed up; some men are already haggard (like Zack Galifinakis) and MUST SHAVE NOW. If a beard makes you look in any way homeless or down on your luck, then ya just can’t rock it. Sorry, but I feel strongly about this. Maybe I’ll blog about it. :)

  21. I never thought I would…until I met my husband! After a cycling accident left a large scar on his chin, he couldn’t imagine scraping a razor over it, so grew a beard! I’ve seen pictures of him without his beard, and he is almost unrecognizable! Love my husband and his beard!

  22. I’m a beard lover! I like a full beard on man :-)

  23. I’m such a huge fan of beards (not too long though!). When we go on vacation I always beg my husband to grow his out…so sexy!

  24. Beards are sexy! There is something so manly about them. I hate it when my husband shaves his off, he looks so strange and quite a bit older.

When I was 22 my Dad for the first time in my life shaved his beard for Worlds Greatest Shave to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation and when he walked in the house I thought a stranger was in the house. Freaked me right out!

  25. I love them too. Short ones provide nice chin definition. And movie stars always look so much more handsome with them. It separates the men from the boys.

  26. I hate when my boyfriend shaves off his beard but there’s no nice way to tell him… So I live with his bald face until he decides to grow it out again.

Which I’m currently doing at the moment.

    :(

  27. LOVE beards – always have, always will! I won’t let my man shave ;)

  28. I’ve always liked facial hair, but the last few years I’ve been LOVING full beards. There’s just something about them…

  29. i like beards too. my husband just elected to trim is way down because he’s training for a triathlon and it gets in the way swimming. it makes me sad. i really like the full beard – especially on him.

  30. Nothing sexier than a full beard

  32. I am definitely not a fan of facial hair. What is the man hiding? A nonexistent chin? Bad skin? Is he just lazy?

I read a magazine piece about facial hair. Several men were asked to comb their beards, etc. over a large piece of paper that went off to a lab. All manner of things were trapped in the whiskers—spider legs, insect bits, pieces of food, dirt/dust, pollen, etc. And these were not sloppy men. Their exceedingly neat (save for facial hair) visages appeared above the debris found in their whiskers. Apparently beards are like dusters. Yuck!

  33. I’m from Oregon, where beards always have been and always will be in style. Love em.

  34. Always loved beards… my husband has one and strangely, with it he looks handsome, but when he has shaved it off, his face looks so much like his mother’s that it’s a huge turn-off. Terrible, right?!!! Not that anything’s wrong with his mom, it’s just… yikes!

  35. I hate beards, but Alex may change my mind. The links to the old posts were awesomely sweet. (Yes, I am aware I sound like I am 13, but they were a very refreshing display of pure love)

  36. My husband is from France and he loves to have a shadow. I don’t know if it’s a European thing, but all his friends keep a shadow as well. He looks nice with it but I don’t think he could pull a full on beard.

  37. I love Alex with the beard too!

  38. j. says...

I wouldn’t recognize him without his beard, it is part of him. And because it is part of him, I love it. So long live the beard!

  39. My husband has a beard every winter. His parents aren’t really into it, but they like that I am.

  40. I like my hubby with a beard when he keeps it all neat and trimmed up. I find a goatee on him particularly attractive though. Over the last 20 years I’ve seen him in pretty much every stage of shaven and unshaven and I always love a bit of facial hair on him.

  41. No way! I work at a large academic hospital in Boston, and we are doing a trial on how many germs live in beards!

  42. Well, I think my husband looks smokin’ hot with a beard, so yes. But not every man can pull it off. My brothers look silly if they try to grow beards– all scraggly and goat-like. They’re much more handsome clean shaven. :) So it depends.

Oh I definitely still love beards! my boyfriend also kind of accidentally grew one a few months ago and I went so nuts for it, he hasn’t shaved it since, to the chagrin of his grandmother, godmother and mother. they keep asking “so you really like him this way??” to which I reply with a firm “YES” which means “no, I’m not making him shave.

In the same vein, one of my best friends is a bearded guy. he loves his beard, but he had to shave it once, and when his girlfriend saw him beardless, she left the room and didn’t talk to him for a few hours.

Beards are still cool. I hope they’ll always be.

  45. Only if they are groomed properly. 5 o’clock shadow are my favorite.

    Happy Friday!

  46. My fiancé looks totally sexy with a beard!

  47. I am indeed a huge fan of beards. BUT my boss grew one recently and he’s a bit clean cut for a beard, I think so I guess it just doesn’t suit some people.

  48. Still love beards. I agree with you as far as Alex is concerned, I prefer him with a short beard. I can’t think of my husband withour a beard, he looks like Gregory House and I won’t want him to change for anything in the world. Go beards!!

  49. Beards are soooo sexy. Beards and forearms. :0 Oh, and perhaps a kilt too. :)

  50. Still love them!

  51. I’m in love with beards. Always was and always will be!

  52. I’ve always loved full beards, and I think my husband looks so good with one (and without). Unfortunately because of his job now he probably won’t grow one for a while.

  53. Full beards on men in their 20s look uniformly stupid, but less so than mustaches.
