Thumbs up for this rad Midwest T-shirt, which I’ve been wearing every weekend this summer. I’d like to bring it on our trip to Chicago, but can’t decide if that’s like wearing the concert T-shirt to the concert.
P.S. Midwestern dog.

Oh, Jo!
I love it, I do…
But,
I just noticed my sister wearing this shirt yesterday.
I shouldn’t be surprised…
She is, dare I say, hyper-smitten with Cup of Jo.
As in, she only seems to buy things you’ve featured.
It seems that every time I see her she is wearing or carrying something all too familiar.
I’ll admit it that at first I was a little freaked out by how she has physically tried to morph into you.
(yeah, that’s right, you two have the same glasses…)
We’re talking…
After she had her firstborn- months after Toby- she would constantly say “Toby has one of these!” as she picked through her diaper bag. Two years later, and she hasn’t missed a beat.
I had a dream once that I confided in you how worried I was with her obsession.
(Hey, thanks for being super calm with the news, dream Jo!)
I say all this to say,
We’re not from the mid-west.
She has never been to the mid-west.
I may have to have an intervention.
Swoop bags sent me and I have to say the Mixed Metal Bangle…love bangles, cuffs and bracelets!
My husband is from N. Dakota. I think I’ll get this for him as a late Father’s day Gift! Thanks for the idea.
Chicago people LOVE their town and we regularly wear/carry anything Chicago-y. Especially things with our city flag. Midwesterners we are, but we don’t necessarily identify as such since we’re urban city people (the people out in the suburbs do, though). But we also don’t really care enough about fashion as a whole (Milan, this is not). So no one will really even notice your shirt unless they like it. If you really own this shirt (and it’s not just an affiliate link you posted) and like it wear it with gusto, my friend.
I’d say no on this one but I say yes to going to the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Tour in Chicago and checking out the free summer concerts in the Park at the stage designed by Frank Gehry (not sure the name but we got to see the Dirty Projectors there a couple of years ago). Also a nice city to rent bikes with Toby.
Any tips for a short trip to Ann Arbor in July for a Mama with her 10 month old (how different would your Mama haunts be from your college ones?)
Thanks and love the blog,
Claire

Yes! Awesome, that is totally something people from the Mid West will LOVE!
i have this tee also. LOVE IT.
I think it’s fine…not like you’re wearing a Chicago shirt. :) Also, as a Michigan girl myself I love your Midwest posts!!
I am a Chicagoan, I own that shirt, and I wear it all the time!
I think it’s like trying to speak a language when you travel to that country. The natives always appreciate it.
The reason that the states that are called “midwest” is because from the east those states are mid way to the west. That’s where the term originated from. It does seem confusing though : ).
I think every indie rock boy in the midwest has a tattoo of his state on his arm, so that’s like a permanent concert t-shirt, no shame. And you’re from Michigan, aren’t you? Wear it proud!
Me ha encantado este blog en mi primera visita a su sitio. Fue increíble. Me aprendí mucho conocimiento de esto. Gracias por compartir.
Oh, I love all the comments of proud Mid-westerners (Personally, I’m from the Rocky Mountain region, the real west, which I’m also proud of, and it always confuses me to be mixed up with the midwest by people on the coast. Its a different time zone and very different outlook on life. One that involves a lot of cowboy hats….)
Most places I’ve ever been to seem to have no problem “wearing the concert T to the concert” metaphorically speaking. Have fun in Chicago!
Love this- I live in the Midwest, and would love to rock this shirt! Would wear it with pride :)
To Katie, there is a northwest shirt, and it is super dope! http://crisis.myshopify.com/collections/shirts
As a Midwesterner (I live in Columbus, OH) I say wear it! I bet you will get tons of compliments & people asking where they can get one themselves!
Have fun in Chitown, and check out Charlie Trotter’s restaurant if you can -it is a Chicago institution that is sadly closing at the end of the summer!
xoxo
As an Iowan (transplanted to NYC) whose Boston-bread husband routinely wears his “Des Moines, Hell Yes” t-shirt in Des Moines, I say wear it. Midwesterners love Midwestern love.
Cute!
More Midwestern pride here! On Wisconsin!
I grew up in MI too (live in CA now) and I’m totally buying this shirt a.s.a.p. REPRESENT!
caroline, that’s so true–my friend is from MN and she calls it “the state of dreams.”
andrea, i love that.
As an Argentinean who would totally rock the I <3 NY t-shirt in NY, I say wear it!! ;)
(Sorry for what I’m going to write now, I’m desperate!):
Dear -A Cup of Jo- readers, would you please take 5 minutes to complete this survey for a Market Research course I’m taking? Thank you VERY much! :) http://freeonlinesurveys.com/s.asp?sid=37auv1ksuwttrfn77175
I don’t get the Midwest thing either. It’s not the west. I don’t really care for shirts with meaningless writing on them.
I just impulsively bought this shirt for my husband’s 30th on Thursday. Thanks Jo!! :) sshh don’t tell him.
As another Chicagoan, I say yes! Wearing anything else “cali” or NY related just seems out of place! You should see the “ChIllinois” So ChIll t-shirts, has a little cult following!
– Andrea C.
I think people will appreciate it, wear it! I want one!
Love these. I sent you a link a few weeks ago to Michigan Mitten T-shirts my brother makes from Brooklyn (and you were kind enough to respond). But I love rocking anything mid-west/Michigan themed when I’m in other cities.
Raygun also sells a shirt about Ann Arbor – I might add. Thought you might appreciate it :)
Definitely wear it! We have a cute store here in Des Moines, IA called RayGun that sells t-shirts with cheeky slogans about Iowa and the Des Moines suburbs. People wear them all the time – quite popular!
No! It’s like wearing an I <3 NY tee in NY, a Harvard sweatshirt in Cambridge, an Oxford sweater in England, and a concert tee to the concert.
As a former Mid-Westerner (KCMO holla), now Upstate New Yorker, I say wear it. But that means New Yorkers have to stop giving people a hard time who wear I<3 NY shirts!
I grew up in the midwest and agree with the fellow midwesterners’ comments — my guess is you’ll see a lot of Chicago residents wearing Chicago shirts while you’re there. I say wear the tee to the “concert”, it’s what the cool kids do in the Midwest :)
As a former NYer now Chicagoan, totally fine to wear it! Also, as the mom of a 20-month-old boy who lives in the city, you’ll want to check out some free concerts for kids while you’re in town. Mr. Singer (a local fave of kids) performs at the Farm at the Zoo (southern part of Lincoln Park Zoo) every Wed/Fri mornings at 9:15 am and 10 am. Also, Wiggleworms (a program at the Old Town School of Folk Music, a Chicago music school), hosts free kids concerts every day in Millennium Park at 10 am in the Family Fun Tent. Your son can mingle with the local city kids and burn off some energy!
As a Minnesotan I say wear it. Midwesterners are shamelessly proud of being from the Midwest.
Midwest pride!
my best friend diy’d that shirt for me! i love it!
Check out Wicker Park Inn on facebook. another B&B we stayed at.
I vote bring it :) I live in the twin cities, a place most of us love to live, and often see people in t-shirts with a st. paul or minneapolis area code design, or a “MN nice” logo or something of the like. rep your midwest pride!
I have one and wear it in Kansas City!
wait, chicago is in the midwest, isn’t it? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midwestern_United_States
Great tshirt. I’d love one with Pacific North West.
zandi, no way, that is awesome!!
THANK YOU!
i tried to explain the concert rule to someone recently and they did not get it. at all.
Want one. Now!
I say wear it for sure! Seeing someone wearing that tee would definitely make me smile in a “that’s-so-awesome-she’s-proud-of-her-roots” kind of way. Can’t wait to hear about your trip to Chicago. XO, Alisha (born and bred Minnesotan)
I say ‘yes’! Love the T!
…AND I just bought one :)
Ohioan out in Seattle- gotta show my pride
If you love it….and you obviously do….wear it, no one will even blink. Believe me, you will be better dressed than at least 70% of the people you see.
Yes, Chicago is part of the Midwest which means HUMID; be comfortable however you can be.
Happy Hoosierette (native of Indiana)
That’s awesome i am also going to Chi but for me it is a quite a trip- i will be flying to the usa from amsterdam. If i will see you somewhere i will smile and wink! I wish you lots of fun in Chi!! Monika
I know you grew up in Michigan and so I’m sure you’ll appreciate the similarly perfect grey tee I’ve been sporting all summer designed by my friend Alisa. :)
Hell Yeah Michigan!

Seeing as how Chicago isn’t in the Midwest, I say wear it out! Sincerely, some girl from Kansas – the actual Midwest : )
Wear it! I love it! I want one! I’d wear it every day in my midwestern hometown (STL!)
Do it. Midwest forever. (And NO, Kansas is not the South, as confusing as that was for everyone I met in Massachusetts.)
YES! Mid-west pride!
love from Lawrence,KS
YES!! Wear your midwest love with pride!
I always have the same dilemma when deciding whether or not to pack my “Smitten with the Mitten” hoodie (http://www.michiganawesome.org/collections/hoodies/products/smitten-with-the-mitten-hoodie) on trips in Michigan.
Lol!! Wear it! I’m from the Midwest. People will love it. And, you still be outdressing most people in a tshirt. Haha. I mean that with LOVE!
As a Minnesotan (we’re midwesterners, right?), I say go for it! There is nothing wrong with a little regional pride.
Concer t-shirt to the concert or I <3 NY shirt in NYC. Six of one :) But you should buy it and wear it in New York to rep your Michigan roots!
As a proud mid-westerner I say WEAR IT! I have this “midwest is best” shirt that I ordered from Esty, and I wear it constantly!

Yes, please!
Always okay. :)
Eat Cake
Ohioan here. I say wear it! It looks super comfy
Haha i’m a chicagoan and i see that tee shirt at least twice a week. Its totally okay to wear here!
Yes, wear it – especially if it is one of those super comfy well-worn soft t-shirts. They are hard to come by!
A DEFINITE thumbs up! I wonder if there’s a Northwest Tee?
Katie
The guy I'm dating just took me on an upstate weekend getaway. Here's what I packed...
One thing I realized very quickly after my marriage ended was...
"Everyone should experience being a foreigner. It is completely humbling and cannot help but make you a more compassionate person."
"We laughed, then cried, and then laughed about crying."
