Last Friday, after I posted this smoochy photo from Breathless, I stumbled upon these amazing behind-the-scenes shots of the film, below. Have you seen the movie?
(The third photo above shows the cinematographer Raoul Coutard shooting a scene from a rooftop!)
So, I do not really think this will work.
One of my favorite films. I love seeing these behind the scenes shots!

Watched this in a film class about a year ago, and it’s one of the films I’m so grateful that I’ve seen.
Yes, I’ve seen this movie. Only once, though. I’m dying to watch it again. Jean Seberg’s character is so cute. I’m constantly drawing from her for style inspiration. I also used a line from the movie a while back in a poem that I wrote (but it’s escaping me right now!) Thanks for sharing the behind-the-scenes photos.
Love the vintage black and white pics!
The best one…. dégueulasse, qu’est-ce que c’est dégueulasse???
Oooh if only I could rock a pixie cut so effortlessly… xo
I love this movie and like many other of your commentors I too took a picture of Jean Seberg to the hairdressers and had my hair cut like hers! Unfortunately, I didn’t look as gorgeous as her!
Oh these photos are great! This is my boyfriend’s and my favorite movie to watch together.
Oh my goodness! No I havent seen this movie, but Im thinking now I just may have to!
Hello Joanna,
I love these pictures. Have you seen pictures from the German band KLEE? (http://www.kleemusik.de/gallery/paris-april-2011-teil-2–1-19–.html)
They are very much alike, I think.
Love from Germany!
Sophie
I’ve never seen this movie. I’ll definitely have to check it out.
I’ve never see this, maybe today is a good rainy day, cup of tea and a little black and white netflix love!
That striped dress is killer!
I must see this! I can’t imagine being the guy on the roof filming.
wow! they are really great photos! the emotions are there=)
Can’t believe nobody’s been praising Jean-Paul Belmondo yet. He’s sex on legs in Breathless, and what a filmography! A cinematographic beast. I love Breathless and most Nouvelle Vague movies! :)
That one of the photographer on the ledge is just…wow.
Anyway, I’ll have to echo Matthew’s recommendation of “For Lovers Only.” It’s absolutely stunning.
Thanks for sharing the photos!
what wonderful shots …
oh these photos are so grainy and dreamy and beautiful. you should check out one of my painting professors work, James Adams, he did a whole “jeanie” series based on this movie :) i think you’ll love them: http://www.jamesadams.com/
Great discovery! Love the pics. Also love the pixie hairdo – so wish I could rock it.
LOVE her haircut!
I love how he uses a wheelchair to set up that shot! We did that recently while shooting a comedy video. Nice to know we are as technically savvy as Godard ;)
fabulous pictures.
We have a Breathless poster hanging above our bed.

Also, one of the first gifts I received from Laura was the new criterion edition dvd. She knew it was one of my favorite films.
Oh! The shot of the cinematographer on the ledge is chilling and lovely!

Wow, I’ve never seen it — but I would love to now!
can’t wait to watch this movie!
i LOVE this movie. we saw it for the first time right after our first trip to paris. so beautiful

I love all of Godard’s films from the sixties; after that era, not so much. And Jean Seberg was so beautiful and tragic.
I’ll have to put this movie on my must-see list. The photos are awesome! :)
matthew, thanks for the rec! and susan you are so cute:)
The french new wave is my favorite moment in cinema history…so many classics! I love Jules & Jim too!
Knowing there was no script sort of makes that movie make more sense.
Not only have I seen Breathless, but I’ve seen enough Godard movies to last me a lifetime. There’s only a few that I really like and only a couple that I love. Breathless is one of them. And I have a poster of it in French that I purchased when I was in Lyon visiting friends. The other is Vivre Sa Vie. Anna Karina and Jean Seberg are gorgeous. : )
these are so cool! i love the story behind it. thanks joanna! have you seen ‘une femme est une femme’? also great!
That rooftop shooting photo is amazing! Holy cow! I also really want that Tribune shirt!
Breathless is one of my all-time favorite French films. Jean-Luc Godard is a genius.
Thanks for sharing these incredible behind-the-scenes pics!

Hi Joanna:
I do not know if you blogged about this already but have you seen ‘For Lovers Only’. It is an amazing movie and in the vein of classics such as Breathless. The trailer can be seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I1oEdz_vOk8 and the movie (and soundtrack) are available to download on itunes. I’m certain you will love it so you should check it out.
Matthew
I absolutely love Breathless, especially because the main character is a chic, American girl in Paris. (Americans don’t always get the best rep as travellers). And she’s a writer!
It’s one of my favorites! Jean Seberg is such a beauty! xo.
Kommentar aus Berlin:
Wundervolle Bilder – Chapeau!
Breathless is an all time favorite! Thanks for the behind the scenes! xo A
one of my favorites! I used to have a gigantic yellow and red poster for breathless hanging in my dorm room.
I haven’t seen it, but I will definitely look for it and give it a try(:!
One of my all-time favorite films! Love Godard. Thank you for sharing these.
xo,
Sarah
I love Jean Seberg! I have kept my hair short for the past year in the hope of channeling her style just a little. Time to re-watch Breathless!
Awesome photos! We watched Breathless in my film history class, hands down the best class I’ve taken so far. :)
these are fab. On of my favourite movies of all time!
Well, I was trying to be cute with “on purpose”. Note to self. Stop tryin’ to be cute. Urgh.
Sure, I’ve seen it. I had no choice. My mother had my hair cut Jean Seberg style…on poipoise. And she taught me to say, “My hair is like Jean Seberg’s.
xo
Breathless is one of my favorite films! How great to see these behind-the-scenes photos!
I love Jean Seberg so much. I took a picture of her last time I got my haircut!
Breathless has been my favourite movie since I saw it 5 years ago. I bought my boyfriend the deluxe criterion for his birthday this year. I really ought to check out the extra material, hopefully some of this will be on it (there’s a whole bunch of essays in the dvd book which is really neat)
Definitely need to watch this film again. Love the behind the scenes snapshots of the film.
lovely photos :)
Very cool! I love older movies, I will absolutely check this out! I love Seberg’s style, but then again…who doesn’t??
Awesome! It’s like finding old photos in your grandparents attic!
My favorite movie ever (along with 400 Blows, by François Truffaut)!
