Week of Outfits: Elise Joseph

Week of Outfits: Elise Joseph of Pennyweight

Nashville-based art director Elise Joseph always looks beautifully laid-back. She gravitates toward small designers — “I’d say 50 to 75% of my wardrobe is local,” she says — and recently launched an online store Goodwin to showcase her favorites. Here, Elise reveals five outfits she lives in…

Yellow shirt: Black Crane. Jeans: J. Crew. Mules: Nisolo. Earrings: Natalie Joy for Goodwin, similar.

“With earrings, I either go big or go home. Natalie Joy made this pair — she’s a Portland-based designer. They’re really flattering on all different people. It’s weird to say that about an earring, but people I wouldn’t expect to see them on look so great. I love how big earrings can transform a whole look.”

Dress: H&M, similar. Bag: Emil Erwin. Boots: LOQ.

“I was surprised to like this dress so much. Earth tones are my way of doing colors, since I usually wear blacks and neutrals. I wear it to concerts and parties. Zara and H&M are always good for finding seasonal pieces; and it’s nice not to have to splurge. For style inspiration, I’m loving the Instagram of Reese Blutstein right now. I enjoy following Alexa Chung, Maryam Nassir Zadeh and Solange Knowles. I’m fascinated by these beautiful and hard-working women!”

Week of Outfits: Elise Joseph of Pennyweight

Jacket: Devonrae Jones for Goodwin, similar. T-shirt: Knobbly Studio. Pants: Jesse Kamm. Circle bag: Lotfi for Goodwin, similar. Boots: Rachel Comey.

“I got these white Rachel Comey boots for my winter wedding! My dress was long so you could just see the toe. I’ve worn them so many times since then. I’m definitely a boot girl. They’re practical and comfortable, and I like having a bit of a heel. I also love this jacket. My husband teases me: ‘That’s a lot of fabric!’ When I wear boxy clothing, I try to stick with one piece that’s looser and one that’s more fitted. I may pair a big balloon-like top with a slim trouser, or wide leg pants with a cropped sweater.”

Week of Outfits: Elise Joseph of Pennyweight

Shirt: Han Starnes. Jumpsuit: REIFhaus for Goodwin. Bag: Ceri Hoover. Shoes: Ceri Hoover.

“Nashville has so many great local designers, like Ona Rex and Elizabeth Suzann and Ceri Hoover. I really like the bags designed by Annie Williams. And I love Nisolo‘s shoes and the price point is nice for the quality. I’m excited by what’s happening here locally.”

Dress: Ona Rex. Leather belt: Elizabeth Suzann. Earrings: Faris. Bag: Clare V. Clogs: Swedish Hasbeens.

“I like to play with different textures, both at home and with my clothes — say, a cotton tee, a wool jacket and leather shoes. Outfits becomes visually interesting that way. I’m always looking for a unique feature, like a round bag or an angled heel on boots. It’s all in the details for me.”

“My tattoo is of my grandmother’s signature — I was named after her. While going through old boxes, I found her signature on a postcard she had sent her mom on her honeymoon; she always said it was the happiest time in her life. She was very special to me. She passed away last summer.”

Thank you so much, Elise!

  1. I love your pictures , there is something in your skin that is really fascinating , you should write and article about skin care too .. all Regards,

  2. I like the H&M and the black dress. She is adorable in it. Zara and H&M has always been my favourite too. Just got a tunic from Zara yesterday. Never get bored with those two

  3. Emily D says...

I some how have missed this series. I love it! And she is adorable!

  4. Alison says...

Love her style! Sad that yellow tunic from the first picture is sold out–so amazing! And I love the story of the tattoo of her grandma’s signature. Thanks for sharing!

  5. Suzanne says...

Like so many, just bought the belt! Love it and have a few dresses similar to the one she is wearing that just haven’t seemed to “work” with no belt, so excited to try it! Thank you!

  6. Alyssa says...

Hi Joanna, I really enjoyed this post! I’ve already bought that stripe H&M dress – it is still available here in Australia! Hooray!

I’ve enjoyed the other week-in-outfits but didn’t connect with a person’s style until this one. Elise is so gorgeous, I’d love to read a beauty uniform from her. Thank you for sharing

  7. Danielle says...

Love her style and wish I could copy some of these looks, but right now my style is parka + uggs + everything in my closet to stay warm. Plus a backpack because my doc won’t let me carry a heavy bag anymore. I would love to know how women in colder climates manage their style. I feel like I’m never able to look good and be warm at the same time

    • Mo says...

The bf and I recently moved back to Rochester, NY. I’m feeling the same. I wish I could drive in my LLBean boots. — On the other hand Rochester doesn’t care so much about being chic.

    • Stephanie says...

I agree! It seems so much harder to style for cold weather, and so many of us live in cooler climates. Would love to see more do-able winter weather clothing, CoJ!

  8. I’m obsessed with all of her looks. So laid back but classy. Those J. Crew mules and that jumpsuit particularly stand out! I too have been following Reese on Instagram for a while now, and her style is always killer.

  9. Ah loving her style and that carefree vibe!

  10. i am a long-time fan of this and the beauty uniform series–such a diverse and interesting group of women! with all respect to NYC, i particularly enjoy when you feature women from other cities .
one idea for future posts: women who are dressing creatively on a budget (as much as i love them and want to support a small woman-owned business, this cellist cannot currently afford a pair of Kamm pants ;) ) *and* who are doing so ethically/sustainably, i.e., no fast fashion, upcycling, thrifting, borrowing, swapping, making, mending, etc.

    • Agreed! Would love that.

    • another cellist here who would love to see more low-budget ethical style! the sewing blogs might be a good place to find people…

  11. nicole b. says...

Love her! When visiting Nashville, do add a studio tour of Elizabeth Suzann (by appointment) to your list. It’s really incredible what they are doing in there. Thanks for sharing, Elise & Joanna. xo

  12. Margi says...

I would love to see her as a profile for Beauty Uniform!

  13. yael steren says...

I know this post is about the outfits but can I also say how much I love her place! The wood floors and exposed brick are amazing!!! Now onto the clothes. I love the Ona dress with the clogs! Such a cute look! xx yael

  14. Summer says...

That tattoo put tears in my eyes! Love it, so special.

  15. I love the gold brown shirt in the first pic – one of my favorite colors and very flattering on her.

  16. Andrea says...

I’d love to see a resource post on smaller/local designers that carry extended sizes. The “plus-size” retailers all seem to have one style – and it’s not my style but I have to make do unless I want to go naked, haha!

    • Andrea says...

I should qualify – by extended I mean size 18/20 and up, especially in pants. Lots of retailers offer “extended” sizes (online only) but only go up to size 16.

    • Mindi says...

Andrea, I’d love to know which “extended size” (also have to use quotes!) small retailers you’ve found. I’m in the 12/14 range, and find that a lot of places call an 8 a large and go up to 10 at the largest…and even then, the measurements don’t add up. It’s all very disappointing!

  17. Elizabeth R says...

I hope this is the Nashville home tour you shot!

  18. Karen says...

Wow! Can I just hijack Elise’s closet. Everything looks so chic and comfy. Oh wait, I’m a clutz and have to live my life in flats. Dang! Wonderful post, right down to her Grandmother’s tattoo and the story behind it.

  19. Kara says...

I love this series! So much inspiration in one post. Thanks for lightening up my Thursday :)

  20. Hannah says...

    Love this lady’s style.
I just ordered the H&M striped dress. I’m not sure if it’s the same in the US but in the UK if you sign up for their newsletter you get 25% off the order and free shipping making it an absolute steal!

  21. Lena says...

    She has a gorgeous smile!

  22. Laura C. says...

I like everything! Another resolution this new year would be going out of my confort zone of grey, black and navy and try new colors- and dresses!
The tattoo story gave me chills. I adored my grandma too.
The only thing is, I can’t see the big earrings well!
    Xoxo

  23. Wendy says...

I’ve never considered getting a tattoo, but this one I absolutely love!

  24. Haley says...

I love her look! She’s got a new Instagram follower :)

  25. I love, love these posts, they are always so inspiring, and this is no exception! Bravo.

Incidentally I also own that Reifhaus jumpsuit, and it is one of the most-worn items in my closet!

    • Bec H says...

I am coveting the jumpsuit so hard! A bit scary to buy online to AUS but seriously considering…

  26. Nicole says...

One of my favorite outfit posts! Simple, unique, thoughtfully made clothing, I love being introduced to new brands via these posts!

  27. Kate says...

I want to know about the other tattoos!

  28. I love every look she put together. Great week of outfits!

  29. Robin says...

Love the shapes and colours. My favourite week of outfits so far! I’d love a beauty uniform too :)

  30. beks says...

beautiful style, but I love to see some different shaped ladies in this series!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

Yes we have featured different bodies types and have more to come!

  31. Alexia says...

Hi Joanna! I’m just curious, how do you go about finding people for these types of series (like Beauty Uniform and Motherhood Around the World too). Are they all friends of yours? If so, you have an amazing group of friends!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

We feature friends and also scout people on instagram, via friends, etc! Thank you! Xo

  32. Wow, I love her style and thanks for the Portland love! xx

  33. Trish O says...

I really like this woman’s style. The black dress outfit is wonderful. I just ordered the entire thing…well, ok, I already own the Claire V bag and the Swedish Hasbeens clogs, but I just got the dress and belt. Is it ok to copy so shamelessly?

    • Robin says...

Ha I was just considering the same thing. Have no shame, it’s so perfect. Especially if you already have the shoes and bag! And the dress has POCKETS.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      For sure!!

    • Lisa says...

I also love the black dress outfit

Her style is so cool! I love this series – it has inspired me to plan a week of outfits so I look and feel put (rather than thrown) together

  34. Anitra Sweet says...

the tattoo got me! Insert tears emoji!

  35. I love how Elise buys from local companies. I would love to see a post on companies that produce goods in the U.S.

  36. Carly says...

Lovely post. I am interested in hearing from women who seek out environmentally / socially conscious clothing. I’m trying to weed out the sweat shop garments from my closet and am always searching for new eco friendly brands. Thanks xx

    • miranda says...

This is an Australian site, but they do ship internationally. It is a great resource if you are starting to look at how and who is actually making your clothesL https://wellmadeclothes.com.au/

  37. Julie says...

    Love the black dress!

  38. Jess says...

Elise is wearing three of my fav brands- Nisolo, Elizabeth Suzann and Black Crane – so this is definitely my fav Week of Outfits! Thanks for sharing, Joanna and Elise! Now, off to Goodwin’s website… :)

    • I KNOW! I love Nisolo and Elizabeth Suzann! Saving up for one of the famous Georgia Tees this year :-)

  39. Sarah says...

Beauty uniform from this babe, please!

    • Kerri says...

      second this!

    • Absolutely! I’d like a Uniform on her and Erin Boyle from Reading My Tea Leaves. I love their styles!

    • Ooh! Yes please to both!

  40. Love how effortless and stylish her outfits are. Great combo.

  41. peg says...

goodness…she is so pretty. lovely style and smile!

  42. That tattoo is so, so sweet!

  43. As soon as I saw your Nashville post a while back I hoped you’d be featuring a week of outfits with Elise! Her personal style (and shop) is such an inspiration, and these looks are no exception. She seems so at ease, elegant, and cool. It’s always a pleasure to see and hear more from her. Thanks for sharing!

  44. Jo says...

Definitely need a home tour, stunning!

  45. Lauren E. says...

Oh man, she is SO cool! And her outfits look effortless. Love.

  46. KK says...

Wow I love her style? Would Elise be open sharing a tour of her home?

  47. Katie says...

What a beautiful idea for a tattoo! How heartfelt and sweet. Love the placement too.

  48. Helen says...

My favorite week of outfits yet! Thanks for introducing us to her!

  49. Noelle says...

    LOVE her tattoo!

  50. This is my favorite week of outfits so far. I wear mostly neutrals but am pretty reserved when it comes to fit/shape – all of these bold shapes and silhouettes that Elise chose are totally inspiring. The belted black dress and kimono jacket are both stunning.

Would Elise be up for giving a home tour? It looks lovely!

  51. amy says...

    Love her style. Gorgeous!

  52. gosh dang it. new girl crush!

  53. Natalie says...

    That tattoo is so lovely!

  54. jeannie says...

Love that first outfit so much!

  55. Elise says...

Awww…that made me teary eyed reading the tattoo story…love the name. ;) What a great way to honor her. And love the style too!

  56. Emilie says...

Love this series! And I like it when you feature non-NYC women from time to see so we can see the fashion of different cities or even small towns. Elise’s hair looks great – any chance we could learn how she styles it?

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      i’ll ask!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      haha here’s elise’s answer…

My hair is naturally like that and a little frizzy and crazy. I use a lot of Oribe texture spray to try and tame it. :)

  57. Devin says...

Fantastic! Love her style – it’s so visually interesting! And that tattoo! It’s so simple and elegant. Ugh she is the coolest!

    <3

  58. Oh love these so much! Might just mostly like the tattoo story, so special :)
