Nashville-based art director Elise Joseph always looks beautifully laid-back. She gravitates toward small designers — “I’d say 50 to 75% of my wardrobe is local,” she says — and recently launched an online store Goodwin to showcase her favorites. Here, Elise reveals five outfits she lives in…
Yellow shirt: Black Crane. Jeans: J. Crew. Mules: Nisolo. Earrings: Natalie Joy for Goodwin, similar.
“With earrings, I either go big or go home. Natalie Joy made this pair — she’s a Portland-based designer. They’re really flattering on all different people. It’s weird to say that about an earring, but people I wouldn’t expect to see them on look so great. I love how big earrings can transform a whole look.”
Dress: H&M, similar. Bag: Emil Erwin. Boots: LOQ.
“I was surprised to like this dress so much. Earth tones are my way of doing colors, since I usually wear blacks and neutrals. I wear it to concerts and parties. Zara and H&M are always good for finding seasonal pieces; and it’s nice not to have to splurge. For style inspiration, I’m loving the Instagram of Reese Blutstein right now. I enjoy following Alexa Chung, Maryam Nassir Zadeh and Solange Knowles. I’m fascinated by these beautiful and hard-working women!”
Jacket: Devonrae Jones for Goodwin, similar. T-shirt: Knobbly Studio. Pants: Jesse Kamm. Circle bag: Lotfi for Goodwin, similar. Boots: Rachel Comey.
“I got these white Rachel Comey boots for my winter wedding! My dress was long so you could just see the toe. I’ve worn them so many times since then. I’m definitely a boot girl. They’re practical and comfortable, and I like having a bit of a heel. I also love this jacket. My husband teases me: ‘That’s a lot of fabric!’ When I wear boxy clothing, I try to stick with one piece that’s looser and one that’s more fitted. I may pair a big balloon-like top with a slim trouser, or wide leg pants with a cropped sweater.”
Shirt: Han Starnes. Jumpsuit: REIFhaus for Goodwin. Bag: Ceri Hoover. Shoes: Ceri Hoover.
“Nashville has so many great local designers, like Ona Rex and Elizabeth Suzann and Ceri Hoover. I really like the bags designed by Annie Williams. And I love Nisolo‘s shoes and the price point is nice for the quality. I’m excited by what’s happening here locally.”
Dress: Ona Rex. Leather belt: Elizabeth Suzann. Earrings: Faris. Bag: Clare V. Clogs: Swedish Hasbeens.
“I like to play with different textures, both at home and with my clothes — say, a cotton tee, a wool jacket and leather shoes. Outfits becomes visually interesting that way. I’m always looking for a unique feature, like a round bag or an angled heel on boots. It’s all in the details for me.”
“My tattoo is of my grandmother’s signature — I was named after her. While going through old boxes, I found her signature on a postcard she had sent her mom on her honeymoon; she always said it was the happiest time in her life. She was very special to me. She passed away last summer.”
Thank you so much, Elise!
